Hi Paul, It’s been a while since I last left a message ... suddenly and so sadly, my dear Mum passed away just before the ‘festive season’ 😔..... (no it wasn’t the big ‘C’ as much as they wanted to ‘label’ my dear Mum as ‘just one of their statistics’.) Mum had many health issues and as a result developed pneumonia in her right lung and so Mums immune system couldn’t cope any longer and things just shut down. I spent the last two days with Mum in the hospital. I am telling you this because my Mum was my inspiration to get back to painting, as she herself was a watercolour artist and sold many of her paintings over the years. I did show Mum one or two of your tutorials through the lockdowns, and she thought you very talented and a good instructor. 🎨 I just felt that you should know that you helped to encourage my dear Mum to start to painting again and when I feel led to and the time is right I shall pick up my brush again too. Thank you and all blessings to you and Margot 🤗🤗🌹🦋🙏🏼
Hi Cheryl - thanks so much for your message and so sorry to hear about you mum. Delighted to help in some small way. There is no doubt that art can play an important part in peoples wellbeing. Hope you start painting again soon - all the best - Paul
Love the concept of line and wash with pencil and "allowing" the lines to show through and be featured as part of the entire piece! I will certainly be doing this. The idea of a coloring book is there, but it looked anything but that - a finished piece of art! I say this time and again, you love to teach and it comes through again and again! Thank you so very much for all your time!! Janell
Thanks so much! - always appreciated Janell!
Paul hello.
Thank you for this video of pencil and wash. I’ve been drawing for over sixty years and believed a drawing had to be obliterated by paint. Now I know I can ‘keep’ my pencil sketch and enhance it even more with glazes.
I like drawing people so could you perhaps do a lesson on pencil and wash of people?
Geoff.
I woke up this morning thinking it's Wednesday!
Yipee!
Not only is it "Sushi Wednesday" (our local grocery store chain has sushi rolls made to order for $5 usd every Wednesday ) But more importantly it's Paul Clark Wednesday! You did not disappoint, this is amazing how the painting comes to life with the color. Can't wait to try this.
Now to head down to the grocery store to get my discounted sushi roll before I tackle this painting.
Thank you for all you do. You are such an inspiration.
Great comment Karen ... love the sound of the Sushi rolls for a fiver!!!
This is beautiful! I would love to see a drawing tutorial on your channel - your style of drawing is probably my favorite part of your artwork!
Thank you so much 😀 - it's being planned!
Used to do this when I first tried painting, and realised I felt as though I was cheating. You have given me permission, I feel, not to worry about that, so Thanks Paul! XXX
You definitely have permission - go for it!!!
I didn’t know you could paint over drawings. I can’t wait to try it. I love your lighthearted humor. Quite nice these days.
It’s been a while since I watched and learned from you when you first started your channel. This makes me want to get my paints back out!
Get those paints out Andee!!!
I've just watched this video for the second time - and I love it even more! Can't wait to try something with pencil and watercolour. Thank you
Yay, thank you!
Never thought about pencil, so I will definitely go back and look at my sketches. Thanks 💯
I love your videos, my girlfriend and I rather impatiently await each new tutorial! I was wondering if you could do a tall ship under sail? Thank you so much, you're videos are one of the few "good" things to come out of the pandemic.
The painting is beautiful! Line and wash makes painting sceneries in watercolor less formidable for a beginner like me. Thank you.
Glad 😊 to see your lesson early... California time!❤ Both look interesting, which I will put in my to do file. Love line & wash. .. just tried a flower picture this way... I enjoyed 😉 it! I keep hearing artists saying - paint like no one is watching or judging and have fun!!! Be safe my dear English friend... my prayers are with you all, a California Gramma 🙏
Thank you California Gramma! 😃 ... and a great bit of advice too!
You're welcome 😊!
This is very different from what I would normally do, but this is awesome! I love how the color blended and filled out your drawing! PS. someone get me some stone steps ale 😂😂
Thank you! Cheers Jenna! - Good luck with your move and hope you love your new studio!!! - take care.
Good evening from France, I love your classes and I am looking forward to Wednesday. your explanations are clear. I love your watercolors and I try to reporduire them (after one, two or even three tries). but it’s so rewarding. Thank you very much. very soon for a new watercolor. I start the sketch right away.
Really great. I didn’t miss the Ukrainian flag either…nice touch!!!
Cheers Lou!
Wow!! So many great techniques...in 15 minutes! Amazing..as always. Thank you and Happy Wednesday😊
Thank you! You too!
I've decided to have a go at this twice... I'm superimposing the drawing in pen, over an old painting I didn't finish. I'd started it with my then, 8 year old grand-daughter, as she followed along with me, but she lost interest and the painting has now sat for a few years in my pile!!!. I will then do the nicer version (your cleaner one) on fresh Arches paper. I love your vids, without which, I'd not get to learn from you, as I am not in the UK. You are inspiring me to stretch my previous botanical painting experience into a new world of landscapes, seascapes and architecture with a smaller palette Tanya from Australia
Thank you Tanya for sharing this lovely comment!
Just getting back into my watercolor....thanks for inspiring me again!
You are so welcome!
Lovely as always! I’m going to try this with a group of friends on Thursday. I think they will like the simple coloring in of a line drawing.
Good to hear Jacqueline!
Not just the Ukrainian flag but blues and gold palette 🎨 in use for this lovely colored sketch ✍🏻. Thanks for sharing another beautiful piece. 🍻
Thank you so much Nancy 😀
...'and then I have nature, art and poetry, and if that not enough, then what is enough?' - Vincent Van Gogh. Thank you so much gorgeous line and wash painting. It brings to life both the creations of man and nature to give a historic and scenic atmosphere. So wondrous!
Lovely comment thanks Jillian!
Simply beautiful. Love the way the painting is done loosely and the drawing still is the main subject.
I have followed you a while now.
Am I here because you are?
Or are you here because I am?
Whichever. .. this is exactly what I have been working on and figuring out. And your experiments bring courage. Thank you
Great little comment Anieta - many thanks!
Loved this painting. So many ways you illustrated to make the painting sing!
Thank you so much 😀
I found you a year ago and since then my watercolors have changed you are the best of all youtube ability to teach, talent and sense of humor
Thanks Paul, you’ve opened another door for me. I didn’t think pencil and watercolour would work. I’m certainly going to give it a try… 🙏🎨🙏
Thanks for the tip Paul. Dug out some old sketch books with pencil images. Trouble was, I got so wrapped up in the memories I didn’t get round to the water colour part. Maybe another day! Thank you for your wonderful videos and sharing your skills. I have been at this watercolour “biz” since I was a young ‘un and even at 84 I am still learning thanks to yours, and many other artist’s wisdom and expertise on UA-cam. Stay safe and we’ll.
Glad to help Allen - yes looking at old art is a great way of bringing back memories!
Absolutely Beautiful technique!
Cheers Susan!
Brilliant drawing Paul big thanks. My problem is i spend time drawing a beautiful castle ruins and then spoil it by trying to paint. But your illustrations have taught me to be lose and go with the flow....thanks
You can do it!
Thank you! I love the shadow of the tree, the steps of stone and the abstract plants. YOU are the best!
Wow, thank you!
Have just discovered you Paul. I'm new to art but have taken to it with a vengeance! Your videos are brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing what you know x
Welcome aboard!
That tree shadow on the steps looks so good!
I have loved your instructional watercolor videos. I feel like I'm in your home having hot chocolate and learning to paint. I appreciate your generosity in sharing your drawings that go with the videos. I hope you continue to teach more on watercolor ! Thank you.
Hello Paul - this is beautiful! I love the many different ways water colour can be used. You are teaching us to be quite the critics too! I was looking for a local teacher & found myself analyzing their work. "Where's the shadow, where's the detail?" I do hope you'll be having classes in Canada in 2023, I think I"ll be ready then! In the meantime I am having fun with your book, discovering what to do and what not to do. Also the blue "splats" look perfect! I like the way the colour radiated making it look like a cornflower. Thank you so much!
Lovely as always! It somehow reminded me of the Halloween tutorial with the haunted house. Great to see a different approach to line and wash with the graphite. Thank you for sharing!
I love this technique and am going to have a go at it. Paul I find your tutorials so inspiring and relaxing when I am too busy to indulge in my art work. They feed my creativity and give me pleasurable things to daydream about. Thank you. ❤🙏🇨🇦
Wonderful! - thanks!
Loved this, I sometimes can’t give my landscapes the detail I feel they need. Great tutorial, as ever. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Paul. Has been raining here in Florida(Sunshine State) for several days. Thank you for brightening up my day. Great as always!
Glad you enjoyed it Steve ... but little sympathy when it come to rain! 😊
Line and Wash was the first thing I learned. I forgot how much fun it was. I now am going to go back to some of my drawings. Thanks so much, you are very inspirational.
Have fun Angela!!
I had to come back and watch this, and some of your other line and wash. Experience works. Experience plus talent. Bingo! This reminds me of one of your Halloween tuts. Perfectly spooky tunes. Love it.
I like those steps. Look old but solid. You nailed it.
Lovely….thank you again for sharing your talent with us.
My pleasure 😊
so beautiful!!! love ur work so much.
Thank you! Cheers!
I really like this approach. It’s something I never thought of doing but I love sketching and I think there’s no such thing as too much practice at it. So thank you for providing the inspiration to give this a go!
Funny you bring this up now.. I just found an artist a week or so ago who does full drawings in graphite, ink, or both.. and watercolors over the top. It's a gorgeous technique, his work looks like nothing else I've seen. It's basically "super powered" line and wash. If it helps he works on WC paper.. and uses a water wash to set the graphite before painting. Apply all over, let dry, then paint.
Thanks for sharing!
do you mean smoothy 77
@@AlanOwen Yep!
Beautiful!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work Paul. Shadows on the steps towards the end are very effective.
Thanks very much. I love pencil sketches with watercolor, and I'm hoping to create a nice drawing to paint. I was glad you had time with your teaching schedule to do a video; it's appreciated.
Hello Paul , I live in the US and I found you about months ago, love the way you teach and how you paint. I have already learned a lot from you in a few UA-cam videos.
I ordered your book and received recently but I was recuperating from eye surgery. I am almost heal now and I can’t wait to start learning from your book.
Thanks for being so generous and sharing so much information with all of us beginners and advanced .
Thank you , Thank you
Marcela ❤️
Cheers Marcela - hope you enjoy the book too - have fun!
Thank you! Love line and wash, and can't wait to get started with this variation.
Thanks for the lesson on how to colour graphite drawings Paul, and thanks for making it such an explosion of beautiful, colourful fun, and such a happy subject...it really cheered me up today, whilst doom and gloom seems to be everywhere, I am certainly going to give this a try....Another Great Tutorial !!!!
Thanks so much - go for it!
Oh I just loved this. Thanks for sharing some joy during these hard times
You are so welcome!
Love watching you paint; it's so magical. I definitely will try this one. We talk about you all the time in our painting class in Florida, USA and take our hand at reproducing your work. Thanks
That's great to hear Diane and say hi to the rest of the class for me!
Paul you've added life to the sketch... lovely
Thanks Seema!
Thanks so much for another great tutorial, Paul. On Monday I tell myself only 2 more days for Paul's video and on Tuesday I tell myself tomorrow's the day!!! Yay!!! I so look forward to your videos; thanks so much, Paul. My husband and I and our dog Trooper are home now after an 8 month wait for our house to be repaired because of an attic, ceiling, garage fire. And I told myself it's time to get back to painting again. I painted one of your tutorials at least a year or so ago and then the next three I tried were trashed. I struggle with wet into wet. So my thoughts have been that I'm a terrible painter. And that stops me cold from trying to paint again. I've decided recently that I'm not going to listen to that voice anymore and I'm just not going to care how my painting turns out. I know if I just keep trying, I'll get better and better. While staying in the motel, I decided to paint some thank you cards for the employees to let then know how much I appreciated them and for making our stay such a pleasant one under the circumstances. And some were wet into wet! 😵💫😵🥴So I painted them anyway and found that I had more courage with a smaller subject and being that I painted around 15 cards, it was good practice for me and built up my confidence a little bit. So I thought I'd share this in case anyone else struggles with the same type of issues so that my story might encourage them to not give up and keep trying on a small greeting card instead of a large sheet of watercolor paper. I so appreciate you and Margo!!! I think I'll give this one, 'a go'! Thanks again, Paul!!! ☺
Hi Laina - great to hear you are back in your home! - and .... as you say don't listen to that voice ... just go for it and enjoy yourself ... and don't worry about the result! All the best - Paul
Thanks for sharing! I’m a beginner and I too am in happy with my work so I’m thinking of going smaller. You’ve been a help. 🍄
@@stefaniemapley4386 I'm so glad it was helpful. With going smaller, I wasn't as concerned if it turned out well or not. Of course I wanted it to turn out well, but I wasn't as uptight if it wasn't successful. And it turned out that most of the greeting cards were successful doing the wet into wet technique. That helped me so much to loosen up!!! 😊
Thankyou Paul now i will worry less for graphite .You are a wonder in watercolor world .a magician
Thank you Paul for another STUNNING line & wash.. my fav. Ill incorporate this into my drawing class drawings this week. Absolutely gorgeous
Never knew you could watercolor over pencil. I'll give this a try. I've been wondering if you could do a tutorial sometime about backlighting. I've recently seen some photos of backlite flowers, and they are beautiful with the light behind shining through the petals. I gave it a try but didn't have much luck. Thanks...love Watercolor Wednesdays. Cathy, from Juneau, Alaska.
Never a dull moment! Always a pleasure 😊
Really nice composition Paul, the loose greenery with variegated colour is a visual treat🙂
I can't believe it took me this long to find you! Popped over from Steve's channel (I've been a subscriber of his for a long time)...I'll be running through all your beautiful work and tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing your gift. Many blessings to you and yours from the States. Keeping our beautiful world in prayer so that we might paint it lovely. 💖🙏💖
Awesome! Thank you and welcome Ginger!!!!
What a perfect way to start my Wednesday ! This is beautiful and will have to try it. Thanks Paul !

Beautiful Paul! You are so amazing, I love watching your tutorials.
Thank you! Cheers Carrie!!
Hi Paul, as always wonderful work.. would give this painting a try, thank you for this beautiful piece of art work..🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great technique and great picture to give it a go! Love the theme you chose. A place where time left visible marks, the scetch you did with graphite (in my opinion gives depth) and how watercolour brings everything to life. It's beautiful and magical. Thanks.
Another great lesson. This one strecthed my sketching skills and I'm happy with the outcome.
Great video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Paul, this was SO awesome! And so very helpful as well. You are so right (too many ‘so’s LOL) there’s something very gratifying about adding watercolour to a pencil sketch. I loved the addition of the Liquitex, “whoa” is right, LOL As usual, a wonderful tutorial and brilliant results. Thank you SO very much, Paul ❤️
You are SO SO welcome as ever Didi!!
Absolutely beautiful 💕

Great tutorial Paul. I so enjoyed having a go at this and painting over my pencil drawing. Quickest one I've done so far too. I'm learning so much since I found you on UA-cam. Thank you.
Wonderful painting love it. My favourite line and wash. Thank you 🇨🇦
Thank you teacher....for such lovely tutorial....U are one of the reason for my love for watercolor...
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks a lot! I was wondering for quite some time how to move on from graphite pencil to more color. And I had some unsatisfying tries. But this here is exactly my way to go. I can stay with my comfy pencil and add some color step by step right in my comfort zone. Thank you for unblocking my thinking. ;)
Thank you Paul. Your drawings/paintings are absolutely beautiful 👌😊
Thanks Paul, this is something I do enjoy doing as im not an accomplished artist like yourself and like graphite drawing.
Go for it Marty!
love that sketch! this reminds me of something i have been thinking about trying, doing a scene in grey scale with copic markers to get all the values right and then doing a wash over that with the local color and seeing how it turns out.
from México, Mr. Clark you are a great ! Maestro !!!!!! S.García Osio
