I only started painting and drawing at the beginning of lockdown. Funnily enough I’ve had a lot of time to watch videos. I’ve just discovered you, and yours have to be the best ever. Best watercolor tree tutorial I've ever seen. Struggled making nice loose trees for 4 years in a class... this is a revelation. Cannot wait to sharpen my paintbrushes!
I ordered your book from Amazon and just got it today......I like your way of teaching and being so much. You share and care about others.....you rock my world .....stay safe and keep shinning as only YOU can.....Life needs your light and love xxoo
Paul I kiss your feet!! This is a transformational video for me, a new watercolor painter, now much frustrating struggle has been eliminated with these techniques. This sharpened wooden end of a brush is so simple and soo effective. It transforms my poor overworked trees and grasses. Will get myself a natural sponge and pretend I am in Japan in cherry blossom season. Holding a round brush flat and dragging over dry paper, what could be better! And finally the piece de resistance - how to make misty trees. This video has to be one of the very best I have ever watched for simple effective techniques that can be used over and over in so many different paintings. Thank you Marguerite
I am definitely not a beginner painter.. but I always enjoy watching other artists for possible techniques. The sharpened end dragging it through the wet trunk is genius! Thanks for sharing!
I LOVE YOUR INSTRUCTION STYLE! I just started playing with watercolor a month ago and you are, by far, the best instructor I've seen on videos. THANK YOU FOR SHARING your talents and techniques.
Paul, I really, really appreciate what you give us here. There is an emotional component to all this, as well as teaching. When I was teaching pigs to sing- I mean people, teaching people to sing- I found that humor was a great, relaxing ingredient; my teachers and coaches always had that quality. Thanks again for helping me through this bizarre time.
Arborist! Ooh! lovely word 🎄🌳🌲🌴 I HATED painting trees! Have enjoyed watercolour painting for several years and felt like I was going to the dentist when I needed to paint these beautiful species of wood and foliage, yes I love trees they are a beautiful necessity and have fantastic shapes, but I tried to avoid drawing and painting them until I came across your Tree Tutorial and What a FANTASTIC HELP sharpening a brush and using it to do the branches. Something so simple as this has changed my watercolour experience, the misery has gone! 😘 Thank you, you artistic genius. Hahaha, listening to a play and he is now talking about Special Branch! Very apt.
My art teacher has some kind of vendetta against small paint brushes, but after seeing what your rigger did, I ran out and bought a #3 today. You have such a lovely style and communicate things splendidly. Thank you, Paul!
I began drawing in graphite painting years ago. I felt like I "could breathe again for the first time." Then something happened and of course, my art was sidelined. Only recently have I learned what caused the issue. I found your videos over the past 2 weeks and have learned so much that would have made my journey far more enjoyable and much easier......... Your techniques give wings to my work and I love them.I've tried some of them. The minimal number of brushes, colors and options are truly helpful, and provide for a meaningful, engaging and successful result. Thank you, so much. Of course I have purchased your book and can't wait for it to arrive. Last wednesday I learned that I have NPH Hydrocephalus and will require brain surgery at the end of this week. Thanks to your upbeat approach and teaching skills, I now that I will be able to paint again and I have something to look forward to when I get home............PS. The book's going with me to keep my spirits high. Again. Bright Blessings and many thanks. Your UA-cam channel reached me in Washington state, on the upper west coast of the USA. As a complete beginner, I was amazed at my results after following your tutorial. I only wish I could share pics of my before and after trees because the difference is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing and I'm going to try your other tutorials. I've ordered your book too!
I started with this trees. The "new" trees from 2021 will follow. And finally your book arrived from England to Germany. It took quite a while, cause to difficult times. The good thing is: staying at home - much time for your lessons!
I was driving home today to New York from Virginia and was captivated by the tall grasses along the highway...yellowish, golden, brownish with greens mixed and some dark colors...I looked through several sites but yours is absolutely the most wonderful and fun! Thank you and I am so lucky for having discovered your offerings. Take care.
I will love learning from you! You are adorable, a great artist, and a very fun teacher! I'm so happy I found you. Thanks for great lessons and NOT being boring! Love your style.
Thanks for your wonderful tutorials finally someone who teaches something useful and doesn’t just like to have the camera on there face all the time and listen to themselves talk. Seriously watched so many talk and talk and haven’t even put any paint on the paper, keep the tips coming ,thanks
Paul, thank you for making this tutorial. I have no knowledge about painting but I learned and enjoyed much in watching your painting process. Keep up your good work. 😊
I too only started painting at the beginning of the first lockdown . I tried several courses and these are by far the best and I feel I have learned some new techniques to improve my painting style ( much needed). The courses are also fun and Paul presents and explains really well . Great stuff - keep the videos coming please.
Wow.. those trees you paint are amazing, and you do it so easily. Lots of helpful hints - particularly sharpened brush handles. I have been struggling with painting tree branches, with uneven thickness, unnatural shapes and angles, etc. I will try this trick. Thank you, I have learned a lot.
You definitely caught my eye with your videos...you make learning so much fun...love your sense of humour..your learning style and all of your unique tips..very impressed!!! LOVE IT!! Thank You so very much...now to get busy and pull out those watercolours...you're awesome!
Thank your for your videos, I've discovered your channel just a few days ago and thanks to it, I've finally managed to come back to watercolor painting after many attempts and frustrations. I've tried painting the trees and loved the results (even my sceptical husband did!), hope to try some more very soon! (and can't wait for the book to arrive...)
Thanks so much Ola and a very warm welcome! - Yes, watercolour can be frustrating, important thing is not to put too much pressure on yourself to paint a masterpiece every time - just enjoy the learning experience, it's the best time! - Hopefully my book will help along the way - let me know how you get on.
For this beginner, this is the best demonstration on painting trees that I have seen. You’re the best. Very concise and beautifully done. Can’t wait to get my brushes wet! Thank you for all you do.

Although I constantly have to pause you to keep up, I’m loving all your tutorials! Tour a great teacher, inspiring and challenging! I’ve only started watercolor for about 6 months, I’m loving it. My grandmother use to do oil and China painting for the most part, she was an artist in all areas all arts and crafts. I’m 48 from Texas and hope by the time I’m a grandmother I will have learned enough to teach my grandchildren. Your paintings and techniques are awesome. Maybe I need to try to break more often with a gin and tonic! Thank you!

First your marvelous work with skies, then this terrific treatment of trees! Again, it's excellent-as is your relaxed, articulate delivery. Sharpening the non-bristle end of the brush to do branches is pure genious and simplicity rolled into one. My only regret is the light-speed of the evergreen segment, where you also dropped any discussion of colors/washes. NOBODY would have grown bored with a real-time treatment of evergreens!
Thanks for that Chris - very helpful 👍. I'm going to do a 'Painting Tree's Volume 2 - so will definitely look into evergreens in more detail. Thanks for the great compliments!
Paul, thank you! Love this video, and it came just at a time when I'm trying to improve my trees. I'm wondering why I can't get my sharpened brush end to pull the paint. Is there something I might be doing wrong? Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! - just make sure your washes are nice and wet and the end of your brush isn't too sharp - smooth the end a little with some sandpaper.
Hi Laurie, just wondering how you have got on with this as I appear to be having the same problem. I’ve doctored the end of a no.5 brush, tried using different thicknesses of paint, and just seem to score within the painted area (the tree trunk). Outside of the painted area I just seem to have a tiny feint trace of a twig! Paul makes it look so easy...
@@ritacurrie9842 Hi Rita, I didn't have too much luck with the sharpened end of my brush, but I've found other methods that work. I find that using the tip of a palette knife instead of the sharpened end of my brush is a little more successful. Mostly, though, I use a rigger brush or a very small round (like a #2). Happy painting!
@@laurieedelman4314 Thanks Laurie for your advice. I have made several attempts in doctoring a different brush and the affects were considerably better. However, I shall have a go later with a palette knife. My thanks again, and regards.

Dear Paul, thank you for your great tutorials! I learn a lot from your lessons. Could you also advice how to paint the trees with the sunlight and a church on a background (this is one of your stunning paintings that you show at the beginning of this video). What kind of colours mixing that you use hier for the sky? Thank you! All the best to you and your family!🙂
Hi Lilija and many thanks - I've had a few others ask the same so the best thing would be to do a video on it - I'll put it on the list - keep in touch! 🙂
Very wonderful video! I know I can learn how to do these beautiful trees! I am moving from Texas to Tennessee next week and I can't wait to learn all about the vegetation there in the mountains. I plan to do a thorough study of all of the trees they have there and paint them as I go. I will start off with doing them in winter and then have spring to look forward to. Your videos are very helpful! Thanks again!
Paul, this tutorial was amazing. I had never heard of sharpening the end of your brush, and sanding it, in order to paint tree branches. I just sharpened the end of one of my brushes. Thanks so much.
This was a great tutorial for artists!! I am not a “flash” artist. I’ve taken several classes online and in person, free and Paid. I always gather something from each class however, the subject painting is always completed in each of those classes. And that’s just not how I paint. It’s nice to get some reinforcement about letting it sit for a day or two and coming back after looking at it. I prop my paintings up in my main room outside the studio and look at it 1000 times a day. Then finally I’ll come back and say… It’s done, it needs a little more darkness here, or I really messed this one up completely. Lol Thanks for the free advice! You’re classes are some of the best. 😊
@@ArtbyPaulClark this comment was supposed to go with you video about taking your time as an artist. Don’t know how it got connected to your lesson on trees . Which, by the way, is also an excellent lesson. 😉

Thanks for sharing your talent and humor! I knew I had landed in the right place when you turned up a nice cold ale at the end of your painting lesson!! Cheers!
I watched and painted along with video three times and each time my trees got progressively better! Thanks Paul! Love your humor sprinkled in with videos.
I only started watercolor painting at the beginning of lockdown though I’ve wanted to paint with watercolors since I was a child. “Better late than never”. What a blessing to find you, Paul, after all the watercolor videos I’ve been watching. I love the humor, professional tutorials, looseness, playfulness and excellent guidance you provide. Keep making tutorials!!! You’re a breath of fresh air!
Started watercolour in lockdown and have a long way to go. Really want to loosen up and love line and wash. Have watched the windmill and now the trees. Can feel a practice session coming along. The simplicity is so beautiful. Not sure about sharpening the end of my brushes - they are a bit pricy. Will definitely give one of my old brushes a haircut! I will be coming back.
Thank you for the link on painting palm trees. I will practice these and other trees….. I have only just started doing watercolour, and thought it was not for me but now I am enjoying it much more since watching your uTube videos. I will be away in the California desert in the winter, away from my painting teacher, so I will rely on your great tips. Thanks so much Paul. Arleen, Vancouver, Canada
I love your tutorials. Thank you for them. I’ve paid for classes and haven’t seen anything as good as yours. The one thing I need to do though, is practice these…. I watch, and then am too scared to try…. Going now…. Thanks Paul Clark.
You are the most amazing talent and teacher on UA-cam. I just started painting two years ago (in my 60’s) and have learned so much from you. I have an “art studio” set up in my unused dining room, and paint almost every day. You inspire me and also make me laugh. I have watched many videos on tree painting, and your’s is by far the best. Thank you for sharing your talent and ideas!
Hi, UA-cam has just offered me your channel. I discover it with this video which is really very well explained. I completely agree with people who say that you are a good teacher. I looked through some of your videos and surprise ... I came across a gold mine of tips and tricks. This is exactly what I need to progress. Thank you.

Sounds great - thanks Dottie!
I am so laughing... “Manky” that is the coolest brush and I laughed at the example of what a Manky brush -IS NOT😂😂😂 lol
Hi Angie - glad I made you laugh! - makes it all worth while! 😂
Paul, this tutorial was amazing. I had never heard of sharpening the end of your brush, and sanding it, in order to paint tree branches. I just sharpened the end of one of my brushes. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful John!
Nice tricks. Please show the trick on how to paint the palm tree in "A Garden in Nassau" by Winslow Homer.
many thanks - I've got another 'Tree' video coming shortly so I'll include 'A Garden in Nassau' in the list!
So enjoyable and educational. thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic
More punk brush than manky 😀
I cannot say enough, how grateful I am for these fantastic tutorials!!!!!!!!!! Thank you very very much!
You're very welcome!
I wish all the teachers were like you as you explain so well. You are a gifted teacher as you dont just show off your own art like so many so thanx.
Very kind - thanks Mary!
Lol
Thanks for the free advice! You’re classes are some of the best. 😊
Great stuff Kathy - thanks for sharing!
@@ArtbyPaulClark this comment was supposed to go with you video about taking your time as an artist. Don’t know how it got connected to your lesson on trees . Which, by the way, is also an excellent lesson. 😉
Merci pour votre incroyable partage ..et talent .C est la meilleure vidéo d explications sur les arbres que j’aie jamais vue .Plein de techniques à utiliser ,jamais démontrées par les professeurs .The best tutto,I confirm .

Thanks for sharing your talent and humor! I knew I had landed in the right place when you turned up a nice cold ale at the end of your painting lesson!! Cheers!
Lol!!! - that's great to hear!
I watched and painted along with video three times and each time my trees got progressively better! Thanks Paul! Love your humor sprinkled in with videos.

These “how-to’s for trees are absolutely fantastic…. Been an issue for years with me. Thank you!!!
Another brilliant tutorial. Thank you Paul.
Glad you enjoyed it
I only started watercolor painting at the beginning of lockdown though I’ve wanted to paint with watercolors since I was a child. “Better late than never”. What a blessing to find you, Paul, after all the watercolor videos I’ve been watching. I love the humor, professional tutorials, looseness, playfulness and excellent guidance you provide. Keep making tutorials!!! You’re a breath of fresh air!
Wonderful thanks Sharon - never too late to start! - keep in touch!!
You can do it!
You are so welcome!
Love it, thank you! And I'm so glad you didn't give up painting to become a rock star.
Thank you for the tutorials Mr Paul Clark
You are very welcome Tina!
I’ve watched this three times now, it’s a wonderful video made by my favorite watercolor teacher!!👏🏻.
I love your tutorials. Thank you for them. I’ve paid for classes and haven’t seen anything as good as yours. The one thing I need to do though, is practice these…. I watch, and then am too scared to try…. Going now…. Thanks Paul Clark.
Awesome! Thank you!
probably the most resourceful and clear instructions i can find, thank you Paul.
Wow, thanks!
I am a beginner painter. Great techniques...best I have found. Thank you.🙂
You are so welcome Sherrie!! 🙂
Love the trees! Thanks Paul. You are one of my FAV teachers.
Glad you like them!
Hi, UA-cam has just offered me your channel. I discover it with this video which is really very well explained. I completely agree with people who say that you are a good teacher. Welcome aboard Nathalie! - delighted to help!
Paul, where have you been all my life ;). I've been struggling with watercolor, except for flowers. I yearned to paint good trees especially. Those trees were all fabulous! I bought your book, and will be watching more of your videos and rewatching this one. Time to go sharpen my brush end...
Glad I could help!
I avoided painting trees as they used to turn out flat...but after watching this video I am going to paint a lot of trees. Thank you for this lovely video.
Most welcome 😊

Hai reso facile con la tua bravura cose che non lo sono affatto

What a JOY you are to watch!!! I find watercolor so intimidating 😔. I think I'll borrow your talent for a bit. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.
I like your idea of using the other end of the brush for details. That's brilliant Paul.
Glad you like it

Wonderful! - so pleased to have helped!!!
Hello. Your art and education are unique. Thank you very much. I'm just learning.
I enjoy watching your work so much that instead of practicing, I sit for hours and watch and admire your art show. Your tree trunks are very beautiful, natural and unique. I hope I can perform a little. Thankful

I ordered you book and can’t wait to receive it. I love your style as it simplifies things I’ve had trouble painting.
I really love your paintings of the old farm houses, etc. as not too many of those beautiful buildings here in America. Thank you Paul for sharing these amazing tips and paintings.
Awesome! Thank you too Jeannette!!
That's great having that other end of the brush to drag out the paint! I really like these trees. Thanks so much for the video!
Paul, I could hug you! Love your humor and the wonderful way, you teach how to paint those trees. I just sharpened the end of one of my favorite brush! Tomorrow, I'll start practicing painting those trees, which are one of favorite subjects. Thanks a million! Greetings from Augsburg ;))
