  • This animated film captures the struggle of a family in Afghanistan to survive Taliban oppression -- with a focus on the struggle of the family's daughter Parvana who becomes an only child when her brother is killed by a mine. The film has received numerous awards for its haunting use of cartoon animation to portray the harsh realities of life in Afghanistan -- particularly for women and girls.
Angelina Jolie was the film's Executive Producer. The film stars Saara Chaudry, Soma Bhatia, Noorin Gulamgaus, Kane Mahon, and Laara Sadiq. Nora Twomey directed the film with additional executive production by Mimi Polk Gitlin.

I would say this animation is too violent and scary for children to watch but...children under the Taliban experienced this...that’s why this movie made me cry so much. It’s an extraordinarily beautiful creation.

One scene that I think isn't talked about a lot is when Idress was chasing Parvana and Shauzia and threatening them with a gun. When he accidentally fired it and hears the silent he has a moment of realization that he just killed two children which shouldn't be surprising for him but it is
Idrees looks to be like he is a young adult. Going into war and he is all talk about how he will fight for Islam and is so quick to talk about how he is ready for war when in reality he realizes he isn't at all. He realizes that he just took the lives of two kids (granted the girls didn't get shot but from his perspective he thinks they did). This humanizes his character a lot

The scene that stays with me is when Parvana is in the market as Sulayman and sells a dress to a man who has a young woman with him. Parvana supposes that she is his daughter but the man says she is his wife. Even though he's easily old enough for her to be his daughter or even granddaughter

If you are a worse person than this girl, for example, and have a better life than her, then it's your fault too she has it worse. By not suffering enough yourself you're making others suffer in your place. So we are all responsible for that and should feel guilty

*Afghanistan, had a very beautiful and noble culture with endless freedom. Afghanistan, as the heart of Asia, was also always the motherland of many different people with many different beliefs and in more than 8.000 years of history in Afghanistan nobody had any problems with each other. But since it got islamized all the problems begun. Because Islam is a religion which doesn't want to coexist. This is hard but true.*

And the pictures of living beings in other abrahamic religions are also forbidden but once again, no one takes it extremely serious (better said: non extremists)
