  • Why is The Breadwinner our ST. Patrick's Day film this year? The Irish animation studio, Cartoon Saloon's 2017 feature is the story of a young Afghan girl who must disguise herself as a boy in order to survive while her country falls further under Taliban control. It's a strange choice for the studio who made Wolfwalkers and Puffin Rock! Or, is it...

The distributor for this film seems to disallow ANY use of clips, which I only discovered after editing my review and getting blocked several times. I had to re-edit using only still images, so this review looks quite different from my usual videos…sorry.

I watched the movie. I also analyzed the main villain, Idrees a member of the Taliban who kidnapped Parvana's father. Also not to mention, since he is a member of the Taliban, it is heavily implied that Idrees has executed people before the events of the film. The way Idrees threatens Parvana's father is hinted that he actually did execute people before.

It's mentioned he was a student of Parvana's father. He went from student to thug pretty quickly.

I read the book of this show, and even though I don't completely understand the hardships of being a girl there, I appreciate the show to give me a glimpse in a new light

This is the first ( but will not be the last ) video of yours that I watched and I am just BLOW AWAY at the production quality. A beautiful script, warm audio and I am just in love with the look of your studio. I don't know if you did this already and I missed it but if you haven't I would love to see at least a short on a full look at your studio and the gear that u use to achieve such a cinematic, dreamlike feel. In any case. Truly a great video, keep up the amazing work and I am sure the algorithm will pick up your channel in no time.

Thanks so much, I appreciate that. I play around with the look a lot, just because it's fun for me. Apologies, it's not always quite the same. But I use a Canon C70 with various lenses, and a basic Aputure 100D key light with softbox and 1/4 CTO gel. I am planning to start a personal vlog channel soon to talk more about that sort of thing and I'll post a link when it's ready to launch in case anyone's interested. Thanks again. Cheers.

@@DaddyDaughterMovieNight Thank you so much for your quick response and detailed answer. I would love to check it out when your new channel is ready. If UA-cam is not your only profession, are you by any chance in the filmmaking industry? I am asking because that is some rather nice gear you have and you certainly know how to use it well + the theme of your channel, so it got me interested. I hope you don't mind me asking.

No problem. I worked for Tippett Studio, a VFX company for 24 years, but on the facilities side, and have always been interested in film. I've picked up a few things along the way. I wanted to start a vlog to talk about some of my experiences, friends, projects, etc. Right now I'm a full time dad and doing UA-cam as time allows to stay creative. Are you doing film yourself?

@@DaddyDaughterMovieNight Wow, sounds cool. Hope you enjoyed your time there.
      Hehe, it shows.
Yeah sounds fun, would love to check it out when it's ready.
And as we know, being a parent is a full-time job :)
Just amateur stuff. There is a lot left to learn and skills to master. I know just enough to see when something is done right and that's why I was speechless when I saw just how well you did your video. But I have a YT channel of my own in the works. But with how busy I am lately it might be some time before it's out.
