What a legend. The only two Japanese Animation to win Oscars are both by Hayao Miyazaki.
To be fair, there are other foreign animated films that have deserved to win. The academy has a bad Disney bias
@@nickfernandez7358 As well as "Hayao Miyazaki is the only worthwhile anime director" tunnel vision.
Once he leaves us, probably with a 3rd Best Animated Feature Oscar if he manages to get one more out, what'll Western awards groups do? Go back to ignoring anime and its wonderful diversity of entertainment tastes?
@@Wired4Life2 Depending on where Ghibli goes after his passing, we could see more films nominated from the studio. I do think the quality won't be quite there though, and they'll just be relegated to the Pixar/Disney treatment of getting noms no matter the quality.
@@toadfan64 One of the Ghibli bigwigs' major regrets, and Miya-san even sprinkles this into _The Boy & the Heron,_ was that they neglected to groom enough studio successors.
@@toadfan64 I doubt it. Every time they try to do something without Miyazaki they fumble so hard that he comes out of retirement.
The only two big reasons I’m happier that The Boy and the Heron won is because 1. I haven’t seen Robot Dreams yet and 2. This is the second time a 2D animated film won this category with only other one being Spirited Away.😊
Robot Dreams is definitely my 2nd favorite of the nominees and it's in my overall top 10 movies of the year. Worth watching if you can.

Also directed by Miyazaki. The Boy and the Heron had some scenes that flexed the power of traditional animation.
Happy to see a 2D movie win the award.
Not to mention it’s the first PG-13 animated film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and literally this is a huge game changer and reminder to everyone that Animation is a Medium and Artform not a "Genre for Kids" so Guillermo Del Toro said it perfectly last year, Animation is ready to take the next level. Also who knows it could open the door for other Animated Studios (e.g. Disney, Warner Bros., Universal/Illumination, DreamWorks Animation, etc.) to do Mature Animated films in the PG-13 and R rated range outside of the G or PG rating.

Ironic too since Spirited Away was the catagory's first ever win. What a way to complete the circle (and hopefully open the door for more anime film wins in the future).
@@johnsteel5347agreed but at the same time, this is kind of a bizarre comment, whether you're being serious or just a little sarcastic poke. FUN FACTS:
Studio Ghibli's "The Boy and the Heron" became the very first PG-13 animated film in Oscar history to win Best Animated Picture. Most previous Oscar-winning animated films were rated G or PG. It became the 2nd 2D animated film to win after its previous winner "Spirited Away." And it's GKIDS' first win after Disney distributed "Spirited Away" before it sold all the Studio Ghibli North American rights to GKIDS. Congrats to Hayao Miyazaki from coming out from his retirement to make this wonderful animated film!
PS
I like that "Spinning Globe" song in the ending credits. I wish that could've gotten the Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Hayao Miyazaki also becomes only the 7th person ever in Oscars history win a competitive Oscar AFTER getting an Honorary one specifically for Lifetime Achievement. He joins Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Ennio Morricone, and Spike Lee in pulling this off.
As a matter of fact, Miyazaki is the only one of the 7 to have his Lifetime Achievement Honorary come both before AND after a competitive win, with his SPIRITED AWAY win coming before it.

FUN FACT: This win makes Hayao Miyazaki the 6th oldest Oscar winner in any category, after James Ivory (Adapted Screenplay for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME at age 89 years and 270 days), Ann Roth (Costume Design for MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM at 89 years and 177 days), Ennio Morricone (Original Score for THE HATEFUL EIGHT at 87 years and 110 days), Charlie Chaplin (Original Score for LIMELIGHT at 83 years and 345 days), and Anthony Hopkins (Lead Actor for THE FATHER at 83 years and 115 days). Hayao Miyazaki didn’t make anime movies to win awards, maybe that’s why he wasn’t there. He’s a storyteller, and by hand drawn, he can control everything aspects of the process of making it. No glitches or programs problems to deal with. Congrats and long live anime.
4 biggest reasons why “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” lost to “The Boy And The Heron”:
1. Unlike every other previous years, there wasn’t a clear front-runner to win this year, it was the first time that the Best Animated Feature category was act competitive.
2. Unless you’re “Toy Story”, the Oscars would not give a sequel another win (Shrek 2 and The Incredibles 2) so they would want to spread the wealth and reward another film.
3.”The Boy And The Heron” was #1 at the USA box office and was both a critical and commercial success. Although it was nowhere near the box office revenue of “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse”, it was hit with Western audiences and enough Academy voters actually saw the movie to vote for it.
4. It’s HAYAO MIYAZAKI!!! He’s well-respected and beloved by so many people worldwide. The movie was his most personal and I think the movie resonated way more with the older members, which the 60+ years demographic are still the majority age group of current Oscar voters.
Yo facts
Great points. Across the Spider-Verse is like the Two towers of animated films, literally. It ends on a hard cliffhanger and only concludes one character's arc, it's Gwen's. The next one will go all in Return of the King style and win a bucket load of awards, including some Oscars. We're also getting more animated Spider-Man: Spider-Verse style films as spin-offs sooner rather than later after Beyond the Spider-Verse. The Boy and the Heron could probably be the end of . Miyazaki as a director and it spoke from the heart.
Another point is that The Boy and The Heron came out to theaters in the US in December! November and December are when movies that they want to have a chance to win at awards are usually released later in the year so they are fresh in their minds.
Your comment made me even more upset about Toy Story 3 and 4 winning
@KaeMcSpadden- Yes! I definitely agree with you and I should’ve added your point on my list. Movies released, right before the year ends, gives a film a better chance to get nominated at the Oscars! “The Boy and the Heron” peaked at the right time during Oscar’s voting period, and the same thing can be said with “Godzilla: Minus-One” also!
At the age of 83, Hayao Miyazaki won his second Oscar 21 years later after Spirited Away. You just can't tell how great he is. I'm truly grateful that he is still making new animations.❤
If my memory serves me correctly, he is the 6th oldest Oscar winner in any category, after James Ivory (Adapted Screenplay for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME at age 89 years and 9 months at the time of his win), Ann Roth (Costume Design for MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM at 89 years and 6 months), Ennio Morricone (Original Score for THE HATEFUL EIGHT at 87 years and 3 months), Charlie Chaplin (Original Score for LIMELIGHT at 83 years and 345 days), and Anthony Hopkins (Lead Actor for THE FATHER at 83 years and 119 days). Miyazaki's age at the time of the win was 83 years and 65 days.

DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Ennio Morricone, and Spike Lee). In fact, Miyazaki is the only person ever to get the Lifetime Achievement Honorary both before and after a competitive win (his SPIRITED AWAY win was before the Honorary).

Literally, 15 of the 18 animated films that won the BAFTA (except LEGO Movie, Kubo, Klaus) end up winning the Academy Award for Best Animated feature.

Besides, outside the _Toy Story_ franchise which won Best Animated Feature through Toy Story 3-4, their hasn’t been *ANY* animated sequel that has won the Oscar. _Shrek, The Incredibles_ and _Into the Spider-Verse_ won the Oscar, yet their sequels (Shrek 2, Incredibles 2 and Across the Spider-Verse) didn’t go on to win the Oscar with the _Incredibles 2_ losing to _Into the Spider-Verse_ and now _Across the Spider-Verse_ losing to _The Boy and the Heron._

Mahito Maki is arguably Ghibli's most definitively and literally damaged protagonist, with audiences playing witness to both his brutal self-harm and his eventual evolution into a cunning navigator of a spirit dimension. Perseverance is as much a throughline in Studio Ghibli heroes as their otherworldly settings, and Mahito Maki is no exception. When he gets roped into a conflict of cosmic proportion, Mahito Maki answers the call to action like any powerful protagonist would.
What starts as a call to investigate his deceased mother's whereabouts evolves into a reevaluation of Mahito's understanding of grief, justice and destiny. When Mahito Maki learns the wizard intends to name him as his successor as a purveyor of universal balance, he asserts himself among tenured leaders despite his young age and inexperience. Mahito's decision to deny responsibility imparted to him by the wizard highlights his emotional growth. His ability to carry an otherworldly totem at the end of the film implies a magical evolution.
If Boy and the Heron can win an Oscar, the older movies would win infinite Oscars.

2D animation triumphed at the 2024 Oscars when the Boy and the Heron won over Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Hayao Miyazaki and his team illustrate how, even though Studio Ghibli has stuck with 2D, they are still innovating. The opening scenes demonstrate how far Ghibli's techniques of capturing motion and flames, blended with excellent sound, have come since the days of Spirited Away. Meanwhile, Ghibli's stories about healing, family and fantasy creatures are just as powerful as they have always been. With the recent success of the Boy and the Heron, 2D animation cannot be truly dead.

There's always Beyond the Spider-Verse to win the next award and I applaud Miyazaki's win. He is a talented storyteller that keeps wowing the world with his wild imagination.
Into The Spiderverse already has an Oscar.
@@mafeweigel I know. In terms of pacing and storytelling though, Spider-Verse has my vote. If The Wind Rises was Miyazaki's last film, I would have gave it to him.
Never underestimate Hayao Miyazaki!
I’m just glad this made the annoying Soiderverse fans mad.
After what those annoying spider verse fans did to spam the Incredibles 2 oscar campaign on twitter five years ago, they had it coming. So seeing this movie win over spider verse humbled them real quick.
Friendly reminder that there's only been 2 anime films that have won and it's both Ghibli movies.
There's so many Oscar-caliber anime movies that come from Japan like Your Name and A Silent Voice---the latter lost to Boss Baby for a nod.
This category is just old ass people hearing what their kids watch and not actually seeing the movies.
W win though, regardless. If that sentiment remained im sure Spider-Verse wouldve won. Any progress is better than nothing.
Spider-Man fans are going to have a field day and not a good one.
With that said, congratulations to The Boy And The Heron.
Finally, Disney's stranglehold on the Animated Feature category is at an end.
I knew The Boy and the Heron would win! The third international winner and first PG-13 winner! Truly astounding! 🔥
Spirited Away, Boy and the heron, what is number 3?
@@OscarMPG1 Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is from the UK.
@@madmanonyt9943Unfortunately the oscars dont view as international because of dreamworks involvement
Never doubted Boy and Heron for even a second. Also I’m happy that the debate on who is gonna win best picture is over.
Rare Oscar W
That makes me so happy for Miyazaki!!😭🙌🏻🙌🏻 Thank you for all the beautiful movies you gifted the world.
Good job, The Boy and The Heron.
Miyazaki’s a legend 👌I loved that one video with his reaction to artificial intelligence too lol
Robot dreams got robbed
The Boy and the Heron truly feels like the culmination of Hayao Miyazaki's work in the fantasy genre that explores topics like youth and grief in gorgeously complex ways that are compelling for kids without talking down to grown-ups.
Miyazaki doesn’t care about the Oscar’s 😂
The Boy and the Heron shows a young boy coping with the death of a loved one.
Miyazaki is in his 90’s all he gotta do is what he does. Well deserved !
This movie made me cry it’s so beautiful.
Miyazaki is 83
Hes is not even mid 80s yet. What you mean in his 90s
I definitely think The Boy and the Heron deserved this award the most, but I would’ve also been happy if Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse or Nimona won (I haven’t seen Robot Dreams since it hasn’t released in the US yet so I don’t know how good it is). Really the only nominee I don’t think deserved the award is Elemental
Miyazaki can’t miss. Dont we know that by now?
The Boy and the Heron is one of the best movies in the world! 🌎💕 I’m so glad the movie won!🏆😍 Also I’m so glad we won free tickets to see this awesome movie! GKIDS gave us free tickets!😃 Thank you Gkids!
even though some other runner ups deserved to be nominated like the super mario movie as another japanese related masterpiece beyond blockbuster standards, and even Nimona could have been another choice to win it for blusky triumph accolade while accross the spiderverse would have been predictable to win and Elemental an optional case for disney pixar at this poont, it is really refreshing that another hand drawn animated film, specifically a japanese production won the category, even giving the sign that japanese related people have some potential to improve the management on hollywood theoretically, makes sense?
I'm so happy that The Boy and the Heron won the award, and it is also the 2nd win for Studio Ghibli since Spirited Away won the award back in 2003.
I'm NOT happy that Hayao Miyazaki and his crew aren't there to claim the award as usual.
Its wonderful that spirited away isn't alone anymore
Agreed.
Aka "How Do You Live?"
Japan really just went to Oscars and yoinked 2 Awards from Disney, huh? kek
The Boy and the Heron has been an incredible success from day one, and all of that came together at the 96th Academy Awards with the victory as best animated feature, marking this Hayao Miyazaki's second Oscar after Spirited Away in 2002.
Congrats Miyazaki, finally an anime movie gets the recognition it deserves
Spirited Away won in 2003.
@@thunderpantzbruh that’s a decade ago lmao
@@xtcyrafa Two decades ago.

Deserved
The first adult animated film to win Best Animated Feature.
As this is the first adult animated film to win this trophy, who knew that Miyazaki coming out of retirement led to this historic moment
If that’s not the biggest middle finger to Disney, I don’t know what is!
Not only did their 100th anniversary film, Wish, not even get featured, but it was beaten by a 2D animated film!
How sad for Disney. 😂
Just watched. Complete mind-f***. It feels more like a Satoshi Kon movie than a Miyazaki one. But a masterpiece none the less.
Like a very imaginative old man telling his half-remembered childhood memories to his great-grandkids, filling the blanks with magic and fantasy. Which is exactly what this was meant to be.
DESERVED IT!!
Elemental was so good!
Yes but seeing pixar winning again is pretty underwhelming.
not that good, had to rely on diversity to get focus
Justice has been restored after Kaguya lost.
And the wind rises
It has finished, Justice goes to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!!!!!
Okay. Fine. Guess I will have to see the boy and the heron now.
I know right. I have to see how it beat out both Spiderverse and Nimona. Both of those two films are fantastic.
@@laurajones1773Nimona blows.
Not so fun fact: we have the same amounts of non disney wins as 2010s are. Hoping the academy improving and not be lazy and give it next year to inside out 2 or something else.
I would love either wild robot or memoir of snale winning. Lord of the rings war of ruhim could be good or even great since the oscars loves lotr series but im still skeptical, most precious of cargoes i have some hope but Hazavincus hasn't doing any good film since the artist(2011) but this look something new so i have some hope for it
The Boy and the Heron is an expansive, surreal metaphor for accepting reality even at its bleakest as the film follows a young boy on a journey through an eerie parallel world.
Even though I was personally hoping for Spiderverse to win, I'm ecstatic that a 2D animated movie won. Plus, Boy and the Heron was also fantastic as well, so I'm not bitter
I love Across the Spider-Verse (don’t get me wrong), but as an anime lover/fan, I’m proud Studio Ghibli earned their second BAF Oscar after Spirited Away (my all time favorite animated movie) 2 decades ago.
Hayao Miyazaki deserved it. Love The Boy & The Heron
