That is the very first time I have ever seen a column shifted manual transmission in a North American medium duty truck! That engine sounds very familiar. Sounds almost exactly like the engine whining in a school bus I used to ride as a child growing up. If I'm not mistaken, it was a Loadstar 1700 equipped with a 345 cubic inch V8 and 5 speed manual. What I would do, for the opportunity to get behind the wheel of one now, to take for a spin just to reminisce my childhood memories.
I have a 1968 International Loadstar CO-1700 has the 345, believe it is a 4 speed on the floor, has the 2 speed rear, and has power steering, we are fixing up to haul my garden tractors to tractor shows
Tried to drive one like that one time many years ago and could never figure out the shifting pattern as it was not to be found on the dash or anywhere I looked . You made it look easy .
Many of the older vehicles had column mounted shifters. The old G.M. buses had this type. Check out Bus Grease Monkey's own bus. Column 4 speed, before going to floor shifters. The linkage on the floor shifters would get hung up sometimes. Int'l made many V-8's,the largest being 549c.i.There was also 304,345,and 392c.i. The last if I remember correctly before discontinuing all gas engine production was 404c.i. All diesels after that. They basically went V-8 diesels, because the I-6 DT-358 and 466 stuck out too far behind the cab , taking up valuable cargo space. I don't think the Perkins was a big seller.
the mv 404 and the mv446 were the last gas engines. the 6.9 and 7.3idi diesel was based on those gas engines. I just finished doing a swap on my 1700 dump truck from a 446 to a 7.3 idi. it's a bolt in swap just had to get a new flywheel
I have one, never seen another one with a 5 on the tree. They are a handful with 350 bushels of corn on. We put power steering on ours. Is yours a 345 cid or 366 cid?
It was just the way they were built. Non standard shift patterns are not that uncommon in trucks. Like the Eaton RT and RTO series. The RT series had the first shift pattern in your comment but the RTO flipped the 4th and 5th positions to get a overdrive top gear without making internal changes to the gearbox. Then you get odd ones like the Eaton 7 speed. www.globaltransmissionsupply.com/7-speed-shift-pattern-Eaton-Fuller-600x342.png
As a teen I drove one of these with a manure spreader and a 345,great truck, good summer job,but didnt get many girlfriends.
Beautiful truck. Never seen a column shift 5 speed. Cool.

Love the 5 speed column shift.
This is a smart vehicle. To my Brit eyes the similarity between the styling of the cab and the Bedford TK is striking.

Love the look of these Cornbinder Cabovers. Was set to buy one just like this in '69, but someone beat me to it by an hour.
I had a 74 Cabover Cargostar with a 345. Neat ol truck

Beautiful truck. Turning it in to a box truck 🚛 is gonna be really nice
I have never seen a column shift with 5 speeds. Thanks for the video.
Love to see more about the gears on this. Love that shift.
My gosh Id like to own a truck like this for my firewood business.
That column shift is cool! Lots of these were used as fire trucks.
Good ole truck. Wish I could find one.
Diamond t tilt cabs had column even with a two speed axel that was in 1950s
No days at 77 years old I would never even be able to climb up in it let along drive it . Lol
I love it
I have a 78 transtar coe I think it would be awesome to do a flat bed
I drove one for a summer hauling firewood only she had a 4-71 Detroit turbo. Made a hellava ruckus in the cab. Lol
Love it
Shes a beast smooth runner
I had heard of this shifter on the tree but thought it was a myth
That's what a lot of us learned to drive on...me it was a 1970 Chevy Nova, I-6 250cid, "three on the tree"
