  • In this initial impressions we take a look at, The Honest Kitchens newest food product. Clusters, or what most of us would call kibble. What makes this different is The Honest Kitchen focus on quality ingredients, sourcing and production. They have focused on trying to offer a very nutrient dense and premium human grade dog food but in kibble form.
    Compared to traditional kibble you have some big difference. One it meets human grade ingredient quality, is produced used a combination of cold pressing and low temp slow cooking along with dehydration. This along with cage free animal proteins adds up to a compelling option for those looking for a high quality dog food or great supplement to their current dog food. These also work extremely well for treats, rewards or toppers.
    You can can get them in three sizes 1 LBS, 5 LBS or 20 LBS. Proteins that are offered include Chicken, Beef and Turkey. All are single animal protein which is great for dogs with protein sensitivities or allergies. Beyond that they all contain the same animal protein organ meat ( like liver ) as well as a great base set of ingredients that allow for rotational feeding.
    In addition you will not find common fillers like pea proteins, beet pulps, glycerin, any type of meals or by products. It is truly a simple mix of quality ingredients that offer good nutrient value.
    Made in the USA
    No by-products
    No preservatives
    No corn, wheat, soy or GMO ingredients

    This was a great review! I’m so excited I just bought this for my dogs (pug and lab). They already eat the dehydrated formula which you add water to. They like the kibble crunch, but we couldn’t find a kibble we felt good about feeding them. I’m so happy they finally came out with this!

      Great! Glad you found the review useful. I will be doing a final review soon but do feel it s a good option for those considering a quality kibble option. I will be looking at offering a top kibble options soon which I think will be useful especially for those who are interested in rotational feeding. That being noted Honest Kitchen make this easy by offering multiple protein choices. Give your pups a treat from us and have a great day!

    Cant wait to try this brand! I have been doing my research on dog foods and very impressed with the process of your foods. I didnt realize that almost all dog foods are cooked at such a high heat taking all of the nutritional value out.I will be switching my bostons to this food.

    My dog loves the chicken kibble. He has bone cancer and we've been trying cleaner, lower carb fresher food but he loves kibble so I feed this as a supplement after his main meal of chicken I cook mixed with Honest Kitchen base mix (which smells really nice -- like real food!). After trying lots of different things (and paying a small fortune for NomNom only to have him have an allergic reaction), this Honest Kitchen combo is a good solution for us.

      Thanks for the feedback. I agree a freshly cooked protein along with a base is a great option compared to many “fresh cooked” dog foods. Best wishes to you and your pup. Interesting feedback regarding the allergic reaction can you provide more specifics? You also may want to consider a protein rotation as chicken is very high in omega 3’s and not ideal in regard to inflammation. That being noted I fully understand staying with something that works and your dog enjoys. Have a great day!

    I love the clusters. I adopted my dog 5 years ago and put her on the dehydrated food. I got to thinking maybe kibble would be better for teeth? Tried good brands of kibble through the years then was very happy to discover the whole food clusters. In fact, I just ordered one 5 pound bag of each flavor. I’ve had her on the turkey for quite awhile but time to change up. She’s only an 11lb dog but heck 15lbs of dog food around-won’t be needing any for awhile and I know she is set. She is no picky eater by any means but I feel good giving her a higher quality of dog food. Recent check up at the vet;her coat is great, lab work great, wonderful wellness exam.

      Thanks for the view and comment. Additionally thank you for the feedback and insight always great to have this information. Also kudos on considering food rotation I think it is key for any dog to ensure a healthy gut and overall health. I do feel teeth wise dehydrated is better than kibble but some dogs have preferences that can be developed when it comes to temperature and texture. Have a great day and awesome 2020. Best wishes to you and your pup!

    Is there a full review of this kibble yet?

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 роки тому

      I originally planned to put out the review a while back but due to some issue ended up not being able to complete the review and edit needed. I would like to revisit it as they have updated their line since DCM become a hot topic. That being noted I still feel they offer a solid option for those considering a kibble based diet/dog food.
      That being said for a similar cost if you can get it in your area I would consider Nature's Logic Distinction as well. www.natureslogic.com/distinction/
      A dehydrated option with a base ( which you can get from Grandmas Lucy's, The Honest Kitchen, Sojos ) is also a good choice and you can add your own animal based protein. If you have any other questions let me know.

      Yes, no problem for Yorkie and they also have a small breed option.
      If you want very high grade Ziwis, Sundays and Only Natural Pet Max Meat are great options for smaller breeds with no excess carbs which can easily add weight and very high quality.
      Kiwi kitchens is also a good option and pre packs from Stella and Chewy or Just Food for Dogs.

    Isn't it bad to have so many synthetic vitamins? I was interested in this for my dog until I saw how many vitamins add in there are

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  4 роки тому +4

      It depends, vitamin mixture / additives are common amongst almost all foods due to needing to meet AAFCO standards. They are not inherently bad just like in foods we eat which have many items. It depends on the mixture % and sourcing. You will generally find to meet these standards almost all kibble will include these and even many cooked dog foods and even some prepackaged raw. Foods that dog not and purely meet it by ingredient composition you will find will be considerably more expensive.
      Overall you have to look at the company and their track record and commitment to sourcing and ingredients. In my opinion I would be ok with Honest Kitchen but yes I do agree that ideally all vitamins and minerals would come solely from the food but as noted this almost impossible to meet the standard requirement even if the food does meet as there is shelf life requirements and other factors that need to be accounted for.
      This will be part of my questions in future food reviews including clusters review which I have planned for sometime early next year as still working on all the cooked dog food reviews. In the interim I have asked Honest Kitchen already about their sourcing for vitamin mixture.

      It's literally the very last ingredient meaning there is such a small amount and is used as a natural preservative in so many dog foods. If you look it up, it is deemed safe on most sites for dogs with no scientific evidence that it causes seizures. Only mentioned by some random sites.

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog

    The new one they have is better because it doesn't have potatoes and peas
    my only gripe is the carb content is to high. They need at least 33%~36% protein and 15% max fat

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  2 роки тому

      I think this really varies on the breed and specifically the age and activity level of the dog. Carbs along with fat are items need to be carefully considered as it can easily lead to obesity but this is alongside sensible feeding portions can be pretty easy to compensate for. Considering your can easily top a high quality protein of choice you can supplement the base to offer a high animal protein based composition if you find it critical.
      Ultimately you need to look at the total composition of the ingredients and not solely on protein a great example of this is in raw diets you will commonly find the protein % is "low" maybe times around 12 to 14% but you will find athletic and high performance breeds can thrive of these % ( also consider though that the composition of the blend is generally 70% muscle meat compared to lower quantities in kibble or processed foods ).
      I do agree though I would look to adjust serving size so as to now reduce the overall carb and fat composition. Thanks for your comment.

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 роки тому

      It really comes down to the quality of the animal proteins and carbs. Ideally, I prefer no cards especially for dogs with low activity levels. Dogs who are working or have high activity levels can benefit from carbs. As to the vitamins, this is assured through supplemental ( addition of synthetic vitamins ). They have also reformulated for those who have concerns regarding DCM. Alternatively, you can also go with a fresh food diet if you really want to move away from a lot of supplemental cards and non-animal proteins as these will be pretty prevalent in most kibbles. That being noted check out some of the other options we have looked at or something like Natures Logic Distinction.

    Grain free is bad . Do that make Grain in this brand?

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  4 роки тому +5

      That is not true. Grain free can be a good option just like one that includes grains or carbs. It is important to understand that while dogs can process plants and carbs it is not to the same degree as animal proteins. The important factor is that the ingredients meet a standard to ensure enough potency in vitamins and minerals that are present along with supporting good gut health for ideal absorption. This can also be affected by water intake and fat intake. In many cases for some kibble foods especially those that do not rotate they should be supplemented with other foods to ensure you meet high enough potency of required vitamins and minerals as well as ensuring a strong foundation of sufficient amino acids. This also does not account for breed specific items, mixed breeds and other important circumstances.
      You can easily “compensate for this though” either by feeding fresh food or raw or by adding quality live supplementation items like goat’s milk, salmon oil, fresh sardines etc. You could also consider a direct supplement like inclover bio vibrant ( this is a great option and extremely easy ).
      Remember nutrient density is also reduced due to many aspects of production like heat and processing and that % can be skewed in foods due to the inclusion of high amount of plants as opposed to animal proteins. When higher amount of animal proteins are present especially organ meats you are headed in the right direction. A very good example is foods can include flaxseed as a Omega 3 source but it would need to be consumed in extremely high % to be absorbed to the same degree and benefit a dog compared to a much small amount of salmon or salmon/fish oil.
      Many times, dog foods rely too much on less nutrient dense plant protein as opposed to animal proteins like organs which are critical for providing higher amounts of important items like carnitine, methionine, cystine, taurine. This is what the issue ultimately is. If you prefer to look at high quality grain inclusive option consider Honest Kitchen whole grain (dehydrated food ) or Stella & Chewy with Grain. For me though I would be fine using this and supplementing some additional ingredients or something like biovibrant.

      Experiences With My Dog You might want to research how Grain Free is linked to cardiomyopathy, heart disease. Dogs don’t process foods as we do and high starch foods turn into sugar too quickly and has long term damaging effects in dogs such as heart disease and yes, low temperature much better bc besides synthetic ingredient, source of where they get their meats (bc there’s no regulation they can be allowed to add euthanized animals to dog food), and things like high temperature food processing, so many aspects of kibble (high calories, not enough protein) is giving out dogs cancer. People, too many of our dogs are getting cancer and the pet food industry is lying to us..... Look up, as one example, how grain free dog food is linked to heard disease then see it for yourself. At the least, don’t give things like foods with potatoes and pea protein. There are a lot better options are there for good carbs, specially if you’re making the food yourself whether you give right or cook in the temperature,with that have a low glycemic index like broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc, etc. Give them real meat and all the other macro and micronutrients they need. Look up Rodney Habib, Dr Karen Becker, Kimberly Guthrie and Dr Judy Morgan webinars and her Yin Yang for dogs book. Saying that grain free is not bad aside, this was a very well presented review. 👍 Very pleasant voice and demeanor.

      @@geewiz8253 this is based off of one study that ultimately was inconclusive. If you read the study carefully, we only know the correlation and not causation. For all we know it could be an instance of skewed reporting, so there definitely needs to be more research about this -- but just the one study isnt enough to completely demonize grain-free meals for dogs.

    Isn't peas, lentils, other legume seeds and potatoes in dog food is being investigated because of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs? So, how can this be a good dog food?

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  2 роки тому +1

      At this time it is still not clear what the route cause of DCM is and it will require further analysis. I do feel though a animal protein heavy diet is favored vs a heavier carb, fat and plant protein diet. The heavy shift in many foods to add some items peas or lentils can be causes of concern but you have to look at the whole composition.
      Overall a whole pea or whole lentil and whole potatoes are not necessarily bad the bigger question though is the QTY being consumed excessive. This is why I generally advocate for a raw diet first as it focused on a simplified ingredient composition with much higher % of animal based protein and little to no plant or carbs.
      I would generally advise that a food like clusters probably be balanced with an add in high quality animal protein that could be cooked and easily prepped for the week. Scale back on the portion side ( which would be recommended regardless as the carb count and fat count are higher than what I would like to see especially compared to more simplified and carb light diets ).
