Sundays Air Dried Human Grade Dog Food - Better than cooked & kibble? Initial Impressions

  • In this video, I go hands-on with Sundays Human Grade Air-Dried Dog Food. This new company is offering high quality, human-grade air-dried dog food as an alternative to premium kibble as well as cooked dog foods like Ollie, The Farmers Dog, Pet Plate, Nom Nom, and others.
    So what makes it different? In my opinion, it differs in three ways. First, it is air-dried which allows it to be stored in a container or in your panty and not refrigerated. Very similar to a kibble you get convenience and little to no prep is required. While it is similar to kibble in this respect it is superior due to being air-dried. Air drying is superior to kibble production as it is gentler and uses less heat and maintains more nutrients, palatability and can be easily rehydrated.
    In addition, Sundays recipe also differs from many kibbles in that it is a limited ingredient single animal protein recipe. This is great for those who are concerned about allergies as well as do not want to pay for high about of carbs as opposed to animal protein. Lastly is that it is free of anything artificial including synthetic vitamins and minerals which is a rarity amongst dog foods even human-grade dog foods.

    The way I look at my dog food is pay it now with good quality food, or pay it later at the vet with allergies or other issues! I learned this the hard way 😔

      100% this is a great way to look at it pays returns in the long run. Also I find higher quality food can be healthier in regards to weight and also have a smaller qty and supplement through natural chews.

      I am currently in the situation you were in and have finally narrowed my list. Raw food is highly promoted, but I am a bit ambivalent. I may change my mind, but for right now, I'm considering other options.

    What a nice idea! Love that it is similar to traditional kibble but has such high nutritional value. Personally, it’s too expensive to feed as main meals but using this as treats sounds like a great idea. Thanks for sharing!

    Terrific video. I'm getting a puppy and was wondering if you think Sundays would be appropriate as a puppy food? They claim its all life stages.

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  2 роки тому

      Hi Richard! Did you get your puppy? Sundays is puppy approved. In fact most cooked dog foods/air dried or premium dog foods are all ages. I would note it is important at a young age like a puppy to develop food diversity and comfort with a range of food so keep this in mind. Similar to adult dogs a heavy reliance on kibble especially one type could be problematic overtime. You of course want to allow for time for the dogs to form a solid digestive track but you should not be afraid of rotational feeding and trying different types of foods. Best of luck!

What advice would you give us? We are currently feeding him allIt but find it’s not quite what we’re looking for and it seems to not agree with his stomach. • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Vanessa! Thanks for your comment and question.
      Pet Gourmet is new to me so I would need to research them. Honest Kitchen is proven company who offers a solid range of options that I generally have no issues recommending as an alternative to kibble or more expensive cooked dog foods. I do think the protein amount is a little low but you can easily supplement with some lightly cooked protein if you want to add a little more. They also have good availability and are reasonably priced. Dr. Harvey's has some great options and I appreciate they have a lots of specialized options but they are definitely on the higher side of the pricing at the same time they have a focus on some very good ingredients and in many ways similar to the honest kitchen. You have options for raw and DIY feeders which is nice. In my opinion I do think raw feeding is a better and lower cost option even accounting for specialized needs if you are comfortable with it and there are many pre packaged raw options available. As for healthy dogma I would need to do a little more research to provide a comparison.
      Overall it looks like you have been looking at pre mix options is this correct? It may be worth doing a dedicated video on pre mix where there is a base but you add in your own protein. I would also note that most of these still include synthetic vitamins even Dr Harvey's who prides it's on message a no additive based ingredient list. This is not inherently a bad this as it is done to ensure it meets standards but some dog foods can achieve this purely through the composition of their food/ingredients. This is the case even in a premium kibble like Nature's Logic distinction which I think is a good option for those looking for a premium, simple and easy to serve option that has a focus on quality ingredients and no synthetic vitamins or minerals. Hope this helps!
      Recap I would be fine with the honest kitchen or Dr. Harvey's.

    I feed raw primarily but was feeding Orijen for breakfast since I work full shifts and didn't want him hungry throughout the day. Well after my dog started having bad diarrhea, gas and even eating his own poop I checked online and saw Orijen changed their recipes and they are now significantly lower quality than they were before and they're more expensive. I'm switching my dog to Sundays, hopefully he does well on this! Otherwise I'll have to split his raw meal up and I'd rather not do that.

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 роки тому

      As you saw in the video the pieces are pretty firm like treats/jerky but a bit software. You will have some crumbs/bits at the bottom of the bag but it holds its shape pretty well.
      If you want to try something a little less expensive but similar to get a sense you can try out Only Natural Pet Max Meat -
      www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/only-natural-pet-grain-free-maxmeat-air-dried-real-meat-dog-food
      I would say Sundays are firmer but the overall feel is somewhat similar. Hope this helps.

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 роки тому

      This is a frustrating aspect of how they run their store/online orders. You need to sign up for the service and then essentially "pause" or cancel after you receive your first order. There is no easy way to order a sample or single order. You are essentially signing up for a reoccurring subscription. The best way to handle it is once you receive log back in and immediately pause the follow up order.

    Do you think these are easily breakable or chewable ? My pup is so small he’s only 5lbs with a tiny jaw :/

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, they are softer than many "jerky like treats" dogs even with small mouths should not have an issue if you want to be cautious you can break them up a bit prior to feeding. Keep in mind though for "food" dogs digestion is very different than humans - A dog's digestion, on the other hand, doesn't begin until the food reaches the stomach this is why it is more like they scraf down/gulp there food. Chewing tends to take place when they need to break down the food.
      You can slow down the eating process through the use of a slow feeder.

    Does this food have 32% Crude Fat? Wouldn't that cause pancreatitis potentially? Am I missing the way fat is listed in dog food? I thought that the typical Fat recommendation for dog food should be under 15%. I noticed that usually Raw and Cooked has lower fat content, but Freeze-dried and this Air Dried seems to have high Fat content. What say you? tks

    • @petergrant9259
      @petergrant9259 2 роки тому

      Fat is good for dogs but for American couch potato dogs, yes 32 % will cause loose stool and possibly pancreatitis. . Kibble foods are made mostly from rendered meat meal meaning the fat has been cooked off from the protein source. ...I can only assume a air dried food having 32 % fat is not using skinned whole chicken breast. They most likely are using skin, and all the chicken humans do not like, In reality home cooking is the way to go if you are spending that amount. IMO...based on research of diets and the manufacturer, Pro Plan All Life Stage Chicken diets are the go to diets. You may not like the ingredient panel..... but see how your dog looks after a couple of bags. Dog food is just marketing. It's why Home cooking is the only way you can know the quality in every meal served. You can have Chewy send free to your door a 37.5 bag of Pro Plan 27-17 Chicken and Rice Active for $49.00 and give better results then Sunday's.

  • @dianer939

    I have this food here , however I don’t understand how much I need to feed my 11 pound chipoo , she is 4 yrs old . The box says 1/4 cup a day . Well first it does seem to be enough and second adding to a measuring cup . Hardly any food makes a 1/4 cup . How could this be right once a day for my dog . She lives it but the amount can’t be right .
    How would I weigh in solid ounce on a scale ?

    • @ExperiencesWithMyDog
      @ExperiencesWithMyDog  3 роки тому +1

      I would use their guide as a guide I have found based on my dogs breed, weight and activity I can find considerably less that was is recommended. My dogs currently eat ( once a dog ) and is between 6.5 to 8oz of food which I way on a scale. For fresher better quality good you can feed less. As to what is the right amount that can really vary based on the factors. I would say though many times I would say you can easily 2/3 of a recommended portion size if note less. As always though weigh this against supplements and treats you give your dog. You can discuss with your vet or reach out to the company for their recommendation. For me I would prefer to feed my dogs a higher quality meal that is smaller but more nutrient dense than a "filler" carb heavy based food.

      One of my dogs passed away from cancer before all these healthier version of dog food were available. I’m feeding my other dog better food now and no more kibble, and she’s looking so much better and healthier. It’s totally worth spending on expensive dog food for your dog if you love your dog. You want him or her to stay with you for a long time. I really missed my deceased dog and regret that I was feeding her kibble food her whole life.

    This company is genuinely awful. First off, dog food made my dog sick. It’s highly prone to mold so that might be the cause.
    Second - they’re super sketchy. I thought I was buying 1 bag of dog food. Turns out I was signing up for a subscription that costs 2x the “starter price.”
    If you’re going to use kibble, use one that doesn’t have mold. If you want to use a premium food, go with farmers dog or Ollie.
    Sunday’s is a sketchy company with low quality product.
