    This brand literally sued the FDA in 2007 to prove their food was actually human grade. They won. So no buzzwords when it comes to human grade for The Honest Kitchen.

    I've been feeding my 4 dogs honest kitchen dehydrated dog food for the past 3 years, and they've never been healthier. Before, I was feeding them ACANA, and they had more health issues and vet visits. The honest kitchen is expensive, but I saw a huge savings when it came to vet bills.

    Human grade is not a buzz word. There is feed grade or human grade and there is most definitely a difference.

    The doctor here does well with her nutritional analysis but it's just as important (if not more) to make sure these companies aren't poisoning your dogs with their sourcing and manufacturing processes. I don't trust them at all.

    Thank you Dr Rea for this video! I once considered giving this food to my Cocker Spaniel but now I'm glad I never did! Considering that here in Canada a 20lb bag costs CAD$120, I will stick to Science Diet. At least I know what I am paying for! I look forward to your new video every Purrsday! Cheers! 😻🐾

    Hi Dr Rea - I’ve enjoyed your videos so much and I’m glad to learn. Where can we suggest a food for review. My Vet recommended Purina EN Gastroenteric Veterinary Diet. Using your scoring system it seems fine (like an 8 bc the Calcium and Phosphorus is .1 difference - or is that close enough?).

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  6 місяців тому +2

      EN is a prescription diet and so it’s use is for medical reasons and so your vet would have made that recommendation based on your pets specific needs and therefore my system doesn’t apply. My system is for well animals that don’t need nutritional management of disease.

    I have been noticing a lot of processed seed oil in dog kibble.....like canola oil. I avoid these, and wonder if my dogs should avoid them too? I like that Honest Kitchen does not have any of the inflammatory oils.....they use coconut oil.

    Thanks for the review! Dr Rea, what is your take on the source of the vitamins added to kibbles to make them AFCO compliant or meeting other standards? Ex. Vitamins and minerals derived from petroleum based products or hydrochloric acid VS plant or animal derived vitamins and minerals. My understanding was that long term, synthetic vitamins and minerals can be detrimental to our pets organs. Is that true?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  6 місяців тому +2

      In my training this was not a topic that was emphasized so I can’t speak with much knowledge on this subject. In general our pets unfortunately have such a shorter time horizon than humans that the statistical difference in some of these long term health implication claims is not likely significant. I know a lot of studies are extrapolated from human studies but in my opinion you cannot reasonably make that comparison. I’d have to defer to a boarded vet nutritionist on that one.

    I fed the Honest Kitchen dehydrated to one of my dogs who had cancer and didn't want to eat. It looked strange but she liked it quite a bit. I could easily hide her meds in it as well. In most other situations I wouldn't feed it.

    Happy Purrsday to you! I am glad you qualified your opposition to raw food. You know the story of my cat Panda and why I feed my cats raw ground beef. I can certify that my cats' chicken thighs and ground beef are human edible. LOL As a kid, I ate Milk Bone dog biscuits. I know of a veterinarian that says she would eat dog food if she could! A 70 pound PUPPY? Wow. Another informative video.

      I show and breed Miniature Pinschers, and I have been trying to learn as much as I can about nutrition. Your videos taught me things I didn’t know, so thank you for your time making them!
      I have been very concerned regarding what I feed my dogs, I have tried the very expensive foods such as farmina, also tried purina pro plan, inukshuk and TLC. After really investigating and watching your videos as well, I am really considering ignoring ingredients and feeding a study backed food, Royal Canin. I would love love love if you could do a review specifically for small breed dogs adults and seniors, and maybe compare a few different foods to the royal canin small breed line, and what are some of the important things we need to pay attention to with the smaller breeds. Thanks again! 😊

      @@AnimalDocRea Hi Dr. Rea, I have not emailed them. After they missed the marks for calcium and phosphorus for the food my French bulldog would need, the "human grade" meant nothing to me. Almost all foods that I have calculated using your method, have failed the calcium and phosphorus levels. I am switching my Frenchie back to Purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach after a bad experience on the farmer's dog. Is it ok to be slightly off on the calcium and phosphorus or is that set in stone? Also, are there any reviews that you've done that have met all the requirements of the small animal clinical nutrition book? Sorry for the long comment/question. I was unfortunately sucked into the "TikTok nutritionist/fresh food/ingredient" mess and now I'm learning a lot from you! Thank you very much!

    human grade means that the FDA approves it for human consumption, the dead euthanized dogs and animals that have died of unnatural causes. That's what's in feed grade. There is a definite difference between human grade and feed grade says the FDA

      I looked into this a little further wanting to find Wikipedia’s notation for the definition of “human grade”, and I could not find it…not saying it’s not there, I just did not see it. So, I did look for a definition through Google and actually went to AAFCO’s website. While it is true there is no legal definition for this term “human grade”, under the AAFCO guidelines there are rules to labeling pet food as “human grade”. I found a .pdf document off that website that shows the regulations for labeling pet food as such. I found it interesting. Also, on AAFCO’s website it has some FAQ’s with questions and answers where it specifically mentions the long debated idea that AAFCO allows dead diseased and dying animals as part of the allowable ingredients dog food. It is a VERY interesting read and I highly encourage all of you that are interested in finding a good dog/pet food to feed your furry family members, to read it. Instead of going to sites that are telling you their opinions of AAFCO and the FDA, GO DIRECTLY to the SOURCE ITSELF and there you will find TRUE answers to your questions. In obtaining my bachelors degree years ago, we were always taught to go to the source with exact facts and then formulate our OWN opinions. Yes this involves THINKING and can be used on any subject from dog food to whatever. I’m not debunking Dr. Rae at all, I just bring this up to try to further everyone’s education and knowledge on this subject and add to the whole discussion. I do believe Dr. Rae is extremely helpful in guiding us to make better decisions!! I look forward to her further reviews.
