This legit helped, about to load a friend's bike on and realised his clutch plates aren't separating, after investigating found yeah the outer basket has grooves. So as a temporary fix, will be doing this so we can rip tomorrow and replace later. Excellent video
Pulled my 95 XR600R apart yesterday and found the reason for my slipping clutch- a severely worn clutch basket! I despaired because the part isn't made anymore. Then I found your video. Thanks so much. I'll be doing this tomorrow!
Great Video! I've done the same thing and now the gear shifting on the bike is smoother! The downside to this is that this is a temp fix unfortunately. That aluminium is not suitable material for this. One thing to note, after I did this, I notice a slightly noisier bike with slight more 'vibrations' to it.
Hi sir, after file the grove the clutch performance can last long? Or after sometimes the busket hub is start wear again due to already has a huge gap between that..
I know this is an old discussion but, I wonder how applying a hard ceramic coating to these parts might avoid the ridges developing? Super durable coatings are being utilized more and more on internal engine parts and this seems like a good place to do that. Along with preventing the ridges from developing, the lower friction surface should make for an easier clutch pull as well.
I think its the fact that we don't expect to see large mileage on bikes is a factor...i am just restoring a 1979 Honda dohc and it only has 20 thousand miles on the clock and looks correct. I don't think many classic cars would have escaped use.
great video, i have a very low milage 1985 Xl600R when i change my clutch i will check it for bumps. what exhaust do you have on your bike, i want to change mine but cant find anything. i have looked for just the muffler guess im going to have to fab my own with just the muffler. stock exhaust is a little to quiet for me.
How long will a careful first time file job last before it gets noisy and begins to fail? Seems so much better to get a new basket , but thats $300 and you're still going to have a half worn out inner basket, old springs, and cushions. One could spend $1000, and have to do all the work yourself. I saw a new basket for $215, and one for $400. Will the cheap ones hold up ok riding one to two hours a week?
Just replace the springs with heavy duty springs and the plates and it will be fine .. no need to file . One to two hours is nothing , make sure don't buy any Chinese shit crap .. better from Taiwan or India .
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Thats what I thought. I filed the grooves on both inner and outer. The friction plates still look good. I cant tell about the springs. I dont want a stiff clutch lever. I hope it will last through the summer at least.
Brother.... You have given me a little picture of the working of the clutch on your motorcycle. Que1. My clutch is a bit Noisy ( Noisy-er ) than my other two bikes. Somehow I can flip into till the 4th Gear....but its Not getting into 5th. 2. What is the issue....???
got a 86 xr600r that just needs put back together if anyone is in the market. smoked the rings on it so I took it apart immediately and had the cylinder and head sent off. has a .10 over piston and fresh valves. something knicked a valve ever so slightly. had the seat cut and a slightly larger valve was put in its place. it has original plastics and original dual carbs that work beautifully. May need some brake clean and air through it to clean off any residue from sitting for a year completely down to the frame. ready for restoration just needs the motor put back together. everything is there to put it together including a new timing chain and full set of gaskets. what should I try to get out of it? if anyone is interested ask for my email
Yeah I mentioned that in the video and put a picture of one on there. They don't make one for the xl600r though from what I've seen. Plus, they're 250 bucks

3 years later and this still helping people, thanks!
I really appreciate these separate in depth videos for those of us that want to know more. Great job and thanks.
Learned more about how a motorcycle clutch operates from this video than any other. Great explanation. Thanks
That's awesome to hear! Thanks for dropping a comment

Im pretty sure this fix sticking clutch not slipping clutch
@@SwapSupra it fixed my slipping clutch. I filed down the grooves and did nothing else to it and the slipping went away.
@@aTuWitty maybe fix both sticking and slipping then 🤷♀️😅
Thats intresting, i have both slipping clutch and basket sounds on my 1980 Honda cb 650 so i think i have to try this :)
Hi! Did it work with the sound?

That was extremely well done - magnificent work!
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

Great video, Chris! I don't even own a bike and learned a lot. The marker hack will come handy for me on other projects. Thanks man.
Thanks David! Glad to hear you got some value from it. Yeah the marker trick really works good if you're looking for precise results.
Very good and helpful video. And I like your wording to explain the parts and noices. Thanks
Nice fix on the clutch basket
Thanks no name
Is there a video that shows to put the clutch back in?
Thanks good work Luis From Spain
Deeply love the study
Fantastic video! Just what I needed for the rd!
Impressive the way explained

Will start to wear again.

most files have a safe (non cutting) smooth side as well. You can use that side on the bottom so it doesnt take any material off
Good point you bring up. All of my files have cutting on all four sides. I'll have to double check though
This was an awesome video!

Hi I need help I did mine on a cbf125 and the bike won’t start now after riding it half way home any tips to get it up and running again?
Hi I filed my basket down nd now Its much better but not 100% shall I file the one on the inner basket aswel
Awesome. Thanks bud
Thumbs up 👍 thank you 😊
Great thankyou very much!
great explanation ...thank you.
What was the symptom of this unsmooth surface? Did you felt dificulty to change gears?
He explained towards the beginning of the vid. One or multiple plates could get stuck in the groves so you can't engage the clutch
Great video!!
Thanks Nicholas!
HOW DID YOU TAKE IT OUT IT SKIPPED THE ONLY PART I NEEDED PLEASE HELP

Thoseo's heavy duty springs can be really hard on the hand. Especially in the nitty-gritty trails
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Personally I have no issues with heavy duty clutch springs , actually I prefer it but you can also use a hydraulic clutch lever 👍
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Thats what I thought. I filed the grooves on both inner and outer. The friction plates still look good. I cant tell about the springs. I dont want a stiff clutch lever. I hope it will last through the summer at least.
Will grooves in the basket cause a heavy clutch pull or make it harder to kick start?
Yes
To the heavier clutch but no to making it harder to kick over
I filed my one for the 3rd time yesterday
Why do they do it from so crap materials

I've seen way worse on Drag Bikes with stock Baskets
I mean we're talking baskets that has Grooves like Shark Teeth

This wear is another reason why your beater bike won't select neutral to save its worthless life

what if i snapped a tiny piece of one finger off?
