Hello, thank you very much for your great video. 4 months ago I bought an XL600R from 1983 and am currently repairing it. The video comes at the right moment. Very well recorded and really well explained. 👍
That's more involved than my old 84 Yamaha Venture. I found that I didn't need to drain the oil if I placed the bike on the side stand and at that angle it was easier to work on the clutch replacement. Chris, you have the most entertaining site on UA-cam. My wife and I can watch you and Jen for hours. Joe and Ginny
Yeah the XR's only header is pretty sweet! I actually did a video about polishing that super trap too lol. I kind of did a half crumb job on it but it shines okay
Ahh I see this model does not have a separate clutch cover and you must remove the right side engine case cover as you have done. My XR400 has a round cover just for clutch work and people are always getting confused about the clutch cover vs the right side case cover. Thank you for the excellent video!
I have an 87 xl. That happened to mine when i used 20 50 oil. I changed to lighter weight oil and no more rattle on startup. Mabye the oil is too thick when cold.
Very good video. I own a Honda XL 600 LM 1985 made in Japan. I'm from Brazil. I'm doing the service by myself and video added good tricks to help, even I own the original shop manual. Thank you. Regards.
Thanks for this great video! I noticed on my bike when I took the pressure plate off that the bearing could be taken out very easily. It seems there is no play but it is definitely not 'pressed' in like you would expect from a bearing. Maybe best that I replace this bearing?
I don't trust torque specs on clutch pressure plate bolts anymore. Different bike but spec is 78 inch lbs, bolt snapped at 32 inch lbs 🙃 I get them well and snug and call it good. Mine were aluminum bolts though.
What an awesome bike, I've been looking to get another but I'm not rushing to buy. I always find that works best, I had a 400R but sold it when I had my daughter. Not sure if but I'm thinking of a Transalp or a KLR maybe, I just have to weigh my options and see what's out there. Basically I just want something for daytrips and backwoods exploration, stay safe bro!
Yeah man the xl600r's are a sweet bike! Truth is if I was going to buy something similar today I would definitely get an XR650L. But this one is very dear to me since I've had it for so many years and been through so much with it. A lot of people knock the kickstarter. I personally love it. But that's because my knee is still strong. Might not think that way a few years from now who knows. I always liked KLR's also. I used to have a 250 and a 650 also. Both great bikes. Good luck in your search.
I've been thinking about converting my swingarm and suspension to an XR650L I have five of these things I love riding them but they don't suck up bumps like my XR650L does 👍
The rattling noise that you hear at cold start is the oil filter (expecially not OEM filter). I have a question...on my 1988 NX650 dominator, I have the kickstart that sometimes disengage when loaded for the starting kick. The kickstart lever rotate free for about 1/3 of the entire run .. What I have to check? I appreciate a lot your videos they are very accurate!
Thank you so much for making this video. I'm working on a kickstarter return spring problem with an 84' xr500r, and this helped a ton. I'm a rookie at working on bikes. Quick question, what kind of silicone are you using on the gasket?
No problem! Great to hear it was helpful. I really like using Permatex the right stuff. A little smear rubbed on one side goes a long way. Or a tiny bead. Be careful not to use too much though. It should just barely start squeezing out the tiniest bit when you torque the cover bolts
Just put Valvoline 20-50 full synthetic motorcycle oil in my xl250r, said excellent wet clutch protection on the bottle. Should I have not used full synthetic?
Brilliant explanation, thanks a lot! Do you have a link to buy the EBC extra strength springs? I already have new friction plates, but I guess my slippery clutch issues really come from the old springs too loosen
Hi! I am about to change my clutch friction plates on my 1983 model. Would the clutch friction plate part number that you used here will fit my bike? Thanks in advance.
Hi there, great video! Can you help with the part number of the crankshaft oil seal? Can't finde it anywhere on the RIGHT CRANKCASE COVER Part drawings. Thanks, Thue Denmark
Great vid good I nfo! went to do a clutch on my 87' xr600r and found a few metal chips on my pulse gen. Everything on that side seems good. pulled the kicker gear and it also looks good. any ideas on where those chips could have come from?? time to split the cases? both screens and filter were clean. thanks in advanced!
Hey man I noticed your clutch basket slid right off the shaft with no effort at all, mine seems stuck, I pull on it and moves maybe a 16th of an inch out then stops like its getting stuck somewhere. I know it should slide right off the guide/bushing, I really can't figure out why thats stuck and I don't wanna break something or bend the basket trying to pry it off...
Hello! I would like to ask you a question. Is the rear brake disc an adaptation, from which motorcycle is it? I would like to implement this improvement on my motorcycle. Thank you in advance!!!
hi mate, my xr600r seams to have a weird clutch issue i think, when it's cold the clutch seams to stick disengaged, i can put it in gear and roll it like i have the clutch in, which makes roll starting impossible. have you ever come across this problem?
i know this a old vid but what swing arm and wheel is on your ride? i tried a dr650 wheel(disc) and it grabs maybe a little better then the old drum..............nice ride!
Thanks buddy i appreciate your time, ive been thinking of the swap for a bit ,looks like its time time to go to ebay! lol thank you again and im going to look at your other vids for help!
If I remember I think my comment was just for the reason your kick start wasn't returning properly. As to the click noise it could be a few things , a loose timing chain or oil pump could be slightly worn or could be wrong oil viscosity for the temperature in your area, but to be honest that sounds pretty normal for a 30-year-old bike my xl600r made the same noise as does my 2002 xr650l
Yeah basically the kickstarter gear makes a slight ratcheting noise when it's cold for about 20 seconds and then goes away. It's definitely just the cold oil. I run 10 W 40.
Either which way I appreciate you commenting that because it motivated me to pull the kickstarter gear apart and check the alignment. I was very surprised to see it was off by one spline.
I just went and looked back at the original top end noise video now. @11:23 Yeah you're right it didn't return all the way, that was actually the kick-start lever hitting my foot pedal or brake lever. I had to bring the kick start lever out a fraction of an inch on the splines and that corrected it. I thought you were referring to the clicking noise when the engine is running that I mentioned. Oops.
I'm guessing you didn't watch the video. Still makes that noise with the starter aligned properly. They all make that noise when it's cold and have thick oil

I need to tear into my xr600r. Thank you for being thorough and having great camera shots.
I certainly wish I could press the like button more than once!
Thank you very much!
No problem! Glad it was helpful
Not thqt i coild rebuild one now ( health problems) but actually from watching this video this seems relatively easy .thanks Chris ! Awesome Bike
Great step by step narration!
You are awesome man wish you could have saved my 1974 Suzuki. No one in Ohio would replace my piston ring.
Nice camera work and very informative thanks.
That exhaust looks amazing!🥵
Yeah the XR's only header is pretty sweet! I actually did a video about polishing that super trap too lol. I kind of did a half crumb job on it but it shines okay
Very helpful video i did the same work on my nx650 and now clutch is like new 😀 thank You and greetings from Poland!
Happy to hear you found the video helpful. Thanks and greetings!

Awesome man, in-depth and detailed explanation, thanks for sharing :)
My 86 XR 600 sounds just like that XL. Same startup whine and all. Thanks!
No problem! Good luck getting it taken care of

looks like a ton of fun, now i want one!

Put greaseat at engine side and glue the gasket at the cover part, you avoid disamble problem and need no new gasket.

Could be worn out splines or kickstarter teeth. Would need to be taken apart for inspection to verify. Should never slip
And thanks man I appreciate you checking the videos out and the feedback

I hope that was the shift shaft behind the clutch lol bc I can't find anything but this and its close to a xr650l motor

What kind of exhaust is on your bike I just bought an 1987 and the pipe on mine is super rusty. Cheers
Please can you do a video on how did you ungrade it to xr600r suspension
I have just finished rebuilding my 1984 XL600R. I see you have an oil temperature dipstick. Any way you can share link to buy?
I got it from xr's only.com

Thanks. I made a brief overview video on it a long while back. yea. Google NoNonsenseKnowHow Xl600r suspension. I think i touch on the rear in that?
thenx man for good video
You're welcome!
Hey man I just got the same bike like yesterday lol and was wondering where you get all your parts and if you can get part from a new one for it
Usually whoever has them cheapest on eBay or any of the OEM parts sites. I usually price check around

Yes it's rear disc brakes from a XR650L
Thank you!!

My xr just shuts off when I try put it in 1st or 2nd they said the gear not catching neutral does it mean i got remove those plates an get new ones ?
you don't show when you put the kickstarter gear back in, do you have to rotate it to a certain point ?

It's from an XR650L. I did a short video showing some details on it a long while back. Used the XR650L front forks also

Nah you don't have to do anything like that with these
I got a spare engine from an 86 that I’m putting into my 85 real soon so found your video just in time
Awesome!
Hello, what is the temperature of your engine when you ride ling trip off road?
Thanks,
Like 250F or so
What exhaust is that?
I snapped one of the clutch pressure plate bolts at 108inch-pounds ;(
It's really best to do them by feel from my experience. But of course that takes years of talking fasteners to be accurate with.
Thats why always use ghries on my gaskets then it doesnt get stuck
❤❤❤
Looks like a 1985
1986
It's been painted
Okay got you I was going to say because I've had a 1986 and currently have a 1987 and they are both white frame red engine
Hey bud , just to let you know , your starter making that noise because its not aligned properly .
I'm guessing you didn't watch the video. Still makes that noise with the starter aligned properly. They all make that noise when it's cold and have thick oil
