In this AVGN the Nerd covers Chex Quest, a pack-in game for Chex Cereal from 1996. This is Angry Video Game Nerd episode 171. Chex Quest is a non-violent first-person shooter video game created in 1996 by Digital Café as a Chex cereal promotion aimed at children aged 6-9 and up. It is a total conversion of the more violent video game Doom (specifically The Ultimate Doom version of the game).

I like how the nerd incorporates the Brutal Doom mod....oh wow, I played all the official Doom stuff on it....but hey, I also enjoyed Chex Quest
What’s really great is that even the plot of Chex Quest is basically a kid-friendly Chex-themed version of the plot of Doom.
The 2nd game did the same thing, it's the plot of Doom 2. You go back to Chextopia or whatever it's called and everybody's been captured and Flemoids took over the planet.
I'm impressed that he got 4k to work on his C64.

While I still think Brutal Doom is overrated and actually prefer D4D, it was a pretty stellar plug.

Especially when Doom itself has so many faulty ports of its original, its nice that these people did it so well even after slapping a goofy skin on top of it.

The Earthbound episode already proved that.
Plenty of the NES games he reviewed were pretty good too, I'd say this one most reminds me of the Mario 3 review where it is all nice and positive the whole way but gets comically dark right at the end

Brutal Doom unfortunately breaks it.
Or at least, this was my experience; the keys stopped working properly and some enemy sprites were broken. I had to use 'give keys' in order to progress.

Chex Quest isn't merely a Doom clone - it quite literally IS a Doom mod. I think it was actually possible to access some of Doom's original levels from within Chex Quest.
It's basically just a re-skin with some tweaked game mechanics. It really is amazing to me that this game came with a box of cereal. It was so much fun

This is definitely one of the best what i dub "new age AVGN" videos. A personal favorite of mine
I would say the best “new age AVGN” episodes are Chex quest, Pepsiman, resident evil survivor, spawn, and the town with no name one the amiga CD.
Of all the good games to appear on AVGN, I didn’t expect Chex Quest to be one of them.
Didn't expect him to review Earthbound either. It's ironic that some of his best episodes comes when he mainly reviews GOOD games. This and the Earthbound episode is in my Top 10 favorite AVGN episodes

Building on the doom engine is a life hack
It was only a matter of time, well to be expected by anyone who actually follows him.
Yeah, it's actually rather surprising that the game would be so good. But, then again, it's just a bowdlerized version of Doom, so it's going to be engaging.
The main thing they could have screwed up would have been too much advertising and level design.

i'd be down for it, not just the shitty designers but the good ones too, like the fans that made a Star Control II reboot so good that the creators supported.
That reminded me of something: I heard somebody was able to track down the developer of Hong Kong 97 and interview them. It was kinda cool, found out a lot about the game and the creator, despite the game not being any good.

I think it's a good idea, but i also think that would change the spirit of avgn. For example, did you saw the latest videos of JonTron? 3 years have passed since he last updated a video doing a review of videogames, three fucking years, he's making what he likes or want to do, but i miss those old videos, 'cause it has a spirit, something that is the only thing keeping away from you to stop watching those videos that you seen before, that's the thing, that's the spirit, anyway, if the enterviews were something more like a backgrond thing

@@The_Totes_Adorbs Actually, Doom doesn't render things in 3D, not like you're thinking of. It used a really clever bunch of math and rendering techniques like visplanes and raycasting to create the illusion of 3D space. GZDoom approaches things a little bit differently, and is technically sorta kinda 3D but not quite.

@@tothmo8659 Indeed. I have actually played The Nameless Mod several times, siding with all the various factions on different play turns, including the Llamas and the Goats. The Nameless Mod fixed perfectly the faction mechanics that were sadly broken in the Deus Ex sequel, Invisible War, namely making player's choices of alliances actually meaningful, because unlike in Invisible War, the choices in The Nameless Mod were always final, altering the storyline, the dialogue and available map areas permanently, although in the end you were still able to just murder everyone if you so chose and emerge as the sole dictator of the Forum City.
