Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 180: The Incredible Crash Dummies... or "Crash Test Dummies" if you prefer (not the 90s band). The game was published by LJN (on the NES) and was based on the cartoon, based on the public service announcements, based on the actual real-world crash test dummies that are used in car safety tests. This NES game was released in 1993 when the next gen systems were already in full swing. This game is for other systems too, like the SNES and Genesis, but The Nerd wanted to focus on the original Nintendo game by his least favorite game publisher.

Hi
Thanks man :)
Having 'Silver Surfer' on vinyl is probably the perfect midpoint between James the person and the Nerd character.
Is it an OST of NES game? How would that even work?
Krut Hawort he listens to it. It’s meant to be listened to
Even if the game leaves a lot to be desired, the soundtrack to it is legit kickass.
One Doomed Spacemarine dude Silver Surfer is unironically one of my favorite NES games. Found about it from the nerd all those years ago and I used to play the shit out of it
JtheBurger impressive 👏🙂

Fun fact: before dummies, car manufacturers used cadavers.
That would have made for some very interesting PSAs had dummies never been created.
The PSA's would've been even more cursed. Just imagine a noticeably dead person talking to you on tv about car safety...
Not to mention the toy line

Tell me about it. I used to circle all the coolest LEGO sets on toy catalogues in the hope of getting them for Christmas.
Fun Fact: Tim Follin is one the greatest vídeo game music composer, he created the music for Silver Surfer, Plok!, Solstice and other games made between the 80s and 90s.
Also hes still alive if you care about him
He also created an FMV game which is on Steam (Contradiction)
I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard a story once about how Shigeru Miyamoto couldn't believe that Plok's intro music could be made on an SNES sound chip
MW Brill Tim is well known for his technical achievements when he was making music.
I think they worked on the Wolverine Nes, and Spiderman and Xmen game on Snes.
I love the theme music of Solstice
Gotta say, that ”Crash” song parody was spot on at the end.

Some of the music from “Silver Surfer” NES game were used in one of the episodes of the “MTN Gang”.
The song at the end was priceless. The combination of AVGN and Dumb and Dumber in a fast-pace song, what a treat. Thank you Mr. Nerd!
“When would you see a crash dummy in a cannon?” I’m pretty sure the myth busters did it at some point.
Along with trying to launch said dummy into the air with a rocket propelled ming dynasty throne.

The Nerd saying he was at one point into the Dummies as much as Ninja Turtles is so fun for me. I was also big into the toys as a kid. I remember genuinely being interested in the video game (I can't quite remember if I ever actually played it) so the Nerd reviewing it is a real treat.
'When would you ever see a crash dummy inside a cannon!?'

@makano THE JAMIE'S ROCK CANNON BALL!!!
When you actually know what is under his fingers while holding the box because you too have been traumatized by LJN and can just feel their logo through solid objects.
I never had an LJN game as a kid. I was born in 92 and grew up with the SNES but no NES.
Even still, I predicted the LJN logo because I’ve seen enough AVGN episodes.
Fun fact, LJN started as a toy company. You can learn all about them in the Wrestlemania episode of 'The Toys that Made Us'.
I felt the pain...the pain of the LJN. 😥
I've only felt the secondhand trauma from the Nerd and I too knew exactly what he was gonna say... It's some aura of shit.
I didn’t know but laughed my ass off 😁😁
James Rolfe seems to genuinely have fun with his Crash Dummies toys up to this date

in a padded cell inside of an insane asylum
5:32 Holy crap, I remember I had Bull as a kid, and he was the dummy whose limbs you had to pull off manually, rather than the spring-loaded ones that eject with the button. When playing with my other action figures I'd always pretend he was the "friend of the good guys" who got slowly dismembered by the bad guy (usually Mr. Sinister), and that would motivate the good guys to eventually hunt down the bad guy at the end of my make-believe narrative. Good fricking times.
Good times indeed! I had the pickup truck that was meant for Bull. It had a spring-loaded axle that would cause a rollover accident. 😆 Crash dummies were my absolute favorite with Lego in a close 2nd.
Bull got "volunteered" for a lot of shit because of that. He's seen worse than Vietnam.
Love this story from your childhood
Vince and Larry started out as safety spokesmen, and became toys that you crash.
"You've become the very thing you swore to destroy."
I just realized, I’ve been watching this guy since I was in 4th grade. My best friend showed me one of his Bugs Bunny videos. I’m 18 now, just graduated high school and Me and my buddy still talk about the new AVGN videos every time they come out. Thanks for all the memories James.
We had the same childhood.
For real, I’ve been watching him since I was in the 3rd grade I think and now I’m 19. The earliest video I can think of watching was either the Halloween video or the Spider-Man video
I've been watching him since he was the Nintendo Nerd. That was back when I was in high school.
I'm 30.
In the whole NES game, there's no part where the dummies drive in a car that crashes?? DAMN wtf
have you forgotten that LJN made this?
That's actually one part of Crash Test Dummies that LJN didn't defile
It should've been the ending 🙂
AVGN: " When would you ever see a crash test dummy inside a f#*%ing cannon?
Me: "Mythbusters."
XD In all fairness, Buster himself was like "Why am I doing this? This isn't the endorsement deal I wanted..."
I said the same thing!! Miss that show so much :(
@Forlorn Isn't that show still on? It doesn't have Jamie but Adam is still there
Beat me to it... by 3 days.
Exactly 🎯😅!
I remember in the 90’s as a kid, having the actual crash dummy toy set.. the car actually exploded into re-attachable pieces upon impact 😂
Toy Company: "Any name ideas for the baby crash dummy?"
Marketing Consultant: "Skip the baby!!"
Toy Company: "Gotcha!"
LOL! I wouldn't be suprised if that were actually how they got the name! Though more deliberate, like the toy makers made that joke on purpose! Kinda like how in Rocko's Modern Life, when the executives told the team to create female character "with a good hook," they created a female character with a hook for a hand.
The baby was called "Skid the Kid"
God I love how much even newer episodes still reek of the 2010's. it's like an internet history time capsule
That's because the 2010s ended not too long ago, it's only been 7 months since the 2020s started. It's going to take a while before it gets to that point where it doesn't feel like the 2010s anymore.
jerel I think he means like 2011 nerd
James has been doing this for so long that he, himself, is now retro.
@@gengarzilla1685 He knows this. In the Megaman episode, while traveling back in time through AVGN history, he eventually meets up with himself from the original Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hide episode. During that encounter when they're discussing the one Megaman game which came out in either 2007 or 2008. Can't remember off hand, but anyway he says, "Woah, I'm retro".
“The 2010s” jeez. Who’s nostalgic about the TWO THOUSAND TENS
Ok that ending scene of the cartridge pieces flying everywhere was oddly satisfying.
It wouldn't be a good AVGN episode if he destroys the game after he calls it a shit load of fuck.

I have them all. I still play with them occasionally.
...i now wish i was a kid and had those toys, i KNOW ill be hooked to this kind of destructive fun >:)
How to give AVGN an aneurysm:
1. Make a game
2. Slap the LJN logo on it
Wow, this game had people “fly off to the right and explode” a whole 20 years before Ride to Hell did it. I can’t believe that.
Dude I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that!

You know whats bad? My best friend and I watched every teaser trailer for RTH leading up to its release back then. We bought the only 2 copies in our town expecting it to be like GTA but with bobbers/choppers. The disappointment kicked in 5 mins into the game(maybe less). It was supposed to be a hell-raising simulator. Check the old vids where it was like a cool barfight. We actually took a .38 to both copies the next day. I have never been that disappointed in a game. It is so bad! Their hands are big as a hog leg! Dont ever fall into the hype train.
“How can we justify buying a bunch of crash test dummy toys? What if we did a video about that game. Brilliant”
If the crash dummies game was more like, say, Golden Axe it would have been better. I see it as a hack n slash game, not a platformer.
When that LJN logo appeared, I screamed at the same time as the Nerd did! LMAO
We were lucky enough to get a AVGN episode so early too! Awesome! Thanks, James! :)
I was saying to myself before the reveal, "It's published by LJN, isn't it?" I don't remember if I screamed or not.
From 1990 to 1995, Acclaim used LJN as a extra publisher to publish more games on NES.

I was not into the Crash Dummies cartoon or toy line, and I certainly never played the video games. But I did like all the live action PSAs with Lorenzo Music and Jack Burns as the voices of Vince and Larry. Those were the days. RIP both of them.
I still remember getting a Crash Dummies car in the early 90's. Loved that present to bits! (quite literally)
I still have the car that I played with TONS as a kid. It's missing many of the pieces though, lol. Imagine that.
I hit the wall so hard the toy put a hole in it. That was the end of that toy. Lol

Man it's 2020 and AVGN is still reviewing LJN games. When are they gonna run out?
At this point, I’m convinced LJN are time travelling to retroactively create shitty games.
Yes
Shit never runs out.

LJN... LJN never changes.
"Who put a dummy in a cannon?" Humm, Mythbusters?
