As for the laundry liquid recipe - here it is:1
1 pan with 1.5litres of cold water
8ozs grated household soap
4ozs washing soda grains
4ozs Borax (optional)
Large pan with 8L of cold water.
1) Add the dry ingredients to the pan with 1.5L of water and heat gently, stirring until all the soap has melted.
2) Add the soap mix to the large pan with cold water and stir until cool. If required, add some of your favourite organic essential oil for a lovely smell.
3) Pour the soap mix into containers and fill to 2/3rds full.
4) Shake well before use and use about 2-4ozs of laundry liquid in your wash.
The Down to Earth Blog can be found here - down---to---earth.blogspot.com/ I hope you enjoy it.
We have a safe laundry bar soap in Australia that comes as 4 X125 g bars for around $A4. I grate one and a half bars, add 1 cup of washing soda $0.80 in 2L of rainwater, heat until dissolved and make up to 9L in a sealed bucket. Add 10 drops each of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil for their aroma (fresh) and anti-bacterial properties. Sometimes some lavender oil too if the whim happens. We use about 1/4 -1/3 cup per wash. Total outlay around $A5.20 for ingredients and energy so at todays rate about E3.20 for 9L. I dont use borax simply because we are off grid for water, waste water and grey water and we use it on the ornamental garden.
When the virus hit ,people here panic bought cleaning products, bare shelves in our supermarkets everywhere, we had plenty of laundry soap ingredients, plenty of soap making materials, lots of citrus and herb vinegars (home made) on hand in our stores as we bulk buy when specials happen and just went about life as usual. I also make a genuine castille liquid soap using the slow cooker so shampoos and dish soap were well covered too. Lot to be said for being genuinely green in outlook and lifestyle. Love your videos and ideas, thank you.
Just made this again. The first batch lasted us over six months. Great stuff. Easy . Thanks so much for this!
I'm so happy I found this!! I recently ran out of laundry soap (supposedly eco-friendly but I was doubtful). My husband needed his clothes washed so I boiled down one of my Aleppo soap bars (beautiful olive oil soap from my home country Syria) and added plenty of water. I didn't add essential oils thought i thought about it, but Aleppo soap is already pleasantly fragrant (I didn't add washing soda either because Aleppo soap is what i had been using anyway to remove stains, something I learned from my mother, which is how I knew it would make good laundry soap.) I decanted it into the old "eco-friendly" plastic container of my previous laundry soap and then used it and it was SO wonderful. I'm never going back to store-bought laundry soap EVER again!
Great! The Syrian soap sounds lovely!
I buy Aleppo soap whenever I find it...it has a particular smell, I personally love it 💖
Dang I'd love to try that Aleppo soap, sounds lovely
Cheers from Buenos Aires
I’m convinced. I make my own soap but now I’ll make my own laundry soap.
Good for you!
I made it! Used lavender instead of lemon myrtle (because that's what I had) and I find it's fantastic 😀 my daughter in law gave me a lovely kilner bottle and I found a beautiful shot glass that sit on my kitchen counter. The rest is in a huge tub with a lid waiting for the kilner bottle to empty. Thanxxx so much x
I love how Danu gets sassy and rolls her eyes at marketing schemes. Girl, you just got yourself a long-term subscriber. I'm looking forward to making this and your shampoo/hair rinse - don't stop doing your thing and uploading vids! Much love from Wisconsin! 💕💕
Welcome and hi Lilitu Deam Nocte!
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Thank you! Looking forward to trying out your recipes!
I am over the moon to have discovered this channel, amazing!
Thank You Terri 🙏 Perfect
I WILL be doing this!! One would naturally assume parfum is perfume - For years now I have been washing in cold water and don't use the dryer for clothes - because I find my clothes last longer and never fade in colors. I realize this can be quite a chore (hanging wet laundry) if one has a large family, but I don't now and find this method very good for keeping clothes cleaner and fresher. Stains can be soaked prior to laundering. I agree with you about words like "Green & Eco" becoming buzz words. Thankyou for this information and many blessings to you and yours! from Canada....:)
All of my washing is dried on a line. I never use a drier except the odd time during winter when we have days and days and days of rain. The old fashioned way is better for clothes and for the environment. x
Such a lovely, hassle free method. Thank you so much. I'm making my second batch after the first lasting over 10 months 😊
I am now on my second batch of laundry liquid, per your recipe. I also do my mums washing as she is 90, and both of us have very sensitive skin, which would ich like crazy until I switched to your recipe instead of the store bought. Now, our skin no longer iches, so thank you for your video. Now, all my household products are homemade. ❤
Wonderful! Delighted for you - you can never go back!😂
I have just made the laundry liquid. I halved the recipe as I didn't have a pan large enough. I'm very pleased it smells lovely. Love your videos.😂
Hi Terri I always make my own using a cup of each washing soda and bicarbonate of sofa, dissolved in boiling water lemon juice and essential oil, such as lemon, geranium or lavender. When it has cooled a little, when topped up with cold water. Makes between 2 and 4 litres depending on the concentration.
Love your blogs, blessings to you and yours.
Blessings to you too Sheila - I'll give your recipe a go too!
I make washing powder of washing soda and bicarbonate soda, but I also add Epsom salt due to hard water. I don't boil it... Maybe I should try that...
I also made liquid laundry soap of grated home made coconut oil bar soap. I found the recipe at "Elly's everyday soap making" here on youtube. I gave it o my daughter to try it.
For my hair I make shampoo bars... rinse it with tea made from dried rosemary, peppermint and hibiskus. I'm a "grey brunette" with very thin hair. Sometimes I use white vinegar mixed with water (I can't stand the smell of ACV...) as a rinse and my gets so soft!
Thank you for this. You are changing my life for the better🙏🏾♥️🫧
Deal Terry , you can also use ivy leaves for wash dark clothes . Chop the leaves and put them in water and boil ist and than drain . Trank you for the wonderful Videos . Best regards from Conny Braun and cat Felix from Germany .
Thanks for the tip. Horse Chestnut is another plant full of saponins. I will give the ivy a go. xxx
I started doing this a couple of months ago. I add some essential oils and it works very good. I’m waiting for the chestnuts because it should be even better
That soap is so eco friendly that it didn’t even bother the fly.
✨ I LOVE LEARNING FROM YOU SO VERY MUCH ✨. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM THAT YOU IMPART TO OTHERS
I will try it, thanks
Excellent information Terri i will be making this , i love your dress looks fab on you 😍
It’s the same with hand soap. I was working at a hospital when the Center for Disease Control here in the US released a study saying it’s the agitation of scrubbing your hands that gets rid of germs. The soap has little to nothing to do with it! I love your videos Terri. Thank you so much for sharing your life and knowledge. 🌹🌼🧚🏻♀️
This comment isn't accurate. Water alone may remove most but not all germs. From the CDC website:
Is it better to use warm water or cold water?
Use your preferred water temperature - cold or warm - to wash your hands. Warm and cold water remove the same number of germs from your hands. The water helps create soap lather that removes germs from your skin when you wash your hands. Water itself does not usually kill germs; to kill germs, water would need to be hot enough to scald your hands.
Thank you for the prompt, regardless😊
❤🧡💚💜 now I use 6-8 ivy leaves for in washing machine..
Thank you!!!🙏💖
You look very pretty today.Thank you for sharing,as always.
Thank you too x
WOW...this is something I definitely want to try...thank you!!! 💗💗💗
My grandmother and mother always made laundry soap at home in Spain when I was little. It was also a great way of recycling used oil. We always stored used oil, ( after frying) and whenever we got 3 litres we made the soap.
3 litres of oil
3 litres of water
1 kg of caustic sose
Gloves and glasses on, mix the caustic sose with the warm water ( 40degrees) then pour the oil slowly and stir with a stick for a while till the mix thickens, then pour in boxes/milk cartons. Important:the water mustn't be too hot or the mix might burn you.
It's the only laundry soap that was ever used in my house. After it had set, they grated it,then dissolve it in water and put it in the washing machine.
Grandma added bail leaves to the mix for a nice smell.
I'm going to try this! Prices are hideous. The most expensive bread at our local natural food store is $10.00 CDN. Of course, I make my own. 👍🌷🇨🇦😏🌱
💜Thank You For Sharing
Brilliant! :)
Ill try it, thank you.
You are empowering
Bless your heart for this. ❤️
Love this. Thanku 😊
excellent info, thank you
Thanks so much for sharing. I make my own deodorant and toothpaste so look forward to trying this out. Bright blessings from Wales
Hello Cerridwin. Thank you! I just made some deodorant today. Keeping fingers crossed I got it right xx
Great!! Very easy too. Thanks so much!!
I make my own laundry soap for my family too. I put mine in a 5 gallon bucket. I use it in powder form. I had to go to the laundry mat the other day to wash all the bedding and blankets. Spring cleaning time. I forgot my laundry soap at home and ran to the local grocery store to grab soap and it was so expensive compared to what it cost to make my own.
That's one of the reasons to make our own!
Making it soon. Thank you xxx
Thank you for the recipe. I'm in the I.S, so I'll have to find the versions of ingredients that can be found.
Your blouse/tunic is so beautiful. I love your style
Thanks!
Love these videos . Motivated to make more at home use products
This is fab, Thankyou!! X
You're welcome!
Thanks for this video today Terri - this has really made me think .. I will definitely have a go at making this laundry soap. As Lyn has said in her comment, I had recently found out about the infamous 'eco' product, so will be trying to switch to home made wherever possible from now on! Your videos are so inspiring, so please keep making them! Many blessings to you x
Thank you Willow Grove - you are very kind. Blessings to you too x
Hello from CT, USA! Very much enjoy your videos. I’ve been watching for about a year now and came across this one. Absolutely agree that many of the commercial washing soaps offered are garbage! My wife and I have been making our own for 3 or 4 years now at the encouraging of our daughter. We would never go back to buying our laundry soap!
Better to make your own on so many levels. x
Always a joy to watch and learn from you!!
Thank you Margurite!
Thanks so much Terry. Will definitely do this.
That's great! x
Hi thanks for that love to you xx
just found your videos and am so happy that i was so fortunate. thankyou so very much. i have a powder detergent that i made but it is not so great and im thrilled to make this detergent. thankyou very much God Bless
Welcome Roxana - glad to have you here watching. I hope you all find them helpful xx
Terri, this is perfect timing for me. I make a laundry powder but find it can sometimes smear dark clothes, so the liquid is ideal. I also learned that a very famous 'ecological' brand of washing powder/washing up liquid etc. has been taken over for quite some time, keeping the name but adulterating the product. A big thank you. i shall be straight on this. On another matter, I have natural grey hair like you (the photo is out of date - must change it). what do you think a good way to clean and condition grey hair in particular? I love these vlogs - so informative and useful on a practical level. I am very impressed with the Four Thieves Vinegar featured in a recent Udemy herbal course you did. it has become my go to product. Keep going. You are much appreciated and by the way the colours you are wearing today look lovely on you.
Lyn Hill Oh Yes I too would love a Natural hair care video for Grey hair...🥰
It is very disappointing isn't it when companies are taken over and the consumer doesn't know. The brand I was using has been taken over by a pharmaceutical company that has recently paid out 4b in damages!! As for my hair, i just wash it. I don't use conditioner, maybe once in a blue moon I might put a tiny spot of face oil on my palms and rub them over my head.
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Your hair is absolutely beautiful!
Can I ask what your powdered detergent recipe is? I prefer powder to liquid but might try both. Thanks!
Your amazing. I love this. Can't wait to try this. You are not alone in the annoyed factor.
Excellent video. I will try this when I have used up my other homemade soap
Thanks!
You're welcome.
Made a half batch today and it was great! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I love the Perfume fragrances of laundry detergent. My daughter-in-law made her liquid laundry detergent for several years, and her clothes just didn’t come clean. Little girls underwear....totally unclean when they came out.... discolor on clothes that are suppose to be white.. she finally said she wasn’t making anymore. Good!
It is not perfume, that smell is chemical and very damaging to health.
Me too I must have "scent" in my laundry detergent. Can I add essential oil to my laundry detergent? Lavender would be wonderful. I would love almond to.
Thank's for your contribution to humanity. You are a trur genious.
Love Ole.
Love this - thanks so much for this inspiring and empowering video Teri
You're welcome!
Thank you... brilliant
You're welcome!
Fabulous! Found you via Colette and so very glad I did. I will definitely be making this recipe , thank you so much for a super video 😊
Lovely to meet you and thanks!
Wow, I've been using this recipe I think from the same source for at least 15 years. So good to know you love it too.
How many degrees of separation!😂 I got it from a lady in Australia, from her Down to Earth blog.
I'll give it a try ! Thank you for sharing once again :) !
You're welcome!
Smashing video really enjoyed thank you 🌻🌻🐝🐝🌻🌻🐝🌻🌻🐝🌻
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Marketing seems to be a synonym for lying 😢. I have all the ingredients and will be making this shortly!
Thank you so much. What a helpful video ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Love your video, it is time to go herbal. Thank you so much.
If everyone grew herbs we could save the planet!🌎
Your channel is so lovely ❤ new sub!
Thanks for subbing, you're welcome! Hope you enjoy the channel xx
I will have a go at this. Will need a bigger pan though. Lol.

Hello Beverley and Happy Lughnasadh to you too. Blessings!
Hi Terri, Just found your channel, really like the content of natural remedies. New subscriber. Blessings from Canada, Mary
Blessings Mary!
Thank-you Terri! I appreciate everything you said about the chemical additives. I want to make this too! 🦋❕
That's great to hear! xx
Thank you Danu, thank you so much for this. I will use this recepy for sure. Heartfelt greetings to you from the Netherlands. In future will defenately make more of the recepies youshare. Thank you, beautifull you. 🖖LLAP💞🍀
Thank you Danu, as always, I love your video. Very practical and like you said, empowering. I like the way you explain things, so natural.

Thanks Ana - you are welcome x
thank you, your teaching all that i have always wanted to know, your a great teacher* thank you! your passion is the clarity i absorb and then understand...so great :) also, great filming too*
Thanks Jacqueline, glad you are enjoying the films.
Thank you Terri for this lovely and easy to make laundry liquid , I am certainly going to try this . Blessings to you and your family ❤️xxx
And to you too Melanie!
I endorse the point you make about laundry products not being necessary if you are using a washing machine especially if the clothes are not heavily soiled- try it! Same goes for dish washing machines.
I don't have one but I bet you are right! There's so much stuff we don't really need.
Thanks Terri I was using soap nuts 🥜 but found them messy. I will give this a go now xxx
I love your videos, Terry. thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom. I had switched to Seven Generation laundry detergent thinking it was better than what i had been using and to a certain extent it has been, I also went through a 'phase' of making my own detergent then got out of it for some reason. I looked at their label and although they assure their consumers that everything is biodegradable I don't like that some of what I'm reading is heavy laden with estrogen. I'm going to start doing my own again. I am headed to that webite you recommended to what else I can learn. thanks again.
beautiful!! I lately saw my laundry liquid is about to finish and I will try this !
It works a treat and you will never go back to shop bought laundry liquid.
Great video, Terri. So informative. Am just coming to the end of a box of washing powder so will give your recipe a go. Looking forward to the soap making video ☺️ Fiona X
Great! And there are some other recipes that people have posted in the comments here. Soap one will be up next.
I live in Canada and I have never seen washing soda grains, I must look for it.
They are suddenly difficult to find here in the supermarket. I will try my little local shop or hardware shop. Good luck
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Would there be another name for it?
@@peachesandsugar1 It is baking soda. I was wondering the same thing!
Just made it. How simple! Thank you! Would this work for dishwashing aswell? How to thicken it a bit?
I love this! Thank you! Again, very inspiring and informative. Have thought about doing this for a while, and now that you have shown how easy it is to do...well, I’m doing it!!! Blessings ❤️😊❤️
Go for it! Blessings to you too!
Hi Terri just thought I’d let you know I Just finished making a batch with the Marseille soap I bought, mind heck of a mess pouring into containers blame that on old age, but I’ve got loads now ready. Definitely need to check you have enough containers before starting I was struggling to find enough. Will make sure of that next time. My kitchen smells like when my Mam used an open boiler and mangle when I was very little the memory came flooding back and my hubby said the kitchen smells nice when I asked for the doors to be all opened to air it out, were open plan. So again a big thank you. No need to respond Terri just letting you know how I went.
I know what you mean about the old washing machine smell - I had a mangle in the early 80s - someone passed it on to me and it worked great!
I had an old mangle too when I was first married. I loved it, if you folded the washing carefully when putting through the mangle, it saved on the ironing, especially sheets! Brilliant. ;)
I have been making my own washing powder, but will try this liquid type. Almost identical ingredients as yours. I use Fels Naptha soap for mine.
Great video! I really appreciate all the information you give us along with the practical instructions. However, I wonder about the use of borax. In sweden, where I live, borax is considered as a reproductive inhibitor and therefor not allowed in childrens toys or things like detergent. It is even planned to be replaced as a flux in metal working. Do you have any clue on why it is viewed differently in Ireland?
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹therese from California
Washing soda granules?
Maybe another name for them here in US? Is powered laundry detergent the same?
So appreciate watching you in my times of Woe.
you are a real dear
Thk u for sharing your life, in garden and home!
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
You are a winner Therese - don't forget. The washing soda is also known as washing grains or soda grains. They are based on a salt - sodiumbicarbonate. Usually found in hardware or laundry sections. xxx
Thank you so much for sharing this Terri. I am going to try it. Where do you get your soap
Go for it! I got my soap from the health shop but you may get it in an old fashioned hardware shop. If you can't get it, use any plain household soap.
THANK YOU so much for your very excellent videos and information sharing. I am so getting into making my own products as we know that they appear to want to kill us any which way!! Seriously, thank you and I love your little cottage and your accent! peace to you! xxoo
Ha ha Bluebird - I suspect you are right about them.😅 I try to frustrate them as much as I can. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year to you xx
Another option is soap nuts, though you need to be careful to buy them from a sustainable source online, as they don't grow in Ireland.
Tried them in the past but it is a long way they have to come..
thankyou for this washing clothes liquid i have a powdered one i make
You are welcome. It's nice to ring the changes sometimes xx
Very interesting! Definitely going to try this out.
I refill my detergent bottles already, so this feels like a great next step x
Go for it! There are some other recipes that people have posted here as well. x
I have made my own bar soap for years but not my Laundry soap - I must give it a try .Thank you so much for 5he encouragement and the recipe.
You're welcome!
Can you put the recipe so I can write it down thank you
Thank You Teri...Guess what I'll be making 👐 I suffer terribly with Allergies & I've tried Eco friendly & to be honest they made the condition worse...I just want my clothes to smell fresh & clean & not be over powered by Synthetic Awful Parfum. I'm so grateful for this video & I wait with Excitement for The next hand made soap Tutorial "Thank You Again" 💚
You are so welcome. I detest the smell of the bought stuff and was very disappointed with the one I bought. Soap one will be up next.
Thanks for the recipe! I use the leftovers from my daughter's soap making business. She makes natural soap with different vegetable fats and essential oils. Have you ever tried using your homemade soaps for your laundry? For my whites I used our Portuguese blue soap dissolved in hot water which unfortunately also has synthetic compounds and then I do a second cycle with. my daughter's soap leftovers which I dissolve in hot water.
For the dark clothes I've been making a washing solution with boiled English ivy leaves and I add some sodium bicarbonate... the clothes come out smelling fresh. There are some UA-cam videos with this recipe of english Ivy soap. All the best
English Ivy leaves are great for cleaning. You could also try Soapwort, especially the roots and Horse Chestnut leaves and conkers. So much in Nature for all our needs xx
Thank you for this tutorial. I'll have to find something that is equal to the vegetable soap here in America. Thank you so much
You are very welcome. The soap I used is a solid castille/olive oil soap but you could grate any soap you are happy with.
Hi, you could try looking at websites that sell supplies for wet felters, we use this kind of soap!
Your so sweet thank you much for your knowledge amazing women's ❤ 💕 love everything you teach us thank you and blessed you 😊
Thank you Blanca💚
Very informative video. I cannot stand the smell of commercial washing detergent. I’m going to give this a try. You look very pretty by the way! Love your videos ❣️🌸
Thanks Debbie. Let me know how you get on!
I’ve just bought the soap nuts haven’t tried them yet , I wondered what you opinion was Terry on them ? I shall definitely move over to your home made soap as just so easy and cost effective etc
Love your videos I learn so much xxx
I tried them years ago Mary but when I thought of the distance they had to travel I decided using them wasn't really helping the environment - use local! Horse Chestnuts can be treated to work just as well. An English couple did a video about it. I think they roasted the HorseChestnuts first but they worked just as well xxx
I just made a batch of this laundry soap and used half quantities as I like alone. I used lemon essential oil in some and marjoram in the other.
Just waiting for the washing machine to finish the spin cycle so I can give it a sniff 🙂 I've never been so excited for the washing to be done 😂
Wonderful! xx
Thank you so much for reminding us that Mother Nature gives us all WE need.it reminds me that i used to make a very good green potion just with Ivy (hedera Helix)for washing clothes, will try it again....and it's free🙏💚🌎🌱.thank you for sharing your knowledge on herbs🤗🌻🌞💝
That sounds interesting Delphine. I have Soapwort in the garden which I could use and I know Horse Chestnut is a good natural soap - didn't know about Ivy. Thanks!
Thankyou for this, I always think detergents are bad especially these days, I am going to start my own as well, hope you are well 😊
Thank you! You too!
Hi Terri, loved your laundry soap making, I want to ask you, do you have a recipe for fabric conditioner, I try and use bicarbonate and vinegar, with a few drops of aromatherapy oils, but my washing still feels very rough and hard. :( . Thank you for all your lovely videos, love watching all your hints and tips, especially about the herbs and also the different Celtic festival celebrations you observe. Fascinating! X
Hi Wendy! so glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. I'm sorry but I don't know of a fabric conditioner, other than adding some vinegar. Best of luck!
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Thank you, Terri. Never mind I shall just have to keep on using the vinegar then, or maybe not use anything, after all our Grannie's never used fabric conditioner........ Bright Blessings to you x
