Hi everyone, I hope you've found something new to try for your own scrap projects! I still use this drum kit frequently as a gigging kit, and it's perfect for what I need it to do. I'm much more active on Instagram as @rajbakker_ so if you'd like to see what I'm up to, or ask me any questions that might be the best place. All the best! :)
If you ever need to clean hardware (any chrome parts)a really easy and cheap way to do it is use Coca Cola ( maybe part of a bottle went flat-save it). Then you can either soak small parts in it if corrosion is really bad or just use tin foil with Coke as a cleaning solution. Sort of ball up the tin foil it or shape it depending on the part your doing. It is a really awesome method for cleaning any chrome parts for anything. Car parts etc...Of course pitting remains but it will smooth out pitting to make it appear a tad better too. Hope this helps you in the future. I was happy when I found this method on UA-cam. For cymbals ketchup - apply coat and leave on for 30 min at a time and wipe. I don't clean my personal cymbals unless I wanna sell them and they have corrosion or look awful. You don't have to buy a $20 bottle of Zildjian cymbal cleaner. Just maybe use soap and water to get the vinegar smell off them afterwards.
I had a cheap kit like this and cut the shells down 2" each for a 13x9,16x14 and 22x14 kit used the off cuts as rerings, virginzed the shells, redrilled the toms for 6,8,10 lugs instead of the 5,6,6 it came with and cut some vintage bearing edges. They sound great and it cost me nearly nothing as the hardware i used was all scrap i restored that people were throwing away. I really like the way you finished your kit. it was pretty simple but came out looking really good.
I have an old Tama Rock Star kit that was given to me that has seen better days. This is exactly what i was looking to do with it. It would just be used as a great practice kit. Great job my friend!
Please try replacing the metal bass drum hoops with wood hoops ,it really improves the sound ! I did it on a cheap Mapex kit and the bass drum sound was totally different. Just a tip. Try a matt clear finish ,great work.
Daniel Reily I can attest to this as the owner and player of some very late 70's Pearl Wood Fiberglass Drums. One of the more pleasurable things that I did was to remove the dreadful wrap in preparation for the current custom Sunflower Yellow Pearlescent Glitter finish which is gorgeous!!
Hi there Daniel! I really wanted to use a high-gloss lacquer for this project and am really happy with how it turned out. Matte clear finishes were a bit more expensive! One of the harder points in NZ is that wood hoops are much more expensive to come by, so I just used the ones that came with it. I'll keep it in mind for next time!
Why do you say that if you change metal hoops for wood hoops it will improve the sound ? It has no sense for me , it isn't the same thing ? It's not just the same tension ?
@@marioalejandrozunigaguevar3469 "It has no sense for me, it isn't the same thing?" No. It isn't. Metal drum hoops on a kick drum are pingy. Wood hoops give more body to the tone. It's a simple thing but it works.
I was hoping for more finish... I would of applied at least 6 coats... love the torch look... that's some serious imagination you've got. That bass is HUGE when I saw you sitting behind it.. all the drum toms I saw at first didnt look that big. Came out awesome though.. I just stripped my mapex and dont know if I want to varnish or rewrap it...
I was limited by budget here, hence the minimal coats! hope your project has gone well! Also it's just a standard 22' drum. Low angles make it look huge!
Hi mate, Used turpentine to help remove stubborn sticky residue Mouse sander with 200 grit, then 400 grit. Burned with mix of methylated spirits, gin, whiskey Burned again with aerosol can and lighter. (don't do this. buy a proper blowtorch/burner from your local hardware store. what I did was dangerous and dumb) Used a polyurethane spray varnish to finish
Very nice job.I did the same some time ago.I found a 3 pc .bass 'floor and a rack tom in the garbage.Fix it and sold it to A music store.Just a observation... why you put a bass drum rack mount part if you were going to use a snare stand for the tom??.I guess would look better with a virgin bass drum. But other than that..good job.👍😎🇵🇷
Adrien Roy on the hoops scrunch up some tin foil and use that to scrub off the glue using white spirt or even Coca Cola to lift it off. This worked for me getting the glue off the hoops. If you’ve got glue all over the shells like I did you have to spend a lot of time sanding. If the glue is very thick use a heat gun to ease off most of it.
@@adamalexanderray thanks for the info, I do have a heat gun, it's pretty thick. Acetone did ok, but still have more to get off. I'll do the heat gun and sand paper as well. Shout out to another AR drummer
He took the wrap out of the stock hoops, cleaned them up and re-installed them. Feels like spending the money for wood bass drum hoops would defeat the purpose.
Hi Gavin, I used a high-gloss spray on varnish. It worked really well for me, you should be able to find some at your local hardware store. The one I used in the video is no longer available and I can't remember what brand it was, sorry!
Yup, that background music was on in the background AS I was taking the thing apart and putting it back together. Not much I could do to take that out while leaving in the sounds of taking the kit apart too!
Hey Wally, thanks for your comment. I thought it would be best to show visually what I'm doing as opposed to an lecture style video, I also didn't want to do any voiceover as I didn't have access to a mic. As for the TV edits sneaking in? Well that's just a personal preference. All the best for your future projects mate!
Hey mate, thabks for your comment. In the same way someone can look at a Ferrari and say it's beautiful, another can say it looks like a turd. ;) This drumkit is exactly the look I was going for and I'm pleased with the result, but I understand your viewpoint, so thanks for reminding us all about the subjective nature of aesthetic value.
Hey mate, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately the lacquer spray has been discontinued but I used marine grade spray spray varnish if that helps at all!

Hi, what did you use to seal once you burnt the kit then stained?

Nice work, especially on the hardware and the bass drum shell finish. I dig the eclectic taste in music too.
Very Talented ... So much awesome detail ...

Always wanted to do a recut on bearing edges! I'm so pleased your project turned out well for you, and thanks for your lovely comment!
Great Tunes at the end Dude!
Very cool! You took an old ugly set if drums and transformed them into a nice looking kit that is perfect for gigs and practice. Great job!

Can confirm! I've done this with a Tama rockstar kit, just be careful of taking off the wrap, they really stick them on hard on those old Tama's!
RajBakkerChannel thanks for the heads up bro!
This turned it into a very expensive looking kit. Well done!! I'm also really happy to hear you covering haiyatus kayote
Thank you! Hiatus Kaiyote are one of my favourite bands :)
Great Job!!! Kit looks great! Also liked and subscribed because of the Queens towards the end
Nice to see those Peace old style drums taking a new life!
Thanks! It was super fun and super low budget. Glad to see you enjoyed it.
I was worried when he put the hardware in the dishwasher and torched the shells but it came out pretty darn good!
An unconventional solution but it worked for this project. Thanks for your comment!
I was freaking out when the Torch came out!
good job. you made it your own. keep rocking!

When you're feeling REALLY adventurous, try cutting round over edges on the toms. Thunder!
Amazing vid amazing drumplay thx
Did the same thing with my old Century kit! A preaty nice idea to burn the wood! b
Funny how my lugs are completly diferent from yours!
Fantastic result! good job
Thanks Rudi!
awesome man, now i want to try something like this
I highly encourage you do! It's easy and if you mess it up, well hey it was only a cheap drum set right?
What if you take a tennis 🎾 and make a beater out of it for the foot pedal drill a hole on both ends. Might need a longer rod .
Wonderful project, coul you share what material you used step by step pleas?
Hi mate,
Used turpentine to help remove stubborn sticky residue
Mouse sander with 200 grit, then 400 grit.
Burned with mix of methylated spirits, gin, whiskey
Burned again with aerosol can and lighter. (don't do this. buy a proper blowtorch/burner from your local hardware store. what I did was dangerous and dumb)

Great job and great drumming. I really enjoyed this!
Thanks heaps mate!
Uno de los mejores que he visto
You just inspired me!
hello brother you use to burn the wood of the toms and the hype to achieve that effect

Thanks bud! Yup added the mount anyway because it came with the kit and was still in working order.
❤️
Very Cool.
Muito boa levada...do caralho.
Do you use a product on 3m20?
And what is the pink stuff before you burn?
Bearing edge
Show 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🇧🇷
Good job. What did you use to get the glue residue off after you peeled them? I'm having this issue myself

Hi mate, I also used mineral turpentine for the very stubborn residue. Be warned, it will warp your wood slightly!
How did you get that lovely tan color on the unburned part of the shell?
What is that purple liquid you used for the grain?
What were you using for the fire from the spray can?
👍👍👍🤝🤝🤝🤘
After all of that you install metal BD hoops?
He took the wrap out of the stock hoops, cleaned them up and re-installed them. Feels like spending the money for wood bass drum hoops would defeat the purpose.
Yup, they were the stock hoops, so didn't really want to spend any more on such a crappy kit XD
Removing adhesive from metal bass drum hoops...3 hours later.
What clear coat and stain did you use?
Hi Gavin, I used a high-gloss spray on varnish. It worked really well for me, you should be able to find some at your local hardware store. The one I used in the video is no longer available and I can't remember what brand it was, sorry!
What’s with the massive black burn marks on the top tom?
Bonzo supposed to be a rustic finish .
I fucked it up. Lol. This was my first time trying out wood burning as a technique.
It's a massive black burn mark.
CP Drums ?
DAMN, ALL THAT WORK AND THEY SOUND LIKE SHIT...... THE CYMS SOUND KOOL. THAT’S TO BAD. 😐
Good instructional video, but quite possibly the worst background 'music' ever...lol..
Yup, that background music was on in the background AS I was taking the thing apart and putting it back together. Not much I could do to take that out while leaving in the sounds of taking the kit apart too!
Hahaha this is true.
You just fucked up the drums...
Ficou feia pra caralho kkkkkkk
Your timing is off learn how to play the drums
No one is interested in the TV programs you're watching and you're not explaining what you're doing
Hey Wally, thanks for your comment. That is one ugly looking drum kit
Your mom is ugly
