THE JAMES BROWN BREAKBEAT SOUND - Restoring a Vintage Vox Drum Set

  • For a brief period in the '60s, Vox Amplifiers offered a line of drums made by the West German company, Trixon. A pair of those drum sets in Red Croco finish found their way onto the backline of the James Brown Band (along with Vox instruments and amplifiers for the other musicians), where they appeared in countless shows and recording sessions - including, most likely, the "Funky Drummer" session at King Studios in Cincinnati, where Clyde Stubblefield created one of the world's most famous breakbeats.
    In this video, I restore a vintage set of Vox drums in the same configuration (although my kit is Gold Croco rather than red) and update some important elements of the hardware to function in a modern recording studio.

    Love this! I saw the JB Revue back in those days with those kits! (Also had a Trixon metal snare myself back then. I remember the snare mechanism broke.) Thanks Dylan W!

    Ha, I decided on a whim to try a set of Hi Freqs and man they're so sensitive and you can hear every single ghost strike no matter how light. Great work on the kit and cool video!
    PS: Your voice sounds just like Tom Hanks!

    Amazing kit! I wish the Vox reissues didn't have the stupid melting bass drum, I'd probably buy one if it was round.

    How are those heads holding up? Still recommend them over the normal Texture Coated?

      Honestly, I don't see any durability issues either way - but I'm also not hitting especially hard on this particular kit. I'd stick with regular Texture Coated if that's a concern for you - they sound equally great! I switch heads around all the time, anyhow.

    Fantastic! Did you do anything to the bearing edges?

    Would you happen to know what kind of wood 🪵 was used in making these drums? Thanks again!

    Great job. What mic are you using over the bass drum?

    • @DylanWissing
      @DylanWissing  Рік тому

      That's an R84 Ribbon mic made by AEA. Great mic, and it's doing a lot of the sonic lifting on these particular mixes.

    Just get a Sonor drum key and leave on the original tension rods.

      I definitely get what you are saying, but I've just always hated those slot-head tension rods. I only have one drum left that has them (a 1920s Leedy Black Elite), and if I ever lose the one vintage Premier drum key I own that fits those rods, I'll need to sell the drum!
      After doing all that work replacing the rods and swivel nuts, I've since learned that there may be modern Pacific drum rods that fit the 60s Trixon/Vox threads. That would have saved a lot of time and trouble, had I known before...
