I kind of like the idea of a 'Cheap' Muppet movie, and that original idea with Gonzo running said cheap movie would've been pretty amusing. But even then, I'm glad we got "Muppet Christmas Carol" out of the deal, and at least Gonzo still got to take the lead by narrating the story.
As for "Muppet Treasure Island," Tim Curry was an absolute treasure (Waka Waka!) and fit in perfectly with Kermit and co. You could say he's a real muppet of a man. Also, Kermit's expression at 30:55 was priceless!
I’d honestly love to see the Cheap Muppet Movie get revived. It sounds too good of a concept for a Muppet movie to leave dead.
I could tell that as Caroll was making Big Bird sing Being Green, his heart was crumbling to pieces over the loss of Jim. I could hear it in his voice 😞🥺😭
Well, now he’s with him again in Heaven.
So true. 😢
I cried when he said “Thank you Kermit”😢
I think everyone at the service was going to pieces over Jim's death. The less said about Frank Oz, the better...
@@tysargent9647Frank Oz was his best friend.
R.I.P. both Jim Henson (1936-1990) and Richard Hunt (1951-1992) 😭😭😭😭
Jim Henson was a creative legend that we lost way too soon he really revolutionised the art of puppetry and creativity as we know today not just his work for the muppets or Sesame Street but with also other projects like fraggle rock, the dark crystal, labyrinth, the storyteller and many more it really warms my heart that Jim Hensons legacy will never be forgotten and is honestly one of my biggest inspirations of all time
SpongeBob: “Wow, gojira fan05, that was beautiful!” 🥹
Stevie Whitmire has become Jim Henson's Hero, who has helped his creation RISE to this very day?
Rest in Power Jim Henson. I hope you found your Rainbow Connection.
R.I.P Jim Henson. 😢😢😢😞😞😞😞😞
1936-1990
Now this is getting interesting
The Jim Henson story is over, but the Muppet’s story continues
Yep.
I LOVE Jerry Nelson as the Ghost of Christmas Past. He Sounds just like Santa Clause.
Ghost of Christmas Present: “HO HO HO, why thank you for the compliment!”
@@hunterolaughlin Anytime. 🎄
In 2010, shortly before the production of The Muppets really kicked into high gear, I attended a talk given by Dave Goelz, who had Gonzo with him. And I learned a lot during that, ranging from experiences behind the scenes, what it was like working with Jim, how certain bits of Gonzo's eccentric personality came to be. And what I learned most is how much Muppet Christmas Carol meant to Dave. Not even just due to Gonzo being one of the leads, or the gravatas of tackling Dickens, but because it just was needed. The passing of both Jim and Richard back to back made things extremely uncertain, but this movie showed everyone that there was a chance the Muppets could not only still exist, but thrive without them.
This is gonna be a emotional start of this.
I feel really sorry for what happened to Jim Henson since he was creative and imaginative with his works, and it’s also great that Brian was able to keep the spirit alive for the muppets
I hope he is looking down from above seeing creations still being loved. Same goes for Richard Hunt and all the other colleges that passed.
Jim Henson will indeed always be the genius that bought the birth of puppets and the laughter for the kids and adults.
Gotten a bit emotional for a moment.
After Jim’s tragic death, the Muppets would be faced with some hard times on the horizon:
• Richard Hunt would follow Jim to the grave a year later and Frank Oz would no longer work on the Muppets on a regular basis. As a result, a lot of important characters were retired for nearly a whole decade. Most notably Dr. Teeth, Janice, Floyd, Animal, Zoot, Scooter, Rowlf, Swedish Chef, Link and Strangepork.
• With the exception of two theatrical films, the Muppets would only have time for smaller projects aimed at preschoolers such as sing along videos, interstitial shorts, PC games and a fairy tale special.
• They tried to make their big comeback with Muppets Tonight, but that wasn’t really well-received for various reasons: The guest stars were flavor of the month, Clifford being the host instead of Kermit (his redesign and personality swap didn’t help either), the lack of emotional moments and the new characters hogging the spotlight at the expense of the old ones.
• Meanwhile, the Henson company managed to capture lightning in a bottle with "Dinosaurs” and "Bear in the Big Blue House", while their other shows were either screwed by the network or just didn’t make it past one short season.
Yeah I agree with all of those pointers
- Yeah, I felt like most of the stuff The Muppets did in the 90s were either hit or miss. Most productions with The Muppets and Sesame Street characters were either not great, bland and not interesting
- I’ve never been too fond of Muppets Tonight, even if it did have some funny moments, I felt like it lacked the magic and likability that The Muppet Show had. Similar to what happened with The Jim Henson Hour
- I also agree that the stronger and best Muppet productions of the 90s were the original ones that didn’t feature Kermit and the gang or Sesame Street like Dinosaurs, Bear and The Wubbulous World of Dr Seuss
- I say the best production in my opinion with The Muppets of the 90s is Muppets From Space, even though I know it’s not as well known or beloved as Muppet Christmas Carol or Muppet Treasure Island, but I like it better than them
- Same for Sesame Street, the best thing they did was The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland
Also Frank Oz wouldn’t retire from puppeteering until 2000
2:10 and 15 years later, on that same day, I was born...That's something.
Whoa, at the same time?! Jeez... that's shocking.
2:10, Thankfully, "The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson" and Teenage Mustant Ninja Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze was dedicated to him, which I will admit its pretty nice he was dedicated to those Projects.
The Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my favourite films ever and I always watch it every Christmas Eve night before I go to sleep, which has now become my own tradition
This was the part where the Muppets were at their best before Disney ruined them.
The early years under Disney were their golden years before the fall.
Rip Jim you were of the greatest puppeteers of all time. To quote Robin we will miss you.
Muppets are amazing
I remember where I was when I heard about Jim Henson's passing...I was devastated. I was thrilled to see that the Muppets rebounded after that...
Jim was a great guy and a true genius.
Love both Muppet renditions of Treasure Island and A Christmas Carol. Also it was so sad to hear about Jim Henson's unexpected passing. And Big Bird singing Being Green was a beautiful memorial
I wish he mentioned bear in the Big Blue House. It’s one of my favorite playhouse Disney shows.
I would definitely be curious to see that proposed Muppet adaptation of King Arthur made someday. That’s another way they can bring back the spirits of the Muppet as well as the spirit of both Muppet Christmas Carol and Treasure Island.
Rip Jim Henson 😔😔😭😭😭😭
14:07
And thus began the unlikely comedic duo of Gonzo & Rizzo
Fun fact: Shepperton studios was also home to “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” from 1984 to 2009.
It was only a matter of time before we got to this moment. The tragic death of Jim Henson will forever be remembered as a heartbreaking moment in Muppet history, but the fact that the Muppets have been able to carry on with future projects, like celebrate the holidays with a Christmas Carol, do their own creative takes on fairytale stories with a classic theater film (including a super awesome take on "The Elves and the Shoemaker" where they incorporated a representation of Elvis), a swash-buckling adventure with an adaptation of Treasure Island (featuring the legendary Tim Curry), and a new Muppet show (where Pepe the King Prawn makes his debut, and the Elvises come back with some funny skits) shows that they're willing to carry on Jim's legacy with these beloved characters. The fact that they've been able to carry on without Jim is astonishing, and I give them a lot of credit for doing the best they can. I especially want to thank Steve Whitmire for doing a great job in taking over as Kermit after Jim's passing. Next time, we'll see how the Muppets will take their next film out of this world, and what crazy shenanigans occur then.
On a side note, I already have Disney Emoji Blitz on my phone, and I play that game a lot. I've already gotten a lot of emojis in my collection, including Kermit and Fozzie, and it's a lot of fun. On another side note, I'm surprised that there was no mention about Rowlf the Dog becoming mute after Jim's passing, since he was another one of Jim's most famous characters who represented his personality so well. I do wish there was some mention about that, along with how Bill Barretta transitioned into the role and spoke Rowlf's first (yet brief) lines in Muppets Tonight since Jim's passing. Hopefully something like that is brought up in the next episode.
Get ready for when the madness in part 6 will start, because we will see space, The Land of Oz, getting acquired by Disney, and many more for something that they gave the Muppets cabin fever during the 2000s decade!
Who was the other one who died at time of Jim?
Just finished rewatching Defunctland’s video about the history of The Muppets
I remember these movies and they're on Disney plus.
Finally! I hope everyone brought tissues for this part! R.I.P. Jim Henson along with Sammy Davis Jr. who also died on May 16th, 1990 (plus I'm sure this is where he mentions Jim Henson's Funeral, the CBS Special the Muppets celebrate Jim Henson and Muppet Classic Theatre in this part as a reminder!)
Damn! The Grim Reaper had it out for both Jim Henson and Sammy Davis, Jr. He couldn’t resist having a double score that day.

15:15 shepperton studios?
That’s where they filmed all 12 seasons of thomas the tank engine and friends
And they did filming for the movie thomas and the magic railroad
Welp, here it is everyone. The end of an era.
Fun 🤩 Fact: Muppet Treasure Island was originally planned to be released in the spring of 1994, but the film’s final release date was February 16, 1996
It's always the most talented and influential people who pass away too soon.
Except Stan Lee. He fortunately got to live a LONG life to see how successful and more relevant his characters were to the public thanks in part to the MCU and pass away at the age of 95. He’s one of the few exceptions.
This is just speculation on my part but I strongly believe that because The Muppet Christmas Carol was dubbed in some languages (including swedish, one of the few Muppet projects that ever got a dub along with Muppets From Space and the relatively recently released Muppets Haunted Mansion, all other movies and series were simply subtitled as the original The Muppet Show wasn't dubbed but subbed and no attempts were made to dub it after the fact) and the cut song When Love Is Gone wasn't reincluded until years later and the song wasn't released in non-english speaking countries until on DIsney+, it was never dubbed (most likely to due to original voice actors and directors either have retired or passed away since, for example, the swedish voice for Ebenzer Scrooge Sven Wollter passed away in 2020 and dub director Monica Forsberg have retired sometime in the 2010's). Because of this, this MIGHT be the very reason why the compete version of the song was released sperately as a bonus feature rather than replacing the theatrical cut.
When I first watched Muppets Tonight, I thought it was a cooler take on the Muppet Show.
43:03 Foreshadowing Part 6.
Muppet Christmas Carol is STILL one of my all-time favorite Christmas Carol adaptations and my all-time favorite Muppet movie!
😎
Next time, Sony takes over the Muppet family.
And when the Muppets Twindle in the 2000s until walter came
I like to still thank Jim for everything of not just making my vjildhood but also Inspiring other to cheer up other from glooomy days or not fraid to get wacky and weird to entertain friends and vousins alike at parties. He really meant the world to me and everyone else buy Its like he still say; "someday will find It, The Rainbow Connection, the lovers, the dreamers.....and me!"
Fun 🤩 Fact: on December 18, 1991, the Walt Disney Company bought the distribution rights to the entire Jim Henson Company library 📚 up ⬆️ to that time, and they would go on to distribute Henson’s productions on video (via the Jim Henson Video label) from then until 1997. Prior to 1997, Disney released the following new Muppet productions.
Muppet Tonight lasted for 2 seasons with 22 episodes and first aired on ABC from March 8, to July 14, 1996 then on Disney Channel from September 13, 1997 to February 8, 1998
Get ready for some serious waterworks of Jim Hension's death...

Shepperton Studios in England is where the model series of Thomas & Friends was filmed (aside from Season 1 and the Magic Railroad).
Jim Henson did not create Sesame Street he contribute to it!
2:38 HE’S NOT THE CREATOR OF SESAME STREET! .. he was the creator of the Muppets on Sesame Street..I hate it when people say that!
RIP Jim Henson
Hehe. What you said about Muppet Christmas Carol being in competition against Aladdin and Home Alone 2...Funny thing is I actually saw Muppet Christmas Carol in the theaters that holiday season, and then I saw BOTH Aladdin and Home Alone 2 after the holiday season was over!
I expect the next episode to focus on two things in particular: Muppets From Space and the long-awaited acquisition from Disney.
Speaking of which, nice to see that you're sponsoring Disney this time around!
I geuss The Columbia films of the late 90s and Early 2000’s.

The Story Teller was fantastic! Too bad it got canceled.
With a thankful heart with an endless joy?
I had the original VHS release of ...Christmas Carol and genuinely would fast forward through When Love Is Gone. As a kid, I did find it a bit of a bummer. So they did have a point taking it out of the theatrical release. Still a lovely song, though..
Also in 1994 they made an album to celebrate jerry nelson’s birthday where it features all the characters from the muppet show Sesame Street and fraggle rock

30:52 Poor guys! 😂
I wonder if he will mention bear in the blue house, the other Jim Henson muppet shows from the 1990’s, and the short lived Jim Henson pictures studio.
I hope it will be for part 6. Also, while on "Bear in the Big Blue House" and Jim Henson Pictures, I thought if both "Muppets From Space" and "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland" were released at different times and performed better financially, we could have had a movie based on that preschool show you've mentioned. But, it seems that the passing of Lynne Thigpen, the voice of Luna the Moon, was the final nail in the coffin.

The Muppet Christmas Carol is a classic I never skip at Xmas!
30:49 Holding on for dear life.
It was Sony and Universal that ruined the muppets during the late 90s and early 2000s
Thankfully, the Disney buyout saved the franchise even if Bob Iger and the higher-ups have real issues behind the scenes. Will just wait and see.
For the rest of my days I will continue to ponder: why couldn’t death be cool for once and leave Jim alone for a couple of decades?
1:08, And who on earth said that making a TV Show or Movie is somewhat easy?
I remember both movies and they're on Disney plus. I love Kermit's performance in Muppet Treasure Island. RIP Jim Henson.

First, Jeffrey Katzenberg used Robin Williams’ voice and character to promote “Aladdin”, then he cut out ‘When Love Is Gone’ from “The Muppet Christmas Carol”. Man, was 1992 such a demanding year for that Disney chairman.
On the optimistic side, at least the songwriting team wrote some enjoyable numbers for “Muppet Treasure Island” than the ones in “All Dogs Go to Heaven 2”, both of which were released a month apart from each other in 1996.
Sleep heavenly with Uncle Walt, Mr. Henson. I’ll going to be as busy as you with my own craft in the entertainment industry.
Yep, unfortunately that’s Jeffrey Katzenberg for ya
Why was Jeffrey Katzenberg such an a**hole during his time at Disney
I watched the deleted song When Love Is Gone on the DVD.
Muppets Christmas Carol was my first ever time seeing the Muppets (and my SECOND Christmas Carol adaptation). So I'm ashamed to say when I saw that "In Memory Of" in the theater as a kid I asked my Dad "Who the heck is Jim Henson?"
What was your first Christmas Carol adaptation?
@@hunterolaughlin The 1971 version. It's "traditional hand-drawn animation that brings the characters to life in a realistic portrayal, though occasionally transitioning to sketchy or dream-like styles."
And still my favorite. It might have helped the voice actor Alastair Sim had actually played him back in the 1951 adaptation, and thus was actually given more input on the 1971 project (and more freedom).
But ya. The 1971 adaptation is 25 minutes, and it's (very very) fast pace kept my attention as a child and got me interested in future adaptations. As my go to it's free on UA-cam. User ID justjeff has had it up for 11 years (And I don't think it will be taking down since it's gotten 2.5 million view without a takedown....)
I heard that they found the original negatives to "When Love is Gone" not too long ago.
Great retrospective
I Really miss watching The Muppets on Nickelodeon, I wish Disney would give The Muppets back to Nickelodeon! Of course, I do Love The Muppets Christmas Carol, even if it is co-made by Disney! R.I.P. Jim Henson😭❤️📺🎶👍🏻
Well Nickelodeon never really owned The Muppets. They just bought and renewing the syndication rights for their shows. This stopped by the late 90s and early 2000s. They aired The Muppet Show, Muppet Babies, a couple episodes of The Jim Henson Hour and aired some of the specials. Nickelodeon even got an original Muppet show, The Wubbulous World of Dr Seuss. Nickelodeon got the syndication rights from Henson until early 2000s when I assume the contract was up and Nickelodeon chose not to renew it

While you can make some comparisons between DefunctLand and Animation Lookback, I personally think you do a better job.
It was inevitable this was going to start on a sad note, but… DAMN! That opening did not need to go so hard with the emotions.
Fortunately, the Muppet Crew seem to have a good footing so far post Henson’s death with successful film adaptations of British literary works like Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island and continuing the innovation and entertainment of the Muppets by including new ones like Pepe and Johnny Fiama.
Not gonna lie, I’d love to see 2 of the proposed Muppet films like “The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made” and “The Muppets King Arthur” get made.
Kermit wasn’t his alter ego, Rowlf the Dog was. The reason he played Kermit was because of the audience reaction. Not saying that he didn’t like playing Kermit, but it kept him from playing Rowlf. That’s why Rowlf was retired until the 2011 movie.
