This era of The Muppets was a mixed bag to be sure, but a major part of their history. I'll always look back fondly at _Muppets From Space_ as one of my favorite movies as a kid with some of my favorite Gonzo and Rizzo moments.
Same here.
Muppets from Space was the second Muppet movie I ever saw
Muppets from space is one of my favorite muppet movies it was part of my childhood
Me too. I still put on the soundtrack from time to time
Same. That was actually my first introduction to them.
I genuinely think the concept and lots of elements in Muppets From Space are great. It builds on "I'm Going to go Back there Someday", it gave Gonzo and Goelz their own film after a string of big roles in movies and direct to video production, and it reenforced the idea of The Muppets being this found family and how a found family can be more supportive and loving than a biological family. They had this easy puzzle to assemble, but instead they forced a bunch of other, disparate pieces into the picture and it detracted from how special it should've been. I'm glad I saw it as a kid, because I can look back on those memories fondly and just gloss over all the bits that didn't work.
It stings even more because there's no real pretence of it being a show, none of the Muppets are playing a character except for Bobo, so it could've been a really core part of the Muppet's lore.
Honestly, the best thing From Space brought us is the performers roasting it in character. I remember seeing a video ages ago of Dave Goelz and Gonzo answering questions from fans and, when someone asked Gonzo about if he saw his family recently, Dave ad-libbed "Y'know, no. I tried to get in contact with them for years, but then Frank Oz explained to me that it was just a movie...."
Honestly, the scrapped ending version of Muppets From Space would have been simultaneously heartfelt amd absolutely hilarious.
Oh boy. I forgot how much of a dark time the late 90s and early 2000s were for Kermit and the gang. But, it still needs to be talked about.
It’s Just like how looney Tunes had a dark age in the 2000’s after Looney Tunes: back in action bombed at the box office.
Fun 🤩 Facts: Muppets From Space was the last Muppet film to have involvement of not only Frank Oz but also Jerry Juhl and it was the last theatricality-released Muppet film to be produced by The Jim Henson Company before the franchise was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2004
Honestly I really love Muppets From Space and it’s sad how it did so bad and was essentially wiped from canon…I really liked how the muppets where just themselves and not characters which is rare for the franchise especially the movies….
It did set the precedent for them just playing themselves (which they hadn’t done since the first one) in the later films, which I appreciated
@@harwickbranch yeah true
I thought Space was ok
I have a soft spot for Muppets from Space, even though I wish they had kept the original ending. And Muppets Wizard of Oz is a guilty pleasure. Can't wait to see what's next.
Get ready because the miracle it's coming a new Muppet member Walter their biggest fan
@@facusmendoza1061 Trust me, I know☺
@@shelbymckinney8888yeah with the help of Walter they going to make a big comeback
Boy, was the late 1990s and early 2000s a dark time for Kermit and his friends!
First, Sony rushed and released “Muppets from Space” at a worse time, which tanked their popularity for the rest of the decade before Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck faced a similar fate with “Back in Action." And, then, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner was continuing the company’s gradual downward spiral by the time he finally bought the Muppet characters, along with their version of "Sesame Street," with failures such as "Teacher’s Pet," "Home on the Range," and "Around the World in 80 Days," as well as ending its relationship with Pixar before the 2006 acquisition.
And, I thought Jeffrey Katzenberg’s interference with Brian Henson’s “The Muppet Christmas Carol” was bad.
On a side note, if the puppeteering team was giving more time to work on “Muppets from Space” and had been released at a different time, this movie, along with “The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland," would have allowed the short-lived Jim Henson Pictures to make a “Bear in the Big Blue House” feature film. But, it seems that the passing of Lynne Thigpen, the voice of Luna the Moon, was the final nail in the coffin from ever happening.
Finally, rest in peace with Mr. Henson, Jerry Juhl, and thank you for understanding the characters we know and love.
Not to mention a parody of The Wizard of Oz with Ashanti a chain something forgettable and pathetic and as time went on people forgot of the existence of The Muppets
until the day Walter came in to gather them again to make a big comeback
Fun Fact: Both Muppets from Space and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland were the final movies to have Frank Oz involvement before he retired from doing Muppets
He forgot to mention that fact.
Too bad both films were also major failures at the box office in 99, where one was up against American Pie to The Haunting during July and the other in October had to face 3 Kings to even Drive Me Crazy!!!
@@danielgudinojuarez6729 Princess Mononoke was also released in October 1999 at America and Canada, which flopped as well.
*Muppets Theory:* Gonzo's Family is from the Planet Coosbain! Have you ever wondered what Planet Gonzo's people are from?

17:04 YES!!! I knew you’d mention _Bear in the Big Blue House_ !
That brought back so many great memories 🥰🥰🥰
“What’s that smell? It’s you!”
“It’s time for the Bear Cha Cha Cha!”
I honestly thought the scrapped ending for muppets from space could have been better than the ending in the final cut. Also, loved how the Muppet Animat mentioned the Feebles referencing to that one mention from Muppets Mayhem about most of the Feebles being in prison
Rest in Peace Jim Henson
13:55 "On February of 2020..." Oh yes, I remember when the Germans bought the Jim Henson Company just three years ago...
I was just as confused
Yeah I noticed he messed up some words. Like he said that Richard Hunt’s brother Adam did Scooter in Muppets From Space, he called him, Hunter 😂 and he should’ve said 2000 😂
The 2000s weren’t the Muppets’ best era, but it’s what introduced me to the characters.
Same over here, plus the 2000s were also a tough time for Looney tunes considering that back in action was a massive failure just like Muppets from Space
@@danielgudinojuarez6729the 2000s were just a rough time for our favorite franchises

Oh wow. Muppets in Space was my first exposure to the Muppets, and I remember watching and enjoying it a bunch growing up.
I had no idea it had such a negative reputation in the franchise.
You forgot to mention about the Muppets appearances in extreme makeover: home edition, & America’s Funniest home Videos and their website which was part of Disney’s website from 2008.
I remember watching the AFV special where they made appearances as a kid. Was very fun to see The Muppets as part of the show. Never saw the one where they appeared on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, but I remember the commercials.

I know this will rub some people the wrong way, but if I ever got to officially make a muppets comic book, I would like to expand on what they established in Muppets From Space! I would love to try world building with what Gonzo's home planet would look like, how it's society functions, and maybe even have Gonzo train in his peoples' native martial art!
And so begins the Muppet’s Sony era
It was very short lived, except that most of Jim Henson's productions (EX. Fraggle Rock and The Dark Crystal ) are owned/ under Sony wonder/ Sony Home entertainment!!

Was I the only one who that always thought that Bobo the Bear was a Full-bodied puppet costume?
I can see how you and others thought that Bobo was a full body muppet, but normal full body muppets are over 5 or 6 feet tall like Big Bird is 8 ft 2 and Bear is 7 ft
Is that Fozzie Grinch
Yep. It was a quick pop culture reference in It’s a Very Muppet Christmas Movie as a reference to the then 2 year old Ron Howard film.

Muppets from space had a very unfair release date when you look back at it I mean it came out the same weekend as The Blair Witch Project, Lake Placid, Eyes Wide Shut and The Wood and was overshadowed in an already crowded summer lineup including Tarzan, Inspector Gadget, Star Wars Episode 1:The Phantom Menace, The Mummy, Deep Blue Sea, Big Daddy, Austin Powers:The spy who shagged me, Wild Wild West, American Pie, Runaway Bride, Notting Hill and South Park:Bigger Longer and Uncut. Maybe if it had a better release date it would have possibly done better at the box office. But then again that’s just me.
Yikes, that’s a lot of movies released at the summer of 1999!
Don’t forget The Iron Giant
I completely missed the muppets wizard of Oz, and now I see why. Great series about the true GOAT's, can't wait for the next one!
I was one of the unlucky ones who saw it when it premiered. It is trash.
The 2000s was definitely the weakest time for the muppets. Especially when Muppets from space being a flop in 1999. I’m glad that their UA-cam videos gave a boost of resurgence in the 2010s, but It’s now time when 2011 comes in

Heck while it's a Sesame Street film, my favorite movie as a kid was The Adventures of Elmo In Grouchland. I even go back to it as an adult (although solely for Mandy Patinkin's performance and the song Make it Mine)
I like Muppets in Space
The adventures of Elmo in grouchland is very enjoyable, since that was the first sesame Street movie I ever seen.
I saw Muppets from Space in the theater, not the initial release, just a theater’s kids program in 2019. I don’t think the movie was that bad. I found it an okay movie.
I think it’s a shame that the movie is so bad, that it’s pretty much ignored.

Hey AniMat, I got a good idea after you are finished with your Muppets Lookback. I was thinking, since next year will mark Five years since you posted the first video of your Animation Lookback Walt Disney Animation Studios +, it would be cool if you could do a sorta follow up video for the series, where you talk about the development of the four films that were released after you finished with the series. The four films being Raya and The Last Dragon, Encanto, Strange World, and Wish.

It’s also pretty embarrassing when other films released the same year as The Muppets Wizard of Oz like Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and War of the Worlds had better CGI.
I also agree The Muppets Wizard of Oz was lost potential. Could’ve been another great film adaptation with the Muppets in the same level as their previous film adaptations of A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island and could’ve been a great way of introducing kids to the original Wizard of Oz book by L. Frank Baum for those more familiar with the more popular 1939 MGM adaptation. But they just had to put in many celebrity cameos, pop culture references, awkward adult humor and cast Ashanti in the role of Dorothy. 🤦♂️
With all the Disney remakes happening, I wish the Muppets Wizard of Oz would have a remake to be more like Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island in respecting the original source material while balancing the Muppets’ signature humor and personalities and having Robert and Kristen Anderson-Lopez write the songs and getting a talented child actress who can both sing and act to play Dorothy.
