    I noticed some people brought up the fact that Greg Centineo's son is indeed Noah Centineo, the star of the TV series The Forsters and featured in movies like To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Sony's Charlie's Angels reboot. All I'm gonna say about him is by asking you the question: Guess how daddy helped Noah become a Hollywood actor?

      Actually I was thinking about how these guys were saying that critics and the major Hollywood studios were in cahoots to make their crap movie fail. It’s like with Elizabeth Holmes blaming John Carryrou working with other diagnostic lab companies and pressuring government agencies. Scammers always have a villain in mind.

    The "unaccredited" thing deserves some extra clarification. In the United States (and many other countries), certain types of high-risk investments (like funding for films, theatrical productions, or start-up businesses) can only be undertaken by "accredited investors," meaning people or businesses who are proven to have both the knowledge to handle those investments and the net worth to withstand any (likely) losses that result. The Legends of Oz team was targeting people who didn't fully understand what they were getting into and encouraged them to sign on for something that was beyond their financial capacity, which for me is the most distasteful part of the whole business.

I eventually got curious about it. Watched/read some of the reviews the day it came to theaters and immediately called my sister and told her “look up legends of Oz, we are watching it. We have GOT to see this mess” we pirated it and the rest is history between me and my sis. We showed this train wreck to nearly everyone we know including our mom (who’s a huge oz fan) once it came to Netflix. She left the room at the 12 minute mark. • @kailyns8159
    @kailyns8159 5 років тому +125

    Shady business aside, this movie was doomed to fail. And I say that as a Wizard of Oz fanatic (books and movie and everything else).
    Roger S. Baum sold the rights to Dorothy of Oz under the impression that the final movie would be a very faithful adaptation of his book and a film that honored his great-grandfather’s legacy. In reality, the final product ripped his book apart, added a ton of non-sensical crap that was not Oz related at all, and mocked everything about Oz’s enduring legacy.
    You don’t take a beloved property like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and strip it of everything that made people love it, then turn around and expect everyone to embrace the cheap mockery you’ve created. If they had left the Dorothy of Oz story alone, this film would have had a chance among fans of the original book series and Roger S. Baum fans because Roger understood and appreciated his great-grandfather’s legacy and made sure his own story fit in with way these characters had been originally envisioned. But nope; they had to rip his story apart and ‘improve’ it by adding so much idiocy that it barely resembles the book.
    In Gillikin County, in the Land of Oz, ancient Princess Gayelette and Prince Quelala are Glinda’s parents. They are quite old, but like their daughter, they appear younger. They love to laugh and so an estimated member of their court is The Jester, their servant. As Gayelette is a sorceress, she finds herself in possession of the vanquished Wicked Witch of the West’s magic wand, which happens to have the ghost of WWW trapped inside it. In Kansas, Dorothy has been home from Oz for a few weeks and sees an omen in the sky. She finds the silver shoes and a note from Glinda to return and save her friends. Using the shoes, Dorothy and Toto find themselves in Gillikin County in Oz and meet Wiser, a talking owl who befriends them. After a mishap in Candy County and a bit of info dumping, Dorothy and co trek to the Ruby Palace to save Glinda’s parents whom are being held by the possessed Jester, whom the ghost of the WWW has taken over. Along the way, Dorothy makes new friends and rescues some old ones. And it is Dorothy who defeats The Jester by simply reminding him that his purpose is to make others happy, which gives him the strength to break the witch’s spell. Everything returns to normal, Glinda sends Dorothy home. The end.
    The Jester was poorly portrayed in the film, making him more sinister than he really was. Jester was never an outright villain in the book. That was not the point of his character. His arc was about how a moment of weakness can lead to corruption of even the happiest of souls. Yes, he used the wand to do some bad things. But he was possessed by the ghost of a true sadistic-the Wicked Witch of the West.
    The film missed another point by modernizing and complicating the Kansas story. Fake IDs in 1900? Dorothy in a denim romper and cowboy boots? Um NO. Absurd. The Kansas scenes in this film are a joke. The point of Kansas/other our world locations is to contrast the simplicity of farm life with adventures in Oz. Or, occasionally, to set up an Oz payoff. This chunk of the film is a manipulated version of the Kansas scene from Emerald City of Oz, where Dorothy and Aunt Em and Uncle Henry become permanent residents of Oz...including their beloved farm house...after a financial scare. Basically, Uncle Henry goes into deep debt trying to rebuild the farmhouse after it was destroyed by the tornado in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Unable to pay the creditors back, Henry and Em are scared that Dorothy will be taken from them if they lose the house. So Dorothy asks Ozma and Glinda if her family can just move to Oz. Her wish is granted. The film just takes the house threat part, once again completely missing the point. Dorothy’s future was the point. Being able to keep her. Losing the house meant losing their niece.
    The voice casting also hurt this film’s chances. I’m sorry to be so harsh, but Lea Michelle was the worst possible choice they could have made for Dorothy. In my opinion, she is not as good an actress as she is given credit for, and her singing voice lacks emotional connection to the material. For me, she was the worst part of Glee. And the idea of her being able to pull of a role made famous by Judy Garland is laughable. She was set up to fail and she did. Sadly, the core three voice cast wasn’t much better. Great actors in their own right, they could not embody these parts at all. Because the soul of the story was missing, the character development hardly there.
    The songs were awful. A huge blow to any musical Oz film. I honestly don’t remember a single one. Couldn’t even recall the lyrics a minute after the song ended. Utterly forgetful.
    I honestly wonder if all these bad choices were made on purpose. Did the brothers want this film to bomb? A la The Producers...
    They should be flogged with a cat’o nine tails for this mockery of an Oz film. And sent to jail for defrauding their investors and the Baum family!
    I hope Roger gets the rights back one day and hooks up with true Oz fans to make the real Dorothy of Oz.

    I've been trying to figure out for a while now why the Wizard of Oz always seems to be doomed to fail with only 1 successful movie anyone seems to give a damn about that weren't broadway shows first, and I think I finally figured out what it is: this weird tendency to turn Oz into Wonderland. Rather than focusing on elements that make Oz well Oz, they tend to focus on elements that would be better suited to Wonderland. Case in point, this is the second time I've seen a group of porcelain people in Oz despite that being an element more suited for Wonderland. Despite the talking animals and munchkins, Oz doesn't tend to really do fantastical people that much but more focus on fantastical powers and magic. For example: The famous Return to Oz rotating heads is an element from the books, since it was a series of books and this was Dorthy's second trip to Oz, but the woman herself is mostly human-ish. The candy people is also very very weird for Oz, why in the hell would Ozma (the queen/goddess of Oz) create a people made out of food?! Speaking of, why is it Ozma is never in these interpretations?! She's a very important figure, more so than the witches or even the wizard! (He's basically there for when Ozma can't rule herself) At least in the first one it's been relaid to me that Ozma was out of commission during Dorthy's first trip and that's why the wizard was involved.
    But this all detracts from my point: The reason I think Oz movies tend to fail is because of a fundamental lack of understanding of what makes Oz unique and beautiful to begin with.
