Really cool game, very talented developers. It's easy to see why it won first.
Yeah it's the level of polish on the gameplay and movement for me. I love when you find mostly legit good games(or at least honest attempts at good games) in this series. It’s fun to laugh at bad or meme filled “souls-likes” but, seeing smaller games with real inspiration behind them is nice.
I quite like this series and I'm not fussed about focusing on souls-like games. Would you ever do dumpster diving for a wider bredth of genres finding other hidden gems/trash that aren't neccesarily 3rd person fantasy action games?
@@IronPineapple I would love to see other types of games too. Just keep this series going as well. If you have time of course. Don't stretch yourself too thin as these are amazing.
Based off of something Eric Williams (Director of GOW: Ragnarok) said in an interview for the Friends Per Second Podcast, it looks like they may have gotten the spear throw/slam explosion mechanic from Blood Spear. I like to think they reached out to the team behind Blood Spear, especially since it was a student project.
The end parts of Song of Iron had me busting a gut. When you said "Why is this Star Wars" I was thinking the exact same thing at that moment. Fantastic.
I read the comment and I thought the ending music would be Star Wars, but nope, actual game became Star Wars lol. Is this commented on in the game itself? Is Thor just a Sufficiently Advanced Alien (TM)?
I just played the whole tails of iron game and I honestly loved it myself, it did felt tedious some times and I do agree that the amount of time you spend just walking is too much but I never really got bored of the combat and the game was fun overall, while the points you gave are fair and most people may think it's not worth playing just bc of them, I still recommend it.
I also really enjoyed Tails of Iron, his criticisms are certainly valid, but my guess is most people would still enjoy it. If you're on the fence, I would give it a try. It's free on PS Plus right now too.
It's not as much that I'm surprised you're not running out of souls-likes, so much as I'm surprised you're not running out of *good* souls-likes. Also, surprised you hadn't played Grime sooner. There was a ton of well deserved hype for it on release. I mean, I still haven't played it, but that's only because I don't have a PC and it hasn't released elsewhere(hopefully there's a "yet" there). I got a recommendation for you: Dandara. It's a metroidvania that's unlike any you've ever played. You can't move left or right and instead can jump from surface to surface. Not soulsy at all, but has great boss fights. The unique movement allows for some really cool puzzles as well. Nothing super complicated, though. This is still my favorite series on UA-cam.
Stadia is a pile of bullshit that I'm glad failed. It's the pinnacle of the "games as a service" nonsense that greedy AAA devs would love to implement to kill off the second hand market. It's just another half-assed project that Google execs threw money at then forgot about.
I'm in the middle of a gruelling finals week in my last year and I can't tell you how refreshing it is to be able to take a break and watch a new upload of one of my favorite series. Thank you
I like to think of myself as someone who can stand jank more than most people, but Iron Pineapple really surprises me with half the stuff you're able to play though, love these videos, one of my favorite video series on youtube
I don't know what's the best part of this series, when he finds one that's hilariously wonky or bad, or when he actually finds a hidden gem and gives it the exposure it deserves
I just finished the Kin ending here and I loved every minute of the game, and I'm absolutely doing multiple playthroughs of it. And the _music,_ just fantastic. I kinda wanna place Grime around the same level as Hollow Knight, it's a crime that this game is so little known. It also had the most consistently fun bosses I've seen in any Souls-like, every single one felt completely fair and was just _fun_ to fight, with the final boss feeling fittingly climactic.
This series is slowly becoming the highlight of your channel, just genuinely entertaining to see all the unique creations fresh in your mind. keep them coming!
That last game, while absolutely jank, I actually kinda love it's POV and perspective/presentation Feels like of there were a few more devs to edit/write the story, punch up the combat, it could really be something special
Yeah I’m trying to figure out if the developers for Blood Spear had anything to do with Santa Monica bc the animation itself it’s damn near perfectly identical
Do you know what the other game he was showing while talking about metroidvanias and grime was? Looked cool but I don’t recognize it, must’ve missed it in another video
The fact that Iron Pineapple didn't like tails of Iron just shows that some games don't resonate with everyone, and I respect that. A lot of times I come to this series to seek something new within the genre. Buuut I still encourage everyone to try it, but with a less critic mindset. I'm a fool for rats, so to me was like watching a storybook unfold, and it was kinda magical.
Yeah I hope people understand that I’m ultimately just one person with one opinion, and I appreciate a lot in Tails of Iron. I could see the right person enjoying the game a lot despite my issues with it.
To be fair, a lot of what he said was true. I agree with him despite enjoying the game myself. However, what he didnt notice is its potential. I really hope they make a sequel
I've gotta say, you've really nailed the pacing of these videos, especially the balance between live commentary and post commentary. It didn't feel like you ought to have spent more time talking about any of these or like you spent too long talking about something that didn't warrant it, and that's not an easy thing to achieve
Geralt's voice actor has been doing a some stuff with small indie devs apparently, he's working on a game called Sacred Fire too and it's pretty cool of him
gladio and glory had my litterally crying, i mean the tears are streaming down my face at 2 am from laughing so hard... seriously your videos are the best when i cant sleep dude
When a game gives you as strong of a foundation as Grime does, it's easy enough to find a few firm puns. You've just got to make sure to sift through the easy stuff and get to the real gems beneath.
Those first two games looked really cool. That student project was especially impressive; would love to see them start a Patreon for it to become a full game.
On the game's steam page they said that they aren't planning to keep working on the game for now, or even stay in the same group for that matter. So sadly, it doesn't look like that is going to happen.
Unfortunately with student games that were part of their education, those games are sometimes owned by the school itself. I knew someone years ago that was doing some game dev classes at college and he told me that nobody was doing anything overly impressive since the school would effectively own it.
The school I went to made an effort to say that we owned what we made. The other factor is that working with classmates is different than choosing who you'd want to work with long term. What works well for a semester or a school year isn't great in the long term. And if the students own it, it's hard to split off with a dedicated team if someone else wants to work on it differently.
@@3st3st77Yeah I ended up looking into it and I can understand that something like a student project would be hard to really turn into a full game considering that everybody will be going in their own direction afterwards. Still a shame though, that game looks damn good.
Tails of Iron: This is what happens when Dandelion says to Geralt "Well if you don't like my stories, you try writing one!" And he says, "Bet," and comes up with this.
The moment you realize that Blood Spear had God of War Ragnarok's Draupnir, before Draupnir was a thing in the game. I mean mechanic-wise the Blood Spear is pretty similar. Throw infinite spears at targets and smack into the ground to explode them. It does not have as much particle effects compared to Draupnir itself, but it's a cool observation when looking back to old videos like this one.
I recently finished Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. It took me about 4 hours but is a short, souls-y metroidvania, and I really enjoyed the art, music, and gameplay. Great video as always!
He's already either played and reviewed that one, iirc, or it was too "known" to call obscure (considering a big UA-camr at the time played it when it was new).
Loot River seems super interesting. It's nice that they didn't just add the moving platform thing as a mechanic just to stand out from the rest and leave it there, but actually made it a main focus, like with certain enemies being able to affect them, be it through burning them or locking them in place. I'm hoping there'll be more different enemy interactions with the platforms in the future, and hopefully more unique platforms too instead of just platforms with different shapes and/or elevations.
I'd still recommend Zeno Clash, old as it is. The art is astounding and just kind of surprising, the combat is weighty, and they built the damn thing in source engine which is incredible. The pacing is real tight, the whole experience takes 4 hours. Plus the story is solid, something I didn't expect in a game with duel fish guns, men that are part tea kettle and women that are part hookah. There's a new game in the series lined up. Can't wait. The colors in the Zeno games and how everyone looks partially melted is so good. A beautiful world of weirdos.
Recommendations: The Last Spell Is a defend the guy - rouge-like with base building, hero management and the tactical combat. Quite difficult, but very fun and rewarding Fell Seal: Arbiters mark Is also a tactics game, but with more of a story focus and more classes (almost like the job system form ff:tactics). Can be a bit grind heavy if you want "the perfect set up" so that might be minus if you are like me and spend a few more hours getting the right skills, passives, weapons, armors, ring... for the perfect one tap master, but that said the combat is fun and the story is good enough for me Solasta: Crow of the Magister Is a tactical fantasy game that has the closest thing to the 5e rule set I have played. Story is a bit linear, but the amount of things you can do in combat makes up for those shortages for me. Very fun! I play it form start to end about once every three months or when they add more classes and/or other dlcs (currently missing Paladin, Bard, Warlock, Artificer and Monk, but they seem to be aiming at adding most of them over time hopefully) Anyways hope at least one of them are to peoples liking. Loot River looked amazing, definitely wishlisting it. Also Gladio & Glory is absurdly fun for how glitchy and wonky it is, I've played like 4 hours of it now
Gladio and Glory is definitely a fun game to mess around with. I did a gameplay video for my channel, but I was laughing so much off camera all the time from all the janky mess happening.

Grime is super unique! I started it over the summer, and I agree with the comment that it gets old, but the exploration and platforming are pretty well thought out, and with the leveling system you can actually play around with different builds, like dex or strength or even magic! And the art style is so unique and beautiful that it’s honestly worth playing it for that alone

would you ever consider doing a recap vid or like a mid series summary? at this point, what do you consider to be the main qualifiers for a souls-like kind of video? or, which one of these are hardest to get right or what is the best variation on a soulslike? would love to see what you’ve learned from this series!
There’s a small indie souls like series you should check out called kingdom hearts, it’s got all the souls-like key attributes: -Dodge roll based action combat -a world filled with darkness/monsters -heavily littered with themes of humanity and light/dark -Large scale boss fights which are the highlights of the combat system -Orchestral music
I have to recommend a game that’s lengthy but is almost always on sale on Steam. The game is called Outward and it has a following and a decent community. It’s a survival, open world fantasy rpg that has a dodge roll and combat similar to the Souls games. I wouldn’t outright call it a Souls like, personally though. You can craft weapons and armor early on and cooking food is just as helpful and important as potions. I don’t want to spoil the whole experience if you do want to check it out. It’s extremely fun and there are plenty of builds to make and have fun with. Edit: Wasn’t sure to add this at first, but the game is unforgiving in the fact that you need to be stocked up on water and food. Temperatures can be the bane of your existence but with the right armor and food, it’ll make things more bearable. There’s a lot of replayability to this game and you’ll sink lots of hours into it. It has a hefty price tag but again, it’s frequently on sale on Steam if you’re okay with waiting for it.
@@dooperdooper6679 That’s awesome. I haven’t played with anyone in co-op. My main build is a gunner priestess build that I did some tweaking to. I need to find more people into it. It’s such a hidden gem.
I was so hyped by the concept and screenshots of that game and bought it week one, but I just couldn't get into it and I gave it a solid 15+ hours. The game is janky in a Gothic 2 kinda way which would be fine if the story or even the UI had any kind of polish to it at all. As it was I found the survival mechanics way too over-tuned and intrusive, the combat janky and unforgiving - making it stressful and a chore, the story and setting were sparse and full of tropes (from what I saw of it), and lastly there was some heavy discrepancy in the usefulness of various abilities. You should really make it clear in your recommendation just how important and present the survival mechanics are in the game. It's not Ark but it's beyond hardcore by any other RPG standards, and anyone who doesn't care for stuff like keeping fed/hydrated/warm is gonna have a bad time most likely. Just to add a final, even more subjective comment...... the game might frequently be on sale but I personally find the RRP to be quite cheeky given the game's production values (though I'm really not out here to stop game devs trying to make a buck). Fifty bucks for a game that frequently has text that extends beyond the window frame and has sentences that don't start with capital letters..... some rough animations and minimalist sound too...... you would most likely want to get it on sale, even if you like it.
@@graysaltine6035 That’s totally fair. I was lucky to get it on sale. It does have its flaws and it is very unforgiving if you don’t keep up with your burnt health, stamina and of course hunger, thirst and sleep. I always try to personally keep stocked up with supplies when I play. But I’d like to think that comes with the territory. I’ll definitely add to that. I wasn’t sure how much would spoil the experience and what wouldn’t. With the text issues and UI, I didn’t notice it. The game has underwent lots of changes since release. It might have changed and I know that lots of bugs have been fixed. That’s one thing the developers are quick to address.
Blood Spear, Loot River, GRIME. This episode had some solid games. Let's not forget Gladio and Glory. It genuinely looks super fun. Also, Souls of Iron is fun and engaging, beautiful and simple, well animated. Ending is funny, tho
I share the same gripes voiced by IP about this game, but I had a blast playing it (and finishing it twice, now that the free DLC is out). The consensus is that it's a great little gem of an indie, so I'd strongly encourage to try it out yourself, especially if you find the visuals charming.
I'm just dropping in to heavy recommend tails of Iron, brilliant game if you like punishing combat and "cute" story. I loved it through and through, little frustrating at times, but defo try if it appeals to you, make up your own mind :)
Based on what he said I wouldn't try it. But, that is just me. Just wanted to play devil's advocate and say that some of the negatives are things that kill experiences for me.
Tails of Iron is one of my favorite games ever and I'm beyond disappointed he didn't like it but I thought it was amazing. Maybe they added in fast travel by when I got to it because I don't remember being annoyed with backtracking.
Secret of Grindea is a great game, I would sumurize it as a action-heavy 2D Zelda with extra emphasis on skills customization and Souls-Like elements like the overall difficulty, (stami)mana management, estus flask.... It has been in slow development for some years but with consistent updates, it's quite close to finally get out of Early Access now ; there is a lot to love in it with both an Adventure mode, and an arcade mode that is basically a Rouge-like with the mechanics of the Adventure mode. It's great, and also fully multiplayer-compatible. Oh and you can have a cute pet cabbage
I gotta be one of the 7 people that genuienly want Plushie from the Sky to be exactly as it is, just longer. That demo was so charming and so dumb in the best ways possible that I immediatelyf3ll in love with it. I especially loved the 4th wall break for stubborn players. I am going to go look up the game right now to see what else there is.
Can’t believe you haven’t played Iji yet. A metroidvania, It’s lore is diluted and sometimes hidden, you kill and find souls to upgrade your stats plus save your game in a bonfire style thing, tough but fair, great bosses and a fairly interesting storyline. It’s from 2008 and it’s free
"It's lore is diluted and sometimes hidden" I beg to differ, the game doesn't exactly hide the entry logs and you can find them with relative ease. And it's not much of a Metroidvania, seeing as you play through linear stages with no option of backtracking. It's also not souls, it's nanites from what I recall. There's also *no* visible bonfire, it's just a terminal.
If you like the 2D metrovania with challenge and fight telegraphing of dark souls, You should check out Dust: An Elysian Tale. The combat is surprisingly deep and the gameplay is stellar for only 2 bucks. Just don't let the furry stuff scare you away. This is definitely better than that Neopets game.
@@CerealKiller While Dark Souls doesn't have the usual progression seen in Metroidvanias (ability/item based backtracking progression) I think comparisons can be made to the interconnected world design which is basically 3D Metroidvania, complete with fake walls and the like. This is in comparison to games like Zelda where you have a hub world with branching paths that have little or no interconnectivity, we can see this difference in Dark Souls 2 which has been called the Black Sheep of the series. It's certainly not more of a Rogue-Like as you have suggested since character stat progression and obtained items are not lost after death and checkpoints exist. I agree that Soulsvania has become its own distinct thing, I think many people already acknowledge that.
People keep thinking I'm gonna run out of souls-likes, but I can guarantee you that I'll run out of energy for these long before I run out of games to play

i really dig multilayered comedy like that
It was good for the first two, then it started rolling downhill.
They were funny I just started taking them for granite.

@@Eternal_Games1 Trueeee. I forgot about that.

Zeno Clash is a wild ride, very unique game. would recommend it too for sure

Fell Seal: Arbiters mark
Is also a tactics game, but with more of a story focus and more classes (almost like the job system form ff:tactics). Can be a bit grind heavy if you want "the perfect set up" so that might be minus if you are like me and spend a few more hours getting the right skills, passives, weapons, armors, ring... for the perfect one tap master, but that said the combat is fun and the story is good enough for me
Solasta: Crow of the Magister
Is a tactical fantasy game that has the closest thing to the 5e rule set I have played. Story is a bit linear, but the amount of things you can do in combat makes up for those shortages for me. Very fun! I play it form start to end about once every three months or when they add more classes and/or other dlcs (currently missing Paladin, Bard, Warlock, Artificer and Monk, but they seem to be aiming at adding most of them over time hopefully)

I loved playing that game with my friend. He was the tanky warrior while I played a spellsword type of character.

"It's lore is diluted and sometimes hidden"
I beg to differ, the game doesn't exactly hide the entry logs and you can find them with relative ease.
And it's not much of a Metroidvania, seeing as you play through linear stages with no option of backtracking.
It's also not souls, it's nanites from what I recall.
There's also *no* visible bonfire, it's just a terminal.
Iji aint a metroidvania. Metroidvanias arent separated by linear levels. It’s just a platformer with the gimmick that you can go pacifist.
I love Iji's soundtrack
If you like the 2D metrovania with challenge and fight telegraphing of dark souls, You should check out Dust: An Elysian Tale. The combat is surprisingly deep and the gameplay is stellar for only 2 bucks. Just don't let the furry stuff scare you away. This is definitely better than that Neopets game.
Good game, definitely not niche enough for this series.
That first game Blood Spear really predated the detonating spear from god of war ragnarok
I feel that the Metroidvania and Soulslike genres combine rather well. I love Hollow Knight, Blasphemous and Salt and Sanctuary - such great games!
People don’t talk about it much but dark souls is a metroidvania crossed with a 2nd edition dnd game
It's almost like dark souls is a metroidvania...
Try Ender Lilies
Hell yeah! More love for Blasphemous!
