wasn't there another similar game way back when that was also a furry movement combat game? edit: lugaru. you are welcome it released as Overgrowth in 2017, apparently not anywhere near what they had promised. I'm not sure how similar they are but furries tend to make good things when they can put ass in it
For me the most egrigious aspect of it is the ui in a lot of cases just being exactly like HK. Like a lot of other things are very gente staple (though the environment designs also look just like hks style) but a lot of ui things just feel like they just went with hollow knights ui and it kinda detracts from it imo

I always have a soft spot for games with underwhelming/jank combat, but a compelling story or endearing cast that makes the experience feel worth it despite the shortcomings. Like the game might not feel good to play, but it can still leave an impression.

Lies of penguin legitimately looks like one of the most fun games to play for the hell of it. Not good, not horrible, but just what you need when you want to have some dumb fun with friends.
Dark Messiah ruined first-person action games for me. Any time after, when I was playing Skyrim or similar games, I just couldn't deal with the fact that they didn't just straight-up copy Dark Messiah, thereby improving the combat a thousandfold
I'm ancient so I played Dark Messiah when it came out, and replayed it, and replayed it, and replayed it... it was so unique at the time and it's crazy how it wasn't just copied more
That game is amazing , and i cant understand how noone ever tried to use combat mechanics in other melee gamese , apart from dishonored, but dishonored have focus on stealth
I put 85 hours into Dysmantle, it's a great game to listen to music and progress through. Also has a pretty great story that slowly reveals itself to you. I accidentally spoiled the main reveal of the story while looking up a hint to a secret I had already found. That really upset me but it was my own damn fault. once you get a high-level weapon destroying an entire town is a lot of fun. I enjoyed the 2 DLC, my only complaint is that throughout the entire game, you see these flowers and can't interact with them until you do one of the DLCs (I did that one last on accident). But I do agree that it isn't a high-stress game but I highly enjoyed the experience.
i like how i can tell pseudoregalia was a game jam game just because of how insanely polished the movement specifically is, you can tell they made all those systems first then built the rest of the game around it. its kinda fun being able to connect the dots like that

I want to quickly come in here and say that I took the risk and bought Stray Blade and I believe it is very much worth it now, they fixed almost every bug, it runs very smooth on PS5, they overhauled the old color coded combat and now it feels like proper souls combat, it had a lot of charm and love put into it, and I personally feel like it deserves more attention, if anyone here is a fan of those similar games such as Kingdoms of Amalur or Asterigos plus Souls it’s a must buy in my eyes.
Same. I'd probably even put up with the combat. I like reacting, though it will get stale if you can't do anything else. Those boss bugs were pretty problematic, though. Seeing them refusing to attack the player was discouraging. But if they've kept working on the game, there's hope.

I wanna play Pseudoregalia!!!! I love 3D platformers where you can bounce around like that, and the MC has a lot of character in her movements (like the healing animation)
Yeah, Pseudoregalia is more of a metroidvania than souls-like. Lots of plataforms and movement skills. But it’s super charming. And Ayooo, that bunny 🐰
Just want to say, I really love how every video in this series has a different opening animation in the background for the intro. It’s a small touch but when it would’ve been so much easier to just keep the same one it really adds just that little bit extra to why I love your videos so much!
The game that basically makes you buy pay to win DLC to beat the it on easy but you're not even mad because it's 1$ and you knew what you were getting yourself into from the Steam page. 🐧🐧🐧
That penguin game is so fucking epic dude. I kinda wanna buy the god bat just to support the dev. It looks a little janky for me personally but it is just dumb fun and is goofy as fuck. That's the kinda shit I like.
By the way you are an AMAZING reviewer of video games. You point out actually good criticism that devs should be aware of with certain game mechanics and just basic level designing tips. So props to that

I am so goddamn glad that Pseudoregalia was in this one, I've been following the development for about a year or so now and I am SO glad it's getting some recognition
I picked up Pseudoregalia a couple weeks ago on a whim and was just so surprised at how good it was. The MOVEMENT, holy shit. Seeing someone play it doesn't do the fluid, responsive movement mechanics justice. It just feels so satisfying to chain together different moves and skills in an attempt to sequence break, and then get rewarded for doing so. The dev is seriously talented, and I'm excited to see what they do next. Also, what a great ass.
still not a good mechanic imo. If the intention is to not let you bruteforce chests while ignoring enemies then there are better options than to force you to do a qte everytime, especially when there aren't even any enemies around. Enable enemies to stun you to out of the animation, lock chests behind a "enemy kill counter". Make the player unable to interact with chests if there are enemies around. Now it's just going to be annoying you have to perform that QTE everytime, especially on subsequent playthroughs or speedruns.
@@brent8407 > Let enemies stun you out of the animation. They can already attack you during the animation, if there are too many around then killing you effectively stops the animation. >Lock chests behind an enemy kill counter Unbelievably lame. One of the worst ways to implement a system to prevent players from cheesing early treasures by not interacting with the game's systems. >Make the player unable to interact with chests if there are enemies around. They can already attack you if they are around, if there are too many around then killing you effectively stops you from interacting with the chest. I was going to say that a good solution would be to not have the timing check on chests when there are no enemies nearby, but that would leave players unprepared for the check when they DO encounter enemies. My modified solution would be a 'hack' method/combination that will instantly open the chest when the player inputs it as a knowledge unlock, but players aren't given this information until extremely late into the game. This way any replays or challenge runs can avoid the delay of the QTE, but new players won't be able to cheese the game unless they are looking up info online, in which case they are already committed to cheesing themselves.
I love how Pine can show me a review where he concludes the game isn't for him, but still manage to sell me personally on the game, without letting ego or the need for his audience to agree with him on everything get in the way. I was a professional games critic for years, and Iron Pineapple is the kind of gaming content creator we need more of then and now.
Lies of Penguin just goes to show how deep the rabbit hole can go; it feels like a project made by someone with massive vision with no engine experience who just did their best. Big ups
ye was just about to comment that, from enemy art/animation & the environment, even the player attacks look identical.. it's missing its own identity( gameplay-wise)
@@j11mz16 gameplay-wise there are differences though. The combat in the demo is different from HK due to how enemies behave and in the demo you don't even get access to other skills besides basic down thrust, and from trailers there were plenty of cool ones, and more importantly no guns, which seem integral to gameplay
@@Grizzly7155 False Knight? Brooding Mawlek? I don't know what bouncing beetle you're talking about but it's different from both of them. The rocks falling from ceiling is the same between False Knight and the Crowsworn boss, but other than that the attacks are different. False Knight doesn't spawn flying adds, and his tantrum attack works differently + it's part of the falling rocks attack, not separate

Stray Blade at least did their homework on the medieval combat, the choreography is excellent! the way one of the enemies exevuted you whil holding the blade and use the hilt as a improvised axe was pretty metal.
I literally jumped up and shouted when Pengi came to assist at the end, holy moly that was epic! Thank you for introducing us to Life of Penguin 2 - a cinematic masterpiece

It makes it really easy to see where I could improve my own games from the start! Thank you so much for your breakdowns of why games feel good or not as much to you!
Probably someone else's video to make. But if Armored Core gets enough of a reaction out of people, we might start getting a bunch of cool mech fight games again, instead of strategy or more methodical mech games. God Custom Robo or Little Battlers Experience, even Medabots here in the west (and with polished action combat), getting a new lease on life with a decent budget would be great.
Dysmantle is definitely that podcast game. Can't even imagine playing it without something else playing on a second screen to stimulate the rest of the brain. But at the same time, once you've played it, you can now can't imagine watching those long videos without playing something like it.

Man what an awesome little gem Pseudoregalia is. I'm so happy you featured it. The movement is so addicting!
Yeah I actually skipped most of that segment because I was like "wait this looks great, I'd rather play this before watching any more of it"
Same lol

Now do the same with lies of penguin
wasn't there another similar game way back when that was also a furry movement combat game?
edit: lugaru. you are welcome
it released as Overgrowth in 2017, apparently not anywhere near what they had promised.
I'm not sure how similar they are but furries tend to make good things when they can put ass in it
Lies of Penguin deserves multiple adaptations

@@oldcowbbno the low quality shitpost quality is what makes it so good
Crowsworn looks so high effort and I love the aesthetic but I do wish they tried harder to stand apart from Hollow Knight
I mean, the Nose boss felt almost like a direct copy of False Knight. Jumping attacks, sweep attacks, stones from the ceiling...
It really just looks like a modded slighted reskinned hollow knight, uncanny like he says haha
For me the most egrigious aspect of it is the ui in a lot of cases just being exactly like HK. Like a lot of other things are very gente staple (though the environment designs also look just like hks style) but a lot of ui things just feel like they just went with hollow knights ui and it kinda detracts from it imo
@@joaofilipesilva5887 the rock throwing boss is literally dung beetle. This is straight up a copy of HK. And it doesn't even look like one of those cheap knock offs you see on mobile or anything. It looks like a perfect copy, a model changed modded Hollow Knight. I wonder if Team Cherry has commented on this game...
edit: apparently the devs are quite close and Team Cherry has shown its support.

I love how much _character_ Stray Blade had. Like even if the game itself is a bit jank with the combat and some of the bugs and AI, the characters and animations and voice acting are super fun.
That's immediately what I thought too. I thought the animations and voice acting were superb, props to the people working on those. It's a shame the gameplay part isn't as good
The image of Boji dragging the MC's dead body is so fun, and I really like his design.
I really hope the devs stick with it a bit longer to refine the rest of the package, it has a lot of heart imo.
Boji being voiced by Beast from Divinity: Original Sin 2 certainly helps as well!
I always have a soft spot for games with underwhelming/jank combat, but a compelling story or endearing cast that makes the experience feel worth it despite the shortcomings. Like the game might not feel good to play, but it can still leave an impression.
@@ajeje1996 Agreed! Gives me some huge Jack and Daxter vibes, too
The boss fights in that penguin game are something else dude. I genuinely lost it when the Pengi: The Blue Flame started doing psycho crushers.
One of my core Dark Souls 1 memories are the stupid skeletons that try to psycho crusher you and then fall apart upon landing.
This series has introduced me to so many diverse and unique games, even some of the parody games look fun if you're looking for a short experience. Thank you Pineapple for spotlighting these games.
Legit. I bought Lunacid after watching Pine’s episode featuring it and had the BEST time. Regularly checking my Steam library for updates on it now 😂

Lies of penguin seems actually amazing. I really want to see them make a real higher budget full game. Also you should try the penguin game 1
I learned about Psuedoregalia because the dev added an option to make the character wear pants because she could be too "distracting".
No pants plz
too many furries smh
Lmaoo real. That chara design was just hella horny for no reason (tho it is a cute fit)
When Pengi come to help the Hero of Antarctic i legitimately lost my breath, omg, why is this game so epic and why am i so invested
💯
Love how "God damn" is the first reaction he had. The exact same thing probably happened when people first played Nier Automata
Lies of Penguin unironically had me at the edge of my seat.
yo real shit that ending was hype fr
That ending !!!!
I worked on a game in the same jam as Pseudoregalia, that game completely blew every one out of water
I agree that one to two second-look games per episode is probably the right balance, depending on how many big new things hit in the time period. This was a really good look and I am quite excited by Kristala in specific!
Lies of penguin actually had me invested towards the end can’t wait for 3
Crowsworn's cut scenes and death animation is so good, I can't wait to play thr full game
Lies of penguin legitimately looks like one of the most fun games to play for the hell of it. Not good, not horrible, but just what you need when you want to have some dumb fun with friends.
Always so excited when somebody mentions Dark Messiah. It's is a shame there aren't more games like it
So good, I discovered it on a stream... Even now it's a great game to discover
Dark Messiah ruined first-person action games for me. Any time after, when I was playing Skyrim or similar games, I just couldn't deal with the fact that they didn't just straight-up copy Dark Messiah, thereby improving the combat a thousandfold
I'm ancient so I played Dark Messiah when it came out, and replayed it, and replayed it, and replayed it... it was so unique at the time and it's crazy how it wasn't just copied more
Game of my childhood
But I do agree that it isn't a high-stress game but I highly enjoyed the experience.
i like how i can tell pseudoregalia was a game jam game just because of how insanely polished the movement specifically is, you can tell they made all those systems first then built the rest of the game around it. its kinda fun being able to connect the dots like that
Okay, Psuedoregalia looks like a game that would have amazing to watch speed runs. All that movement tech in the hands of a top tier speedrunner. I really hope the game garners more attention because that movement looks sick af.

The Pengi assist had no reason to be that hype! . Wow, the animation on Crowsworn is CLEAN.

I honestly think Stray Blade has a lot of potential. Good luck to the devs. I’d definitely play with some updates
Same. I'd probably even put up with the combat. I like reacting, though it will get stale if you can't do anything else. Those boss bugs were pretty problematic, though. Seeing them refusing to attack the player was discouraging. But if they've kept working on the game, there's hope.
This has become such an impressive & important series. I imagine it's the sort of thing that unintentionally blew up on you. One of those magical ideas that wound up working out beyond your wildest dreams. Just want to say that it wouldn't be the same without you. If anyone else were doing it, a lot would be missing. Thank you.
These videos are something I look forward to constantly.

I fell head first into Dysmantle and remember going so far and being totally absorbed by the big open world with so many resources. It’s hella fun lmao
I am so goddamn glad that Pseudoregalia was in this one, I've been following the development for about a year or so now and I am SO glad it's getting some recognition
??? it was only in development for six months though?
I picked up Pseudoregalia a couple weeks ago on a whim and was just so surprised at how good it was. The MOVEMENT, holy shit. Seeing someone play it doesn't do the fluid, responsive movement mechanics justice. It just feels so satisfying to chain together different moves and skills in an attempt to sequence break, and then get rewarded for doing so. The dev is seriously talented, and I'm excited to see what they do next.
Also, what a great ass.
I absolutely love how the confusing QTE Chest in Crowsworn is brought immediate clarity in one brief "Oh!" moment, right before guaranteed death.
still not a good mechanic imo.
>Lock chests behind an enemy kill counter
Unbelievably lame.
Big ups
just creative genius. I wish i had a fun idea like that to make a game
Crowsworn looks like its going to be fantastic, i just cant get over how uncanny it is to HK
ye was just about to comment that, from enemy art/animation & the environment, even the player attacks look identical.. it's missing its own identity( gameplay-wise)
Yeah that whole game is s copy of HK
That beyblade boss is even the same, that the bouncing beetle it even has the same move set except for the spin
Lies of Penguin truly shows that shitposting is a legitimate artform.
It does have a Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective sort of quality to it.
It reminds me of that Jimmy neutron pizza shitpost from years back, the way they just drag their feet when they walk like they are being pulled
High-effort shitposting is the most authentic form of content.
Stray Blade seems really charming! I hope it gets a remake or an overhaul update someday.
If Lies of Penguin get a big budget remake I would be down for that. It gives me the same vibes as stuff like Lollipop Chainsaw.
Stray Blade looks so good! Great job artists and designers. Animations and voice acting as well. I wouldn't even mind a toy Boji in my place.
For Lies of Penguin, you can actually beat or rematch the teacher penguin and get his weapon that allows you to do a spin attack.
I'd definitely be interested in a "revisited" block or even dedicated episode for demos/previews you've played, and then compare them to their full release
I hope Pseudoregalia gets expanded upon. It looks like with more time and some more polish, the game could be fantastic. What is already there has a high level of polish for a Game Jam title.

I can't wait for the "I played 10 Core-likes you've never heard of" video
Probably someone else's video to make. But if Armored Core gets enough of a reaction out of people, we might start getting a bunch of cool mech fight games again, instead of strategy or more methodical mech games.
God Custom Robo or Little Battlers Experience, even Medabots here in the west (and with polished action combat), getting a new lease on life with a decent budget would be great.
