Something interesting I noticed about source of madness: generally speaking, most modern interpretations of Lovecraftian monsters are fairly tame. You really shouldn't be able to make any sense of the monsters you see. Maybe not great for gameplay but I absolutely love the interpretation.
To be fair, Lovecraft's idea of incomprehensible horror was often "it looks like a cross between a filthy non-white and an animal." Sometimes he got real weird like "a color the brain can't process" or "made of something other than matter" or something, but the man himself thought a squid head, iguana body, and tiny wings would make Cthulhu scary. Give modern writers and artists some credit for actually going above and beyond what Lovecraft ever put to print.

I immediately realized what source of madness was doing with using AI to generate nonsensical imagery to invoke a Lovecraftian vibe and I've gotta say, that is very clever. I REALLY like that idea.
Reminded me very much of the Shoggoths, cause they're as well just a big formless mass that shifts and grows into many different forms just constantly, often without any clear purpose or direction. Fits very well with the AI generation.
yeah but...no. Its just ugly, and not even the good ugly you see in a well-designed cosmic horror. Its a bunch of pixels mindlessly thrown together with data stolen from other artist's works.
@@SissypheanCatboy It's not necessarily other artist's work it's pulled from, depending on how the AI compiles the image. Don't get me wrong, I do _not_ like the idea of AI art robbing artists of jobs in the way we've been seeing done by larger corporations and scrupulous programmers. But there are artists who have legitimate uses for AI in their works and that don't infringe on the work of other artists, and the libraries used in such works don't necessarily come from publicly available (stolen) artwork. So I'd just encourage keeping an open mind even if it says AI-assisted, though I admit I also don't really know what kind of sources were used in SoM's case. I'd hope 'AI-assisted' reflect them using AI and images of their own or licensed work. But hey, if they did actually steal and/or if you just find it ugly anyway, more power to you/fuck 'em.
By the way, the Source of madness really can be called Lovecraftian. Its visuals do hurt you eyes and brain but in a good way. In the same way Lovecraft described his creations and world. Maybe inhuman AI work is the key to create real Lovecraftian experience.
Yea, the common interpretation is just something alien with a bunch of tentacles (this can still work, see Bloodborne), but Lovecraftian old ones were meant to be so weird that you couldn't even make heads or tails of what was going on. He did describe some of his creatures in detail, but they were usually the "lesser," beings like the starfish guys in At the Mountains of Madness
I knew of the addition of Gilbert already, but I hadn't realized who exactly he's supposed to be relative to the original game. Really tragic, but also such a cool and meaningful nod to that quest. The visual storytelling is on-point as well, with how he clearly made an effort to restrain himself before turning completely, and that he drops you if you get caught in a grab.
Theoretically, it would be incredible if, in the hypothetical situation of BBPSX covering the full game, when the game starts showing its cosmic side, the truly alien Great Ones and the like were rendered in modern photorealism, to make them feel tangibly not of this world, like they’re bleeding into the incorrect reality so much that even their graphics struggle to render. I think that would be a really cool way to use the demake idea to service the game and its themes, not just as a (very skilled) coat of paint.
1:10 that statement bugged me enough to write this comment; the PlayStation did get duel stick support with the introduction of the Dualshock controller (as well as vibration support, I think as I don’t feel like going to the wiki or finding my controllers.) A potential update to the game that would be nice is a setting in controls for “analog” and “digital” to be able to switch to either one, with a “both” option being a nice addition as well
I actually really like the idea of the Gilbert Fight in Bloodborne PSX. Like that's just such a cool thing to do different from the game and it really shows how much the developer(s) care about the Bloodborne.
Love how often people go to 'non Euclidean' as a descriptor for Lovecraftian aesthetic when all that shit means is 'curved surfaces'. Really spooky, man, ovals and tentacles, aaaah I'm losing my mind over here this is truly the stuff of nightmares
Giving actual feedback in important areas based on your real experience is such a nice change of wind. You can see what might be wrong but you don't flame these developers, instead offer creative opinions that can help excel these games in development through third party commentary. I've watched all of these souls like videos and you definitely grow as each video is released and I will definitely continue to watch
Source of Madness seems like a really cool idea that then no one actually _designed_ all the way to the end, just stopping at and going with the unrefined cool idea.
Thanks for checking out the Beta for Achilles: Legends Untold ⚔️ 🙏! Your honest notes and feedback are invaluable and really appreciated! Our team is already working on improving the core gameplay based on feedback from the community, and we have a lot of cool things planned for the Early Access release version of the game. Hope we can win you over then :)!
I think it looks great, but gameplay will be the biggest thing to work on, along with enemy variety. I love companies who take constructive criticism, so you are already scoring a few points.
14:10 Achilles killing Hector is supposed to be the Good Ending for the Trojan War. Hector's body vanishing as soon as he is killed removes the scene where Priam pleads with Achilles to stop defiling Hector's corpse by dragging it along behind his horses near the city walls so that he can be given a proper burial. Maybe it would have fit a Souls-Like more if Hector would rise as a mighty undead warrior if the plea is ignored.
That moment when you heard the song in the sewers and went "wait, I know this" is the content I live for. Moments like that in games are things that can never be recaptured, and I'm so glad you were recording
Honestly, Hardland has one of the most charming art directions I've ever seen, I hope we get to see that expanded and improved upon, it reminds me a fair bit of The Hobbit for the Xbox. 🙂
Even though Hardland was a pretty empty game from what you could tell, I can not get over how gorgeous that art style is. While it may not have been that good to play, it does indeed look incredible
it definitely has vibes of being a game made by a passionate team or person but its their first project. they definitely show the skill to make a lovely world and idea but they still need to do all the more tedious and small things a game needs to be more enjoyable now days. id be really interested to see where they go with it or just in the future
Developers focus on adding a roll mechanic to games and making it look good, but dark souls also nails level design super hard and people ignore that with these clones.
I bought Death's Door and Eastern Exorcist on your recommendation. Thank you. I've been enjoying Death's Door a ton. I actually have an interest in a lot of these games you feature even some that you may have have as high an opinion on. This series has introduced me to a lot of great games that I never would have found otherwise. So glad you are still making it. Just finished Death's Door and enjoyed every minute of it.
Hello Iron Pineapple. I recently watched your Souls-like Part 11 video in which you played Enchain. If you were looking for other shooters with a Souls-vibe, there is a game that I think needs way more attention. It's called Northern Journey on Steam. It's based on Norwegian myth and there's no guns, but crossbows and throwing axes. It's not Souls-like in the way of dying and losing resources, but in the level design, atmosphere and exploration. I hope you check it out, I wish more people would see this game and talk about it. It's one of the best indie games I played last year and it seems to be so unknown at the moment.
Achilles even thinking of sparing Hector is really strange. In the Illiad, 12 days of desecrating the body for killing his lover Pátroklos was described, sparing seems really out of character.
It makes Achilles' grief arc less in depth. Achilles' blind anger, and sacrilegious vengence upon Patroklos's corpse, not leading to the hero's grief subsiding, and it only being mutual forgiveness (or at least mutual recognition of each-other's pain and sorrow) with his enemy (Priam - Hector's father), is what makes the arc really bitchin'. Otherwise it'd just be a (throughly unwise) Chad power fantasy - and that shit is Heracles' domain, not Achilles'.
@@CatWithAHat2HD that doesn't fit at all with what this comment is about you're just trying to look cool by narrating something you study in middle school, also no it is also about the "greatest fighter of Troy" fighting against the "greatest fighter of the Greek" after he killed patroclus thinking it was Achilles when he saw him killing another trojan warrior (still a hero just a lesser one whose name I forgot), so no the arc is also about the clash of the élite of the 2 sides, so much that it's even asked for menelaus to stand back
@@CatWithAHat2HD but again, doesn't suit the comment at all, it just doesn't make sense to spare Hector when Achilles tied his TENDONS to a damn chariot and ran around the city for 3 times before stopping
@@ElmoWill wtf are you on about? He's agreeing with the comment, it's offered as a choice but being able to spare Hector really dilutes the point of Achilles's grief not being sated by revenge no matter how far he went in enacting it.

I just need to say that every time I see a new video from this series, it makes me happy. Your openness is so refreshing. You could be a jerk when reviewing these games, but you're really not. Even when the game is bad, you try to be positive and encouraging when you can, and that's really cool.

It's what makes your videos so enjoyable. You deserve wayyy more subscribers man! Also you hands down have one of the best if not the greatest Dark Souls video on UA-cam. The "Giant Door Squad" video is a masterpiece and will always be my favorite Dark Souls video ever! I hope you actually see this comment lol
I really like what they where trying to do with Source of Maddness. Those kind of innovative ideas are really cool. Hope to see more of that kind of stuff
Damn, it would be super cool if the Hardland devs could repurpose the assets they made into an actual fun game somehow. All the art and stuff they created looks awesome. Would be a shame to leave all that in such a mediocre experience.
I played the game from around the closed beta in 2014 and it took them so long to finish the game, at some point i thought it will never come out but seeing how much passion they put into the world and the main story characters, i was kinda sad the gameplay was just average, could have been way better but i still enjoyed it a lot. Just running around finding stuff, exploring the world was so much fun! Trying to figure out the world youre throwing into was also great in my book.
Love seeing the 30+ mob of enemies come in from off screen to slowly corner you as you desperately try to roll through lmao. Great vid can't wait for the next one!
The artwork looks really cool. So far in this series the games that stand out as underwhelming have all had a relatively top down perspective, rather realistic graphics and a serious atmosphere to their story. I wonder if there will be one like that one day that ends up being really good.
Bloodborne psx is insane, the music is amazing for the gilbert fight, Im so massively blown away by its high quality. I have zero interest in demakes like this/nostalgia for the ps1 but Im still so amazed by how high quality it is, even going so far as to add so much additional stuff. Absolutely top tier stuff, I really hope lillith keeps making stuff or at least gets hired somewhere based off this.
I feel the same way. But this wasn't done by a single person. The music was mainly done by Evelyn Lark (aka. The Noble Demon) as far as I know. So if you liked it, you might want to check out her channel too. I couldn't find a complete list of who participated in this project though.
I havent been following this series and always thought it was the same 2 or 3 videos being recommended to me for quite a while now. I´m deeply grateful for your committing to covering all these souls likes. These videos are really cool and fun to watch and there are so many of them for me to watch :D
18:24 Animus: Revenant Is good but super hard especially for someone like me who never played a Souls-like game, by the way you can make the barrels explode to AoE The dodge animation changes according to the weapons you use. Don't forget the statue to unlock the stat-points. I'm sure an hardcore Souls-like player can find some pleasure with the mega-rough edges of this game.
This is one of my top 3 favorite series on UA-cam and I am always sosososo happy when I see another episode came out. Btw, I loved the hearts on the calendar at the start of the video to show the real Valentine's day, when all gamers rejoice.
Litterally some of the best content on this whole site. One of the only creators im always ALWAYS waiting and excited to watch the next vid. Love you man keep up the amazing work!
23:40 this part of the video gave me a sort of cool idea what if there was a game where as you play through it you encounter the final boss at the end of different sections of the game, but the catch is that he has a gigantic health bar just like this and once you finally kill him the game just ends. this could also act as a clear way to show your growth throughout the game as you encounter him throughout the game-time. it might also make for some interesting speedruns solely based on dealing the most damage possible as quick as possible to somehow kill him in the second encounter or something.
3:10 yoooo that fact that bloodborne psx "now loding" icon is just an armored core icon blows my mind because of course from soft would reuse assets like that!

Which leads me to say if you have any games you've found which would be interesting to talk either in this format or in your single game videos like Lords of the Fallen I'd love see that as well. I know others have said and I know your channel is very souls focused but I definitely think it's worth saying at least
oh, I love Curse of the Dead Gods! parrying is damn near impossible (but that goes for every game i've played that has it), but it's still loads of fun. Easily one of the best roguelikes imo.
Great vid as usual, Iron Pineapple! I always love hearing your engaging and thought-provoking criticisms of these games. On that note, I have some indie titles that I’d love to see you play and discuss (even though they’re not really “obscure” nor “soulsy”). They include: - The Messenger - Transistor - Blasphemous - Into the Breach I know these would be a little off brand for you, but I’d still love to see you talk about these, as one of my favorite game critics. Anyways, keep up the good work! Can’t wait for the next one!
Messenger is one of the best games I've played, and even though a lot of people know about it I still consider it a hidden gem, just because how unique the premise is. It has really funny dialouges that actually made me laugh and one of the best soundtracks out there. Anyone should try it out!
Check out Warm Snow. It's a roguelike similar to Hades, but it is definitely a game I think souls players would enjoy; I certainly do. (If curse of the old gods fits, Warm Snow surely does too.)
Don't know if you already covered this one, but theres a pretty cool Souls-like game on steam called Sands of Aura. It's still early acess, but it has great potential and very good art direction, give it a look.
On this note, I was wondering whether you heard of Bleak Faith: Forsaken, Pineapple? I stumbled upon a gameplay from it last year and it looks like a really interesting spin but having just checked, it's only going to be released in Q2 this year... fingers crossed this makes it to this series once any form of it's available!
Literally every time a game advertises itself as "Souls-like" it's always an empty husk that misses what makes Souls games so special. They aren't JUST moderately challenging games with a dodge roll, stamina bar and parry mechanic. The world is captivating. It feels real, and alive, and the story is - even if you don't pay attention to it - such a big part of it.
The story in souls games doesn't matter as much as the lore, and DS2 didn't really have anything special in that regard. And the less we talk about its Frankenstein world design, the better.
That demake is incredible. Petting dogs mode is hilarious and that new boss looks so freaking cool I would be low-key upset if he didn't make it into what remastered version of the actual game whenever it comes out
I never thought I would see a Metroidvania paired with one of these physics-based party games but Source Of Madness certainly exists. Also the visuals certainly could cause some madness, yeah.
There should be a lot more PS1 versions of modern games. I definitely believe there is a market for it, in the same way the music records are popular again. A good game + the PS1 nostalgia does it for me. I'm playing that
As much as I love the low-poly aesthetic, I find demakes to be regressive culture wank for people that just want to escape into their nostalgia instead of chancing the experience of something truly challenging or new. It's like how indie game makers have been trying their damnedest to just make more Mother or Chrono Trigger for decades now.
@@varsoonhks3211 what's wrong with feeling nostalgia? In our current climate games are being pumped out like it's nothing. Every month there is a new incredible game. Maybe some would just like to take a step back, enjoy where it all started and chill
@@TimZoet There's nothing wrong with feeling nostalgia. Spending lots of time and resources to create projects that just repackage that nostalgia and then just regressing into it, while comfortable, doesn't really afford much else.

I'd hope 'AI-assisted' reflect them using AI and images of their own or licensed work.
But hey, if they did actually steal and/or if you just find it ugly anyway, more power to you/fuck 'em.
@@SissypheanCatboy bruh the game looks amazing
Being able to turn the dogs friendly was heartwarming. Wish more games had that feature.
By the way, the Source of madness really can be called Lovecraftian. Its visuals do hurt you eyes and brain but in a good way. In the same way Lovecraft described his creations and world.
Maybe inhuman AI work is the key to create real Lovecraftian experience.
My thoughts exactly! I love what they did and I think it's genuinely really clever.
1:10 that statement bugged me enough to write this comment; the PlayStation did get duel stick support with the introduction of the Dualshock controller (as well as vibration support, I think as I don’t feel like going to the wiki or finding my controllers.) A potential update to the game that would be nice is a setting in controls for “analog” and “digital” to be able to switch to either one, with a “both” option being a nice addition as well
@@mcrib5102 but, the ps1 did have analog support (later on, but still existed)
I actually really like the idea of the Gilbert Fight in Bloodborne PSX. Like that's just such a cool thing to do different from the game and it really shows how much the developer(s) care about the Bloodborne.

Fighting qwop creatures from beyond the veil is pretty alright

When Elden Ring comes out you should casually include it in an episode of this series.
"So I came across this new game recently and it has a huge Souls-like feel to it. Okay guys here we go, Elden Ring" 🤣
I like how Curse of the Dead Gods visually looks like Darkest Dungeons in 3D. That's a pretty baller thing to pull off.

@@survivor3833 No.

Main character surely looks like the Ancestor when he was younger.

Moments like that in games are things that can never be recaptured, and I'm so glad you were recording
im amazed at how legit Gilbert the outsider seemed. I really wish he was in the actual game now
Honestly, Hardland has one of the most charming art directions I've ever seen, I hope we get to see that expanded and improved upon, it reminds me a fair bit of The Hobbit for the Xbox. 🙂
Curse of the Dead Gods is freaking amazing...it's so different and just straight up fun.

This series has introduced me to a lot of great games that I never would have found otherwise. So glad you are still making it.
Just finished Death's Door and enjoyed every minute of it.
It took me an hour to beat the final boss
Me too I have been enjoying Ender Lillies and is such a good game
I gotta say, I played through Hardland several times and enjoyed it immensely. There really isn't anything else quite like it.
"Ai generated enemies sounds like a horrible idea"
Having played No Mans Sky, I can confirm it is a bad idea.
Sometimes they're horrible, but sometimes that RNG hits different and you end up fighting Godzilla or a 6 legged flaming panther
@@youmgsandwiche have you even read the piece? He's saying the point of the arc is the interaction of mutual respect for their losses between Priamus and Achilles, you obviously don't know what you're talking about
I just need to say that every time I see a new video from this series, it makes me happy. Your openness is so refreshing. You could be a jerk when reviewing these games, but you're really not. Even when the game is bad, you try to be positive and encouraging when you can, and that's really cool.

“I want to like this game so much” was exactly how I felt about Hardland
I really like what they where trying to do with Source of Maddness. Those kind of innovative ideas are really cool. Hope to see more of that kind of stuff
Damn, it would be super cool if the Hardland devs could repurpose the assets they made into an actual fun game somehow. All the art and stuff they created looks awesome. Would be a shame to leave all that in such a mediocre experience.
such a good style wasted
For sure. Incredible style. What a disappointment.

I couldn't find a complete list of who participated in this project though.

what if there was a game where as you play through it you encounter the final boss at the end of different sections of the game, but the catch is that he has a gigantic health bar just like this and once you finally kill him the game just ends.
this could also act as a clear way to show your growth throughout the game as you encounter him throughout the game-time.
it might also make for some interesting speedruns solely based on dealing the most damage possible as quick as possible to somehow kill him in the second encounter or something.
0:41 Pretty much ALL the major gaming news sites covered it, so I think most fans of the genre know by now, but it's still nice to see covered :D

Love this series so much. The funny, strange, awful and great games you find are so interesting especially with your comments and inputs on them. Your humour is amazing (LOVED that intro) and the critiques you give are thoughtful and worthwhile. The combo of your first experience and closing thoughts afterwards is so good I genuinely love this.
Which leads me to say if you have any games you've found which would be interesting to talk either in this format or in your single game videos like Lords of the Fallen I'd love see that as well. I know others have said and I know your channel is very souls focused but I definitely think it's worth saying at least

parrying is damn near impossible (but that goes for every game i've played that has it), but it's still loads of fun.
They include:

Don't know if you already covered this one, but theres a pretty cool Souls-like game on steam called Sands of Aura. It's still early acess, but it has great potential and very good art direction, give it a look.
I cannot state how much I like this series. And I genuinely think you're one of the best reviewers out there. Cheers!
DS2 isn't a souls like I guess.
Absolutely, even ds2 which is recognised by most as below the other games in quality is a fantastic souls-likes thanks to its story and world
@@allmensland2106 It's story and world was garbage.
The story in souls games doesn't matter as much as the lore, and DS2 didn't really have anything special in that regard. And the less we talk about its Frankenstein world design, the better.
that troy game sucked
Should give Runewaker a go, great little indie souls like game with a different twist to the fighting mechanics!
Hardland is made by the creators of minigore which i loved when younger, i had high hopes but the game needs way more polish to be good imo
i'm sure it ran out of budget

The guy that beat Dark Souls 3 on stream?!
There should be a lot more PS1 versions of modern games. I definitely believe there is a market for it, in the same way the music records are popular again.
A good game + the PS1 nostalgia does it for me. I'm playing that
There’s no need.
@@varsoonhks3211 But that isnt the case for the bloodborne demake though, what would people be nostalgic for
@@varsoonhks3211 what's wrong with feeling nostalgia? In our current climate games are being pumped out like it's nothing. Every month there is a new incredible game. Maybe some would just like to take a step back, enjoy where it all started and chill
