the thing about new eden: they seem to just not aim for the stars but build the rocket first. sure, they have a lot of things in mind for their game (as visible in the roadmap), but they just start at the beginning, have a pretty solid foundation, and most importantly chose something accomplishable from the start. A top down 2D or 2.5D game with pixel graphics is just so much more managable than high end 3D physics systems and graphics if you don't just put an asset-sandbox together. i actually have decent hopes for that one.

Estencel is also really strange looking but what a rad idea to have the waifu be so animated and a more direct participant in summoning, respawning and resting. Like imagine dying in Dark Souls and having the firekeeper yoink you out of the bonfire to reform you.
Estencel looks like old school Tim Burton designing a Souls-like. And I'm, uh... I'm kind of into it. Thanks for doing these, they're always at least interesting, and your joy at finding janky things warms my heart. As does the fun of finding really interesting stuff when you didn't expect it!
what blows me away is how many talented animators there are out there. almsot every single game in this series has incredible 3D animation. maybe not studio quality, but you have no idea how difficult that is! it takes decades to hone a skill like that, and so many of these games impress me so much
All these comments tryna clown on you but they’re the one lacking common sense lmao. It can take decades for an average person to be good at 3D modeling, but the fact that the modeling is so good without ‘decades’ shows how talented these animators are. Reading comprehension be like
@@Seb_Falkor The thing is, how do you make a statement like "it takes decades" when there is no reason/example of that being true. 3D Gaming with the technical possibility for those animations isn't even that old. It is just a phrase taken out of the blue without any knowledge of it whatsoever. It sounds like the typical nonsensical phrase like "Thank you for your service". It is praise to something that someone not remotely understands and is just said for the sake of being said.
@@99Etien brother it is not a literal statement. It looks so good it looks like they’ve been doing it for decades. And your argument using ‘thank you for your service’ makes no sense either. It’s about the meaning of the saying, the spirit of ‘serving’ your country, not any literal specific actions. There are service members who’s job is literally janitor work and it would still be acceptable to thank them for their service. Shit, that would be acceptable even for non service members. There is meaning beyond the literal.
gotta throw a rock for Deathverse, one of the bigger problem you encountered was the low amount of players, that was actually because in the first couple weeks of the game there were a lot of server issues so very few players could play, now the game is much more alive, it takes 1-3 mins to find a game
no, you misunderstood, if there were few players it's because they made our favorite game a bullshit battle royal bastard, we were expecting something new, something that would be in line with what he had created, but we just had a battle royal
tbh the woman stepping onto the weird lightbulb upgrade thing and shattering it and her pulling you up from the ground in the respawn animation are really cool concepts, it's kind of a shame those animations are so quick and sudden
I really like that Void Sols parry. It's pretty much the inverse of perfect blocking, so you're more punished for doing it early than doing it late in comparison
corpse keeper has such a cool concept. I could see a really cool rouge-like coming out of a concept like that. The fighting game like combat is quite unique for the genre so they could definitely find a niche.
a game where you're a necromancer that is just dungeon crawling to kill things to harvest parts to make an army of abominations sounds so fuckin cool though
@@Kholaslittlespot1 Those three were the tutorial crew, you can see at 39:25 that he has 2 skeletons and 22 flesh. Enough for 2 corpses. The Demo is actually HUGE, I have 7 hours of playtime.
Estencel might have one of the strongest art and area designs I've seen with such limited resources. Just that boss introduction alone is so far and above anything most souls likes achieve. Really feels like a dev with alot of talent and a strong understanding of souls likes.
I mean...it's Bloodborne, even the boss is like an amalgamation of several BB bosses. (mostly the cleric beast, but featherier?) They should lean even heavier into their own style, basically whatever they're doing with the mysterious woman grabbing and teleporting you. Do more of that.
Estencel looks more art than game, but it's some good art. The care put into the animations for the maiden that revives and teleports you is such a cool touch.
@@xPhantomxify I think The Surge 2 was very close to a good competitor, at least to the Dark Souls games. The devs behind it made a huge amount of improvements from The Surge 1, so it just needs a third one with a few more improvements and it'll be amazing.
@@xPhantomxify Dude out here copy-pasting this reply like he's on a mission. To what, shit on indie devs? FromSoft makes good games, makes sense people want to explore the genre in different ways. But Dark Souls wouldn't exist if not for the games that came before and inspired it.
@@xPhantomxify Nope, it's not laughable. It's a really good souls-like game. They do things different enough that it's fresh but close enough that it feels like a proper souls-like.
I gotta say, I really love your style of "mini-reviews". The humour is on point, you give games a fair shot, you take production context (resources, experience, ambition) into account, and last but not least I share a lot of your sentiments towards these games. These videos are extremely enjoyable for me
Corpse Keeper is actually an incredible idea. I always loved games like Digimon and Dragon Warrior Monsters, so applying that to a Soulslike is a really neat idea. Hopefully we see improvement on the mechanics and overall design.
@@Soren59 Ya it looks very poorly optimized, but hopefully we see more games like that. I also really like how it's kind of Souls meets a fighting game. I think that's a cool idea.
This is the series that refuses to die. Still pulling in nearly a million views in a day after, what, a dozen of these compilations? Speaks volumes to the consistent quality and delivery youve continued to pour into this series. Thanks for keeping it going strong!!
My man I think you are the most tolerant video game fan I’ve ever heard of. You have no negative criticism for a game without also having something constructive to say and no vitriolic hatred for even the most broken, weird, or unforgiving games. Not finding even that last game to be unworthy of checking back on later out of curiosity to see how it fleshes out is a testament to your level of patience and empathy for developers
That's something I always forget he does until we run into an objectively bad game, but I appreciate and like that he does it. Like If you're gonna say it sucks, tell me is it because of your personal preference or do you think I'm doing something wrong here as a dev. xD
Deathverse is still very alive on PS5. Using the term "FromSoft PVP Goblin" made me check it out and I loved it, longest I had to wait for a game was about 4 mins
New Eden looks like it has all the straight forward fun of a top down souls combined with the simple and unassuming presentation of RuneScape! Definitely rooting for the developers!
Damn, deathverse look like a decent amount of fun. The environmental stuff looked cool and when you started getting a hang of it the gameplay looked really fun.
One of my favorite things about this series is seeing devs in the comments thanking you for taking time to review / play their games. Its so cool that they can get a little community spotlight and have their work appreciated in ways that may not have been possible on their own. Great video as always!
The robot calling you "Senpai" is supposed to be a call back to the original Let It Die, so I can only assume that robot just has Uncle Death's conscious in it or something.
Honestly, after watching a fair few of these, one of the things I like best about this channel apart from the obvious quality and time put into each video, is how impartial you are and how you respect quirkiness and effort on the devs part. Excellent content as usual!
New Eden, Void Sols, and Estencel all looked really cool, for different reasons. New Eden for taking such an ambitious concept and making something that actually looks like a good experience, Void Sols for nailing the core experience and somehow being very aesthethically pleasing despite being mostly simple shapes, and Estencel for the insanely cool character/creature designs.
Pine, I just wanna thank you for keeping with this series for so long, they really are the highlight of my day when ever you post. Keep up the good work, but don't feel too pressured and take breaks when you need!
For the last game it looked like you had enough flesh for two corpses (you had 22); the other bits were just optional ingredients to make them stronger.
Little tips about Deathverse. When you wait for your match, you can go into the lab and practice against a bot with all the items in your disposal. This is how you can pass time and try combinations of attacks outside of a match. your welcome ^^
40:11 I love how all of the combat animations for Corpse Keeper are motion captured. It gives the game this really unique rotoscoped feeling. Very cool.
I fuwking chocked when that surprise Gwyn came out. Also, the yellow scarf lady is amazing, you sometimes have similar companions in the games, but she wastes NO time. Doesn't talk edgy, doesn't convince you to do weird stuff, doesn't try to look cool, she just forcefully helps you and waits until something needs to be done again.
The reason why I kept watching this series is probably how objective and professional Metallic Fruit's reviews are. They usually capture the entirety of the games' characteristics and sometimes I would buy a game after seeing that he does not recommend it just because some part of the game that he mentioned clicks with me.
I'm 99% sure that God Souls was using sound effects from Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft. The conjoined twin boss was using the death noises from the Ogre units.
I can actually really recommend the original "Let it die"! It had a lot of really cool concepts and a lot of the designs and aesthetics looked super weird and interesting. The progression as you climb the tower was also really encouraging, if confusing at times. And Uncle Death was just a blast to have around.
That God Souls game is definitely a mobile port, I peeped that immediately from the UI. Those circle button icons to the QTEs. Estencel looks fascinating, and New Eden looks like so much fun! Void Sols surprised me with how well it plays.
I’m glad to see you playing Deathverse! Unfortunately the PC community is extremely dead due to server issues happening right as it released on PC. However, the console (PS) version of the game is living a LOTTT more compared to the PC version as the game had released on console a week beforehand (with no server issues) It’s unfortunate for us PC players but the game is really fun for sure.
As someone who has played alot of Let it Die, Deathverse is just a royal version of LiD that came out to late and has alot of the same clunky mechanics but it also has alot of the fun goofiness of the previous game, The biggest problem is tho that they are MASSIVE time sinks.
I don't know, I liked the grunge mixed with weird dark fantasy aesthetic and the arcade theme of the first let it die and I feel like by changing it to the weird TV thing ruins that.
Honestly it looks really fun. I'm no huge fan of BR but there seems to be quite a decent amount of mechanical depth between the interactive environments and diverse weapons and abilities. Especially the fact that the maps are much smaller than any other BR means the developers can put more effort into creating dynamic scenarios for the players to interact. The paywalled progression does suck and I do agree that a BR in 2022 seems really unnecesary lol.
Honestly it seems like too many for it to simply be getting it from a sound bank, I think they might just be straight ripping them from WoW. The skeleton sounds, the ogre sounds, human male grunts, etc
since all chineese games are at least part owned by tencent (that includes blizzard) they do this quite often as wow sound effects are pretty much theirs in a way. they are just reusing assets - still weird to hear
I just bought Corse Keeper. You had 2 corpses and enough flesh to construct both of them (You had 22, it costs 10 each) you just needed to hold X to make them. You were not soft locked, you just needed to explore the UI a bit more. I'm liking it so far.
The estencelc animations are amazing for a solo guy. The scythe drag has such great pose anticipation and weight. Definitely will keep an eye on that one.
I hope you never stop doing this series, MetalFruit. It's always entertaining, and you had some awesome-looking ones this time. Void Sols in particular looks like it could turn into something special.
You should 100% do another video someday where you check back on some of your favorite games throughout this series and see where they are today and if they are any better or worse. I think that would be a fun episode.
Corpse Keeper and Estencel seem really interesting I cant wait to play those games when they are finished. Void Sols and New Eden also seemed really great
Hey, maybe you could try Astlibra: Revision? It was apparently developed over more than a decade by mostly one Japanese guy, and it's amazing. It doesn't have stamina like a Dark Souls game, but you've got dodges, blocks, and some really cool worldbuilding. Feels like one of those games you can really feel the passion from the dev from.
Void Souls fr looks like the perfect mix of dark souls and god of war and im actually really really enjoying it. May have to pick it up myself tbh. I also love the introduction slides for bosses, reminds me of borderlands 😂
I love how much you are helping the game industry with these videos I want to create a game and I’ll probably take years until I can do it lmao But these videos give me so many ideas and how to execute them
Something I really enjoy about your series is you give so many games that no one would have ever heard of spotlight. Even if every game isn't the best you still got them attention. You put the best parts of them out for people to see the work and talent put into them and I think that's really amazing. So thank you for your work!
i gave a positive review for children of morta for its music and story, so don't get me wrong, but imo this game mechanic-wise was soo bad... especially once you end the game and enter game+. the worst game+ i've EVER played, no game even close! just running around, waiting for CDs and even the lowest-lvl mob was taking like 50 hits to kill (literally!) and they were advertising themselves as game+ being big part of the game... even multiplayer wasn't enough to make it fun. i feel like new eden is kinda the opposite.
I'd be really interested in a follow-up video showing some of the games you've mentioned you're going to keep an eye on. Like a 'did they live up to the promise' vid, if it has even been long enough since some of the games in the earlier iterations of these videos.
New Eden looks like it could be awesome if they keep it up. Reminds me a lot of Realm of the Mad God but with a greater depth of mechanics. I always loved how in Realm of the Mad God you could always have massive 60 person co-op dungeon crawls and battles. I would love to see New Eden go for a similar approach
Ok corpse keeper is actually a crazy cool concept as far as fighting games go. Give it a roster to pick your team of 3 from and make it a gauntlet/bossrush
i really like that you give all the games a fair shake and try to point out the positives even when there’s work needed to be done. it’s a kindness to the people who worked on them. when we review these smaller games, its always important to remember the people who worked on it were very passionate and usually on a very small budget. i’m glad you give those small teams a platform they might not otherwise have.

And having her stomping on souls to level you up, so you know exactly how strong her feet are, because that's what Miyazaki wants you to know.
that respawn animation is genuinely inspired.
The way she moves is really fascinating for some reason, they're fast and snappy byt graceful at the same time
Estencel looks like old school Tim Burton designing a Souls-like. And I'm, uh... I'm kind of into it. Thanks for doing these, they're always at least interesting, and your joy at finding janky things warms my heart. As does the fun of finding really interesting stuff when you didn't expect it!
what blows me away is how many talented animators there are out there. almsot every single game in this series has incredible 3D animation. maybe not studio quality, but you have no idea how difficult that is! it takes decades to hone a skill like that, and so many of these games impress me so much
decades to hone 3d animation skills? lol pretty sure ur not an animator if ur exaggerating like that.
I know one skill you don't "hone", common sense 🤡
It looks fun once ur good at it
@@Himself42 Lol, that's any battle royale. Not for me, I'll stick with Let it Die.
no, you misunderstood, if there were few players it's because they made our favorite game a bullshit battle royal bastard, we were expecting something new, something that would be in line with what he had created, but we just had a battle royal
I wish it got an update it has so much potential still untapped
Wonder if it inherited Let it Die's stunlock problem, ie the game was too stunlock heavy and runs lived or died on stunlock
This is hands down one of my most loved series on YT for years now. Also have to say it: the new intro is awesome!
You just made me realize this has been going on for years and now I feel older.
"FromSoft hear me out" I agree heavily with this statement. Those maiden animations and the model was honestly so cool.
Agreed completely.
tbh the woman stepping onto the weird lightbulb upgrade thing and shattering it and her pulling you up from the ground in the respawn animation are really cool concepts, it's kind of a shame those animations are so quick and sudden

I really like that Void Sols parry. It's pretty much the inverse of perfect blocking, so you're more punished for doing it early than doing it late in comparison
The mommy character in Estencel is a highlight for sure. That animation where she steps on the lightbulb thing did things to me.

corpse keeper has such a cool concept. I could see a really cool rouge-like coming out of a concept like that. The fighting game like combat is quite unique for the genre so they could definitely find a niche.
I wonder if there was more to that. Seemed like it was intentional for all your guys to die
a game where you're a necromancer that is just dungeon crawling to kill things to harvest parts to make an army of abominations sounds so fuckin cool though
@@Kholaslittlespot1 Those three were the tutorial crew, you can see at 39:25 that he has 2 skeletons and 22 flesh. Enough for 2 corpses. The Demo is actually HUGE, I have 7 hours of playtime.

Rogue, not rouge!
(mostly the cleric beast, but featherier?)

Estencel looks more art than game, but it's some good art. The care put into the animations for the maiden that revives and teleports you is such a cool touch.
@@xPhantomxify I think The Surge 2 was very close to a good competitor, at least to the Dark Souls games.

I'd like to try it once it's out
It looks interesting, but the decay mechanic seems way too punishing. Would be worth a try if it wasn't for that
@@Soren59 Ya it looks very poorly optimized, but hopefully we see more games like that.

Deathverse is still very alive on PS5. Using the term "FromSoft PVP Goblin" made me check it out and I loved it, longest I had to wait for a game was about 4 mins
good to know but I feel like PCS probably because of those this video as well
Idaho the Pc port does equal or a bit more players
I'm glad it is on ps5 it honestly looks super fun and stylized
Estencel reminds me of some alternative-universe Victorian dark fantasy, like Meaville's Un-Lun-Dun. Would love to see a full version!
Its always wholesome to see devs comment on your vids appreciating the spotlight
I think I've seen 3 under this video alone. Great to see the back and forth and appreciation.
mmmmmmm
New Eden looks like it has all the straight forward fun of a top down souls combined with the simple and unassuming presentation of RuneScape! Definitely rooting for the developers!
My two favorite games.
Damn, deathverse look like a decent amount of fun. The environmental stuff looked cool and when you started getting a hang of it the gameplay looked really fun.
Dude, Estencel should get picked up by a studio. That art is INSANELY cool.
Was not expecting Peter Griffin to welcome us in Deathverse lmao.

Little tips about Deathverse. When you wait for your match, you can go into the lab and practice against a bot with all the items in your disposal. This is how you can pass time and try combinations of attacks outside of a match. your welcome ^^
that game looks like it would be rlly fun to play if it had a bigger health bar lol
40:11 I love how all of the combat animations for Corpse Keeper are motion captured. It gives the game this really unique rotoscoped feeling. Very cool.
God I loved the Void Sols demo. Absolutely immaculate.
Shame you didn't find the rest of the hidden walls -- the hammer you can find is magnificent.
Estencel looked like if Tim Burton was the art director of a souls-like.
I'm 99% sure that God Souls was using sound effects from Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft. The conjoined twin boss was using the death noises from the Ogre units.
And the skeleton was using WoW skelly sounds too lol
It also used several sounds from Dota 2, both it's match start sound and the Lycan ult sound.

Makes me interested to try the PS version (although I honestly would've wanted to play it primarily for PC with mouse camera instead of stick camera)

The God Souls portion was driving me crazy with how many sound effects it shared with World of Warcraft
Honestly it seems like too many for it to simply be getting it from a sound bank, I think they might just be straight ripping them from WoW. The skeleton sounds, the ogre sounds, human male grunts, etc
Pretty sure like half of the stuff in that game is straight up stolen, including the voice acting.

Something I really enjoy about your series is you give so many games that no one would have ever heard of spotlight. Even if every game isn't the best you still got them attention. You put the best parts of them out for people to see the work and talent put into them and I think that's really amazing. So thank you for your work!

Always excited when I see a video from you come out!!! Love ya pineapple!!
New Eden reminds me a lot of Children of Morta aesthetics, I love it
i gave a positive review for children of morta for its music and story, so don't get me wrong, but imo this game mechanic-wise was soo bad... especially once you end the game and enter game+. the worst game+ i've EVER played, no game even close! just running around, waiting for CDs and even the lowest-lvl mob was taking like 50 hits to kill (literally!) and they were advertising themselves as game+ being big part of the game... even multiplayer wasn't enough to make it fun. i feel like new eden is kinda the opposite.
Usually 'indie' and 'MMO' spells bad news but the first game is really looking so good.
i really like that you give all the games a fair shake and try to point out the positives even when there’s work needed to be done. it’s a kindness to the people who worked on them. when we review these smaller games, its always important to remember the people who worked on it were very passionate and usually on a very small budget. i’m glad you give those small teams a platform they might not otherwise have.
