They've been configuring their base model laptops with 8GB of RAM since 2012! That is insane. The fact that they put 8GB in an M3 MacBook "Pro" is criminal. They're bottlenecking an amazing chip by skimping on one of the cheapest components in the laptop. All so they can force people to pay their extortion prices on upgrades. The MacBook Pros should be running 24GB now at least. I love my 16" M1 Pro, but some of the stuff Apple does is so blatantly anti-consumer that it is insulting.

6 GB just to turn it on? AZisk's own 8GB video showed and explained that this isn't true; not only is it only 4.xx, about half of that is "held" memory that can be given back if a user process needs it. Not to say that stock Apple builds shouldn't have more than 8GB, but let's not lie when we don't have to.
To give back means to dump it on the SSD, which takes time. Then, when another process needs memory, the OS will have to dump it again. When you switch between tasks it swapping data to and from the SSD again and again. It's much slower than just having enough RAM.
8gb wouldn't be so bad... Some people who just use a browser and email and maybe some single tasking office apps. 8 GB might be ok. But to charge another $200 for the large number of people who need 16gb when we all know those memory chips are $20 is criminal. One of the main reasons I will never own another Mac
My entry-level M1 bottlenecks very harshly even for “basic” tasks such as research. Once you’ve opened a bunch of tabs and some Electron apps like VS Code and Obsidian those 8 Gigs just no longer hold up. I can’t imagine there are too many people out there whose workloads are even lighter than the research I do, yet can somehow justify paying $1000 for a laptop.
“Large number of people” was such a politican sentence 😂. Most people don’t do heavy tasks their computers and simply watch videos, MS word, google docs, answer emails. Most people don’t “produce music” or “edit videos”. Most of us go to work & provide to our families. To those that do more, good for you. Macs last longer than windows so good luck with that.
MacOS usually eats around 2-2.5GB of memory, though it does populate spare memory with cached data so after a fresh boot you'll be sitting at around 6GB of memory used.
8 GB is fine for businesses who want their employees to focus on their work rather than 20 browser tabs. Or for students who can't afford more and should be writing their assignments. For everyone else it sucks.
20 browser tabs on 8 GB is no problem either. Most people would never notice the difference between a mediocre and a completely maxed out PC or Mac. They just watch youtube and the socials. There, I said it.
this speaks a lot about max tech and what they understand about computers. it’s not true that macos require 5-6 gb just when turned on. they can’t even understand that out of these 5 gb, more than 2 is cache, which will be cleared if the system thinks other user facing processes might need the memory. But yes, 16 gb for a 1.2k machine should be the base.
Valid point, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they don't understand computers. Windows does the same swapping out OS cache to use for other processes as needed. But, then you're really just just gimping your OS when you hit a critical limit, not to mention the igpu because it's all unified. And sure zero copy and the like make it pretty efficient. But at the end of the day, Ram is still ram..
8GB is fine for both Windows and Mac OS. Even 4GB is usable. People are just spoiled. The OS only uses extra RAM on idle if it's available for caching files and stuff. On Mac OS this is wired memory from closed applications. That memory is freed when necessary and in worst case you get paging. 8GB is fine.
That channel is very pro-Mac, so its cool to see him say this. And its very true. In my experience, I find Windows actually uses less memory than MacOS on a cold boot.
Relying on Virtual Memory with an SSD isn't good. Even with newer SSD's, they have a limit to how many times they can be written to and constantly using it as emergency RAM is going to ensure it dies much faster.

8gb is still 8gb. Is OSX more efficient than Windows, sure. But there are other OSs.. Most all linux distros are more efficient than OSX, for instance..

In some cases thats true, but it's going to damage their image more in the long run when Grandma doesn't want to buy another Mac because it became unusable after two years as applications continue to become more resource intensive. Especially with the current trend of "lets shove AI in it" and process as much as possible of it on edge inference (which is Apple's plan for their AI endeavors, and that requires a lot of RAM since Apple uses unified memory that is shared with the GPU.)
@@MrQuay03 I agree there’s a market for that price point but specially the entry-level MB pro with 8 GB is inexcusable IMO. It only exists with 8 GB to justify upgrade options for the Airs. And once you upgrade it to 16 GB it’s hard not to go for the true MB Pro. This whole thing makes no sense and inevitably Apple will eventually revisit those tiers and drop some options, simplifying manufacturing and being more consumer friendly.

There is virtually no speed difference between 8GB and 16GB. People want fast, reliable, efficient machine like Macbook M1, you can put them to sleep for days without draining the battery, great screen, great sound, good keyboard. Of course, get the 16GB if you are heavy users.
“I tested it!”…but not really. When I tested 16gb of Mac RAM against 32 of Windows “THE PERFORMANCE WAS PRETTY GOOD!” Test Apple base models against Windows machines. If the Elite chips are as good as predicted and give real competition, Apple WILL increase RAM. Business is business.
8GB is perfectly fine for most Apple buyers, because the most they would do is to watch UA-cam, Netflix and browse through photos and most importantly showing-off Apple logo at Starbucks.
8GB is perfectly fine for me. Currently enrolled in law school and use the base MacBook Air. The machine is plenty fast enough for my tasks, and even some gaming using crossover works just fine. I manage 30fps no issues.
6gig isn‘t just macos, also parts of installed apps are preloaded and also includes the graphics ram. As long you use the preinstalled apps 8gig will be fine e.g. streaming, watching movies, doing text and calculation stuff, surfing web, creating birthday party invites for the kids, creating family photo albums and look backs.

That is because the device will be utilising swap, not because 8GB is enough. You forget that streaming (especially UA-cam), browsing and productivity apps (Office 365, Google Suite, no sensible company uses just Apple's productivity suite) will always use more. In order to ensure that it doesn't crash, it uses Swap. However that isn't showing that 8GB RAM is enough, it's showing that a much worse fallback is required to avoid catastrophic failure because 8GB RAM is not enough.

I’ve a 16GB Mac Mini and a 8GB IMac both M1. They both work brilliantly. However I only use them for surfing, email and document editing and a lot of SSH remote terminals. I’m completely satisfied with the 8GB iMac and it’s a 4.5k display. The Mac Mini is overspeced and rarely uses more than 8GB. ;-)
On an M1 MBA with only 8GB belonging to my wife, I notice the swap being used aggressively. Since the SSD isn't user replaceable I always remind her to keep opened tabs and apps to a minimum. Last I checked months ago smartctl reported around 1TB written to the drive. As a casual user (browsing news, social media, etc) I feel 1TB seems excessive seeing as she's only had the MBA for 2 years. Other than worrying about SSD health, it's been a very satisfying experience.
I'm a Windows User though, however, I've been living my life with just 8GB of RAM. It does the job done, I'm a student and someone who loves to do intensive task by running and testing different programs. It has a lot of compromises, but on a day-to-day basis, it works fine, I also use this for the Affinity Apps, it can also edit on Davinci Resolve, but, only on cutting and combining clips together, can't handle color grading, unless you use some lighter video editing software like Kdenlive or you edit on the browser. But, as what people say, and as a tech nerd. 8GB is 8GB, it's good for average consumers, office work, writing, photo, publishing, and design edits are fine except if you use some of the AI features on the software like the "Generative AI" on Photoshop, it'll take minutes. I use an Athlon 200GE, so this is my experience with this PC. Can't upgrade because my older siblings have their own life to focus on and parents doesn't prioritized my PC experience.
64gb for home pc/linux machine I push the limits to try and utilize over 32 to make myself feel better. 40gb on mac at work I sometimes have to figure out what to close to open an adobe product. Usually it's turning off a docker container.

MacOS does not use 6GB of RAM. Just because there is data sitting in RAM, doesn't mean it is "in use". You can install MacOS 15 on old Macs with 4GB of RAM with an HDD that can't even use swap, and MacOS runs. When I had an M1 MacBook Air I was running AAA games like the modern Resident Evil series and I was barely using 7GB total, sometimes it would dip down into 6GB. If MacOS was using 6GB of RAM, how would there be any RAM for the GPU to render Resident Evil and also have RAM for the actual game code too, on an 8GB MacBook Air?

Had Apple said it's equivalent to 10GB I could almost agree. You can credibly add the difference in overhead (Though you should add the 5 must have paid OS extensions that make MacOS bearable), not a percentage difference. All the major operating systems all support paging/swapping and memory compression. My 8GB micro laptop runs Linux like it had 3GB of ram extra as compared to when running on Windows for the same workloads on the same hardware. Mac is not quite as good, as Linux on memory efficiency so 8 feels like 10 not 11. My 16GB M1 Macbook Air definitely does not even match a Windows laptop with 24GB of ram in terms of useful memory capacity. Since it's a flat addition it matters less and less as you go up in comparative memory sizes.
You have to look at when swap space starts kicking in with your particular use case. My base M1 mini does pretty good with somewhat large Logic Pro projects. Swap only really kicks in when I fire up superior Drummer 3, and that quickly ramps up the swap to 8GBs. I’m definitely going to get a Mac Studio with 32 gigs when the M4 comes out. For me, even 16 gigs isn’t enough to avoid swap.
It's important to note that Windows users and Mac users do not use the OS for the same reasons, so yes, 16 GB for Windows is the minimum in order to do stuff that you won't do on the Mac. But if you're gonna use both for the same reasons, then Mac needs 1~2 GB less.
I just ordered the m3 pro 14 inch 18gb 512gb for adobe creative cloud and figma i assume this will be enough cuz mostly from adobe i use only photoshop So photoshop, Figma, Web browsing and mostly not very larg files This is the first time i will professionaly try a macbook because im a windows user And i hope those specs are fine and will not dissapoint me
Sorry Max, not true. The OS uses about 4 GBs and gets out of the way when more memory is needed. I have a 8GB Mac Mini (M1) and can run the latest llama3 8B directly on the silicone ((no swap). You can also run a 6GB container (not great, but you can do it).
It will use 6 gbs of memory. The difference is that when you have such a low amount of ram, the os will save up some ram (for other programs), in this case 2 gbs and, and put those 2 gbs of data on your ssd. Accessing data from an ssd is much, much slower than accessing it from ram, so your system will feel slower. There are videos on youtube that shows that when you have quite a few tabs open in your web browser, it takes like a second to switch between tabs. I dont know about you, but if i buy a laptop for so much money and it lags when im just browsing the internet because they scammed me by not putting in a component that costs basically nothing these days, id be really mad. You can now crawl back into your cave, apple fanboi.
I recently purchased a new midtier laptop with i5 1135g7 and 8gb ram and it came preinstalled with windows 11 and I must say I agree with how 8gb ram just isn't enough for modern OS, my RAM usage was 60-70% on idle (mostly due to RAM being cached) but still multitasking wasn't as ideal in windows for me. Switched to OpenSuse and now I'm able to run multiple tabs of firefox in one monitor and play genshin on my laptop without much issue.
I have an m1 MacBook air with only 8gb and it runs perfectly fine. If you are not a power user you won't have a problem. The problem with a lot of UA-camr reviews of laptops is that they are all video editors and think everyone else is. Average person needs something to browse the web and do spreadsheets.
Everybody's discussing RAM but for me the real problem is SSD. I think they should use at least 1TB in 2024. I have about 500gb of osmo pocket 3 footage from my last vacation. How do I work with it on this laptop?
Arm uses double the ram compared to x86 because it’s risc and reduced instructions require twice the instructions to do the same task! Great power efficiency but more ram usage
For gaming on my PC with Windows 11 I go for 32gb of ram. Windows 11 already use some ram so you need lots of headroom in ram to be able to use heavy photoshop and video editing and to play fast moving gaming.
Windows uses 6GB because it's got too much bloatware and random crap. AtlasOS is a lot lighter while not removing too much. macOS uses 6GB because the latest versions are just heavy asf, CPU wise too

I would say 8gb is enough for the daily consumer as unified ram is much more efficient than the traditional RAM we are used to. 16gb of unified RAM would be recommended for heavy multitasking and video or photo editing, in my opinion.

Unified memory means that the RAM is shared between the CPU and GPU (and shares an address space) which means that a large amount of RAM is used up by the GPU for graphics data, unlike systems with a dedicated GPU. Unified memory is also on all modern Intel and AMD CPUs with integrated graphics.

Well it really depends what are you running and what are you doing. There are apps that are memory intensive and the are some needs more of CPU. As a developer a lot of my stuff needs more RAM whenever I use windows. Example I develop on Windows and I need WSL/WSL2 so it does eat a lot more of memory.

In my opinion go for an M3 pro with 18GB RAM or more because, in extreme Deep learning tasks, you will need a powerful graphic card unless buying a Google Colab subscription for GPU-related tasks. However, regardless of model, RAM has to be at least 16.

My M3 Max (48GB RAM) after clean boot uses 9.3GB. Activity Monitor says: Used memory = 9.3GB. App memory = 4.3GB. OS is 5GB? There’s also 8GB cached files. Modern operating systems use extra RAM as file cache to speed up things + reduce SSD wear. 8GB is problematic as there’s no room for disk cache at all. And lots of swapping too.
Yep as an Apple fan boy I do like to test drive a lot of Apple products a lot of them I do end up keeping but the thing that I haven’t kept recently was my M2 MacBook Air well actually two of them. The first one was because it was the cheapest model with 8GB RAM it was basically horrible in my opinion. Then the second one was a 15 inch MacBook Air M2 that I expected out to the highest amount of RAM and 2TB of storage I loved it, but the only thing was the new MacBook Pro just came out with the M3 chip and I ended up buying that instead. And don’t worry I also suspect that out to total came out to about $5500+ I basically over future proof that because like my older Macs this one will probably last me for 10 years. I went with the 16in highest M3 Max chip with 40 core GPU, 128GB of RAM, and the 2TB storage. I did that much ram mainly because I want to match the amount of ram in my main windows PC system right now. Also if you look at it with the other Apple products I own a $5500 Mac book wouldn’t really be surprising also Apples free financing is the best. And yes I personally enjoy it and believe it was well worth it because I have so much of the Apple ecosystem that this laptop works great for every day use and vacation.😊
Okay. But guys… while it’s true that 8GB is a joke these days, he clearly doesn’t understand how RAM or unified memory works. Unused RAM is wasted ram. For instance, if a device with 32GB of unified memory or RAM were to boot up the same OS on the other device using 6GB idle, it would use about 20GB, probably-not 6. Devices are made by smart people, and they know that ram is better put to use by using it and not just sitting there. So, yes, it’s too little, but no, that’s not how this works!
I honestly think 8GB of ram can work depending on your use case. I have an M3 base spec laptop (8GB RAM, 256GB Drive). I do some work in sketchup (not a full pro here), and I’m able to render 3D lighting software from twinmotion with it. It’s surprisingly snappy. I also use a lot of programs simultaneously, which I know is more relevant to RAM. However, I don’t use this computer for hardcore things like I do on my production computer. The M3 is mostly for daily low power things like email, UA-cam, programs to run AV at my church, and light video editing. So, depending on your use case, you can get a ton of mileage out of 8GB, and I’m proof that it’s actually true. Still, with all that being said, 8GB is clearly not the same as 16GB 😂🤣😂🤣 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
I will NEVER run any OS that isn’t open source EVER again. If I need something proprietary, I spin up a virtual machine. I even have a MacOS VM in qemu. I think I’ve used it once.
@SahilP2648 but if you really wanted OS software you could just do that instead of installing windows. For my home computer it just never made economical sense to buy a Mac. The performance of macs are always lagging behind, older hardware, over priced, sometimes not even offering new hardware. And for my laptop, I just need it to browse the internet most of the time, so a Google Chrome book does just fine at what 250 dollars. Forget about repairs on a Mac you might as well buy a new pc. I repeat there is no good reason to buy a Mac unless you like burning money.

8GB is indeed enough... Assuming every single app you're going to use is hyper-optimised, works completely natively, doesn't supply its own libraries and uses shared ones as much as possible... ...aaand isn't written in Electron.
Nobody is going to mention this, but more RAM eats more power out of your battery. Apple decided that the extra battery runtime is more precious than keeping more apps in the background at the same time. A laptop with 256GB of memory will drain the battery much quicker even if you only use 20GB of that memory. These RAM chips are power hungry beasts.
6 gigs to turn on? My heavily bloated Fedora set-up consumes 6 when browsing the internet, telegram and mastodon at the same time and only 2.7 when turned on
@@ochiorbus Yes. There's not enough RAM so the SSD has to do double duty acting as additional RAM. Not only is it slower, but you're writing more to the SSD. Generally the SSD can handle hundreds of terabytes of writing to the drive, but if you plan on using the laptop for 10 years as its doing all of these swaps, there's a chance you could actually use up your drive, and it's not easy to replace an SSD in a Mac because its soldered to the board.

MacOS becomes visibly laggy when it starts swapping, especially when switching between spaces. 6 GB just to turn it on? AZisk's own 8GB video showed and explained that this isn't true; not only is it only 4.xx, about half of that is "held" memory that can be given back if a user process needs it. Not to say that stock Apple builds shouldn't have more than 8GB, but let's not lie when we don't have to.
To give back means to dump it on the SSD, which takes time. Then, when another process needs memory, the OS will have to dump it again. When you switch between tasks it swapping data to and from the SSD again and again. It's much slower than just having enough RAM.

My entry-level M1 bottlenecks very harshly even for “basic” tasks such as research. Once you’ve opened a bunch of tabs and some Electron apps like VS Code and Obsidian those 8 Gigs just no longer hold up.
I can’t imagine there are too many people out there whose workloads are even lighter than the research I do, yet can somehow justify paying $1000 for a laptop.

MacOS usually eats around 2-2.5GB of memory, though it does populate spare memory with cached data so after a fresh boot you'll be sitting at around 6GB of memory used.

this speaks a lot about max tech and what they understand about computers. it’s not true that macos require 5-6 gb just when turned on. they can’t even understand that out of these 5 gb, more than 2 is cache, which will be cleared if the system thinks other user facing processes might need the memory. But yes, 16 gb for a 1.2k machine should be the base.

Valid point, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they don't understand computers. Windows does the same swapping out OS cache to use for other processes as needed. But, then you're really just just gimping your OS when you hit a critical limit, not to mention the igpu because it's all unified. And sure zero copy and the like make it pretty efficient. But at the end of the day, Ram is still ram..
8GB is fine for both Windows and Mac OS. Even 4GB is usable. People are just spoiled. The OS only uses extra RAM on idle if it's available for caching files and stuff. On Mac OS this is wired memory from closed applications. That memory is freed when necessary and in worst case you get paging. 8GB is fine.

Relying on Virtual Memory with an SSD isn't good. Even with newer SSD's, they have a limit to how many times they can be written to and constantly using it as emergency RAM is going to ensure it dies much faster.

In some cases thats true, but it's going to damage their image more in the long run when Grandma doesn't want to buy another Mac because it became unusable after two years as applications continue to become more resource intensive. Especially with the current trend of "lets shove AI in it" and process as much as possible of it on edge inference (which is Apple's plan for their AI endeavors, and that requires a lot of RAM since Apple uses unified memory that is shared with the GPU.)
@@MrQuay03 I agree there’s a market for that price point but specially the entry-level MB pro with 8 GB is inexcusable IMO. It only exists with 8 GB to justify upgrade options for the Airs. And once you upgrade it to 16 GB it’s hard not to go for the true MB Pro. This whole thing makes no sense and inevitably Apple will eventually revisit those tiers and drop some options, simplifying manufacturing and being more consumer friendly.

Also, factor in DDR4, DDR5, and high-end DDR5 Windows RAM. High-end DDR5 would be 7600 mhz.
DDR4 Windows RAM is half the speed of any M2/M3 chip.

8GB is perfectly fine for me. Currently enrolled in law school and use the base MacBook Air. The machine is plenty fast enough for my tasks, and even some gaming using crossover works just fine. I manage 30fps no issues.

6gig isn‘t just macos, also parts of installed apps are preloaded and also includes the graphics ram. As long you use the preinstalled apps 8gig will be fine e.g. streaming, watching movies, doing text and calculation stuff, surfing web, creating birthday party invites for the kids, creating family photo albums and look backs.

@@MoltenPie To be able to use the device with the latest features for as long as possible. The M1 will no longer receive OS updates sooner than the M3. This has nothing to do with the RAM.
That is because the device will be utilising swap, not because 8GB is enough. You forget that streaming (especially UA-cam), browsing and productivity apps (Office 365, Google Suite, no sensible company uses just Apple's productivity suite) will always use more.
In order to ensure that it doesn't crash, it uses Swap. However that isn't showing that 8GB RAM is enough, it's showing that a much worse fallback is required to avoid catastrophic failure because 8GB RAM is not enough.

I’ve a 16GB Mac Mini and a 8GB IMac both M1.
They both work brilliantly. However I only use them for surfing, email and document editing and a lot of SSH remote terminals.
I’m completely satisfied with the 8GB iMac and it’s a 4.5k display.
The Mac Mini is overspeced and rarely uses more than 8GB. ;-)
On an M1 MBA with only 8GB belonging to my wife, I notice the swap being used aggressively. Since the SSD isn't user replaceable I always remind her to keep opened tabs and apps to a minimum.
Last I checked months ago smartctl reported around 1TB written to the drive. As a casual user (browsing news, social media, etc) I feel 1TB seems excessive seeing as she's only had the MBA for 2 years.
Other than worrying about SSD health, it's been a very satisfying experience.

I'm a Windows User though, however, I've been living my life with just 8GB of RAM. It does the job done, I'm a student and someone who loves to do intensive task by running and testing different programs. It has a lot of compromises, but on a day-to-day basis, it works fine, I also use this for the Affinity Apps, it can also edit on Davinci Resolve, but, only on cutting and combining clips together, can't handle color grading, unless you use some lighter video editing software like Kdenlive or you edit on the browser. But, as what people say, and as a tech nerd. 8GB is 8GB, it's good for average consumers, office work, writing, photo, publishing, and design edits are fine except if you use some of the AI features on the software like the "Generative AI" on Photoshop, it'll take minutes.
I use an Athlon 200GE, so this is my experience with this PC. Can't upgrade because my older siblings have their own life to focus on and parents doesn't prioritized my PC experience.
64gb for home pc/linux machine I push the limits to try and utilize over 32 to make myself feel better. 40gb on mac at work I sometimes have to figure out what to close to open an adobe product. Usually it's turning off a docker container.
Using Xcode, Safari, CarPlay Simulator, UTM, and running some docker stuff never felt more stable on my M2 8GiB Mac mini.

MacOS does not use 6GB of RAM. Just because there is data sitting in RAM, doesn't mean it is "in use". You can install MacOS 15 on old Macs with 4GB of RAM with an HDD that can't even use swap, and MacOS runs. When I had an M1 MacBook Air I was running AAA games like the modern Resident Evil series and I was barely using 7GB total, sometimes it would dip down into 6GB. If MacOS was using 6GB of RAM, how would there be any RAM for the GPU to render Resident Evil and also have RAM for the actual game code too, on an 8GB MacBook Air?

You can credibly add the difference in overhead (Though you should add the 5 must have paid OS extensions that make MacOS bearable), not a percentage difference.
All the major operating systems all support paging/swapping and memory compression.
My 8GB micro laptop runs Linux like it had 3GB of ram extra as compared to when running on Windows for the same workloads on the same hardware.
Mac is not quite as good, as Linux on memory efficiency so 8 feels like 10 not 11.
My 16GB M1 Macbook Air definitely does not even match a Windows laptop with 24GB of ram in terms of useful memory capacity.
Since it's a flat addition it matters less and less as you go up in comparative memory sizes.

My windows laptop is using about 4.5GB of Ram right now, with just chrome open (16 total)
You have to look at when swap space starts kicking in with your particular use case. My base M1 mini does pretty good with somewhat large Logic Pro projects. Swap only really kicks in when I fire up superior Drummer 3, and that quickly ramps up the swap to 8GBs. I’m definitely going to get a Mac Studio with 32 gigs when the M4 comes out. For me, even 16 gigs isn’t enough to avoid swap.
It's important to note that Windows users and Mac users do not use the OS for the same reasons, so yes, 16 GB for Windows is the minimum in order to do stuff that you won't do on the Mac. But if you're gonna use both for the same reasons, then Mac needs 1~2 GB less.
I just ordered the m3 pro 14 inch 18gb 512gb for adobe creative cloud and figma i assume this will be enough cuz mostly from adobe i use only photoshop

Sorry Max, not true. The OS uses about 4 GBs and gets out of the way when more memory is needed. I have a 8GB Mac Mini (M1) and can run the latest llama3 8B directly on the silicone ((no swap). You can also run a 6GB container (not great, but you can do it).
It will use 6 gbs of memory. The difference is that when you have such a low amount of ram, the os will save up some ram (for other programs), in this case 2 gbs and, and put those 2 gbs of data on your ssd. Accessing data from an ssd is much, much slower than accessing it from ram, so your system will feel slower.
There are videos on youtube that shows that when you have quite a few tabs open in your web browser, it takes like a second to switch between tabs. I dont know about you, but if i buy a laptop for so much money and it lags when im just browsing the internet because they scammed me by not putting in a component that costs basically nothing these days, id be really mad.

I recently purchased a new midtier laptop with i5 1135g7 and 8gb ram and it came preinstalled with windows 11 and I must say I agree with how 8gb ram just isn't enough for modern OS, my RAM usage was 60-70% on idle (mostly due to RAM being cached) but still multitasking wasn't as ideal in windows for me. Switched to OpenSuse and now I'm able to run multiple tabs of firefox in one monitor and play genshin on my laptop without much issue.
I have an m1 MacBook air with only 8gb and it runs perfectly fine. If you are not a power user you won't have a problem.
The problem with a lot of UA-camr reviews of laptops is that they are all video editors and think everyone else is. Average person needs something to browse the web and do spreadsheets.

For gaming on my PC with Windows 11 I go for 32gb of ram. Windows 11 already use some ram so you need lots of headroom in ram to be able to use heavy photoshop and video editing and to play fast moving gaming.

I would say 8gb is enough for the daily consumer as unified ram is much more efficient than the traditional RAM we are used to. 16gb of unified RAM would be recommended for heavy multitasking and video or photo editing, in my opinion.

Unified memory means that the RAM is shared between the CPU and GPU (and shares an address space) which means that a large amount of RAM is used up by the GPU for graphics data, unlike systems with a dedicated GPU. Unified memory is also on all modern Intel and AMD CPUs with integrated graphics.

Well it really depends what are you running and what are you doing. There are apps that are memory intensive and the are some needs more of CPU. As a developer a lot of my stuff needs more RAM whenever I use windows. Example I develop on Windows and I need WSL/WSL2 so it does eat a lot more of memory.
The thing about windows is that you can upgrade the ram on every normal machine (laptop or desktop), but Mac you can’t!

In my opinion go for an M3 pro with 18GB RAM or more because, in extreme Deep learning tasks, you will need a powerful graphic card unless buying a Google Colab subscription for GPU-related tasks. However, regardless of model, RAM has to be at least 16.

My M3 Max (48GB RAM) after clean boot uses 9.3GB. Activity Monitor says: Used memory = 9.3GB. App memory = 4.3GB. OS is 5GB? There’s also 8GB cached files. Modern operating systems use extra RAM as file cache to speed up things + reduce SSD wear. 8GB is problematic as there’s no room for disk cache at all. And lots of swapping too.

Yep as an Apple fan boy I do like to test drive a lot of Apple products a lot of them I do end up keeping but the thing that I haven’t kept recently was my M2 MacBook Air well actually two of them. The first one was because it was the cheapest model with 8GB RAM it was basically horrible in my opinion. Then the second one was a 15 inch MacBook Air M2 that I expected out to the highest amount of RAM and 2TB of storage I loved it, but the only thing was the new MacBook Pro just came out with the M3 chip and I ended up buying that instead. And don’t worry I also suspect that out to total came out to about $5500+ I basically over future proof that because like my older Macs this one will probably last me for 10 years. I went with the 16in highest M3 Max chip with 40 core GPU, 128GB of RAM, and the 2TB storage. I did that much ram mainly because I want to match the amount of ram in my main windows PC system right now. Also if you look at it with the other Apple products I own a $5500 Mac book wouldn’t really be surprising also Apples free financing is the best. And yes I personally enjoy it and believe it was well worth it because I have so much of the Apple ecosystem that this laptop works great for every day use and vacation.😊

Okay. But guys… while it’s true that 8GB is a joke these days, he clearly doesn’t understand how RAM or unified memory works. Unused RAM is wasted ram. For instance, if a device with 32GB of unified memory or RAM were to boot up the same OS on the other device using 6GB idle, it would use about 20GB, probably-not 6. Devices are made by smart people, and they know that ram is better put to use by using it and not just sitting there. So, yes, it’s too little, but no, that’s not how this works!

I honestly think 8GB of ram can work depending on your use case. I have an M3 base spec laptop (8GB RAM, 256GB Drive). I do some work in sketchup (not a full pro here), and I’m able to render 3D lighting software from twinmotion with it. It’s surprisingly snappy. I also use a lot of programs simultaneously, which I know is more relevant to RAM. However, I don’t use this computer for hardcore things like I do on my production computer. The M3 is mostly for daily low power things like email, UA-cam, programs to run AV at my church, and light video editing. So, depending on your use case, you can get a ton of mileage out of 8GB, and I’m proof that it’s actually true.
Still, with all that being said, 8GB is clearly not the same as 16GB 😂🤣😂🤣 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
I will NEVER run any OS that isn’t open source EVER again. If I need something proprietary, I spin up a virtual machine. I even have a MacOS VM in qemu. I think I’ve used it once.
Bruv i got off the mac hype train when i realized i could build the same mac in about 50 percent of the cost on pc. 😂 i never looked back
Macs are a godsend for software developers though. I can now see why people use them (before Apple silicon I agree it didn't make much sense).
@SahilP2648 but if you really wanted OS software you could just do that instead of installing windows. For my home computer it just never made economical sense to buy a Mac. The performance of macs are always lagging behind, older hardware, over priced, sometimes not even offering new hardware. And for my laptop, I just need it to browse the internet most of the time, so a Google Chrome book does just fine at what 250 dollars. Forget about repairs on a Mac you might as well buy a new pc. I repeat there is no good reason to buy a Mac unless you like burning money.

@SahilP2648 I am not a software developer so I don't know anything how that would be a godsend. So I couldn't comment on that, but I feel like most of us aren't. What would stop you from installing an os operating system on a pc you build.

Just when you tryng to download some soft like DaVinci or Andoid Studio you can see redomended needed RAM for them. And always same for both OS.

Nobody is going to mention this, but more RAM eats more power out of your battery.
Apple decided that the extra battery runtime is more precious than keeping more apps in the background at the same time.
A laptop with 256GB of memory will drain the battery much quicker even if you only use 20GB of that memory.
These RAM chips are power hungry beasts.

6 gigs to turn on? My heavily bloated Fedora set-up consumes 6 when browsing the internet, telegram and mastodon at the same time and only 2.7 when turned on

They can do it. It just takes longer to do certain tasks than the 16GB version. Sometimes 50% longer.

@@ochiorbus Yes. There's not enough RAM so the SSD has to do double duty acting as additional RAM. Not only is it slower, but you're writing more to the SSD. Generally the SSD can handle hundreds of terabytes of writing to the drive, but if you plan on using the laptop for 10 years as its doing all of these swaps, there's a chance you could actually use up your drive, and it's not easy to replace an SSD in a Mac because its soldered to the board.
@@hermanwooster8944 If that was all there is to it (long-running tasks taking longer to run) it wouldn’t be that bad, frankly. The issue is, it’s not. MacOS becomes visibly laggy when it starts swapping, especially when switching between spaces.
Also, to provide context, I have lost about 9 % of my SSD’s capacity after 3 years of using my entry-level M1 MacBook Air as my main machine.
