I enjoy your comments. You clearly know drums. To hear you say I have no idea on his time signature is very honest. Quote from Carey on clicks: “It's a sad thing when almost every band you see isn't playing doing that, it's the clicks and backing tracks that are keeping time. I've never played to a click on stage in my life. You have to put yourself in this environment that's vulnerable and just fucking go off in the moment.”
Mmm, I'm of the mind that it's not necessary to throw shade at bands who play to clicks. It CAN be a crutch if bands let it, but I think sometimes we let ourselves think that using it is "cheating" when it really isn't. If you can't play, a click isn't gonna make you that much better. Actually, it takes certain amount of skill to play to one and not sound dull and robotic. That said, I 1000% agree that if you can play this tight at this level of complexity without a click track, that definitely deserves monumental praise.

The only other drummer I'd put on Danny's technical skill level is Peart (RIP). Also, the reason he's so tough to count is due to Poly-rhythms. It's often much easier to count off of Justin (bass), since Danny's often using the drums as almost a backing vocal track at times.

@Thomas Grey Yeah, technically there is a regular timing that is maintained for most of it, but the difficulty of using a regular click with those meter changes means it would probably be harder than not using one at all, not to mention the points where beats are deliberately way off-time. And yet that one F-ing cymbal (is that the thing called the high hat?) just keeps ticking along at it's own separate rhythm, with mechanical precision, coming from one of his feet. Like each limb has its own set of ears and its own brain. Insanity.
Danny is an octopus God in a man's body. 2 things to note about this video are Danny's dynamic control and precision. Danny plays in tympani fashion the way he plays notes on his tuned drums. Every note is played exactly where he planned it and exactly as loud as he wanted it. Also, the part at 14:50 where you go back to marval at the polymetric section, is a 3/16 played over a 4/4 where the flat, hand switching triplet resolves back on the 1 after 3 phrases. THEN he begins introducing new elements of the kit into the rhythm until there are 5, before reducing them to 4, then 3, then 2. That build up is mathematically amazing. Being able to write and play something complicated that sounds ridiculous is one thing, but being able to write and play something so complicated that sounds so simple is on a whole other level. I love watching these reaction videos. You can usually tell by the thumbnail weather someone is going to watch this and think " that was cool, Danny is a badass" and have no idea what just happened, or weather they're going to be counting the whole time and still getting lost ending in absolute amazement at Danny, the octopus God.
That is THE BEST REACTION to this video I have seen and trust me I have seen a few. He is an absolute master of his craft. This new album is a totally different experience to their other stuff, you can really see the maturity. Invincible is on a par with this song, although totally different. I highly recommend you dive into that one. John Kew has done an amazing cover of that one if you want to see the drumming, however if you just want to hear the song for what it is, you can just listen to the studio track. It will blow you away.
This is exactly what happened to me. Not a fan, watched pneuma drum video, became Tool fan. Listened to Fear Inoculum just about every day for the last 7 months
What really gets me is how Carey plays small and quiet jazz gigs, then with Tool he fills entire stadiums with this unmistakable and powerful sound. Great video mate, subbed!
Best part of the entire video 9:35 "I have no idea where 1 is" Great reaction by the way, love the honesty at the end. When someone can say that they feel like they know nothing about time signatures, you know they finally fell down the Tool rabbit hole.
I’ve been a metal head all my life. I never liked tool. My mates loved them. I wasn’t into it. My wife took me to see them live. Wow! Changed me. One of the most talented set of musicians on the planet in my lifetime
“You’ve now made me feel as if I know absolutely nothing about drums, and I’m gonna have to start learning about drums all over again” I hear that! I’m a professional chef. I started in 1993 as a pastry chef, and worked that for twelve years. Then I jumped over to the other side and had been going on that for another 8 years. Having knowledge of both pastry and hot food, I thought I was pretty well versed. I had basically fallen into repetition... I sort of accidentally ended up eating at a 3 star Michelin restaurant (Manresa) and was fretting about how much it was costing me before I got there. I was maybe three courses (out of 17 total) into my experience when I realized I no longer thought that over $300 for just me was too much $. I was flattened, and I felt like I’d been gut punched. I was in the same exact place there as you were hearing/watching this mastery, which is the audio version of three star Michelin dining for progressive metal. Tool as a band is in the same place as the best restaurants in the world. Many people don’t know about that kind of food, actual or audio, and are “satisfied” with blue box Mac and Cheese (pop?!)! Anyway, count yourself blessed man! I was after going to that meal, it changed my life, and my career... I was sooo complacent! It’s awesome when we can be inspired to the next level by the hard win talents of people who have been able to push past the norm to something special! An excellent reaction video sir, I echo everyone else, and you got my sub. I’d also love to hear what you think about Invincible!
No click for TOOL, just in ear monitors for him and that’s it. Thats the way they’ve always done things. Also he had to put his high hat in front because all the pads to his left he’s incorporated in his kit. Great analysis!!
I think Danny is tapping into other levels of consciusness, or better, unconsciusness. He spent his entire life practicing like 6/8 hours at day mastering rudiments and odd Times, that now all these things are part of his unconscious circuits of his brain. This is how, for example, kids learn to walk or speak. He is not controlling time anymore, he is just flowing in the river of time, and this is why he seems so relaxed and he can improvises fills around the time signature and orchestrations in the middle of electronic pads part. In fact the live versions are allways different from the studio's.
Respect for recognizing what you just saw and being humble. I went on a rabbit hole of watching reactions, too many drummers were too insecure to admit how amazing the thing was that they were seeing.
This song is a showcase for Danny's talents. The master of polymetric time signatures. The heir to Neil Peart. What's more amazing is he is 58 yrs. old at the time of this recording. Tool is simply an experience and Danny Carey is simply one of the best drummers alive today.
Love your reaction. Thank you for listening to this amazing band. Danny is, in my opinion, the greatest of all time. It brings me great joy to know the younger generation is open and willing to listen to, and appreciate this great music!
Great video man! I’ve been playing drums for 25 years and he makes me feel like I know absolutely nothing too. He’s great and they have definitely become my favorite band as I’ve aged. I used to avoid them because of the time signatures but now I have the patience and appreciation for it.
Danny has been an absolute FREAK behind the kit right off the jump. Even if he didn't hone his craft any better than Tools first album-he would STILL be at the top....but like wine.....he has gotten better with time. Amazing reaction to the vid-REAL and humbling. But aspiring to be better is always a good thing...keep at it brother. He has been at it for well over 40 years
I love seeing an accomplished drummer humbled by Danny, and I mean that in the best way possible. You're the ones that have a chance to follow in his footsteps, not the ones that think they can already pull it off. I love playing and I can't even air drum to his simplest stuff.
More amazing than this is going to see them in concert and watching Danny do this for over 2 hrs, and do a 10 minute solo in between while the other guys gave a break. Had a great seat where I could see everything he was doing, blown away.
I appreciate the honest assessment of the drum playing! I will clue you in on a recent interview with Maynard. He has said that he doesn’t write in 4/4, more in the 6/8 area, because he doesn’t breathe in a 4/4. He referenced Joni Mitchell because she didn’t write in 4/4. Tool sound is different because they are.
Welcome to the Tool Army bro.. I've seen this 30 odd times, maybe more! Which then took me into reactions and your video, it's great that Tool are finally opening a lot more eyes to their musical genius, the best reaction I've seen hands down. Definitely give this album a go it will just shine a light on every other they have put out, enjoy the journey 👍
Great video brother. Im a happy subscriber now. 👍 I’m impressed that you identified the 33/16 time sig. You’re the only one I’ve seen that was able to pick up on it. It’s also impressing that you noticed how intricate his polymeter is during the instrumental. In the last section check out his right hand. All double strokes throughout the entire instrumental with the right hand is hard enough, but in the last section he goes from playing 5 drums with the right to 4, then 3, then 2 to create a walls are closing in/tightening/tension building affect, and then boom! Any and all drummers out there can learn a ton from that part alone. You CAN in fact create these types of moods with percussion. Also, he never plays to a click. It would foul them up! 😂 Great video!
I agree as a 45 year old I had a buddy who I went into coast guard boot camp with who was a huge Tool fan and I didn’t get it but now maybe with a more refined sense of what great music is I now appreciate them a whole lot.
Subbed JUST for this excellent reaction. It was very interesting to see you go from your statements at the beginning to how you were blown away at the end. Yes, you are right, Tool gets better with age. I'm Danny's age now, pushing 60, and I've been listening for decades, probably heard every song 10,000 times, and it *never* gets old, but the more *I* age, the better Tool sound and the more the message rings true. I hope you do continue your Tool journey; there's nothing like them out there. Stay safe and hope you keep going down the Tool rabbit hole.
Im not a drummer (at best an average guitar player)i dont know how many times ive watched that video? Each time i do,it sends shivers down my right side, unbelievable!
Great, great reaction!! You got me into Tool know (as well)!! I am a big fan of Porcupine Tree, esp. with drummer Gavin Harrison. I'm not sure if you already reacted to him. But if you didn't, please watch the song Anesthetize, live from Tilburg!!! Another Porcipine Tree song that might be interesting from a drummer point of view is Bonnie The Cat.
Yep, you got it. I got it in '93. I've been trying to drum like him ever since. (Jonkew) does drum covers of many of TOOLs songs. Exact to the sheet music. I've learned a lot from him.
I can't believe you actually called out the time signature of 33/16 on the first listen. The main riff is usually written as 5/8 + 7/4 + 7/4, which would be 33/8. That is impressive that you spotted the 33 so easily considering how unusual of a count it is.
On the other hand he counted the 4/4 part as being 19/16. But to be fair, counting Tool's time signatures at first listen is always a bit of a gamble. If I had to count the time signature for The Pot when I first heard it I'd never have guessed the whole beginning of the song till the second chorus was in 4/4.
I think even those of us that are long-time Tool fans had our minds blown the first time we saw this particular drum cam. I really appreciate your insights at the end, and it all sounds like it checks out. Tool isn't for everyone, but their music will lead you on an amazing journey, if it's something you like. I would definitely suggest finishing the Fear Inoculum album and then maybe try Lateralus, next. (A kind and friendly suggestion as a now long time Tool fan.)
I am glad to see Tool finally making an impact on the greater musical world. They are worth the effort to listen to. I have been on board since Lateralus. I first saw them in 2006. They do soemthing no other band does. And it is soooooo good.
Danny plays from feeling and muscle memory. Counting means shite to him lol. Danny sees music in colors. It just comes natural to him. Fellow musician.
Both songs are masterpieces. Invincible is probably my favorite on Fear Inoculum, as much for the lyrics as the musicianship. We need more HD video documentation of live performances for sure.
Got a sub today. You for sure need to listen to Fear Innoculum. It's drum porn. Hell it's almost porn porn. Btw I suggest listening to Invincible next. then Descending then Chocolate Chip Trip then Fear Inoculum then make sure to save 7empest for the end. Get you self some diapers. They won a grammy for that one.
Danny Carey has *specifically* stated that he *hates* the idea of playing to a click, and that Tool *never* does that. Glad you really liked it and are looking forward to listening through Tool's catalogue. I guess you now see why Danny Carey keeps being listed in the top-5 of rock drummers *EVER*. I realize that's a big statement, but he is *definitely* up there with Neal Peart, Keith Moon, etc.
Danny has some very delicate and creative drumming, whenever I see his passion and creativity it leaves me nothing less but inspired and very calm inside. It's a bit meditative, trance like. He surely has a style that is very unique to him, I could listen to probably a lot of drummers blindly and I would hear out DC simply because of his unique drumming. Maybe you could call it DC'esque, he deserves it. There are really great drummers out there, he for sure can be considered one of them. You do not have to react, but I ask of you to watch two other drumcams: Triad and Lateralus (first one for this meditative experience and crazy creativity; later one for his absolutely mindboggling climax) Both these Drumcams are shit qualitywise, but that still is not able to ruin the experience watching him drum and learn from. Keep it up. And no worries if Tool has never been your thing, that's the thing with art, I never got much out of Mozart, yet I like Beethovens more "chaotic" pieces or Handel's baroque. Lateralus: ua-cam.com/video/dfwhSuyumz4/v-deo.html Triad: ua-cam.com/video/2dwxTd5JZ50/v-deo.html
Different strokes for different folks. I will mention however, that there does exist a handful of chaotic/dark pieces among Mozart's oeuvre -- of which inspired Beethoven -- that you might enjoy if you haven't heard them already.
@@olly8453 exactly, it's not even the prowess, they are all fantastic musical geniuses, but some just don't cling with you, you still respect it for the musicianship though. I'd never argue Beethoven is the better componist, just that I like his style more. ^^ I love Mozarts Requiem though.
@@Spasstiful Absolutely. Taste in Art is as diverse as there are individuals; it really comes down to what resonates with one personally. For me Mozart takes the cake -- very closely followed by Bach and Beethoven. Mozart was more restricted than Beethoven was during his lifetime, but even so Mozart was constantly pushing new ground, which paved the way for Beethoven to take music to where he ultimately did. Here's a couple of pieces you might not have heard from Mozart that are more "Beethovian" in their style: This is a prelude and fugue (the fugue has four independent melodies constantly interweaving though one another at once that a achieve a sort of chaotic fusion). Beethoven personally copied this work out by hand and studied it, as he did with many of Mozart's works. ua-cam.com/video/NDKdrQgp_q0/v-deo.html One of two "dark" outlier piano concerto Mozart wrote. Mozart hardily ever wrote works in a minor key, but when he did...he left an indelible mark. This piano concerto heavily inspired Beethoven. When Beethoven first heard this piece, at the end of it he remarked to his colleague: "we shall never be able to do anything like that." ua-cam.com/video/Mz-KGTZ0vrs/v-deo.html Cheers!
@@olly8453 Thank you for the pieces, I am indeed not too experienced in pieces of Mozart as it requires a lot of work getting into the works of great componists. Just never really got into Mozart, and when I tried, I just couldn't really deal with it, so I stuck more to the old baroque componists which Bach of course is another great one even though I find myself listening to Handel more. Beethoven I can only really enjoy or not even consider to put it on. Pretty mooddependend. I will give your suggestions a look, for the sake of discovering that I am missing out something I would regret. 🙏
@@Spasstiful What composer/band I listen to very much depends on my mood as well; anything from Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Dvorak, Chopin, Shostakovich, or Tool :P -- as well as many more. Happy to share :) Hope you find something appealing out of it -- but if not! Tis all good as well. I know a lot of people who say they just can't get into Tool, but that doesn't stop me from trying every gateway angle possible to see if I can get them interested :P Even so, there are just some people that it just isn't their thing -- never hurts exploring though!
I first listened to Tool about 15 years ago and I thought it was ok but didn't think much of it and now I'm 37 and they're favourite band. I think you're right when you say it comes with age...
No click around here. Lol. They don’t use it. The man isn’t human. You nailed it. There’s unbelievable musicality in his compositional style. Everything blends with the other instruments and vocals so beautifully. He’s not providing beats as a base for the other instruments. It’s a dance
Definitely do some more Carey. There is so much more to sink your teeth into. Drumming wise 46&2 is another good one to watch, there are plenty of pro shot live footage of that one. The ending to the song the grudge is another behemoth.
Tool doesn't play to a click. Danny Carey IS the click.
Carey likes to play 4 different timings at once.
He can do 5. But not with his pants on.

literally scrolled down during the video to post something really similar about Danny's thoughts on clicks.
That's a very dumb statement, so many bands have light shows, orchestra as backing track or whatever that require you to be exactly on time.
Watching drummers try to count time while Danny plays is a lovely recreational activity.
What even is time 😂
"I feel like.... I now know nothing.... about TIME."

5:19, but I have no idea what's going on
It's alright brother, nobody but Carey knows what's going on.
Best part of the entire video 9:35 "I have no idea where 1 is"
Great reaction by the way, love the honesty at the end.
“You’ve now made me feel as if I know absolutely nothing about drums, and I’m gonna have to start learning about drums all over again”
I hear that!
I appreciate this comment immensely.
I also appreciate this… that was likely one of the best comments, not for hilarity but for genuine content, that ive read on the ole utube
No click for TOOL, just in ear monitors for him and that’s it. Thats the way they’ve always done things. Also he had to put his high hat in front because all the pads to his left he’s incorporated in his kit. Great analysis!!
I never tire of this composition
I think Danny is tapping into other levels of consciusness, or better, unconsciusness. He spent his entire life practicing like 6/8 hours at day mastering rudiments and odd Times, that now all these things are part of his unconscious circuits of his brain. This is how, for example, kids learn to walk or speak. He is not controlling time anymore, he is just flowing in the river of time, and this is why he seems so relaxed and he can improvises fills around the time signature and orchestrations in the middle of electronic pads part. In fact the live versions are allways different from the studio's.
Tool eats time signatures like candy.
He recorded the entire album without a metronome & on analog tape. He is the best of all time.
Best analysis of this I've seen. Love it. This guy is a robot
“Is he playing to a click” - no, he IS the click
Musicians amaze me with counting.
Fear Inoculum is definitely a showcasing of Danny's talents
Except 7empest. ;)
Fear Inoculum is Danny playing with the rest of the band! No one can get even close! He's not human!
Major props to you for admitting Danny is way over your head. A lot of people are so caught up in themselves they can't give anyone else their due.
If you want more tool, especially from a drum perspective, the grudge. The ending of that song is GODLY from Danny Carey
The grudge is my jam out song that I get angry and shoot people in CS: Source to...it's my stress reliever. I approve your comment! ;)
Respect for recognizing what you just saw and being humble.
I went on a rabbit hole of watching reactions, too many drummers were too insecure to admit how amazing the thing was that they were seeing.
Maybe the best reaction to this video I’ve seen.
"I have no idea where one is" - no truer words were ever spoken regarding a Tool song.
Scary thing, though, because that section was 4/4😬
This song is a showcase for Danny's talents.
He has been at it for well over 40 years
“Q: What’s the time signature?
A: Um..the Tool time signature.
Q: What’s that?
A: Yes!
Q: Huh?
A: EXACTLY! “
Lmao.....that's great!!
I love seeing an accomplished drummer humbled by Danny, and I mean that in the best way possible. You're the ones that have a chance to follow in his footsteps, not the ones that think they can already pull it off. I love playing and I can't even air drum to his simplest stuff.
I never realized how impressive Danny’s dynamics & timing are until you reviewed this song!
I have seen this drumming 3 times in a row by three different critic`s reaction. First time ever approach to Tool. Yes, I AM MIND BLOWN!
I've seen Tool 7 times over the years, and hes just grown so much as a percussionist!!
It's said that Danny Carey made a deal with the Devil at the Crossroads. We're not sure what Danny got but Devil got drum lessons.
Great video brother. Im a happy subscriber now. 👍
I’m impressed that you identified the 33/16 time sig.
Great video!
I genuinely said 33/16 as a joke, Hilarious that it actually turned out to be the time signature hahah!
I agree as a 45 year old I had a buddy who I went into coast guard boot camp with who was a huge Tool fan and I didn’t get it but now maybe with a more refined sense of what great music is I now appreciate them a whole lot.
FUN FACT: Every Tool song is actually in the same time signature: squirrel/infinity. ;-)
Squirrel/infinity love it!!!
Squirrel/infinity is the best description
I'm 50 years old, grew with Tool.Yes it's so Tool..it's over ur head drummer.Respezt greatness
He's like 2 drummers in one. Incredible work.
Tool is a music you listen to each instrument firstly then all together to understand the magic behind.
Same
Still digesting, years and year later.
Дуже дякую за цю реакцію.. одна з найкращих. Так цікаво спостерігати, як поступово приходе розуміння всієї складності, а далі просто шок 😊
Yep, you got it. I got it in '93. I've been trying to drum like him ever since. (Jonkew) does drum covers of many of TOOLs songs. Exact to the sheet music. I've learned a lot from him.
Agreed! John kew taught me stinkfist, working on more..
This was really fun
I can't believe you actually called out the time signature of 33/16 on the first listen. The main riff is usually written as 5/8 + 7/4 + 7/4, which would be 33/8. That is impressive that you spotted the 33 so easily considering how unusual of a count it is.
Well ... No ... It's from the very very start to 2:35 4/4 9/8 4/4 5/8 4/4 . 5/4 2/8 14/8 5/8 14/8 5/8 14/8 5/8 14/8 5/8 12/8 8/8. ...
It’s easy to spot “33” in this video. Dude gives it away right there on the jersey.
@@nawulajchiwu A bird in the seat is worth 33 in the beat...
The drum cover guy John Kew does a deconstruction video of Tool’s Rosetta Stone. Am sure you would love it .....
Rosetta... stoned
I am glad to see Tool finally making an impact on the greater musical world. They are worth the effort to listen to. I have been on board since Lateralus. I first saw them in 2006. They do soemthing no other band does. And it is soooooo good.
Danny is big into sacred geometry. I’d imagine numbers and rhythms are especially easy for him. As it shows.
Danny plays from feeling and muscle memory. Counting means shite to him lol. Danny sees music in colors. It just comes natural to him. Fellow musician.
Listen to The Grudge, craziest drumming I've ever heard at the end. Also Invincible
Wish there was a HD video of that drum cam..
@@MaynardsSpaceship right! There are some good covers on youtube, prob the closest we'll get
That scream at the end of grudge is otherworldly!!!
Both songs are masterpieces. Invincible is probably my favorite on Fear Inoculum, as much for the lyrics as the musicianship. We need more HD video documentation of live performances for sure.
7empest is sick too.
There is not another drummer like Danny . He has the freedom in Tool to do whatever he wants . They all do . That's what makes them so special .
new album is another masterpiece. would suggest 7empest or Invincible were stand out tracks for me.
With Tool we have witnessed a musical revolution, the paradigm has shifted, welcome to the new era of rock music
TOOL porn
You do not have to react, but I ask of you to watch two other drumcams:
Triad and Lateralus (first one for this meditative experience and crazy creativity; later one for his absolutely mindboggling climax)
Both these Drumcams are shit qualitywise, but that still is not able to ruin the experience watching him drum and learn from. Keep it up.
And no worries if Tool has never been your thing, that's the thing with art, I never got much out of Mozart, yet I like Beethovens more "chaotic" pieces or Handel's baroque.
Lateralus: ua-cam.com/video/dfwhSuyumz4/v-deo.html
Triad:
ua-cam.com/video/2dwxTd5JZ50/v-deo.html
Different strokes for different folks. I will mention however, that there does exist a handful of chaotic/dark pieces among Mozart's oeuvre -- of which inspired Beethoven -- that you might enjoy if you haven't heard them already.
@@olly8453 exactly, it's not even the prowess, they are all fantastic musical geniuses, but some just don't cling with you, you still respect it for the musicianship though. I'd never argue Beethoven is the better componist, just that I like his style more. ^^
I love Mozarts Requiem though.
Here's a couple of pieces you might not have heard from Mozart that are more "Beethovian" in their style:
This is a prelude and fugue (the fugue has four independent melodies constantly interweaving though one another at once that a achieve a sort of chaotic fusion). Beethoven personally copied this work out by hand and studied it, as he did with many of Mozart's works.
ua-cam.com/video/NDKdrQgp_q0/v-deo.html
One of two "dark" outlier piano concerto Mozart wrote. Mozart hardily ever wrote works in a minor key, but when he did...he left an indelible mark. This piano concerto heavily inspired Beethoven. When Beethoven first heard this piece, at the end of it he remarked to his colleague: "we shall never be able to do anything like that."

Cheers!
Spoken mature for a 26 year old ... in terms of appreciation of the creativity
A drummer watching danny. (I'm lost) absolutely priceless!
There’s no alive like DC. The great Neil Peart was an inspiration for Danny.
Lol! “I wonder if the the metronome asks Danny what time signature it should play” F’n perfect!
No click around here. Lol. They don’t use it. The man isn’t human. You nailed it. There’s unbelievable musicality in his compositional style. Everything blends with the other instruments and vocals so beautifully. He’s not providing beats as a base for the other instruments. It’s a dance
I'm not a drummer and with a lot of practice of course I believe I could cover most other drummers. Danny Carey just warps my brain.
Definitely do some more Carey. There is so much more to sink your teeth into. Drumming wise 46&2 is another good one to watch, there are plenty of pro shot live footage of that one. The ending to the song the grudge is another behemoth.
