My favorite Mage has often been Black Mage, but its intensity often causes me to lean towards other mages instead! Especially due to how specific it is about spell speed (and more importantly opposing to other mages on the subject!) Which mage is your favorite?! Also, yes I am aware I left out the Leylines and Despair changes that came out two days ago! I don't think it changes the rankings much though!
My heart belongs to Black Mage, but if I expect any difficulty (particularly with new content), I go to Red Mage. Seeing the healers down and there being no one capable of picking them up just makes me ache. As for Summoner, I haven't been bored since the 90s, and Summoner has interpreted that as a challenge; between that and it feeling to me more like a trial run of Clive than an FF Summoner, it just isn't for me. Pictomancer doesn't appeal at all, either, due entirely to its aesthetic.
@@Qamikace final sting combo is comparable to a melee LB3, and self destruct is basically caster LB3. Diamondback is *stronger* than tank Lb3, although it is self only. I personally also like to consider Basic Instinct the "BLU specific" limit break since it pushes the job past what any other job could do solo (level synced, anyway)
Summoners are the envy of all healers with how much they can jump around during the fight, and Red Mages are the envy of Dragoons with how much they backflip off platforms
A fun fact from me: the german localization uses the classic suffixes for the various spell tiers instead of numbers, meaning -ra and -ga. However, unlike english titles, the fourth tier of spells uses -ka instead of -ja, whihc i think is a bit dumb since it's so close to the previous tier.
Does German even use j for that affricate like English does? If it's not even the same sort of sound it doesn't make sense to use the same letter. That said, looking into it, a z apparently makes an affricate sound in German, albeit an unvoiced one, so maybe that would have worked better
Solar Bahamut kinda just feels like they really wanted to make Hydaelyn a summon but didn't commit. For my part I would've been over the moon if we'd been able to summon Shinryu.
It's so weird to me that I've been "maining" RDM as a casual, and yet took about a year to realize it mattered to not waste uses of corps-a-corps and engagement, and then it wasn't until DAWNTRAIL that I realized how big a deal it was to use Swiftcast on cooldown for bonus damage (and bonus gauge, which comes out to yet more bonus damage!). I love the depth of the game, and how many places there are where little improvements can eke out just a little more DPS. I've also known the pain of being singlehandedly responsible for the party surviving a run against Golbez, rezzing more than 20 times by the end of the fight, and still not getting a single commendation. Maybe I should macro the rez to say, "If you appreciate this rez, be sure to like comment and subscribe" or something.
I love the difficulty of black mage but spell blade, red mage, aesthetic is something I love. I hope we get something that's melee focused and puts elements onto the weapons.
Red Mage is my comfort class. It's like drinking a mug of hot chocolate on a winter's day while watching the snow fall under the warm glow of a street lamp post. (I'll stop now...) When I want a job that's not too complicated, fun to play, and feels effective, it's my go to. Sometimes I get lost into the rhythm of black to white to black to white waiting to get to my melee burst...and forget to pay attention to boss mechanics...and die... But, that's okay, because I had fun doing it! Having the heal is very nice to open world content, and the raise during group content gives me an extra purpose if the party goes down. I main healer classes, so this fills that niche for me when I want to play DPS. Black Mage is also a lot of fun. I was scared to do it for a long time, but I've now reached 90 with it and it was a literal BLAST! While I don't find the rotations too difficult to manage, I get frustrated when boss mechanics force you to run constantly to the point where I can't get a skill out. I enjoy the class a lot, but I'm not always in the mindset to play it due to those frustrations. Summoner is the class I leveled along with Scholar and only really tapped into to complete it's class quests. It's moderately fun, but I think the Aethergage mechanic needs an overhaul. Jumping between the summons feels fluid, but I always forget about aether skills and it's just not really interesting to me. Perhaps with more practice I'd have a change of mind. I rarely have a desire to play this class. Pictomancer is the newest one and I haven't played it much yet. I was SUPER excited to play it, but I struggled immediately to find it's groove. The long cast times to get your portraits during a battle is annoying. Granted, I'm sure if I dedicated more time to it I'd probably love this class. I'm just still focused on finishing EW so I can start DT, so I haven't focused time to level this class.
Tbh we black mages do get a fair bit of instant stuff. If you run out of all your instant spells and out of triplecasts before the boss stops throwing mechanics at you, focus on maintaining enochian, and use scathe if nothing else is possible I guess lol. It's not flashy, but 50 potency is more than 0
SMN has been on a downward spiral ever since ShB when they made carbuncle untargetable. The sword dragon instead of something expanding on the elemental smn. What is worse is its dps is so low, with no hope for decent buffs.
Looking at BLM, 7.1 changed a few things about it but it is mostly the same as usual except Despair being instant cast freeing up swiftcast for fire IV/flare star and a second charge of ley lines being there (i still am trying to figure out optimal placement of the second charge other than just whenever you have the chance)
Optimal would be right away since you can still get a few casts in under pot window, otherwise I don't think there's any better time to use it... maybe pre-2nd pot to align if you need
I'm so excited to try out PCT; jobs with an artistic motif always scratch an itch for me, and before this it was just BRD/DNC. Of the other three mages, I find I end up feeling most comfortable with RDM. I actually don't like the job much in other games because I'd rather just have a dedicated white mage/black mage, but in the conext of playing DPS, having reliable healing alone makes it the standout for me easily (same reason I love PLD). Ironically, I am actually not too fond of them aesthetically lol
In terms of classes and how good they are at staying alive after all healers die, PCT and BLM feel the weakest. Sure they have addle and barriers but PCTs barrier can only have a CD as low as a minute and both can be as long as 2 minutes. RDM and SMN can bring back dead healers and have healing skills (physick is quite weak but SMN has some stronger options). Tanks hardly need explaining. All physical jobs have second wind and the melees can use bloodbath and then burst to get hp. BRD has a skill to boost healing for second wind plus its own version of esuna and DNC has a heal skill they can share with their dance partner. Its a unique weakness but their high damage numbers make up for it I think.
While, yes this doesn’t affect savage raids or trials, Red Mage’s aoe combo became so much more fun in Dawntrail! Acceloration, swiftcast, dualcast, and the reworked manafication and moulinet can give you nearly 2 full melee combos at the start of a dungeon!
At current if you're 100, if you somehow have no real ability to regularly cast with BLM, you can Paradox Chain with [Fire Paradox > Despair > Transpose > Ice Paradox > Umbral Soul > Transpose] which isn't entirely viable but pleasant and silly that you do have the option to have 100% Uptime even mobile without lacking terribly much damage for the Caster that's suppose to be an Artillery Cannon.
So RDM is my main and that wont change. But its hard to deny that Picto brings alot more damage to the table. I think something more interesting to talk about though is the choice between RDM and BLK. At the start of DT RDM was clearing doing better then BLK was until we got our balance changes to adjust BLK damage back above RDM again. But as it stand right now i think between the 2 of them its more preference then "what is clearly better". For SMN there isnt alot to say. Though i do find it interesting a common observation people make for SMN is that SMN players are either really really bad, often not knowing what is going on in a fight, of are carrying the fight completely on their own back. Thats just a very interesting dichotomy to me for a class that is widely considered, easy to play.
Personal damage black mage does win. Overall damage (with the damage buff from picto included), picto wins. But that's why picto has the raid support grade on top! 😊
SMN is the caster I play when I really want to just not think and focus solely on the fight, and is also my favourite job for mentor roulettes just for that universal raise capability. RDM is for when I want to think a little, bring good utility and look stylish as hell while doing it. BLM I play when I need to level it to cap exclusively using Frontlines because I am terrible at it and I'm always dropping Enochian because I'm bad. PCT was fun while leveling it but the expectation of it being broken means I'm often scared to play it because if I'm not at least second in aggro then I'm bad at the game.

@@CaetsuChaijiCh That's right! I ended up throwing some pretty decent glamour together though, so it's all good; it's a really nice job for playing through the story, too. And thank you!
Maybe I’m not understanding “Gear Dependency” well, but I think Picto maybe should have a higher rating. With how many auto crits in the rotation, I think they will be heavily impacted by gear.
I know it is a bit strangely worded, but it is meant as how impacted (or relied upon) the stats are for a functioning rotation, not for maximum damage. Of course, all four jobs do way more damage the more stats they have! But Pictomancer's rotation for example, is perfectly functional at any spell speed amount (although it might feel a bit weird), where both Summoner and Red Mage has weird stuff happen when they get over certain thresholds, and Black Mage outright expects certain quantities to do certain things! Although I do see what you mean!
I always watch this videos, even when I already decided the Red Mage is the best, but also don't have any idea how the mage behave in late game is because I'm below level 70. So, a comment to help in the algorithm, maybe?
I really like rdm but I havent found myself liking other classes like RDM. it just feels so fun without being extremely restrictive. The only downside is that my damage is low.
Pictomancer go brrrrr. Cant remember the last time I had anything less than second enmity on them. Oh wait maybe all those times I smudged myself off the arena... Well other than those! 😅
I started with BLM and while I still like it, I'm definitely a SMN main when it comes to high end content. I'd like to get better with PCT but it still feels pretty scuffed atm. RDM for some reason I just cannot get the hang of, I always lose track of my dualcasts.
PCT has been a very fun addition to the roster for me, especially since I'm not feeling SMN or BLM right now, although the 7.1 changes help BLM to not feel horrible anymore, I'm still not a fan of a lot of the DT changes. RDM is very fun but I will kill myself with a backflip way more often than I care to admit. The role is in a weird spot though, BLM I feel needs to have the highest damage ceiling full stop to justify how restrictive and difficult it is with no team support options, it doesn't do enough to compete with PCT practically IMO, and SMN needs a total overhaul, it feels like a stretch to even call it a caster job at this point. Like SAM is more of a caster than SMN now.
It turns out that skipping high fire 2 and high blizzard 2 at max level and simply alternating mode with transpose is optimal on aoe! 😂 The way it goes is, if we say we start in astral fire state: Flare - flare - flare star - instant spell if you can, and transpose - freeze - instant spell and transpose again, and repeat from the start. Instant spells can be reapplying thunder, or casting foul, or if you are using triple cast already you can just weave transpose properly after flare star. The reason is works is because freeze gives 2500 mp, and flare with umbral hearts makes it only cost 2/3rds of your mp, and flare is usable as long as you have at least 800 mp, and 2500/3 is more than 800! 😁
I have a level 99 BLM and a level 91 SMN, so I will focus on those as I haven't played the others nearly enough to have an opinion that goes beyond "Yeah, it's a job I want to level someday". There is actually a reason for those levels. I didn't level them further to have jobs that can benefit from the Pelupelu Allied Society quests. First of all, I wouldn't take either of them into high difficulty content. I'm not used to these jobs to the point that I wouldn't hold the party back. Secondly, not sure which one I consider my favorite. Mages are alright, but neither of the two made me want to be a mage main. I can play them well enough for casual content and that's it. I guess my favorite is wipe mage. Oh, wait, we're not in the healer video yet. Then there's also the gearing problem. Is it even problem? Idk. Do other mages hate speed? Because a speedy BLM is easier imo and might be what I'd choose.
Red mage gets really awkward to play if your gcd is faster than 2.47 because of how it starts to misalign with fleche and contre sixte. SMN will also gradually misalign bahamut from searing light with more speed. Picto doesn't really care about speed so it isn't outright made weird by it, but it isn't helped much by it either. So all three mages other than blm don't really care or really don't want it, so it gets awkward if you want to play blm well on top of other mages! 😅
@@CaetsuChaijiCh So it is a big problem. My 1884 SPS BLM has a GCD of 2.32 with IL 660 gear. It will be even shorter at level 100 with better gear. And I generally want to be able to play all jobs, so farewell, SPS, you will be missed.
@@CaetsuChaijiCh Assuming they're not limited to one, I could. Which is still the case for IL 730 gear. Right? Can't have more than one on me. I could put it on a retainer or in my chocobo saddlebag, though. That would allow me to have more than one.
@Viech54 this is correct, but if you are limited to only tome gear anyway, it is likely some pieces will be favored by blm, where others are favored by the rest, so you could get two decent sets that both use a mix of 730 gear, 720 alliance raid gear, and 720 augmented crafted gear. That way you also have a way to dodge spell speed tome pieces for the mages that don't want the speed in the first place 😊
Going to guess before watching. Picto is the best by far and is incredibly overpowered. BLM completely overshadowed by PCT but might mention that it does better than PCT in a party without raidbuffers. RDM is in a good state and second best for players to pick but the burst is very busy or something. SMN is considered the worst due to its boring rotation, lack of damage and utility being overshadowed by RDM but recommended if you dont want to try.
I feel like red mage is very easy to play okay but very hard to play well. Probably only slightly easier than black mage to optimize. A single interrupted cast or poorly timed swiftcast can ruin everything. Sure black mage stands still more but it does consistent damage so the worst thing that can happen is two ice spells in burst, and getting back on track is possible with enough skill. ...Not to mention rng can affect when you want to use acceleration/your non 2m melee combo. But since red mage has the nasty raise tax I think it attracts fewer optimizers and so fewer people who would even notice this difficulty.
As I've said before, Pictomancer is Blackmage's gay cousin. Before you guys come at me, I'd like to point out that I'm not meaning that in an offensive way, I love PCT with all my heart, I even main it now that I've picked it up and can't see my character being any other class besides WHM. Though I do have to say that I feel that PCT is the most mobile for me and is a lot more fun and forgiving for being thrown off when it comes to your rotation than the other mages (BLM being the most unforgiving). Summoner is the "no thoughts, head empty" mage, but that is too boring for me, Black Mage's lack of mobility is not my cup of tea, and while Red Mage covers those weaknesses the other two have, it doesnt really work well with controller use for me, no matter how I fix my hotbar, it never seems to feel right. Pictomancer is the best of all three for me, almost "no thoughts, head empty" without actually being there, it has a lot of mobility, which is right up my alley, and the buttons are simplified enough for me to easily use on controller. TL/DR: While I like them all, Pictomancer is the best of all 3 worlds for me, even if it can't raise or has any self healing until level 100 with that raid wide heal during its burst
Red Mage & Summoner tend to be my favorites, whereas I'm just kinda "okay" about Pictomancer, and Black Mage is my least favorite caster *and* job in the entire game.
The funny story there is that in my previous mage comparison, many complained I didn't include it, so this time I at least included a (brief) explanation 😂
Black Mage is still just, unfun to play. Personally I would of given the Defense one star, if even that. Manaward is pretty useless. It's a 30% of your HP shield, not a mit. Radiant Shield for SMN is also in there. SMN is forgotten. PCT is fun. RDM is REAL fun, but is the red headed step child of the magic ranged dps (pun intended). Range tax, utility tax, is just nonsense. I'm glad they buffed the magic end of the melee combo, but the toolkit needs more. ALL magic dps need an auto damage filler not a dot. Melee and Physical Range have auto attacks, magic range has nothing.
Firestarter is guaranteed if you use Paradox in Astral Fire. Firestarter fishing only an issue in ARR content, where you’re stuck spamming Fire 1s until RNG blesses you. There’s no point in fishing for Firestarter after that because HW/StB/ShB rotations don’t really support it and EW/DT rotations are guaranteed Firestarter.
@ThisIsntAUA-camr sweet. Thanks. I never finished leveling and learning BLM before dt, and now with the dynamic being shifted I find myself relearning from scratch.
Logs are currently preliminary and may not accurately represent how job dps stands until we have a larger sample size. BLM gain was calculated to be 10% more cDPS than BLM in certain fights
"Non-Standard" and "Freeform" Black Mage mentioned! I quit the job due to the Dawntrail changes, believing such words would never be associated with the job ever again. We have our freedom back? Time to return to the job, if so...
There is nowhere as much freedom as in endwalker, BUT relative to the freedom of other jobs, black mage still has some of the most creative tricks up their sleeve. It is a possibility the newly instant despair also opens new doors, so as long as the black mages keep looking I'm sure there's more to discover!
With the instant despair changes in 7.1, people have been discovering cursed rotations that actually work that employs only instant casts for a good minute.
Not really, you have a few staples like GIRL and af1f3p. Theres some cursed lucid dreaming stuff but the gain is very marginal and usually isnt worth doing

@ Oh ok I get you! Thanks!
I always watch this videos, even when I already decided the Red Mage is the best, but also don't have any idea how the mage behave in late game is because I'm below level 70.
So, a comment to help in the algorithm, maybe?
Appreciated!
I'd say all four mages excel at what they do well, so as long as you choose the one you like the most, you made the right choice!
The transpose Flare AOE rotation? What's that one?
It turns out that skipping high fire 2 and high blizzard 2 at max level and simply alternating mode with transpose is optimal on aoe! 😂
The way it goes is, if we say we start in astral fire state:
Flare - flare - flare star - instant spell if you can, and transpose - freeze - instant spell and transpose again, and repeat from the start.
Fire/blizzard 2 are extremely underpowered and its like 10% more aoe dps to clip your gcd and skip via transpose to just spam flare instead
Red Mage is my fave class. That lv 100 job gear is so fire. And Picto is too broken, they messed up with it.
chat we can always hold out for another summoner rework you never know 🙏🙏
I mean if they feel they are completely unable to build on summoner they just might! 🤔😊
Rdm has been my go to class for a while now! As for smn i still don't get why we don't have Sephirot egi it's already in the game
I will try not commenting before i finish the video...
I will try not commenting before i finish the video...
I will... PCT IS OP!!!
Pct is quite wild yes 😂
@Viech54 you could also maintain two separate gear sets of course!
I think I am the only person who thinks that Summoner is way harder than Black Mage XD
but to be fair I cant play Summoner at all
this video came out in tuch a weird timing now that we have instant despair and two leylines for BLM.
Yeah a bit awkward timing on that! 😂 I'd say one of them was a bigger surprise than the other!
Pictomancer won. The end.
Thanks for the 2 second video.
Red Mage & Summoner tend to be my favorites, whereas I'm just kinda "okay" about Pictomancer, and Black Mage is my least favorite caster *and* job in the entire game.
First 5 secs amd you already discluded blue mage
It's hardly a relevant job for most gameplay. It's a fun side job.
The funny story there is that in my previous mage comparison, many complained I didn't include it, so this time I at least included a (brief) explanation 😂
@@CaetsuChaijiCh think i was one of them lmao
Red Mage's only crime is being French (and boring as hell in the early levels imo)
Black mage is best mage. I will not change my mind lol
Ooooo. Is firestarter fishing the same as cure fishing? I don't wanna be that guy....
According to fflogs, BLM became top dps, next is picto
Logs are currently preliminary and may not accurately represent how job dps stands until we have a larger sample size. BLM gain was calculated to be 10% more cDPS than BLM in certain fights
I appreciate you putting only 4 stars into picto's personal damage. Making a rather future proof video :)
