Okay so how I hope that it is started. Almost like a noir movie with a cavill voice over explaining the world he is visiting and why he "an inquisitor" is there. Then over the course of the film show, dont tell, the horrors of the imperium such as life on a hive city and the gene stealer cults/chaos cults that he is investigating. Things go from bad to worse as he digs deeper that the cult is ready to enact whatever their final plan is. Now he works with that defence forces the planet has or has a crack team he "requisitioned" to stop that shit. At the very end, I'm mean the last 2 min, whether it's a movie or series he gets a message about some other mystery or major conflict and this is the only time Spacemarine should be either mentioned or shown. End credits.

The Esienhorn trilogy. First, he would fits the bill for a Eisenhorn like he was born to it. The trilogy is far and away the most human of the 40k books I've read. Eisenhorn fails, Eisenhorn gets hurt, Eisenhorn struggles, loses friends, has a love he can never be with, there is so much drama and concern outside of eternal war and his mission as an Inquisitor that it can fill whole episodes without a shot being fired. If they pick any other start besides Eisenhorn, I think the series won't take off.

Honestly believe a Ciaphas Cain series would be the best to open the 40k universe to the general audience. Love Eisenhorn and Gaunt but I find Cain would be someone that folks would find more relatable. Maybe I'm bias as it was the first series I read that propelled me into 40k lol

I love the Ciaphas Cain novels (Black Adder in space is just brilliant as a concept), but the problem I can see with adapting those stories first in the new Amazon deal is that they have a very tongue in cheek, comedic side to them that essentially satirizes the rest of the 40K setting, and I don't think a satire of 40K is the best way to introduce new fans to the setting. You need to play the setting 'straight' (so to speak) first, before you start laughing at the many odd idiosyncrasies of 40K. If you start by laughing at the oddities of 40K first, you run the risk of never being able to achieve any dramatic gravitas in the minds of the audience when it comes time to tell stories that demand it. As an example, if an audience's first introduction to, say, an Inquisitor is the (for an Inquisitor) incredibly laid back, friendly, and companiable Amberly Veil (who is also Cains love interest figure), then it might prove hard to later have to try to row all that back to convey how truly terrifying and uncompromising Inquisitors are supposed to be in the 40K universe. I think a more serious toned series like the extremely cinematic military sci fi stories of Gaunt's Ghosts or the almost cyber-noir detective tales of the Eisenhorn and Ravenor Inquisition novels would both be better starting points to give new viewers a more balanced impression of what the 40K setting is really like in its more usual incarnations.

    • @hewdelfewijfe
      @hewdelfewijfe Рік тому +11

@@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 Naw, if you play 40k straight, then you're just doing fascist propaganda. You don't necessarily need the "overt" comedy elements of Cain, but it at least needs to be over-the-top satire, e.g. "the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable" part of the tagline. At least, just don't portray most of the Imperium as the good guys, but you can get away with making a few of the characters into the "good guys" in the sense of anti-heroes.

    • @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954
      @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 Рік тому +22

@@hewdelfewijfe Playing 40K 'straight' is not automatically fascist propaganda at all, it just avoids overtly comedic manifestations of satire in favour of perhaps a more serious take on the stakes involved. The Imperium would not be depicted as the 'good guys' because, as is so often repeated, there are no good guys in 40K. A story like Gaunts Ghosts can show the brutal horror of war on the frontlines without depicting the Imperium as anything other than the marginally better option compared to the inchoate horrors of Chaos, which is not the same thing as being the 'good guys' at all. Similarly, the Esienhorn and Ravenor books also don't depict the Imperium as a morally unimpeachable society or anything close to it, and Eisenhorn's arc in particular is hardly a tale of some shining white hat hero paladin of righteousness. Eisenhorn is, to put it mildly, a very morally grey character indeed, and the narrative does not shy away from that. All I am saying is that it is a false dichotomy to imply that the only options when adapting 40K are either fascist propaganda or very obviously comedic satire. You can have a more seriously toned 40K story that doesn't shy away from what a messed up hell life in the Imperium really is, and just because the Imperium is a terrible and oppressive society, that doesn't mean its enemies can't be just as bad or worse, nor that genuine acts of courage and even heroism cannot be undertaken by some of those who fight in its defence because the alternative is even darker.

Part of me wants to see the primarchs but I also kinda hope they start out slow. I would like them to show how mythical and legendary marines, custodes and primarchs are within the setting. Most citizens of the Imperium only have first hand experience with the guard when it comes to the Imperiums military. They might tell each other tales of the emperors angels, but most will never encounter a space marine, let alone beings that are even more powerful. Seeing a primarch on screen needs to be impactful.

My guess would be that it will build up as well. Though if Henry plans on being in it early on this would make it difficult to keep up in the larger narrative if it does grow to include Primarchs as a guardsman or even inquisitor wouldn't be interacting with such important people more than maybe once or twice total in there lifetimes. Where as of course the reverse would be true if they did this and he did play a Primarch, He'd have to be absent for a majority of the early story only really getting a chance to show up occasionally latter on, and that's if it does turn out good enough to keep going that long to begin with. An interesting way they could maybe do both is by growing with on of the primarchs like the lion very very early in there youth, just when there starting to enter adulthood and before the emperor makes contact, they could introduce the Primarch halfway into the show which would give a decent middle ground and if done well I think wouldn't spoil the importance of the character. Of course the farther back into development the less godlike they are and the greater the potential to show there growth as a character. It's also not something that's been done in a super high level of detail to my knowledge so it could work out without having to worry about fitting the narrative of a book series not designed for film.

If I had to take a guess, we'll get something set in the modern 40k setting, but with (probably quick) flashbacks to the heresy, for context and to establish the history of the setting, for example, have a character, possibly Guilliman, approaching the eternity gate, then a quick shot of Sanguinius at the seige holding the line, probably with his face in shadow, since I doubt they'll cast him that early.

It's easier to realise on screen for a start, gives you more scope for storytelling and Space Marines should be used extremely sparingly imo. In the 40K universe, Space Marines are almost mythical for the vast majority of humanity, hardly anyone has seen one. If you resist the urge to make the show about them, then if you do eventually show one it can inspire the level of awe and fear they carry. Otherwise it can just become numbing.

You can also just make up whatever the hell you want, use the currently published novels as guide lines or just come up with something completely new, doesnt matter in the least because of how its all written. Cain also has romance and comedy, as well as the grittiness and more grounded aspect of a more normal war story like band of brothers. You can add space marines and more high fantasy aspects in as needed. I think its perfect, henry would be an awesome Cain, but if he wants to hold out for a greater role then thats fine too, i think Cain would be an excellent intro to wh40k for most average people, then he can launch into a grand story about the Horus heresy or Gulliman in the current setting. the best part is you can keep the cain stuff flowing as long as you want, just keep making up new stories, kind of like the james bond movies.

For example, the first movie (Iron Man) could be about a Cadian cadet's life and training up to him surviving his first battle and being promoted, which would introduce the universe through the eyes of a human and it would be easy to introduce the different factions through the training of the cadet, and the next movie could either be of a sister of battle or space marines and start introducing chaos elements and so on. That way we could have several movies dedicated to each faction, for example, we could have a trilogy of the Cadian cadet all the way to until he becomes an officer etc.

  • @Antares2

My opinion is that they should either start with "the beginning" aka Horus heresy OR with just something more grounded, like soldiers of the imperial guard.
In fact, I think it might be better to introduce the universe to the mainstream viewer through a fairly normal human like a guardsman than the godlike figures like the Emperor, Space Marines and stuff like that.
I see people mention Gaunt's ghosts, and I think that would be a good starting point. Give us people in a familiar situation first and THEN introduce the insanity bit by bit. Also, I would love a well-made adaptation of Gaunt's ghosts.
Once established, you can open the universe up to more exotic stuff, like super soldiers, space battles, magic and demons.

I think the comes down to what the target audience is, if you want to draw in non-nerds I can see anything other than humans being pretty hard, the Imperial Guard offers lots of options to "ease" the audience into concepts like the warp, chaos, space marines.

Cavill would work well as an Inquisitor and you could introduce a lot of other elements in his retinue like psykers, assassins, sisters of battle, arbities, and the mechanicus with each character getting a chunk of background to explain that part of the lore.
Once you have them root out a Chaos cult in the first series you can use that as a building block to bring in star ships, warp travel, different worlds, larger conflicts and the other races. Hes always falling upwards even when he's triying to work as minimun as possible because even if he wants a simple life he always end up doing the right thing, thats what makes him a sympathetic character and not looking like a Hero.

    There can only be one:
    Gavriel Loken.
Captain Loken is a good man at heart, with an indomitable sense of duty to the Emperor of Mankind over all else, even his own Primarch. I read the first 7 or 8 books of the Horus Heresy and Loken is a beacon of truth in the whole ordeal. He is a complex character with ups and downs, at times full of self-doubt but the guiding light to him is his sense of duty. I just read up on him, spoilering much (so I won't tell you what I just learned), but he is one of several pre-Heresy Astartes who survived and lingered on. His story is full of pain, darkness, doubt and, ultimately, his sense of fairness and duty.
In other words, he's kind of Geralt of Rivia in a bigger, even more complex and more technologically advanced world - and as such, perfect for Henry Cavill.

The 3 most likely options i see for any pre-existing W40K series being adapted to TV are Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts, and Ciaphas Cain. Not only are these three all fairly good starting loints for anyone who isn't already a fan of W40K to start out with, but they relatively more lighthearted and less convoluted than some other books and lore. That, and since all three have few Space Marines, that means less chance of the transhumans stealing the entire show for 'reasosn' Ultramarine style. I personally think the Cain series is most likely, due to how its humorous plots and gradual introductions of greater threats as each tale goes on would lend well to a live action adaptation.
And yes, i also personally want to see Henry Cavil as Cain. After seeing how he did Geralt justice in season 1 of the Witcher, i think he could work wonders with the HERO OF THE IMPERIUM too.

That being said, it’s great book material.

The Ventures of a Rogue Trader & his personal army, the investigations of an Inquisitor & optional his own Warband, or the service of a space marine & his Brothers because it makes the most sense to start off with one of the franchise's most famous parts & characters.
However, Personally, I wish after this series, future ones could be made to expand the universe & Lore of the setting, like humans living under Tau rule or the exploits of an Eldar warrior and other stories within the war-torn galaxy.

when introducing big settings like 40k to a new audience, it's vital you don't overwhelm them. don't info dump, don't dive headfirst into the muck of events.
take it slow and steady. introduce the main character, have the audience understand who the main character is and how they see the world. then ease the main character into the story. let the audience ride along. feed the details about the setting piece by piece, repeating when necessary, until the audience knows this is the Way of Things here. sometimes, you can leave a little thread of a plot, and let a future work focus on it.
the first work should be exploratory. you don't need to save the Imperium on day one. or even a planet. just a city would be fine. maybe the main character stumbles upon a genestealer cult. and the film ends with the marines mopping things up. the contents can start with dark dystopianism; sprinkled with 40k detective work; have some xenos slaughter-- with enough struggle to emphasize how deadly they are-- and a bigger fight or two. escalate things step by step.
and emphasize that there is always more machinations to deal with. something like that.

From someone very new to 40k lore, the coolest parts to me were the backstory of the emperor, prtmearchs, and horus heresy. Its going to be hard though, because there is so much cool stuff to cover, how do you even condense it into some digestible for an audience with no knowledge of the IP. I feel like Dune had similar challenges, which is probably why it took decades to for hollywood to throw money at it to attempt to make a quality adaptation. This can be a positive though, because 40k is the most unique untapped sci-fi/fantasy IP. If they get this right, the general audience will love it and they could make a lot of good stuff.

Assuming they want to attract a wider audience, either the Eisenhorn-series, Gaunt's ghosts or perhaps something like Dante's origin story of becoming a spacemarine, would make a good introduction to the 40k universe from a human perspective. Even though most of the main books deal with marines, primarchs and the emperor, these do not make for very relatable characters. The above titles would warrant an 'Andor-like' approach, gradually introducing the machinations of the 40k universe to a general audience. Space Marines should be a unique occurence at first, and the Primarchs or even Emperor should only be seen in passing, as the forces that dictate the universe in the background. Once established, one could then create more in-depth series, since - in contrast to Game of Thrones, Tolkien or Dune - 40k has such a vast library of stories to pull from, it would never really run out of steam for perhaps 50 years worth of series and movies. (assuming they pick the best ones). If they go in head-first though, I'd prefer Garro's story. That's the one I keep going back to.

In my humble opinion: There is already enough WH:40k content to know that it’s going to be successful, and for Amazon to go deep in it’s pockets.
    For the big-time franchise kick-off:
You start off with whatever Cavill vehicle he’s chosen, and that’s the flagship show.
    Setting the tone is important.
You can tell how careful he is when speaking about it and how much 40k means to him. Most likely he knows others share that genuine love and will arguably be more on the pulse of what will be successful, than anyone else on the project.
Anything that is released afterwards should be done keeping in mind the totality of the story, which is a huge undertaking, so however they do it, I just hope they are meticulous.
I’m guessing that as producer, Henry will be able to bring in as many experts and enthusiasts as suit his needs, avoiding “yes men”

The major issue with starting Gaunt's Ghosts is the simple fact they are simple humans. When reading the Ghost's Omnibuses in my mind I'm thinking to myself, Chaos Marines were set up as these semi unstoppable war masters that Space Marines had trouble dealing with but the "regular" humans that made up the Ghosts went through Chaos hordes like a hot knife through butter. And is this going to completely ignore everything that leads up to current 40K timeline? Cause The Emperor was around long before he was The Emperor and much of his philosophical and militarism ideals came way before their even was The Empire of Man. And a more major question is, are they making this for everyone or are they making this for the fans of 40K? Because that greatly changes where and when you start and with what story should take place first.

I think its important to ease regular folks into the 40k Universe.
I would start the introduction with something familiar...
Start a series or Movie based on the Imperial Guard. They have a WW2 feel and are composed of humans so most people can relate to and connect with.
Deal with the real day to day problems that a guardsman face, worried about family back home, problems with equipment being available etc.
They could be facing off against Tyranids (this would give it a starship troopers feel).
Space marines are very rare comparable to the average guardman (its about 1 space marine for every 500 million guardsmen)
the guardsmen could be talking about marines and wonder if they really exist or are just a propaganda tool by the empire to sow fear.
end of movie or series the guardsmen could be on the verge of losing a major battle and the Space Marines drop in last minute and help turn the tide of the battle.
I think something along these lines gives a good introduction to the 40K universe without overwhelming the average person with too many of the strange elements of 40K ( they can be slowly introduced and eased into the franchise)

It would be nice if he started with a more human setting like Gaunt. The 40K universe is intense and a lot to take in for people who don't know anything about it. This would give the uninitiated a chance to dip their toes in the water as you slowly expose them to it. You could focus on a cerebral HBO-like plot and slowly reveal incredible things like space marines over time (which would be lore accurate since they're an incredibly rare site to a normal person). This would (like mentioned in the video) save a lot of money and build the foundation to expand future projects.
