The emperor was asking for trouble when he named his favourite son Horus Heresy
Fr, he should of seen it comin
It was literally in his name.
if only Horus Superloyal was an alliteration
His full name was Horus NotGonnaDu Heresy
Wat? 😂 He is named Horus Lupercal
One thing i never understood about the books was how they would emphasize how handsome Horus was. I look at him and think 80 year old Bruce Willis.
pretty sure its suggested that he was able to alter peoples perception of him in some subtle psychic way. not to the same extend as the emperor but similar.
@@Janovich That would explain why some characters never thought about it.
Keep up the awesome work!

HERESY
An aspect of the heresy that has always struck me was that the ones who ultimately betrayed the Imperium tended to view themselves as above the ordinary humans. False Gods literally features superhuman soldiers conspiring to unalive a poet for the crime of criticizing them and acting like it is an outrage for Imperial army officers to call for one of their own to stand trial for crimes against civilians. Astartes like Abadon and the other traitors not only think that being superhumans make them better than ordinary people, but that such a trait elevates them above the law.
Isn't it understandable though? The same story has played out in real world history since the beginning of human history. Those with power subjugate those with less for their own gain.
@@GalaxyBrain88 Most certainly. The Astartes had their own chain of command, and correct me if I'm wrong, but they were not answerable to the mortal Imperial commanders.
@@missZoey5387 correct! For the most part.. I'm not a lore expert by any means but have read several books including the first 3 heresy books. One of the reasons Horus became resentful of the imperium in the great crusade was because of the commanding body of bureaucracy that was set up by the emperor to help govern the crusade. The primarchs including Horus did have to listen to their demands. One of the first things they did was set up a imperial tithe on planets that were brought into compliance during the great crusade which Horus did not agree with but it was enacted regardless.
I remember when they trampled the civilians in the book. They got in the way and mobbed the marines while Horus was dying. The inclusion of the, what were they, remembrancers? Was forced on all marine legions by bureaucrats on Terra, which contributed to the contrast of the relationship between real soldiers and politicians. They played a huge role of being a narrative obstacle for the marines.
Also, marines are more valuable than a regular human. Geneseed is rare in 30k, and limited in 40k. Primarchs are even more limited and cannot be made again. Also, if The Emperor found out his favorite son died because the marines carrying Horus to safety were stalled by overly curious civilians, he would have had all of them killed. His goal for humanity is to evolve to his level, which astartes and even more, the primarchs were closer to. Remember, The Emperor made thunder warriors, which had the personalities of killing machines, and wiped out nations of people. There is no innocence in 30k/40k.
Marines also, unlike thunder warriors, actually have emotions. Horus is their father and supposed to be immortal. They had also been sustaing more deaths than ever before. Their emotions got the better of them, and marines have the emotional control of children.
Civilians are treated similarly in reality. We don't have large groups of reporters running around in warzones, only a few who know they are risking their lives and need to stay out of the way. War is hell for everyone in the warzone.
TLDR: The first few books have a real contrasting narrative of how war only cares about heroes. We know who Alexander the Great is, not the civilians who were caught in the wars.
@@medhathobo Yes, the remembrancers. They were an organization consisting of poets, journalists, historians, and artists. The remembrancer that was eventually silenced was angry over that exact same scene. (some of the marines also conspired to get rid of the Imperial army commander on the Spirit of Vengeance for wanting to put the offending marines, especially Lokken, on trial)
Your voice is absolutely perfect for this. Good shit dude
This is probably the most straightforward video I've seen on this too. Keep it up :)
Samus is the man who upvotes Janovich videos!
Nice reference, shame it's heresy though.
My absolute favorite Heresy audiobook.
I am Samus.

As someone who has just finished Horus Rising and is halfway through False Gods, this visual breakdown is an absolutely essential accompaniment piece to better visualize the events, characters and plotline of those books.
I struggled getting into the books because of that reason

i would LOVE to see a continuation of this particular story. hell, ALL the stories surrounding the 40k lore.
Subscribed. Love the work and dedication placed into this.
The production values (and the hilarious little pop culture reference) are just awesome! That's a sub from me, dawg.
It's honesty kinda sad that we see the breakdown of the series this early: In Horus Rising Dan Abnett sets up Horus looking down on humanity and resenting mortals taking over what the Primarchs and Astartes have conquered, implying it will be the unifying cause Chaos comes to exploit. In False Gods however Graham McNeill has Horus duped to believe the Emperor is trying to be a god and makes that Horus' cause to rebel. And while the irony of Horus causing the future he seeks to prevent under false premises (and almost making those premises true as a consequence of his actions as of The End and the Death) is delicious, it also means there is little unifying cause in the rebellion since Horus' source is literally "it came to me in a dream".
Because there is no unifying cause every traitor primarch gets their own fall story and reason to rebel, which gives them very diferent motivations that demands they all pull to different directions, so that's what each writer begins to build on. Almost each Primarch's tragic law also become crippling, and Horus even lampshades this. As a result the Prmarch that was made Warmaster for his ability to get his brothers work together can't actually do that once he switches sides.
Yup. It's tragic, but something that came from the flaws of men and their pride.
I agree.
I went into HH blind and I was hoping it would take a few books for Horus to go from loyal to traitor.
It went way too fast to my liking. I was looking forward for more Luna Wolves stories 😢
1:10:40 one rare moment where "Trust me, Bro." really worked out.
this is HIGH quality keep up the good work janovich
The narration voice: articulation, intonation, pitch and tone makes listening easy. Quality work 👍🏻
My God the lore of Warhammer 40k is certainly deep and complex. I wish I had started painting these guys back in the 90s instead of the D&D minis. Ima enjoy exploring all of this lore. I don't expect to finish all the reading any time soon though. There is a lot apparently, lol. I'm excited, to me this is all new and cool. Thanks for the vids.
I discovered 40k about five years ago and fell down the rabbit-hole. I wandered blindly into the Horus Heresy, without any prior knowledge of the lore, discovering that the rabbit-hole does indeed go deep. I wish i could re-discover the franchise anew.
This video is really important to understanding the heresy. The Emporer didn't really explain the warp/chaos to his sons/the primarchs. Then he left horus in charge of "the great crusade" to retake the galaxy for humanity. The Emporer went back to earth/Terra to sort out the web way project, which would have closed off chaos from the galaxy and made interstellar travel outside the warp possible. Before he could finish the project horus and the lunar wolves started to come in contact with chaos on crusade. Horus was injured by chaos and his advisor (erebus among others) put him in a cultists temple to be healed. Horus saw the chaos gods and turned to chaos during this experience but was ultimately healed. He returned to his fleet and secretly started scheming against the Emporer. Eventually leading to the betrayal on istvaarn (not sure of spelling) where half of the primarchs turned on the Emporer in favor of chaos. Later the ones who turned to chaos would go on to attach terra and try to kill the Emporer. They ultimately failed, horus was killed by Emporer but Emporer was injured to near death and put onto the golden throne. That setting still has the Emporer decaying but alive on the golden throne. The throne projects a shit load of psychic power from the Emporer allowing his followers to travel in the warp somewhat safely and grants other capabilities. If I remember correctly he's been on the throne looking like a corpse with tubes and plugs keeping him alive for 10,000 years now. A few loyal primarchs as well as chaos primarchs have started to return after all going their separate ways after the horus heresy. There are soo many books that are total side quests, you really have to read or listen to the "important"/plot line books to understand what's going. Some of my favorite warhammer books are the Soul Hunter series about one of the Night Lords profits. But you wouldn't really know what is going on in the larger story if you only read that series, you would probably more confused than anything in regards to plot. The Raptor cult of the Bleeding Eyes!

I do wonder about the double-Emperor. He even had his own Malcador. THEN THEY STOLE HIS GOLDEN THRONE AND DECORATIONS FOR TERRA. This story never gets properly explained.
The entire thing was most likely a well organized and long running scheme of the Ruinous Powers to convince Horus to forsake Mankind. Think about it. It is too perfect. A hidden Emperor on a Golden Throne protected by an old man (the Inquisition of Malcador)? Obvious Chaos fuckery imo.
"I was there...The day Horus slew the Emperor!"
Forever these words send a shiver down our spinses.
Like Erebus said after stabbing Loken to Abaddon "the circle has been completed. Loken met a possessed person with Samus. And Samus was reborn in Lokens body. Damn I hate Erebus.
Erebus is just the worst isn’t he?
Samus was not reborn in Loken's body.
@@Lost7one then what was it then? Erebus killed Loken to complete the circle. And Samus was reborn? It's in the end of vol 3.
If just the damn blade didnt hit the arm but rather his chest..all would’ve been well. They were close to uniting the Galaxy after all. They would’ve only needed to kill the Space Kinksters, Bug Evolution 9001 and EMP Eaters to win. Awesome. One of the very few times I have actually watched a lore video, rather than just listen. Narration is spot on but the scale is really off, visual wise. It looks as though the they're invading a small town in the English countryside, in the opening 10 minutes.
Great work, you're obviously preaching to a VERY big choir with this stuff but you really do have the ability to make it feel new and intriguing again

Incredible! Love these and your Imperial Guard videos

i love how this narrates like a bronze age epic or mythological origin story. as a student of anthropology i want to chime in with what i know. people did not ever actually speak this way. this was merely a style of narration that comes from middle eastern oral traditions where speaking plainly about complex historical subjects due to the constraints of oral recitation lends it a noticeably unique style. such as in the bible or the quran or gilgamesh or hanno's journey. simple language and confident conclusions: "the man saw that the land was green and felt good for it was good". quips were also popular for their mnemonic simplicity and ease of recitation: "tyre falls and you think the sky falls with it".
Hey wait, I thought they were still in the antechamber of the mountains when jubal went nuts? Because the remembrancers were allowed to visit the planet and snuck off to see the actual action instead of being kept on the sidelines and ended up witnessing jubal\Samus

Damn ! This channel is a gem !
It is believed by some people that the Daemonic entity known as "Samus" was reference to Metroid's Samus Aran (as she is technically partially Xeno via genetic engineering in lore). Likewise the Horus Heresy is referenced in Metroid (Specifically Metroid Prime 3: Corruption) as the Horus Rebellion, Horus a planet Rebelled against the Galactic Federation (With help from the Galactic Crime syndicate: The Space Pirates), the Rebellion saw the 2 Olympus class planetary assault carriers GFS Olympus and Valhalla Sent to deal with it, things would go south incredibly quickly as Valhalla was board by Pirates and Rebels alike and would see all but the most veteran crew and marines killed just to repel boarders (with assistance of the ships AU). this is from a unused Lore piece in the game files though the Horus Rebellion is still quoted in game by conversation by 2 male fleet personal. Fleet 1: "I Haven't seen this many fighter scrambled since the Horus Rebellion." Fleet 2: "now that was some nasty business."

They didnt take Jubals body up to the Spirit, the Remembrancers were already on the planet, Jubals transformation and attack on the Remembrancers happened at the Fort in the Whisperheads, and Horus's meeting with Loken was at the military camp on the planet.

This is perfect
so when the plot demands it, Fulgrim can be a master of fortifications. that makes 'legion specialization' thing even more vague. and it's unclear whether or not loyalists even considered to use weapons of mass destruction (such as virus bombs) on Istvaan V. I seriously doubt Horuses capabilities as a strategist after he himself locked his forces on a single planet without any support
That pic used for The thumb nail is incorrect. White Horus should have the hair. Seafoam green Horus should be bald.
Awesome video. The "anathame" is pronounced ana tha may or ana tham ay. It's a different word than "anathema". An anathame is a ritual dagger used in ceremonial magick, while anathema is greek for "cursed", which is what Chaos calls the Emperor. Honestly, they chose to use those words probably because they're so similar.
Nicely done. Will follow the channel. Some story details could need some work though. 😅
