  • In this video, I’ll be gushing about all of the things I like about Guild Wars 2. If you’re looking for a new game to play, it’s an excellent option for a variety of reasons. Even if you already play Guild Wars 2, it’s nice to take a step back and appreciate aspects of the game that you may have taken for granted. Between the value it provides, unique design decisions, respect for players’ time, variety of content to suit any type of player, and exceptional communities, this game really is something that deserves some love. If you’ve not tried it yet, I can’t recommend Guild Wars 2 enough.

The "buy once, play forever" + "horizontal progression" combo is such a powerful move since it eliminates a grand majority of FOMO in playing the game. It brings peace of mind to a small but persistent area in my head.
In terms of combat, the dodge button made all the difference. As someone who play a lot of action games where dodging is mandatory, it felt right at home.
edit: if the game hooked you and you care about the story, buy the complete package with all of Living World Seasons. It would save you the trouble of trying to earn gold as a new player who just reached level cap. Consider a single Living World season as more than half the size of an expansion, the later Seasons are almost as big and relevant as the expansions so I wouldn't recommend looking down at their value.

mounts give you extra skills, and you are barred from many areas before you get them and level them up. how in the world can you still call it horizontal progression?
it is normal progression, albeit account based and you can only get it in certain zones.

    • @UtielTheHopeful
      @UtielTheHopeful Рік тому

@@kimrasmussen7188 The areas that require the use of mounts don't show up until you reach the expansion that adds them. Before that, you can access 100% of the world without them, you just can't make big shortcuts for yourself without help from a friendly mesmer who'll create a portal for you. So, for example, you have to go through a jumping puzzle without skipping it.
And if there are some events that require mounts, like holiday ones, they usually have a rental service nearby that let you use the required mount. It'll be without any upgrades, but it still lets you take part in those events and complete achievements related to them.

      @@UtielTheHopeful thats not the point.
its that so many people dont recognize
horizontal progression, even after playing it.
they are just repeating the mantra, despite the reality. its okay to like a game, but you have to like it for what it actually is.

@@kimrasmussen7188 Yeah, I misunderstood your comment. It seems a lot of people don't recognize that the mounts still operate on linear progression, probably because it doesn't go into a "bigger number is better than smaller number" direction.
What comes the closest to horizontal progression is probably just changing the gear stats and your skills and experimenting with them instead of relying on just the "strongest" ones.

I bought it after playing for only like 2 hours. I saw that huge world boss in the swamps and joined in, died a bunch, but the horde of 50+ people all downing it and me getting to take part and still get loot even dying 5 or so times was a hook for me.
I’ve been playing about 2 weeks now. It gets better every time I login. I just started Fractals. I’ve done 3-4 and they are so cool.
I love how fractals themselves are like puzzles, not just the boss having mechanics and annoying trash pulls you have Facebook your keyboard on like WoW or ff14.
Such a fun game! Can’t wait to get into raid. I’m going to go for that after I get a flying mount and unlock some of the masteries.

The open world sold me on the game and is still my favorite part. The event system makes the world feel more alive than some other games. For endgame content, I think pvp is fantastic and criminally underrated by players (perhaps due to being underserved by arenanet).
On the side I'm also aspiring to be the world's slowest and least focused completionist.

The open world + exploration + community is the things that keeps me playing. I haven't any other MMO that can deliver on these three together. Strangely most MMOs seem to focus their endgame on instanced content and neglecting the beautiful world you have visited while leveling... and speaking of leveling, because it is not part of the endgame you are usually on your own (unless you are riding a wave of new players, like when a new game releases).

As a player play GW2 when its release on Steam, I really like the open world, the jump puzzle where a number of people literally try their best or waiting for a portal, the meta events that's very fun, world boss kill squad that just roam tyria for loot and good times, random events in low lv area where Awaken pouring out of portal and a bunch of other player also pouring into the map to help etc.
I also like doing Fractal which is super fun and people in lfg is often very nice, someone literally gave me a +9 infusion because im so interested with the prospect of fractal and ascendant gear.
And the achievement, theyre pretty nice and hunting is frustrating and fullfil even just for a spoon, plus it doesn't require you to look up guides on how to get this thing and such often, which I really adore.
And the story is so good, it get to me when the fight against Zhaitan more ramp up, so many deads and poor choice of my own that makes me mad even tho it just an npc that with me for a couple mission.
Now im taking a break, because grinding towars gears kinda get the best of me.
Im also playing Destiny 2, and playing Guild Wars 2 makes me wish some of the stuff exist in that game.
Im glad that I tried GW2 even tho i know the time commitment that I will need to give in, i never regret it

One of the other nice things about the game that wasn't mentioned much here is that each of the 9 professions/classes (8 in the free version) plays very differently. Want a tool for each situation? Try Engineer (literally) or Elementalist (magically). Enjoy deceiving your opponents? Try springing from Thief's stealth or fooling them with Mesmer's clones. Want a pet by your side to assist you? Check out Ranger and their pet or Necromancer with their minions. Want to be the bulwark for your group? Bring a Guardian's blocks or Warrior's high armor and health rating. The weapon swapping mechanic allows you to bring both a melee and ranged weapon (or whatever combination you please) to the fight, in addition to the heal, utilities, and elite skill you choose of your profession's selection AND its profession mechanic. The dodge skill is also available to everyone and is key to surviving, alongside your heal skill. It has a very fluid combat system with a lot of options to choose from.

Yup, and this is one of the biggest reasons why I switched to GW2 from FF14. That game is suffering from a serious case of homogenization where any class within the same role (eg, melee dps) plays almost identical to each other. It's freaking boring. Playing different classes feel like you're just changing the animation skin. Theres no haste, no stealth, no stuns and slows, no interesting buffs, and zero character build customizability. In GW2? I opted for the mesmer because I've never seen any class like that in any MMOs I've played, and boy is it fun. I can even put portals! Literally no way that's gonna fly in FF14 where all the players will cry about a class being OP if it's even a tiny bit different from one another. It's so damn boring.

Glad to find this after just starting! I used to play guild wars in middle school and well.....now I'm 30 and finally playing the sequel. It's really fun so far! Everything seems to flow really nicely, the game looks and sounds great, and I'm excited to do and learn more. While it would break the bank for me right now, I think 100 bucks isn't so bad for all the content you get and it seems gw2 respects the money you spend without invalidating your time. Also I remember how much Blizzard hurt my/my parents wallet in high school so knowing you all got ten entire years with 100$ is quite a deal. It seems like this is a company that tries to respect their userbase and makes the experience playing a richer one over time, not reliant on punishing you for not throwing cash at it. Great video man!

Great video! I just returned to GW2 in Oktober, after not playing for almost 10 years. I don't know why I never carried on playing back in 2012, cause I was really hyped for the game initially. Well, glad I'm back now, thanks to a friend motivating me to try it again :) For me, the best things are horizontal progression and the events/quest style. With other mmos I felt so pressured to keep up to other people. In GW2, I just do what is fun, set my own goals and can still do endgame stuff and group events. And I'm really invested in the story and all the characters by now. I think it's the perfect game for working adults with a lot of other hobbies, that still want to play an mmo, invest time in progressing a character and a story, but still want it to feel relevent even if they can't play for a while. GW2 is perfect for that I think.

@@sadsylasmain7623 it's a vertical progression phone game called Monster Legends by Social Point.
You can play for free, but if you want to keep up at all, you need to be paying real money on monthly premiums, in game premium currency, and growth progression for this month's monsters to replace the old ones. Then paying for the upgrades for the monsters. If you want to help your team on a top team, that will essentially require real money. For a top 200 team, you could maybe get by on team stuff w/o anyone paying real money. But yeah, I ran a top 150 team and paying $50-100 and not even keeping up with half of the new stuff.
When I quit, they were adding more monthly premiums and more upgrade types needed to win. To have a big impact on a top team, I'm sure you could easily be paying over $1k USD a month. Don't pay or take some time off, you might miss a monster that makes the old monsters obsolete. So use your credit card and set your timers for every 8 hours or whatever to get back on your phone, so you don't fall behind.
(Can you hear my stress as I describe it? 😅 very glad GW2 is horizontal progression and most of the stuff is QOL or cosmetics I don't need but I want to.)

    • @ElDPRoberts
      @ElDPRoberts Рік тому

Oh and kindof like instance content in GW2, ML required group success. If someone didn't have good enough monsters and upgrades, didn't spend maybe hours per week planning strategy, or wasn't on their phone enough then the team struggled more and you personally might miss out on individual growth.
Out of my team of 30, we lost a couple per month due to retiring/cutting back and kicked a couple more for not meeting some basic time expectations so the team could meet the goals I promised my members we would meet. Couldn't enforce even basic game strategy (like not putting life upgrades on a power monster or if the strongest member on the team leave the easiest opponents for weaker teammates) or I would have had to kick almost half my team.
So trying to find the balance of how high of quality of people for team and members' individually success we could find without ruining the team and also trying to balance having a real life for us and them outside the game as well.

Just my five cents on one of the points you have mentioned:
In fact, GW2 was the first game where I experienced a huge FOMO - back in the days when Living World, Season1 hit.
This made me quit back in those days and go back to Guild Wars 1 - but luckily they overhauled their system for the followup-seasons.
I am basically in an on-off-relationship with GW2 since its' release, have all the expansions and LW-seasons unlocked and can very confidently say that GW2 is the best value game I've played.

For story nerds that want to immerse themselves a bit, here is some recap of Guild Wars 1 and setting the stage for Guild Wars 2:
    ua-cam.com/play/PLNIrrxKmHofwVUz0QQkRHh-eKgCTOF9dB.html +
    ua-cam.com/video/g35ug27Iz34/v-deo.html + ua-cam.com/video/O4c02x0h2U4/v-deo.html
Then I suggest to just try the free GW2 base game, earning ingame coin you can spend on gems (to unlock Living World story seasons) after Personal Story:
chapter 1 to 4. Setting the Stage + 30 Ascalonian Catacombs (first dungeon level, recommend you play this after the Personal Story chapter mentioned to the left of it)
chapter 4 + 48 Caudecus's Manor (the dungeons focus on Destiny's Edge, a group of dragon hunters that got famous sometime between the Guild Wars 1 and 2 games)
    chapter 5 + 55 Twilight Arbor
    chapter 6 + 63 Sorrow's Embrace
chapter 7. Forging the Pact + 70 Citadel of Flame
chapter 7 + 76 Honor of the Waves + 78 Crucible of Eternity
chapter 8. Victory or Death (arah story mode final dungeon, this is also where Destiny's Edge NPCs you met in previous dungeons come together for helping you)
After this you can proceed to Fractals of the Mists (a new kind of dungeon) and Living World season 2 then on to the first expansion and its Living World season, etc.
One thing to note: Lion's Arch (the capital city) used to look different during Personal Story before Living World, you will see this in some brown-colored flashback story missions. Ideally you would only see the old Lion's Arch until you actually finish Personal Story and the relevant Living World episodes, but I guess ArenaNet wanted to avoid world phasing.

The game isn't holding me hostage where I have to justify my time. The game is free of FOMO and allows me to do anything at any time. It also makes all progress feel worth it. I don't stop doing strikes or raids 4 months before an update because the new raid release will make my gear grind useless.
It doesn't in any way force me to play it, but I choose to because it's fun.
Also, just traversing and grinding in this game is fun. The mounts are amazing. Got my beetle 2 days ago so I got all mounts now.

But recently, I decided to give it another try and wow, what a difference! The game has improved so much over the years, with new content, features, and quality of life changes. I love exploring the beautiful world, doing dynamic events, crafting, and playing with my friends. The combat is still fluid and engaging, the story is intriguing and immersive, and the community is friendly and helpful. Just stumbled in to add my two coppers' worth. New player and tried the free trial and fell in love. Bought the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire Bundle and still not left the Core Map. My Necromancer is now a Power Reaper completing the Core Map like a murder hobo and I'm still getting enough Hero Points to unlock Shouts! But here's an example of what I LOVE.
New map area I want to clear and an Event is underway: taking out the Flame Legion. So my Reaper and Flesh Golem Minion go help protect the Char laying mortars at 6 sites. This chains to helping another Char lay 3 explosives to take out the walls. Chain to the Blood Legion charging in to take out 3 Shamen. Utter carnage ensues. Chains to the Big Bad Shaman at the top of the tower doing a Ritual. I charge up there and lay into him and he knocks me off the tower almost killing me. But the Golem is still up there fighting him so back up the stairs I go Shouting "Your soul is mine!" (Reaper Heal) and just manage to kill him before the timer ran out. No other players around, just me and NPCs.
That's what I love. Mission chains you can do alone with a real risk of failure. Seen others taking on such things and I've waded in to help. So if you're on an EU Server and spot a mad Human Reaper busting dance moves waiting for the next link in the mission chain that could be me. I'll get into the proper advanced stuff eventually (still need some Trinkets) but for now I'm happy running around Core like a hyperactive toddler and incidentally unlocking new Utilities. Unlike other MMORPGs I've played this game is not a chore. It's maddening, frustrating(looking at you, Jumping Puzzles) and confusing (why is the last Point of Interest in every Zone accessable only by a hidden underwater tunnel?!) but most of all it's FUN. Best £12.99 I've spent in years.

Adding in stealth to de-agro enemies and the ability to shadowstep makes it very good for world exploration. The only major downside to running that would be that you'd want a second build that's more suitable for group content and that would likely include different weapons. I've played almost every mmo under the sun.
There are many games that implement systems to force players into daily chores, never-ending gear treadmills and constant "Forced Balancing" to promote alt creation.
Guild Wars 2 respects your time with it's horizontal gearing systems. You can leave the game for a while and return and your items will still be relevant.
The community is very helpful and communicative. There are players that have open groups on LFG allowing players to join and teleport to them bypassing difficult jumping puzzles.
You can find many mesmer players helping new players with their portal to reach difficult locations when they don't have access to mounts yet.
It's also the only mmo where I truly feel that every map is alive with something going on at all times of the day and unlike majority of other mmos where it's just a means of levelling and never returning.
Some large maps are so big and structured to have multiple levels, you can sometimes find your-self lost and needing to way-point back if you don't have a skyscale or griffon mount.
Also this is the only game where mounts are more than a means of transportation and a necessity to completing some activities such as springer ground-pound ability for some heart activities or reaching other-wise unreachable restricted areas, such as the Jackal portals and roller-beetle breakable doors or just traversing dangerous terrain such as using a skimmer to float over quick-sand.
With the implementation of fishing in the latest expansion, players are now given a semi-afk low-intensity gold farming method for those that wish to multi-task other things.
All achievements, fashion, mounts and mastery levels are account bound making alts much less of a chore.
There are races which involve mounts of all types such as very fast drifting style racing with roller beetles, races with elevation with springer, underwater ones with skimmer, super-speed flying with griffon and many more.
There's so many hidden areas all over the game some you will find, how-ever most you will most likely miss unless you have a keen eye and spend time exploring.
The variety of activities that you do while levelling is diverse and unique from anything else I've played. Gone are the days of kill x amount of this or fetch x amount of these.
The large-scale events in this game, are truly 'Large-Scale'. Make sure to adjust your graphics settings accordingly because meta-events with full maps can get quite hectic.
Fractals [GW2 Mythic Dungeons] implements many other activities which require thinking and not just killing mobs, such as unlocking locked doors, dodging traps and jumping puzzles to list a few.
World vs World is the closest I've felt in an mmo to being in an actual large-scale war, you need to experience it to believe it.
PvP has it's ups and downs with constant balancing, but the great thing about PvP in GW2 is that you just need to complete the tutorial and you can start pvping straight away, you will be scaled to max level and all gear is equalized.
Raids and Dungeons are what you would expect from any typical mmo how-ever arena-net seems to have more focus towards other game-modes such as Strike-Missions and WvW at the moment.
Dungeons in GW2 are unique in a way that you can choose [vote for] multiple routes to complete the dungeons leading to different paths within the dungeon and culminating in a different boss fight at the end.
Strike Missions have been added recently and are basically Raids without the Mobs, basically boss-rush mode for players who a searching for difficult pve content but are short on time.
Every year there are festivals for every season that introduce even more large events and group social activities which players can participate in to earn unique rewards and fashion unlocks.
The mastery system in GW2 doesn't increase player power but rather quality of life improvements and accessibility of certain systems.
Fashion in GW2 is very diverse, I've seen almost perfect imitations of super-heroes, real life celebrities, cartoon characters, characters from other games and so many weird and wonderful looks. You can also dye your mounts to match your fashion as-well, leading to some epic looks while mounted.
With infusions you can modify your looks even further and create effects which complement your fashion.
You can be as dark as night itself or a walking disco-ball, most people tend to not go to those extremes but I have seen some looks that I can never forget.
GW2 is known in the mmo community as the game that does everything different, sometimes something different is what you need.

Anet is planning on adding many more smaller sized expansions and even more stories in GW2. I've been playing it since beta, escaping the WoW constant grind to the next level BS. I like the fact there is no subscription model and you have the option of purchasing what you want either with cash or in game gold and no pay to win feature either. Especially like accomplishing quests without having to do the old find the guy get the quest, do the quest, return to the guy to get the reward BS. The dynamic events are also great along with the metas. Been dabbling in WvW lately and the battles are fun. Those dynamic jumping puzzles are my weakness, but there are ways around them. Love the mounts (best of any game, period).

I'm kinda done playing the game and currently only logging in for dailies to eventually get all the account upgrades.
However it was a nice 1,5k ish hours that I don't regret.
The world exploration was what got me into it. It totally supports what I usually do in games (unlocking as many WPs as I can before doing anything else).
Getting the mounts was also cool. And I enjoyed the meta events a lot (fav one probably being Octovine or the DE meta).
I also really loved failing over and over on Soo Won right at the point of release. It was a fresh experience, because all the other content was so easy.
I genuinely loved the idea that you wouldn't just get everything for free.
It probably took me a good 20-30h getting the kill. But it felt rewarding.

And I didn't wanna do that. In the last few hours I basically just didn't progress anymore. I don't need the best of the best if that mean I've gotta do endless grind for a bit more visual effects or 2% better stats.
It's fine to enjoy your time, and stop once it's becoming more of a daily routine rather than the excitement you've had in the beginning.

Guild Wars 2 is a great MMO and anyone who likes MMOs or just open world games should give it a try. It has the best mounts in any MMO. I have nothing truly negative to say outside of its fading graphics. It's a solid game all around.
Your point on healing is moot. Almost every MMO I've played (ESO, SWTOR, NW, DCUO, and many more) has passive health regeneration out of combat and easy ways to manage healing. All those have a "down state" where you can be revived too.
You can't say GW2 doesn't have FOMO when if you miss a few months you lose out on a free story chapter and now have to buy it. If you play enough, too, you HAVE TO buy inventory space. Yes, GW does this sort of stuff better than most MMOs but it's not free of FOMO at all.
I played GW2 hard, reached endgame, and found myself bored by fractals and the rest. I also had no clue what sort of equipment I was supposed to get or how to get it. Personally, I love housing and that's where GW2 failed hard for me and ultimately made me move on to other games.

i played wow for 13 years.. i quit 2 years ago then spent a year trying new world, then final fantasy then i tried thhe free version of GW2 . around level 40 i knew it was my new favorite game and bought all the expansions . i love my reaper.... doing metas running around with tons of people killing dragons then next time i log in go beetle racing and its like a complete different game.....another day go do WVW and have a server pvp war.. I know im weird but i enjoy fishing in gw2 and will fish a 24 hour cycle and just chill. gw2 has tons to do keeping boredom away, its great the there's no need to race through content and i know my pink gear is no better or worse than anyone elses so its player skill and knowing your class that makes you good or bad.

    • @abree107
      @abree107  Рік тому

There are 3 builds that are in this video, all of which do a lot of damage. I will assume you are referring to the one with 2 pistols though. That clip was on a thief. The pistol-pistol deadeye build that I was using there is really straightforward and exceptional for solo open-world play because it has a lot of single target damage and generates a lot of its own boons. Adding in stealth to de-agro enemies and the ability to shadowstep makes it very good for world exploration. The only major downside to running that would be that you'd want a second build that's more suitable for group content and that would likely include different weapons. Pretty much all of the thief weapons are fun though. It's a class I've thought about getting into more than once.

1:04 there's one thing about it that isn't really true. I got my gf into this game recently and I didn't know that but she's got a Raptor on 10th level. The thing is it was locked behind a buff that lasted like 12h, so after 12h the game felt like a drag for her. Obviously this was made to make you purchase the DLC faster, but she really didn't like this aspect and who can blame her? This is a pretty reasonable "drop moment" if you ask me, especially considering how fun mounts are in this game. I know "back in the day" we had Raptors only after accessing PoF at lv 80, but now Arena allows new players to use Raptor from level 10 but only temporarily if they didn't pay which is lame imo.

THe Horizontal Progression is #1 reason for me why I play this game, or shall I say, why I CAN ONLY play this game. I have little time to play these days but I love the mmorpg genre. And most mmorpg games will require you to be online a lot. With GW2, I don't have problems with that since there's nothing really to catch up on.
All my chracters are on exotic gears only. I have 600+ hrs in the game but I have played zero fractals, zero strike missions and zero raids because I only do open world content and meta! An oh, I don't have friends to played with but I've NEVER felt alone since there are dynamic events in the Open World and help is often times just a one map chat away.
This is what Abree was exactly saying in the video - You can craft your own end game that best suits your lifestyle. This is why I'll be forever fan of GW2. This is why I'll forever recommend GW2 to others.

It was devastating for most of the players in the trilogy GW1 of all 3 campaigns. They were made to believe GW1 could link the storage items and achievements into GW2. Instead, the early beta & play of GW2 looked like a mockery remix of WoW & GW1 combo.

Well, I love vertical or however you say it progressing like WoW's got, but honestly, it quite doesn't fit GW2 ngl, there's SO MANY classes that gets switched around, some nerfed some oldies getting buffed and becomes FOTM, so having this kind of progressing is actually 10/10 also, if I feel like going for something cool etc for ascended gear, i can grind out the cool ass looking legendary armor and weapon skins, etc, etc.
GW2 is definitely a "must play" imo, people saying it's dead is just blinded by some streamers who thinks the same, basically their viewers just being sheeps.
Games ALIVE and you'll ALWAYS find people going around cus of meta and random bosses that spawns across tyria.

The best part of gw2 in my opinion is the different "playstyles" of the game it self. I love MMOs but a lot of them are very grindy so you get burnt out quickly. Some of them have way too much content that is either irrelevant or in even worse case, everything is important so u're either lost or it's too daunting. Some games are too casual to be fun. Also dailies in most of the games are mandatory if you wanna have any progress whatsoever. PvP is often imbalanced in a way that u pretty much get gear carried half the time. In gw2 its a combination of everything regarding content, the game is super balanced in any way. The end game is vast yet there is no pressure on you to do it all, i have about 500hrs in game and i did only 2 raids till now. The game is not p2w, you can play casually or hardcore grindy. The PvP aspect of the game is also very fun since in the arena, your main gear has no value and in open world WvW you can just run cheap exotics and still have fun. Overall best ROI when it comes to MMOs
Also you can buy gems with gold and get living world seasons that way

"Supports in Guild Wars 2 aren't something you just throw your friend on because they're not very good at the game yet." Not unless you want to make the game experience artificially difficult, at least. Supports are generally what more skilled players are on to carry the noobs. Anybody can eventually do enough damage to kill the monster as long as somebody who knows what they're doing is keeping them alive while they bang on it. Conversely, in most endgame content (raids, strikes, high tier fractals) the supports are the one or two players who can most often cause a total wipe by screwing up all on their own.
