He's bloody stupid as well (I know we all know that). Sanctions have basically disintegrated the Russian economy, currency, and markets in 2 days. I believe day 1 of the invasion wiped $250 billion from the Russian economy & it has plummeted more every day.
As far as "the opposite of smart" 🙄, sanctions are isolating Putin even more than he already was among ordinary Russians.
They oppose the war.
They want democracy.
Sanctions will hurt them first - no money, no food, no jobs, no economy. Plus no travel, no football (ie soccer - these sanctions are a big deal, Americans 😉), no social life etc.
This affects ordinary citizens... then military...
