  • This video features a bunch of single hand Skagit casts from Ben Paull of Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics. Ben lays out the case for using Commando Heads on single hand rods: they're fun, you can cast them almost anywhere, they're an affordable introduction to Skagit casting, you can fish big flies on light rods, you can make a variety of casts, and they are easier on your joints than overhead casting. If you want to experience trout fishing in a whole new way, then check this video out. For rod and line recommendations for any trout rod you already own or are thinking of owning, give us a call or email at info@opskagit.com or 206-858-8476.

    Have been using your single hand commando heads on my 6 wt rods for the past few years on my home waters in SW Montana and Idaho . It’s Game changer . There is something hypnotic about casting the line that you just can’t explain . I also use your heads on my two handed rods and now a 4wt trout Spey . Great product

    I agree with all the positive qualities you mentioned. the fun factor is not to be overlooked.... these setups are game chngers. I call it my 'cheater'. on Vancouver Island you almost never have back cast options. Can you tell I like it? Bravo OPST.

    Magnet box in the frame with a spare key is a life saver. I locked myself out of my car in the middle of nowhere in 15 degree weather and had to break a window. No cell service. Drove right to an auto zone and got a frame magnet.

    That is so perfect. After watching this I keep wondering why everyone is not using this system. Are there disadvantages to the commando heads or situations where you can't use them?

    Thanks for a great video Ben. Question for you. I assume the shooting line does not float? Also....I noticed someone online talking about using Berkley big game mono for the shooting line. Would you please cover the pros and cons to OPST shooting line vs the Berkley mono method? Thank you so much. Shane

    • @OPSkagit
      @OPSkagit  Місяць тому

      The shooting line floats. The Lazar Line has less memory than Big Game and has a better-calculated stretch. Any memory is easily stretched out of the Lazar Line, and it has a hydrophobic coating that increases durability, float, and shoot ability.

    You cast very nice with that setting of line, a fishing friend of mine bought this commando lines and he is very satisfied with them but I have still question, in river you don´t need that very long cast because the fish is there near you but in lake I wonder if this line works when you fish from the banks?

    how do these line perform on glass rods? Will the whole setup run well on a Blue Halo 7wt for steelhead. I'm looking to make a trip to the PNW this summer and plan on bringing that rod and am really interested in the commando heads to go with it.

  • @michaelragsdale4797

    I saltwater fish in central Florida and love the the whole shooting head--minimal false casting. I'm somewhat new to fly fishing but far enough along to find myself wanting a faster way to get a fly to a redfish on the mosquito lagoon flats. What do you suggest I use with my 8wt streamer setup?

  • @kristianbarajas644
    @kristianbarajas644 7 років тому

    9ft, 6wt med-fast action rod. Primarily dry dropper setup since I'm new to fly fishing. What would you recommend? I fish the Oregon Willamette and Deschutes river tributaries most often with very little backcast space. So second question, I've been considering single handed spey but what makes the micro skagit unique?

      It can be a bit awkward but if you set yourself up for a drift and then stash your oars to the side it's alright. I wouldn't recommend it with big fish though.

    Basically it’s a shooting head. We use to have to make them back in the day. But of course we didn’t have So called. Running line. We used monofilament. Which kinda sucked. But. All this is nothing new. Really. But it’s still cool

    Is there any [real] reason why one can't just insert the Skagit head between my existing floating running line and my tippet? ...to save money. Thx.

    • @jamesmillard5216
      @jamesmillard5216 4 роки тому +1

      Ole Rea yes unfortunately that will badly overload your rod. Your floating fly line has a running line, weight forward head-like taper and a forward presentation tip. You would then be adding a much heavier Skagit style line to that. Your floating Line is three parts Integrated together. Ours is three parts with a different forward taper. They are both complete lines meant to be used on their own.

    • @oleinfidel
      @oleinfidel 4 роки тому

      Hi James - thx for the reply. So you are saying that [in adopting the Skagit line] I need to replace my forward weight floating running line with what ?

    What kind glass rod were you using? (would like to give a glass rod a try) Is there an impact to the using a 25lb lazer versus a 35lb on a 9ft 5wt. My current setup is a 9ft 5wt 25lb laser , commando with 5 ft opst floating tip.
