- What if for 12 hours a year, there were no laws across the US? This is the scenario in the Purge film series, but I ask, what if the Purge was actually policy in the US? Here is one scenario.

I never understood why the movie doesn't include theft. That would be the number 1 thing that would actually happen. Banks would be fucked.
I'm pretty sure that I heard somewhere that in the movies it says in a scene that banks move the money so banks wouldn't be targeted.

Every time I think about stories like this, I always wonder: "How does the rest of the world react?" The USA is not an island unto itself - you'd think someone in Europe, Russia, China, let alone the immediate neighbours of Canada and Mexico would either object or exploit the chaos to their benefit. Hell, what about international crimes committed during the Purge? What about potential tourists caught in the crossfire? Does one seriously think the other nations wouldn't raise hell if their own got massacred (literally and otherwise) because of stupid homeland policy?
China and USSR killed tons of people for real reasons and not because "lol no law in effect this night". Soviets killed political opponents and criminals that were viewed as harmful to the state. Chinese killed tons of people in a famine as China needed to industrialize quickly and the famine was caused by the inudstiralization.
So none killed their population just because and purge wouldn't have any good effect on either of the countries.
Actually in that universe many European countries seeing the success of the purge in the us wanted to do the same up until the forever purge

Dunno whether you've heard of a fairly recent game named 'Hatred'. It is likely about as close as we will get to an all out 'Purge' game. I doubt that a game where reckless violence and brutal murder of innocents is not met with any form of law retaliation would ever be green-lighted and published. The funny thing about the 1% is that if you kill off the bottom 99% there's just a recalculated ratio of what the top 1% represents. Furthermore, with less people in which to trade goods, that money you have is worth less.
And who the hell is going to work for the 1% as well now? Walmart would just instantly lose a bunch of its employees and even for minimum wage workers, replacing them all is still costly.

Not really supplies and demand would actually make them earn less.
Isn't it more likely that it would be the top 1% who get targeted? And if they hire people to protect them, those armed guards could just kill their employers during the Purge. Remember, all crime is legal that day.
@@stevenc.6502 The advantage of being in the top 1% is that you can afford things like bunkers or vacations to countries with different laws or bunkers in safer countries. Even if, in practice, you could target the wealthy it's not likely to succeed unless they are the type to partake in the event themselves.
Plus, in real life, most people aren't interested in theft or murder. It's why we have social contracts to prohibit such behavior. If a group of politicians actually legalized such things they wouldn't be representing the majority opinion.
It's only in situations of extreme poverty or supply shortages that people act out and even then it's only to survive. For example, I recall a case of armed robbery where, when the guy realized how little cash was kept in the drawer he gave it back and apologized. Then he explained his child will die without an expensive medical procedure and that's why he did it. That's the kind of motivation most would have to actually participate and that would make the property of the wealthy potential targets, but since these are usually otherwise good people they aren't likely to be very violent.
There would be some people who would take advantage of the situation who would be violent, but chances are high that these types of people would die very quickly robbing the wrong person. Heck, if all crime is legal, then it means the rich could install auto firing turrets which is otherwise illegal.
In any case I'm inclined to believe that not only would the upper 1% be able to remove themselves from the situation, but they'd have defenses most wouldn't which would make them less likely to be targeted.

I felt the idea of a Purge is amazing but I couldn't take the films as seriously for having the story set in the US, I feel it would've been best the writers created a fictional country, modeling only *some* things from America, that would've been interesting. Also if this was set in a fictional place, it'll be easier for international viewers to connect. Because I'm sure people outside the States were probably like:

I’ve thought about this and what I would do during a purge. It’d take a little investment (and two people) but would be well worth it (still using no explosives, per the rules). Purchase an armored vehicle or vintage tank (with cannon rounds, for use on any overly thick steel walls/doors), map out specific pawn shops and jewelers (no banks), and only take gold and silver (when possible). After around 6 hours of this, you’d likely have around $10-$20 million (estimated) of tradable wealth, as long as you can hit about 3 per hour. There would obviously also be diamonds and other stones mixed in, as you can’t remove the stones when you’re stealing the gold they’re attached to. One guy provides cover fire and the other loads the tank. Split it 2 ways then retire forever. If for some odd reason all these businesses deposited their metal and stones in a bank or repository for the purge night, it’d take a bit more planning, but it’d still be doable with the tank, a few cannon rounds and commercial cutters (with a lot less stops too, as you’d only need one vault). And pick a rural one, as the others would be overrun. I only need one purge.
