      MarzK423 Slav actually comes from a Slavic word, "slovo" meaning "word". They called each other Slavs, because they could understand each other and had the same language (at least in the start). Similar in many Slavic languages the word for German; Niemcy is from the word "nyem" meaning "deaf". This is because they couldn't understand the Germans.
      To further prove my point, the Latin word for slave is completely different. The Latin word for slave is servus also meaning servant..

      It wouldn't, his role has been overly exaggerated in the West, pretending you admire Petrov while in actuality spitting on Russia. There was a whole chain of command, someone would notice "Americans wouldn't launch only four nukes on us, and this system is new and still in the beta phase"

    • @alwy781
      @alwy781 3 роки тому +19

      @Robert Ortiz-Wilson Petrov didn't obey the chain of command at that time, so he was fired from the military. Though any suspicious launch against USSR would be taken seriously as it was during Reagan's Anti Communist policy, and that 'empire of evil' which where world tension skyrocket.

      @Damocles16 2 роки тому +3

      @Robert Ortiz-Wilson Well, we do know that Petrov simply reported on what he saw on his screen : 4 icbm incomming ! then he added what everybody else whould have thought : It has to be a mistake.
      And we know that it was enough for the strategic command to standby, and eventually dismiss the whole thing. Ultimately it was up to them and USSR officials usually cared little for what a low ranking officer had to say ! Petrov's instinct would be secundary.
      And I still don't answer your question 😅 but that makes sense...

    Petorv rationale was that America wouldn't launch one, two or three missiles. From a strategic point that's illogical. So he gambled that the system, which was brand new, was defective. Dire Straights would never had made “Money For Nothing”

    Those 30 seconds with the emergency alert system going off and the explosions getting closer gave me chills. I have nightmares of World War 3 and some of them have been like this, emergency alert system on TV while the nuclear bombs make those 600+ mph winds that wipe out my home and the entire area around it (Seattle), and hearing that EAS alarm turning into static.

      * Those Russian men. There was Petrov, and then there was Vasili Arkhipov. Arkhipov was on a Soviet nuclear sub around Cuba in October 1962. The sub had lost radio contact with Moscow, so when they were attacked with depth charges, protocol stipulated that 3 keys had to be turned to launch the nukes. 2 agreed to do that, but Arkhipov didn't. He is basically the reason why the Cuban Missile Crisis never got hot (apart from JFK removing nukes from Turkey and whoever-was-in-charge-of-the-USSR removing nukes from Cuba). So we should thank both of them for what they did(n't) do.

    If I remember correctly, Petrov thought it was ridiculous that an attack on Russia would use so few missiles. I think the radar indicated the missiles came from a direction that didn't make sense. I also think there were other layers of detection you would wait for confirmation from. 1983 was also the same year the NATO ran the Able-Archer military exercise that the Russians feared was a pretense for an actual attack so I believe the Russians showed an amazing amount of restraint that year.
