Possibly the most unrealistic thing of The Purge is that it presents a scenario where it's every man for himself. That's not how humans operate. We're a strongly social species, so if The Purge was a thing, people wouldn't huddle in their homes hoping for the best; People would organize weeks if not months in advance. Neighbourhoods would stablish a more or less regulated militia, barricades would be erected and strangers would be expected to stay the fuck out on pain of death. Also, police and soldiers who took their job seriously would simply be out and about as civilians acting almost like The Punisher, which would paradoxically make The Purge the most dangerous day of the year to actually commit any crime; These vigilantes would shoot first and ask questions never.
Far from being a "do whatever the fuck you want" day, it would be a "you best stay on your very best behaviour or you'll get shot in the head" day, which kinda defeats the purpose.
It'd just be an apocalypse for a day

Actually, the idea of “be nice or else” could be potent. Think about it, nearly the entire populous can basically become a police officer/vigilante one night of the year, it’s just a question of how willing are they to go after those who wronged them. Crime would go down significantly if criminals knew that the crimes they did could very easily put a massive target on their back

Cody's just talking about how shitty a purge act would do for the economy and lives of the people. However, even if people like him and I hate the purge due to its ridiculous setting, it's still interesting nonetheless. Take The Walking Dead, do you really think those slow shambling undead can really infect a lot of people if they're three times slower than you average human just walking around? Great TV Show for sure, but realistic zombie apocalypse scenario? Not much.
I am sure the people involved in the making of the Purge know how bat shit insane it is, so I doubt they mind Cody's input.
This is mostly meant to show teenagers what the purge would really do, so they can stop fantasizing about it being a real scenario and to realize how destructive it'd be. Also to dismiss the argument of blaming over population for everything related to incorrect distribution of resources.

Another thought, the US would also be very vulnerable to foreign invaders on purge night. If someone infiltrated power plants there would be chaos. All the foreign power would have to do is take the major cities.

He made some good points, but I'm kinda surprised he didn't talk about the potential of a terrorist attack. Imagine sleeper cells armed, trained, and directed by a foreign entity activating on purge night and wreaking havoc upon US infrastructure and industry. We'd be completely helpless because they can't be prosecuted or even investigated.

I live in a town of 20,000 in Nebraska. If the Purge happened here, half of the town would be out on the streets with their guns helping uphold what would be on other days the law. Just because the laws go away doesn't mean people's morals do.

I think one of the movies sets out the fact that initially, people are quite hippy peaceful during the purge. Getting drunk and high, partying etc. But the government initiate violence to encourage vendettas and thus make everyone more violent. Dumb logic I know.

1) The day of the purge is known, so most sensible businesses would close down days if not weeks before the purge. Valuable inventory would be shipped to Mexico/Canada for temporary storage. Less valuable inventory would be sold out/not replenished in the weeks leading up to the purge. The most you could steal from walmart/banks are probably pens and gum. Large industrial sites like oil refineries would be shut down, and emptied of dangerous substances. Sabotaging an oil pipeline would be bad, but wouldn't lead to the catastrophic damage suggested here.
2) Most capital intensive businesses would die. Nuclear power plants/Intel chip manufacturing/etc take years to break even. If it can't turn a profit before it's burned to the ground, nobody will try it. This is probably the part that will hit the economy the hardest.
Yeah the purge would destroy business. How could a business trust anyone to guard their store or warehouse on purge night? The guards could steal with impunity too.

You forget new problems create new solutions and jobs. Ex military would finally have nice employment. Those multimillion and billion dollar companies would certainly shell out 200 million to a team of 25 discharged marines, they would certainly take the money to work for 1 day a year

Something that makes the idea improbable is that just because you make something legal, doesn't mean people will go around killing others. Yes there would be a lot of dead people, but I don't think people would actually kill to drain hate to others.
I think a lot of homeless would get killed that night. People really really hate the homeless but have something to lose. If you gave them the freedom to wipe out the homeless, you would see a lot of them dying. It would be a net positive for society.

I'm surprised nobody ever talks about the Mexican and Canadian borders during a Purge scenario. For one thing, tons of people would probably seek safety from the Purge by leaving the US for the night and coming back once it was over, so there'd be huge traffic jams preceding and following the Purge every year. And during the actual Purge, would leaving/entering the US without going through immigration be legal too? Is it legal to shoot bullets across international borders and kill people on the other side? If you break the law in Mexico/Canada, are you safe if you cross over into the US during the Purge? If you kill a citizen of another country on US soil during the Purge, is that still legal, or could you be arrested for murder by said country once the Purge ended?
I had to scroll so far down for this that I legitimately thought not a single comment said this. Also I'm pretty sure you'd still be in the jurisdiction of whatever country you're in while you're there, it's just you may also need to follow some us laws in addition to that. While detaining us citizens may cause tensions, I dont think they'd stand for widespread murder.

They created fake Facebook accounts to do advertisements on fake meetings and fake rallies, then they hacked the ballots in eight states, which Illinois officially declared that. Then Trump got elected. Before the election, Putin himself said that he would declare World War 3 on America if Hillary Clinton gets elected as president. So technically Putin is using Trump as his own puppet (without Trump even realizing that it's happening) in a way that America would be destabilized and so when the perfect time happens, he would invade North America and after that settle a colonial regime (assuming Canada would also be invaded as they would take action to defend America)

I always wondered, despite it being a rule that people can’t kill gov officials during the purge, what’s to stop them? I guess the NFF would have security with them, but throw enough people at them that could fail and they can’t exactly call the police or national guard. Also what’s to stop military leaders from staging a coup during the Purge since any civilian law enforcement couldn’t resist them?
You overestimate how many people would organize to siege a heavily fortified politician's home.
Pretty much the senate and members of the house would get wiped out entirely, a lot of people would go for them first. Unless they're really really hidden, or not in the country. Yeah, thinking about it, the entire gov and rich would probably just flee the country the week before the purge. I never seen the movie, do people just leave the country before the purge to avoid it?

While the worst problem would be purely economical, cause even prior to the purge stocks would plummet. I mean just having a bill in congress to approve it would start to shake otherwise strong stocks as investors get worried. (the fact that it reached that point would be worrying enough) so I would say it doesn't even have to start before America's economy is in ruins.

Charlie Kelly King of Rats well I lived there my whole life so I can't say I don't like my country and that doesn't have any good left because the truth is Venezuela is a really beautiful country with mountains, forests, rivers, towns, cities and mostly really kind people, but what is really sad is that this "socialist government" (as they called themselves but to me is more like communism) ruined the country and turn it into a poor nation, making people to starve to death, making the soldiers to hurt us when we don't speak good of the government, people who used to be good turned into thieves because they don't have enough money to buy food to their families, it felt so bad it felt like we didn't have any freedom at all, like being in a prison without being in one. But even if Venezuela right now is in anarchy with a dictator that destroyed our economy and the beauty of my country I still hope that one day democracy shall come again and with it a great leader to make our nation great again as in the past.

Aiden Campbell it's okay maybe not so many people in Venezuela understands but I kinda understand why no one help us. First of all USA can't just declare war on Venezuela or try to kill Maduro because well Chavez (the other man before Maduro that took power until he died from cancer) made some relations with the Chinese and Russians so probably if a war between the US and Venezuela happens China or Russia might get involved and Maduro is keeping those relations but eh who knows maybe the Russians or the Chinese wouldn't risk a WW3 just for Venezuela. Second of all the UN doesn't want USA to invade Venezuela cause that wouldn't help the country at all and as painful as it sounds they are kinda right, because just think about it, Venezuela a country with no war nor armed conflict but still people are dying from starvation and anarchy, then goes to a war against a super power we wouldn't last a month, that will just make our economy drop faster than ever and the situation even worse and probably they won't let anybody to leave Caracas or even the country. But well who knows maybe non of this things would happen if the US tries to invade Venezuela, maybe they'll just land in there and kill Maduro and all those assholes in the government in just some week, maybe the soldiers will surrender after seeing those American flag in the horizon, maybe the people would join the Americans in the fight, only God knows what would happen, but hey isn't that how history works?, there are a lot of "if" in history like, I don't know, what if Chavez never came to power? What if war on terror never happen? What if Latin America was united? Is the beautiful thing about history it can tell us about what will happen in the future or what will become in the future and we an even ask ourselves what would happens if it wasn't like this but like that and that kind of stuff (one of the reasons I found this UA-cam channel I actually love history and alternate history). In my opinion I think if someone tries to help Venezuela it could go well or bad, we will never know until someone does it, but let me tell you something, Venezuela won't be like this for much longer I know something will happen, i know this will change, I just don't know when will happen but until that day comes and Venezuela could be a good country again, Venezuela may resist. Anyway don't be sorry about the US or any European government that doesn't want or can't come to help us there are plenty of reasons about why no one helps Venezuela, maybe one day someone will come and free us but eh, as I said history have a lot of "if" so for now we will have to wait. You know, I came up with an interesting alternative here...
So, something that could happen is the formation of militias. After the first couple disastrous purges, neighborhoods of innocent people with guns would unite to form a paramilitary force. Every purge, this little army would guard homes, power plants, and other important buildings, and defend them from the psychopaths who want to kill and destroy as much as possible. I think this would happen because during the first couple purges, many people would lose friends and family, and maybe some of them will be hurt enough to decide to unite and try to keep order. Others would be disgusted with the immorality of the people in the purge, and they would also be motivated to stop it. Anyone hurt by the purge with a support system behind them would join this new group. As this group grows more powerful, running advertising campaigns before every purge, it would grow bigger, and eventually, as people united into neighborhood defense groups, and then into towns, cities, states, and eventually the country, the purge would become more of a national defense drill than a simple anarchy/population control scheme. It would lead to the creation of a second, seasoned army, an ultra militia, that would specialize in defense from conventional attack.
That’s just my thoughts though, what do you guys think?

Cody didn't mention the fact that, even if Americans didn't start a god damm insurrection after the proposal of any scenario resembling the purge, America would almost certainly be invaded and conquered by the sane nations of the world. Even Canada or Mexico alone could conquer all of America in that kind scenario. And even if America's sworn enemies invaded during purge night, they would definitely be greeted, by the vast majority of Americans, as liberators freeing them from fascist tyranny. Also, FYI, at least half of the US population would flee the country, causing the largest refugee crisis in history, and giving the world another reason to liberate America.
As a Canadian, our entire military is a Moses strapped with enough c4 to leave a small crater. I’m pretty sure we couldn’t conquer America even if it was in the middle of the purge

Looking over this three years later as a high school student, I think many people would just be working together and stealing tons of money and then the next day using it to pay off tuition, mortgages, etc.

When he started talking about Power Plants, I'm amazed he didn't talk about the absolute disaster that an attack on one of the Numerous Nuclear plants in America would be. Imagine if there was a potential for a Chernobyl-like event every year.
