I'm Nigerian and I've often wondered about this lol. Great video I hope this doesn't get too much hate. Really shows the selfishness of humans regardless of colour
I disagree, I think that the industrial revolution would’ve came earlier. The reason why I think that is because labor would have been more expensive without slavery therefore prompting cheaper ways to produce. And there is nothing like profits and desperation as a motive to seek innovations
@@TRUEROOTS2022 capitalisms were already forming before black slavery But it is possible that capitalisms does not form in the new world but unionism or syndicalism which would be more effective then capitalisms and less wasteful..
without slavery the global giants at the time would not have been able to make as much money as they did, therefore they would not be able to invest in any inventions and, those inventors would've gone bankrupt. which means we would be living in a alien world. (great argument though :D )
However, a change that great in the timeline (as Cody pointed out) would almost certainly mean that someone else, not Cody would be talking about if African slavery in the New World had happened. Too many changes over too many centuries would change too many lives for Cody or even his great great grandparents to have been born.
Shit! we are working everyday for slave wages, they just call it "gainful employment" instead of slavery. use up till our back gives out and tossed out like a used tissue.
This video was actually under one my history teacher assigned me. In class he also explained how important slavery was. It's crazy to believe but holy cow remove one card and the entirety of history changes, it's so fascinating
@@nevaehhamilton3493 why would I be outraged? He basically taught us the same thing Alternate History did. Slavery wasn't a good thing at all, however if you took slavery out of the early world it would have crashed.
@@razortheonethelight7303 no I think there is a middle ground. That literarlly every country on earth has issues and has had them. But in reality the United States is the greatest. There isn’t a country better for black people, woman, and people in general on earth.
Glad somebody's asking the important questions in life. I'll wager there'd be some really cool car chases. Imagine a bank robber leaping out of the getaway car, chugging a red bull, and flying away with a bag full of cash, but the cop leaps out too, so now they're both flying through the sky, but everyone would be flying and... well I don't know, but it'd be awesome.
Red Bull would never be sold to the public and would be mass produced and sold to a selected nation; Perhaps NATO, Heavy limitations for civilian use alongside foreign espionage of the RB Company to the point where every large scale military nation has access.
I believe without slavery in the timeline you mentioned it would have potentially started the industrial revolution earlier as the under population to farm the crops would potentially force Europe to mechanize earlier
That’s an excellent point, actually. Less workers could force people to invent ways around slow production. But I think that they’d need to suddenly lose a decent portion of the workforce, increasing the need for workers or something that could replace them Maybe once the native people died off enough in the Caribbean, then people would’ve innovated ways to keep production up
. The overt belief in a feudal system vs capitalist was fed by the availability of slaves. Without this free labor the South would have more open to the idea of making "dirty, common money"
Another thing I think is discounted is that the industrial revolution has a decent chance to actually spread into Africa. Europe and Africa in this alternative industrialization period would likely have similar politics, populations, and by some extent, resources. The only thing that would facilitate such a spread would be either reverse engineering of industrial tech by west Africans, or the Ottoman Caliphate also industrializing in turn, both of which have some credence in otl. For example, the Ashanti Empire were notoriously difficult to conquer for the British because they had large supplies of dutch weapons and ammo, and were evenly matched with English troops. The British only were able to conquer their lands once the repeating rifle was invented.
Trampy Gamer Yup, but would it be called something else? Like, "What if capturing Minorities existed?" Although, if the video was what I called it would probably get a lot of backlash because the minority would be offended by the idea of working at a command, being unable to quit, and working for free, since it would be a rather rare or new idea.
You didn't get into music being completely different. No slave songs, means no spirituals, blues, ragtime, jazz, rock, rap, etc. The banjo wouldn't have even been invented so bluegrass/country would have not been the same.
That's highly unlikely considering that jazz, Hip Hop and rap, and Afro-Caribbean musical styles were a direct response to slavery. These musical forms were an expression of freedom, which unlikely would have been created without the catalyst of slavery. To your point, I would argue that there would have been alternative forms of music that would have developed, but they would lack the cultural responsiveness and edginess of Black music today. Listen to Lupe Fiasco's "All Black Everything" if you haven't already. I like the alternate timeline where slavery never happened, and the Beastie Boys Eminem invented rap and then inspired Tupac Shakur. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
We could have made the music in Africa, everyone gets the blues sometime. I've been to Africa, they are very spiritual. The music goes with us, like our style, the way we walk, the way we wear our hair. It's who we are, what we are made of, it's in our soul. It's not the place we live, it's the people we are. My family has been here since 1670's and your saying that the U.S. needed slave to produce good music, is an insult!
Rapper Lupe Fiasco actually took this concept to a whole other level and made a concept album where instead of the slaves being shipped to America in the slave trade, their ships crashed and became these protectors of the sea called the Long Chains
Yea, the Far Right wing of America has taken over the internet forums, boards and comment sections. So they're gonna say the most vile racist shit you'll ever hear. They'll use to to say "you deserve to be treated like shit you n-word" and you can never convince them otherwise.. They're the fucking zerg man.
Danie F things would be very different. Alot of inventions and records would've never been invented. Alot of companies wouldn't exist. Obama would've never become president. It's a serious butterfly effect.
As an AA, I have at times wondered about this idea myself. Slavery was never solely about racism. It was about MONEY, whether for the Europeans, the colonists, or the African traders. Forced free labor was needed to facilitate the whims of people with no work ethic. How long those people thought that system would last is a question for the ages. Well we know at least one white person actually considered the alternative. Interesting. Thanks for thinking.
@King Of the krispy because Africans were an easy target; you had kings who were eager to sell them off, while no European king would have sold his own people into slavery

A little late, but the video itself is mainly focusing on the African slave trade, rather than the relations between the Europeans and the natives. He did state that the natives would basically go through a similar process of dying out in the Caribbean
If Natives are used for slave labor instead there would be incentive to keep them alive and increase their population, and the North-South war would lead to them being freed and overall a much bigger part of post-colonization America and its culture.
@@ultrafire5330 I mean if you consider this a "video that teach you things" I first disprove your comment and I wouldn't be suprised if xanthous fish jeretuna was a leftist as well given their comment. Are you xanthous?
It's possible the Europeans would have recruited Indian and Chinese labourers to work the plantations, as happened after the end of slavery. Perhaps the cultures of Brazil and the Caribbean would have strong Southeast Asian influences instead of African ones. New Orleans might be known for its bhangra music scene, instead of jazz.
If you look at the Caribbean we actually have a strong Asian influence. Many persons are of East Indian descent--especially in Trinidad and Guyana. Popular dishes like Curry Chicken, Curry Goat, roti and callaloo are heavily drawn from Asia. Also, the use of ganja/marijuana for spiritual and medicinal purposes amongst a host of many other things. :)
If we're talking music? It should be stated that a lot of what we think of as African-American music (jazz, rnb, rock and roll, etc) took heavy influences from different European-American music styles as well as that of some indigenous American groups sometimes, and it might be that such styles would've developed anyways but with varying kinds of 'ethnic' slants. Maybe Ritchie Valens esque Latino rock (which does share a ton with classic Chuck Berry style rock n roll) would've been one of the defining cultural trends of the 50s and 60s, say, instead.
China was fairly strong in the 15th-16th century, so instead of taking labor from there, I reckon that China would have had to modernize to meet the challenge from the West in Southeast Asia. This could have led to China dominating much of this region.

U know I’m black and uhh I actually really love to talk about these kinds of hypotheticals the what if’s of slavery is interesting and I also like to point out that literally every race on our great green earth has been enslaved in some form or fashion
Yes, even today alot of people are enslaved, but blind to the eye of the government. East Europeans white women for example, are trafficked into slavery in the west. All under our very noses.

The penalty for their crimes in the South was death, so what if the Union had done the right thing, and tried, convicted, and executed all the Americans who were involved in the horrible practice of slavery ???
The reason its "controversial" is because there will always be some of those people who'd just any excuse to act the victim, I'm not saying that the fact your race was exploited in the past is good (slavery, racism and prejudice and such disgust me) but the fact that you're using that as an excuse to do something today is just plain stupid, it's all in the past, its history not society today so don't think its a valid excuse Sorry for the slight rant there Edit: if you're going to reply to this, at least bother reading my other comments In short, I'm not downplaying the acts against a race nor saying that there aren't still existing issues as of it, I am merely just stating we should be able to freely discuss history of controversial topics. I think you did the best you could do with this topic. And you didn't give any "happily ever after" bullshit which I appreciate. I honestly don't think America as we know it would exist without the Trans-Atlantic African slave trade. It definitely wouldn't be an economic super power strong enough to maintain itself without Britain's financial support. And I don't think a lot of early colonial Europeans would have survived long enough on the North American continent to create permanent settlements. I'd be interested if you did this same type of concept video only instead of African slavery, you do Native American genocide.
Brittany Wilkins I see what you are saying but I would have to strongly disagree with your assessment. After the discovery of the Americas, the Irish were taken from their home land and put into indentured servitude. If it weren't African slavery it would have been a slavery of a different group. Maybe the slav's or the natives but one thing I can say for sure is that wherever there's a potential for profit, every route to it will be explored. The worst thing would be that if African slavery Never existed Africa wouldn't have any export and would have possibly used up all natural resources and starvation would run rampant. Just my thoughts
Enslaving slavic folks like me proved a big mistake. Slavs always come back for the win. And no, I'm not a white nationalist slav.....just proud of my Polish heritage. A nation of survivors.
Who Pooped In The Pudding? Can't argue with that. I'm Irish and enslaving them turned out to be a bad idea as well with the invention of the IRA. All this is beside the point. My only point was that if it's not one group it would be another group. When powers collide, the greater power will enslave the other in one way or another. My intent wasn't to downplay the Slavic people or the African people or any other people but to point out the nasty side of human nature
you didn’t mention convict labour like they had in Australia after slavery got abolished. if they had turned their back on slave labour and had convict labour there would have been no civil war for a start.
The US did convicted labor literally right after slavery it's called peonage. They'll walk up to a random black teenager and say "you owe me money" and then use their friends and buddies to make the person legally liable for a fictitious debt and boom chaingangs..
Enclave Soldier States rights, cultural differences, and economic differences were also reasons for the Civil War, but, slavery was the main reason without a doubt. The Confederacy’s economy was solely reliant on slave labor. If it disappeared the entire southern economy would crash forcing plantation owners into financial ruin. The south already had a substantial wealth gap with the large plantation owners having most of the money, their downfall would’ve meant everybody’s ruin. The Confederacy had everything to lose when it came to the abolishment of slavery, they just didn’t want to go down without a fight.
@@HatWearingDog The southern economy would be reliant on convict labour instead of slave labour and they wouldn’t have got sympathy either because they committed a crime unlike the slave labour. The financial side of slavery was taught in an Anti- racism course I took. How that financial side sparked legal support of "race" for political reasons. Specifically that all original slaves in America were indentured but with the loss of labor after time served those with the wealth sought to retain their free labor. It is fascinating and people should learn more about our history. Learn how legally and politically those in power sought to get the public to be ok with permanent slavery for certain peoples. Race was a legally defined construct. One could be a different race dependent on the state they lived. People could petition the Supreme Court to legally change their race.
Now imagine the cost after. from cities changing, housing prices changing, costs to the US tax payer for social programs, and laws, law suits etc. The US lost more than it ever gained and continues losing.
Not from lack of trying first. They probably would have emptied every jail and dungeon in Europe before calling it quits. America would have been the first attempt at penal colonies, besides just Georgia. So we would've had the convicts, the various Christian groups escaping persecution, the Jews escaping Inquisitions, etc.
heh... this is a very thoughtful take. This and thinking about another take this channel had about the black plauge and how the reduction in labor allowed workers to successfully make political and economic demands, sparking innovations that an aristocracy wouldnt have. Slavery not being a thing would have acted in the same way, European workers wouldn't want to live in the colonies... Unless you paid them well. It may well have ended in smaller more advanced nations in the end.
Penal colony of the US, sure, instead of Australia. OK. But lets not forget, the Quakers were already in the US, the English, French, Danish, even the Swedes (anyone remember New Sweden?). That said, the US would still grow, but slower, and differently. Expansion South and West would have been slower. This gives the Native Americans more time to organize and fight back. Maybe a real strong Indian Confederacy, State or Country based around the Great Lakes? Remember... there were 100 million Native Americans in the Americas...

I was playing a few weeks ago and the "slave" topic was brought up because I am portuguese. I mentioned that someone was wrong by saying that "we" (because I'm not 500 years old) started slavery. I mentioned that slavery was already a common practice and African kingdoms would take advantage of it and even sell slaves to the Europeans. I was immediately contradicted by someone who said they were African and that, according to what they learned at school, "We" were the villains that came into their homes and kidnapped them. I mean, I ended the talk shortly after, there's no way I'm gonna tell someone "No, you're completely wrong and I feel like you've been lied to all your life". Any thoughts on this? (Yes, slavery was humanely brutal and wrong, I do not defend or support any of it. My point is that the Portuguese and Spanish from that time did not invent slavery, it's probably the oldest practice on Earth.)
The type of slavery practiced by African was no way similar to that of Europe! Yours was dehumanizing! Africans had war slaves but those slaves were eventually absorbed into the families. After a while, you couldn't tell who a slave was for the most part.
My personal belief is that while slavery was an awful and evil practice, one should not be punished nor held accountable for the sins of their forefathers. You didn't own slaves yourself, and you know that slavery is wrong, so you really aren't the villain. Even then, it was a different time period back then, if someone was different, they were probably enslaved or taken advantage of. Your ancestors just happened to be part of the unenslaved percentage.
@@blessedone6516 Thats a half truth. In that it's true only for specific localities in varying tribes and kingdons (of the era). This was overall rare. This is the oldest and first slave system (excluding the greater Asian continent). The destruction wrought upon the African continent from the Islamic slave trade was a major piece that enabled the Atlanic trade to happen in the first place.
They used indentured servants for hundreds of years. The problem was - at the end of their term - you were supposed to let them go. They were then supposed to be able to get land and become productive colonists. People volunteered to be indentured servants. In the South, slavery ruined all this resulting in poor whites being effectively surplus and pushed into marginal swamps and mountains. In the north, without slaves, land grants encouraged a constant stream of peasant farmers to settle.
Thing is, it was the North that first legalized slavery, though admittedly they started by enslaving Indians rather than blacks, the fact remains that the North had no problems with slavery. Actually, a lot of Northern Founding Fathers like John Hancock and Stephen Hopkins made their fortunes in the triangle trade
Umh not really. There were many diffrent kinds of slaves and most of them were bad. Some werent horrible or awful. But in almost every war outside of inner europe the losers were capture and sold as slaves.
A lot of people were indentured servants as punishment, frequently for crimes of poverty; England had taken over Ireland and confiscated all the land and the newly tenant farmers were responsible for paying money in exchange for the rent, rather than a portion of crops.
@@eave01 Yes - people convicted of petty crimes were sent out as indentured servants as an alternative to being hung! They used to recruit young men for the army in the same way! People with no other options volunteered too. Signing up as a servant for one year was common throughout Europe. To go to the colonies you had to sign up for 3-5 years.
I’m confused if the Europeans made money off of slavery then how would they have conquered Asia? Would it have been slower than in our timeline or what?
I'm Portuguese, this part of history is kind of well explained in portuguese history classes. So you can imagine how funny I find your comments on Portuguese slave trading.😂
@Ronan Theunissen it does! But the teachers (maybe some do) don't really explain how brutal it was. And, for some kind of weird reason, everybody seams to think that we (the Portuguese) were some kind of "good" colonizers because we didn't kill all the natives in the first contacts. Everybody knows about the slave trafficking, the sugar plants in Brazil and more. There's a lot more than what the video tells about the Portuguese (for example, there's some evidence that suggest Portuguese explorers discovered Australia first but kept quiet about it 😂😂)
its never actually talked about across the globe though. same with the Ottoman empire when they made white europeans slaves. Portuguese schools probably do teach it though
i love that this video brought up the influence Portugal had on slavery, I find Portugal is always glossed over in history even though we've done some terrible things
American slavery was the worst thing ever, they should have never brought them to America. Many of todays problems would not exist, America would be full white country with only Latinos as minority.
kinda sounds like you're saying the problem is black people in America? I might be misinterpreting but anyway, there's also asians? and native americans? those from the middle east? lol
The impact on the World as a whole is hard to wrap my brain around. The cultural differences world wide would be unimaginable. No Jazz, Blues, Rock and Roll, R&B, Pop and Hip music rising up in America? Not to mention the sports scenes and how they change?!?! Our Country would be COMPLETELY different.
The USA as we know it wouldn't exist at all. No sugar money = no reason to keep making so many voyages to the new world. Even if the pilgrims came, there might not have been a revolutionary war. Also, no cotton and plantations = several of the southern colonies that became states are probably never set up. Etc.
Not to.mention the black women in Nasa that helped the American space race hidden figures and no George Washington Carver .no many inventions to look then up for yourself
@marios gianopoulos Not true. Without black people to invent, innovate, and experiment on much of the technology and medicine we have today wouldn't have been created. You need capital, time, and resources to conduct proper R&D and without someone else creating all that for you innovation like how we've seen in the past century would be impossible. Just look at the dark ages.

John Hill Escobar True lol. The video suggested that even in an alternate world, Whites would still deem Brown/Black people as “outsiders” 😂. I dont take these nasty comments personally. The same heinous things were said about Italians, Jews, Japanese etc long ago. America hates everyone.
John Hill Escobar it wasn't missed. It's just that it seems like I refuses to accept that without the enslavement of Africans the European empire would be a tiny fraction of what it is today. He missed a lot. I love the idea but it's lacking any real deep thought of effective that butterfly would be.
Not super sure, but I do think there have been a few cases in which forceful invasions with an army were not successful in the Americas. This was due to the numbers of soldiers that could be sent all the way from Europe to the new world and the amount of time needed to send reinforcements. It might have been possible for natives to win just with numbers and better knowledge of the land (allowing them to use surprise attacks and traps. If Europeans are unable to keep a constant stream of soldiers being sent over and are faced with the increasing costs, then what would they do?
They wouldnt have lasted long anyway. You can only last so long against a determined enemy that has sea faring ships, colonial enriched economies, and gunpowder when your own civilization hadnt invented the wheel yet.
Got here because the thought just occurred to me, I googled the scenario and your video was very near the top and looked like the most compelling rabbit hole to go down. Glad I made the leap, you covered this from multiple angles I hadn’t considered. Seems like at the end of the day, bad things are always going to happen when profit is the sole motive. If you force one bad thing out of the picture, another one just comes in to fill the vacuum. Maybe there’s a video to be made on what it profit never became a motivator for humanity, but then I can only imagine the myriad consequences that would emerge as a result there as well.

This is actually an otherwise incredibly great video but I have just one complaint that most people wouldn't think of: It wasn't completely unthinkable for medieval Christians that Africans could be Christian -- it was long known that Ethiopia was Christian, for example, and there had long been a desire to spread and convert pagans -- the problem was that Islamic kingdoms controlled every route to travel south, and by the time Europe had the required sailing technologies, profit motive took over and the actual conversion movement was sidelined -- particularly after converting the Congo caused the Congo to suddenly resisted the slave trade and caused a defensive war against Portugal in which both kingdoms were Christian

I'm sure it's not intentional, and I do appreciate his attempt. But the fact 95% of the idea of race as we mean it came from 1800s, that human bands didn't practice slavery and were aggressively egalitarian and cooperative for 30,000 yrs, that all the slavery since the dawn of domestication 10,000 yrs ago before the transatlantic slavery(such as Rome, Arab) was not chattel slavery by categorical imperative (x are always slaves, y are always not) nor inflicted on every subsequent generation ad infinitum, that you cant use the ways Blacks are treated during or after slavery to make an argument for how they'd be treated if they were never enslaved, etc.
@@rickwrites2612 one any alternate history is untrue and made up. The idea of Race didn't come from the 1800s it formed long before that. Yes the Romand saw races for who they were but based it also and more so on nation alignment. The Chinese were racist against Europeans and vice versa. The only reason why Race began to play a larger factor was the inclusion of Colonialism and foreign exploration in the 15-1600s. Whites began to interact with mid-southern Africans tribes and and in true European fashion compared themselves to what they called savages.
Good job with the Alternate timeline! I always imagined what this would look like. However it is very easy to focus mainly on the effects of topics like this on the Western world and not so much Africa and Asia. Stories like these are usually told from a Western narrative....just like all the history books. For me I think the African continent which had many powerful empires and feudal states would have continued to trade with the European, Arab and Asian traders and trading outposts to the continent. The 10-13 million Africans that were sold/taken/stolen from the continent would have stayed and been a part of 3 main things that would have reshapened Africa; War (Between African states and foreign invades). Trade (Exchange of goods, services and ideas). Knowledge Exchange (Writing, Art, Language and Industrial advancement)...... Possibly more things but these are what I am focusing on. Each of these 3 things would have benefited from 10-13 million able bodied men and women that wouldn't have been slaves and would have been at home. Concerning racism and the inferior perception of the African man; to me these were convenient stereotypes created by a few very powerful and wealthy individuals that benefited from the trans-atlantic slave trade. Monarchs, Business traders, Religious leaders etc. If Africans were never subjected to industrialized slavery, the rare but inevitable interaction between common Europeans, Colonists, Asians and Africans would have been more "humane". One of curiosity and exchange of ideas. With a dash of fear and racism of course, but not nearly as bad as the interaction where by your first experience is observing another human being (different from you) in a cage and in chains. No matter how good and religious you are this type of first contact molds you and your generations after you. I wish someone would tell the same Alternate time line but from an African narrative and point of view.
@@buckplug2423 Well Africa was making great intellectual progress before Europeans interfered. You underestimate how technologically advanced Africa would have been. Math itself was invented in Africa. Digital computer systems originated from ancient African cultural practices. They had made astrological advancements that we are still realizing to this day. Where Africa went wrong was their weapons technology. Europeans had the better weapons. However, without the finances acquired from slavery, none of those European empires would have had the finances to continue advancing their weapons so quickly. This is the only part of the video he got wrong. European countries would not have had the finances, weapons or manpower to still colonize Africa. Most continents including Europe and Africa would have advanced at a slow pace until oil was discovered. Africa and North America, the biggest producers of oil would have benefited the most from industrialization and empires from countries in those continents would have been born. With abundant knowledge of the solar system perhaps an African country is the first to the moon. The USA in a different form still exists due to oil money. A Cold War between those countries begin, etc.

I actually do think of slavery in ancient Rome. I didn't learn about American slavery until middle school here in Finland, meanwhile I learned about slavery in Rome, and slavery in general, reading fiction in like 5th grade. Pretty romantizized view of it, I remember the book had a slave teacher who was very well treated and eventually freed, but still.
From what i know, that did happen sometimes in the roman era. They loved getting greek slaves for teaching and other non fisical tasks. About the freeing, depending of the era, and other specifics, slaves could earn their freedom if they worked long enough. After the changes by the Gracci to include more people as roman citizens, it helped, and various other reforms the passed to diminish the latifunds of slave owners... wait a second...

Hey Cody! Great video. As a history nerd, I can see how hard you tried to walk on eggshells, well done. The only thing that bugged me in the back of my head was that I kept thinking about ancient worldviews on race. They weren't just apathetic, but legitimately curious, there were wealthy black Romans during the empire, and black Nubian dynasties during Egypt's old kingdom. Both never seemed to show any regard towards each others race other than "oh, hi!" but none of these ancient kingdoms developed systems of slavery based on ethnicities or race. In fact, I've seen Italian 14th century paintings with black Africans featured as exotic and interesting. Don't you think we may have had something similar if race-based slavery had never existed? What if it had been religion based, or based on the right of conquest? What happens if in those centuries if they attempted to Christianize Africans, thus making them un-slaveable? Cheers.
William Smith not at first, but afterwards it was. That's why in the 1800s you get a lot of literature explaining why Caucasians are superior to blacks and trying to cite it in the Bible, etc.
Well i'd have to disagree and agree, coming from a mixed predominantly black guy who researches history on a daily bases it would either be slavery from Muslims or Europeans or blacks. Most Africans turned Islamic because the closest empires were Muslim and west African kings spread the religion. East Africa was christian entirely (Miaphysite like how east Rome (byzantine) is orthodox Christian) Catholic but got conquered by Muslims due to their religion. Most conflicts back then were religion based Muslims enslaved non Islamic blacks and Christians Enslaved Islamic blacks and those Islamic blacks enslaved Spiritual and ancestral blacks (They call it animism / pagan but thats a dumb term personally). Blacks helped whites in their time of need and vice-versa many times in history we as blacks tend to have a more simple look on life (without western influence) so we have had no need to advance in any way during those times. My point is the slavery in those times were religion based and since Islam was hated by Catholics plus the fall of some great Islamic empires of the time (civil wars and refusing to help one another in times of need) it was only a matter of time before Catholics came to blacks and hated on them. The only reason we has Africans didn't expect it was because Europe was far from central and west African kingdoms and the great Sahara desert was a barrier for any land army's coming to take them on. Islamic Africans were enslaving Africans who didn't believe in Islam, Catholics enslaved most of west central and south Africa because they were Islamic and Spiritualists east Africa was CONQUERED and enslaved by Islamic because they were Catholics albeit a different branch. The hate that followed was just a bi-product of people's beliefs.
Since wealthy black romans were a rare occurrence ( along with black roman peasants ) they most likely had some special status or connection to a powerful roman they were accepted, also slavery from africa was simply not needed in the Roman Empire because they got sufficient amounts of slaves from te British isles and other Western European regions

jj jj So it makes it totally cool for how many to die on the march across the desert? Or by mutilation to create eunuchs? Or to still have forced slaves to this day?

Interesting, however Africa was already in contact with Europe for thousands of years going as far back as the Greek era. Also, without the constraints of slavery many of the West African kingdoms would’ve continued to advanced unabated and would challenge Colonization in later centuries. Just my two cents!
I feel that while the kingdoms would have undoubtedly expanded and had their own societal revolutions, the lack of geological resources would have been a huge limiting factor. Eventually, they might have even turned to colonization themselves, but even so, would have probably been outcompeted by European nations. It's hard to say really, with such a dramatic change to history
the only parts of Africa that were very connected to Europe was north of the sahara like egypt and morocco and modern day libya and tunisia and algeria. sub-saharan africa was quite isolated other than a few european trading ports and obviously slavery. sub-saharan africa wouldn’t have been exposed to modern western ideas such as stuff during the enlightenment and industrial revolution
itd be so hard to judge, historians are still finding out lots about early african history that we had noo clue about before due to the westernization of all history, but yea what we know about primart resources does indicate its very possible that africa could have been one of the earlier colonisers, specially since theyve found evidence of early kingdoms that had no shortage of wealth and experienced travelers

I believe without slavery in the timeline you mentioned it would have potentially started the industrial revolution earlier as the under population to farm the crops would potentially force Europe to mechanize earlier
That’s an excellent point, actually. Less workers could force people to invent ways around slow production. But I think that they’d need to suddenly lose a decent portion of the workforce, increasing the need for workers or something that could replace them
Maybe once the native people died off enough in the Caribbean, then people would’ve innovated ways to keep production up
No it would have started later, the industrial revolution required resources.
@@JabramAllen so if slavery did not exist does that mean all ethnicities would hate each other. In other words even worse than today?
The British only were able to conquer their lands once the repeating rifle was invented.

beetovan was black
That music would still have been invented---only in Africa.

Also, the use of ganja/marijuana for spiritual and medicinal purposes
amongst a host of many other things. :)
Very cool. I always wondered where the curry dishes in Caribbean cuisine originated from.
Arthur Williams Hmm.
China was fairly strong in the 15th-16th century, so instead of taking labor from there, I reckon that China would have had to modernize to meet the challenge from the West in Southeast Asia. This could have led to China dominating much of this region.

The penalty for their crimes in the South was death, so what if the Union had done the right thing, and tried, convicted, and executed all the Americans who were involved in the horrible practice of slavery ???
The reason its "controversial" is because there will always be some of those people who'd just any excuse to act the victim, I'm not saying that the fact your race was exploited in the past is good (slavery, racism and prejudice and such disgust me) but the fact that you're using that as an excuse to do something today is just plain stupid, it's all in the past, its history not society today so don't think its a valid excuse

@Enclave Soldier yeah it was.
The Confederacy had everything to lose when it came to the abolishment of slavery, they just didn’t want to go down without a fight.

Anti racism class? Lol
For GB Australia then may have stayed out of the picture for quite a while longer, simply because there was no workforce left to colonize it.
heh... this is a very thoughtful take.
The myth bugs me, please forgive my following essay.
The African slave system was highly connected to the middle eastern (islamic) slave trade - and historically synonymous. This is the oldest and first slave system (excluding the greater Asian continent). It's one of the most historically brutal things one human has done to another, and for perspective comparison it was many times worse than any other similar system. The scale of it was insane and it's still alive today in smaller forms.
@@F343x2 that's pretty easy for you to say without referencing any sources! The sun Saharan slave trade was evil and brutal but doesn't diminish the trans Atlantic slave trade in any way. There were African kings that were dethroned, so their empires could be plundered! When will you give an accurate account without attempting to vilify those Africans?

Now I'm wondering what the world would've been like if Christopher Columbus and the Europeans would have been chased out by American natives
They would’ve came back with an army?
Sarcalogos Tortolero but what if the natives was too strong?
Not super sure, but I do think there have been a few cases in which forceful invasions with an army were not successful in the Americas.
This was due to the numbers of soldiers that could be sent all the way from Europe to the new world and the amount of time needed to send reinforcements.
It might have been possible for natives to win just with numbers and better knowledge of the land (allowing them to use surprise attacks and traps.
If Europeans are unable to keep a constant stream of soldiers being sent over and are faced with the increasing costs, then what would they do?
Lil karmicheal they did fight, once it was too late
We have recent examples of attempts to entirely remove the profit motive from society - Kampuchea was one. It did not, on the whole, turn out well.

This is actually an otherwise incredibly great video but I have just one complaint that most people wouldn't think of:
It wasn't completely unthinkable for medieval Christians that Africans could be Christian -- it was long known that Ethiopia was Christian, for example, and there had long been a desire to spread and convert pagans -- the problem was that Islamic kingdoms controlled every route to travel south, and by the time Europe had the required sailing technologies, profit motive took over and the actual conversion movement was sidelined -- particularly after converting the Congo caused the Congo to suddenly resisted the slave trade and caused a defensive war against Portugal in which both kingdoms were Christian

There are several other problems like this in his history, where he conflates important things or makes untrue absolutes that altogether result in skewed assumptions and bias his conclusions.
"hrmmm im just so smart, no one else would think of this complaint"
Good job with the Alternate timeline! I always imagined what this would look like.
However it is very easy to focus mainly on the effects of topics like this on the Western world and not so much Africa and Asia. Stories like these are usually told from a Western narrative....just like all the history books.
For me I think the African continent which had many powerful empires and feudal states would have continued to trade with the European, Arab and Asian traders and trading outposts to the continent.
The 10-13 million Africans that were sold/taken/stolen from the continent would have stayed and been a part of 3 main things that would have reshapened Africa;
War (Between African states and foreign invades).
I have a question, what is it like to be African when seen by African Americans?
@John Barber History is hilarious isn't it
I love the idea of seeing this from the African perspective.

I dunno, I feel like all the petty criminals that got sent to Australia would have been shipped to the new world as indentured servants instead
Australia wasn't colonised and used as a prison island until after the American revolution
I Think...
*InsertCreativeUsernameHere * england first visited Australia in 1780, declared it uninhabited (they believed that due to the aboriginal Australians nomadic lifestyle it ‘didn’t count’ as inhabited) 8 years later in 1788 the first colony arrived.
@@Pedro_Colicigno In the book I think he got freed early as thanks for saving the life of a child. Either the slave owner's own child, or the child's close friend.

Louie Rodriguez @ Your actually one of the few comments in this comment section talking sense. I thank you for your honesty and wisdom.
The hate that followed was just a bi-product of people's beliefs.
before the 18 century people were far more concerned with regions and religion than pigmentation

Interesting, however Africa was already in contact with Europe for thousands of years going as far back as the Greek era. Also, without the constraints of slavery many of the West African kingdoms would’ve continued to advanced unabated and would challenge Colonization in later centuries. Just my two cents!
PeriodT
Dollz Haulsj9 please don’t bring that to UA-cam
I commend you for tackling a topic so sensitive. I found this video really interesting and thought-provoking, just like the rest of them. Great job Cody!
