Honestly one of my favourite games I’ve played this year. The story was great, music was written by Lena reine (the Celeste composer) and the mechanics were inventive and fun. The world design was also fantastic
My favorite part about my experience with Chicory: A Colorful Tale is that I thought the game was a puzzle platformer that let you color, and I was shocked when I reached the first boss fight. It made it so much more intense; I absolutely loved it!
HUGE heads up on this one: Aside from the relatively minor crashes mentioned in this review, there are a *lot* of other bugs that have been reported. Some can be fixed by an in-game teleportation method, but the worst has happened to me, and has literally made my game unplayable. In this bug, every time you try to start the game, you get a black text box error message, followed by a force close. No way around it. Uninstalling and re-installing doesn't fix it. Multiple people have reported this issue to the devs via Twitter, and their response so far has literally been: "not sure why it happens for some people and not others, but we can guarantee it will never happen if you refrain from using touch controls (sorry)" Other bug reports are getting responses that the devs will issue a patch after the holidays, but for this one, which is completely game breaking, for now it sounds like you're just supposed to refrain from using touch controls. In a painting game. Where touch controls make the game much more playable. I can't bring myself to try deleting my entire save file to see if a fresh save fixes the issue - I was enjoying the game, but not enough to want to replay the multiple hours I already had in it this soon. So... purchase at your own risk. I'd recommend either waiting a few months and hoping they fix the bugs, or at the very least, refraining from *ever* touching the screen while the game is running. Honestly, I wish I could get a refund since, at least for now, the game is just sitting - 100% unplayable - in my library.
@@D3sdinova Yep, that's what I did. I made sure my save was uploaded to the cloud, completely deleted the game from my Switch, then re-downloaded it. When I started the game up, the same error issue occurred (black box error message, followed by immediate forced closure of the game). My only other option would be completely deleting my save file and starting the game from scratch. Since I'm already several hours in, I really don't feel like re-playing the beginning this soon. The game is good, but not "I want to replay it immediately" good. I just have to hope the devs will eventually fix it. Seeing as this game breaking bug was reported pretty much immediately upon launch and they still haven't done anything (and don't appear to have any idea why it's happening), I'm unfortunately not holding my breath. Sucks, because it really is a game I'd love to finish.
I know Greg (the game dev) and I'm sure he will patch this up. Just give him some time. It's a really small game dev team, but thanks for the notice. :)
PS: I had to included that the dev have added HD Rumbkle feature in the Switch version. Something that not even all first party Nintendo games have lol. So each sounds of paint/brush style have a different rumble. ;)
I cannot say this game appeals to me personally but the gameplay may be something that my daughter would enjoy since she loves to color. She would just have me complete the boss fights so she could continue painting everything.
This game is really great. For the most part I found it runs great, but I, too experienced weird crashes. Two so far, but no progressed lost. Love the story and the game play mechanic. My 4 year old loves coloring in the areas when I'm playing with her.
This isn't usually the type of game I go for, but I might pick it up on sale because it does look very unique. The trailer for the game didn't really hook me, but this review does have me interested now. Great Job!
I was curious if the screen i pressure sensitive? As if you choose to play using the Colors Live Sonar pen or other type of pen would it be compatible. I would guess not seeing as to use the Sonar pen you have to mess with the volume control, but i haven't seen anyone say if the screen is pressure sensitive or you put down the same amount of paint no mater what pressure you use.
I really love the game. Today i had just pure joy playing. Like feeling alive and creative. You would think, because you don't need to color every part of the world, i wouldn't do that. But wrong. 🤣 even screens I will literally never see again I make full of colors most of the time. 😄 So I guess I will watch the video after I finished it. Wandersong of the same creator is also great game!
It’s on the list! I’m trying to finish off Ni No Kuni 2 but thinking of playing this for when I have surgery on my leg in two weeks and I need something not too taxing while I recover.
I'm hoping this game gets a physical release! This looks like an amazing game to play with my 6 year old daughter who loves painting! Holding out on a physical version for my collection! Don't like going digital personally.
Thank god you can use the touch screen, I'm so bad at aiming with joysticks and I feel like this game could make me extremely mad if I mess up coloring something XD
Be careful. There's a game breaking bug (as in, the game begins to consistently crash upon starting) that the devs have apparently connected to using touch controls. Loads of people have reported this on Twitter (it has also happened to me), and the dev's response is that they have no clue why it's happening to some players and not others, but that it won't happen if you don't use touch controls. My game is now 100% unplayable - and I was at least halfway through the story when this happened. Really wish I'd never used the touch conrols, even though the game is harder without them.
Hey there! Funny you should say that I just bought colors but only the digital copy and got a touch screen compatible pen off amazon and I'm totally gonna try it on chicory when it arrives. I'm guessing that if you have the colors live sonar pen it wont have the pressure sensitivity but it would be interesting to see if it did :) the sonar pens are like £35.00 so I'm a little dubious about getting one just yet
@@Gameitupchannel I got in on the Kickstarter for Colors Live and got the bundle, physical with sonar pen, for my wife. We just recently moved, military orders, so pretty much everything is currently in storage. If I manage to come across it, anytime in the near future, I'll give it a try and update, if you or @SwitchUp haven't already.
Something seems off with the Okami sequel…. Looks pretty interesting, seems like a god wishlist game for now. Christmas sales got the backlog longer than Santa’s list already.
Thanks brother ☺️ mark emailed me earlier saying it's on its way getting excited now can't decide what to play on it first hmmmm dark souls or botw or maybe Skyrim 🤣 the choices are endless

Yay!! Finally! Well Done Sophie!
Fantastic review even though its a game that is not my cup of tea.
Nice one Sophie! Very interesting game! 👍 👍
Who wrote the puns? Was it you Glen or did Sophie have her hand in this?
Sophie wrote the puns, haha. Glen
Thank you for letting me play and review this game for you. Its such a wonderful game :)
Thanks for a great review. Glen
Great work as usual
Wholesome

Can you upload it to the cloud? Delete it and download it from the cloud? At least youll still have your save file, well if you pay for it that is.

Aw. I was looking forward to playing this with the touchscreen :/
@@grey3414 honestly I think it's a minority of people because it's the first time I heard about this bug, but who knows.

You can play the entire game in coop. The second player is just another brush.
So you could play and your daughter could color 😄
@@denycast Ok, on that note, this might be something I look into....as long as my daughter has interest. Thanks for the advice
I'm pretty sure you can disable boss fights as well
Reminds me of de blob along with splatoon. Great job Sophie & Switch Kings
Never thought I would be, but consider me Tinkled Pink for this little gem. Great review BTW.
Thanks for the video Glen, hope all is well 😁
If you have OCD the game’s length will at least triple.
The concept of the game looks really cool and creative but the style just doesn’t grab me. Great thorough review as always SaveDex 🙌🏽
Yay you’re back!
It's in my top 5 games of 2021. The soundtrack is made by Lena Raine (Celeste, Minecraft, etc) is awesome. 😁

Compared to Eastward?
Is this game better on steam or switch?
I'd forgotten about this game. Thanks for the reminder!
Cheers Glen! Great review Sophie and I'll subscribe to her channel as well. Looks very interesting, it will definitely be added to my list
Appreciate that Adam. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt no worries, I'm considering becoming a pattern so will have to look into it
As soon as I fount out about it I prayed for it to hit the Switch sooner rather than later!
I was looking at this for my wife so I am happy that it plays so well. Added to my wishlist.
So with patches to fix the crashes this is looking like a top tier game review would have been 90+ without the crashing
Can the switch handle a stylus? I feel like the screen is only touch enabled like 4% of thetime you would expect it
Thanks very much for the review, looking forward to giving this one a go. Happy Nee Year to you, and yours, cheers!
I enjoyed the various artistic master pieces presented in this high end art show. 10 out of 10, would watch the art show again.
Another indie gem to close the year; I may start the next yr right with it
Awesome game wish I could play it but my switch is broken as an artist I would love to play it someday
Glad to see a new video! :D

Nice review of a nice looking game.
Another game I probably wouldn't have gotten, but now goes on the wishlist.
You're the best, Glen 🎉
Wow wow wow!!! Korone finally released her game
This game looks so charming. I love the concept too. Will be getting it for sure.
Glad to see this game getting more attention. Need to get my hands on it.
It really gives me paper Mario, epic mickey, and de blob vibes

If nothing else, this review has pointed me to another OST to go add to my library. Can’t be bothered to pay for or play the game though 😂
Looks intriguing!
Not sure it's a game for me but very interesting video. Thanks
I wonder how well this game would play using the stylus from Colors Live. Seems like it would almost be a better setup.

Great review but the game seems a bit pricey for me , anything with the panpipes in there soundtrack is a automatic 20 for audio 👍👍 great work Sophie!
Not my cup of tea, but it looks lovely if you enjoy something like this!
It looks like game&watch graphics 😗
looks great!
this game looks so cutee
If this is like Zelda I’m not sure I could play it 😭

Uhhh if it’s like Zelda idt I could play it😹
All that colouring seems like a lot of work. 🥴
‘Zelda like’ is the most over used term
Haha - it’s also true though. At least it’s not the Dark Souls of Zelda Likes

Too bad the art direction sucks. It could have been beautiful.
