- Today we're taking a look at the new Empire rework for The Supreme Patriarch himself, Balthazar Gelt! It has him starting out in Cathay, with many new dilemmas, magical abilities and a brand new Colleges of Magic mechanic.
The changes and features will launch in a patch alongside the upcoming Thrones of Decay DLC(s).

I mean it's kinda cool in the way that you can do it. Also you can go to different places in the empire than before. It's still very different than it was.

I love how heavily into replayability they leaned with this rework. So many ways of playing Gelt now, instead of always starting in Solland, always fighting vamps, always having to kill an orc stack or two every couple of turns at Fort Soll.
I love how Karl can just utter "Not likely o.O"
I saw this in my recommendations 3 days ago. I wasn't interested since I've played a lot of Gelt. Then I saw another content creator talking about the reworks and that Gelt now starts in the Cathay region. This was again in my recommendations, probably because I've been watching the other creators, and now I am VERY interested in seeing how his new start affects his campaign!
I laughed out loud when you returned Gelt home and he declared himself the Emperor Patriach and attacked Altdorf. I think even Tzeentch himself did a double take and a "WTF?"
In my more humble thinking I was thinking you might have marched on Festus and set up in Brass Castle. More fool me!

As an Empire main i can't wait for this rework and I will br getting this DLC even though the rework is free. I still think the halflings should come to TWW3 though.
I'm gutted we still have no halflings! The additions we are getting this time around are really good though, so I can't be bitter about it :P

@@JanetOnOccasion Halflings better release as part of a DLC that puts them against Marius Leitdorf. The game still needs Marius, anyways, lest the invasion of invisible unicorns spell the doom of man.

These are some really cool changes to Gelt, really helps differentiate him from Karl. Definitely bonus points for him being my first Thrones campaign, though the Thunderbarge puts a lot of weight behind a Dwarf one, too.
Okay, loved the twist at the end, wasn't expecting that honestly.
This campaign looks like such a blast. CA knocked this one out of the park.
Seeing how, canonically, Gelt turned to Necromancy and an alliance with Vlad von Carstein during the end times, I can see this happening. Good Luck!
Not at all in the same ball park haha, seeing as Vlad was practically a good guy and nearly any wizard could be a necromancer during the end times but, this is definitely a fun campaign idea lol.
Probably still a better story than the end times we got tbh.
@@garymcjerry “Practically a good guy” is not “actually a good guy”. And Necromancy uses Dhar, which will corrupt any and every human (and elf) that uses it. Long and short- it’s an “evil act” he did for the “good of the Empire.”
I feel Gelt has always been an arrogant monster. The writers didn't make him a Gold Wizard by accident, he's greedy, self serving and craves power - it's just that up until now his story has been about creating power for himself within the confines of existing systems of control. He has an entire secret past life and got to the Empire by conning a ship captain so the first thing we learn about him is that he's untrustworthy. He's also affected the accent of a nobleman in order to sound more important - no wonder he and Vlad get on. Valdreag17 has it right; he does things for the "good of the Empire" very much in quotations.
@@JanetOnOccasionI mean when the end of the world is at stake, saving the world becomes self serving for anyone. That's why Vlad fought Chaos. How can you bring the empire under your tyrannical rule if it doesn't exist?.
I like this change as it has an interesting story with a reason to be in the new start and he can go back to the empire

The colleges of magic are awesome! Also finally (well there a few other instances) some campaign magic.
I'm not sure about moving Gelt that far though. If you put every race everywhere you erode away the difference between locations and thus have to be careful to not get rid of the diversity you try to create in the first place.
BTW, rather than being active abilities (I mean the hawks are cool) I feel like the last skill in each colleges unique skill line should be an army/campaign effect, highlighting the wizards role as advisors and scholars of diverse non-magical aspects related to their lore.
Not gonna lie that was one hell of a twist at the end.

i know you don't tend to use agents but having a swarm of wizard heroes so you can utilize the different buffs while also allowing for mix and matching, if there was a campaign to use heroes this is the one
That was a lot of fun.
Gelts wizard doomstack will be so incredibly easy to make. After about 20 turns i will have permanent uptime with Final Transformation and Flock of Doom.

My first mod after ToD drops will be to rename "Arcane Essays" to "Arcane Knowledge". The idea that thousands and thousands of essays are being continuously written, and act as a resource, is kind of silly. "I just fought a battle, I better go write 200 essays about it!" Lol.

Normal players after returning to the empire would rush to Brass keep to make it the new capitol. Janet takes Altdorf for the lawls.
Hey Janet, been a follower of your TWWH stuff for a long time, love your work and that hasn’t changed with this. You mentioned wanting Mastery of Elemental Winds through that landmarks. I think there’s a bug. Gelt and wizards already have it, you had it in that very first battle in fact. Keep up the fun work!
So, now that Gelt has access to all the colleges of magic, enhanced magic abilitites, AND cataclysm spells, CA really needs to brush up Teclis and Mazdamundi. :D

I edit them out. There's no point having folks sit through it and it gives me an opportunity to have a drink :)

Aw man, didn't he used to have faction wide armor buff ? I think it was only like +10 but still...
Wish that +20 armor was faction wide and not just his army.
0:40 When did Balthasar's faction trait get nerfed because he's supposed to give every unit 10 extra armour and I'm pretty sure he's supposed to buff missile damage for certain units.
He still has a skill to buff missiles or melee units (mutually exclusive skill), and he gives +20 armor (faction trait) for his army.
A bit of a shame that one of the options in that third decision seems to have no upside to it, independance is good but agreements can be broken if you want to.

Ahhhh I can’t believe they did it! They gave Gelt a unique Colleges of Magic mechanic! The only thing it’s missing is a bombastically beautiful UI, but I’ll take it! Those mechanics are so cool! ❤

@@SuiSideex They can expand the map, they’ve done so multiple times. Or they could put the characters somewhere unexpected. I wouldn’t read so much into this.
Okayyyy, another homie I´ll never manage to confederate before his faction gets wiped out. Don´t get me wrong, I like diversity. But please CA, give us a chance to gather the boys and I mean all of them.
From the screenshot posted they have given a Beastman like confederation mechanic to the Dwarf, based around the reworked grudges system. So I am guessing the empire has been given something similar.

@@tylernilson7021 With all due respect, no. I don´t want to rely on mods that have to updated with every official update, mostly after a couple of week, when you´re lucky. And I still see it in the developers responsibility to make this game fun.
Aside from other changes I do not like him moved from the empire at all. I don't want to just play Carl all the time. I hope there will be a mod that returns him back.

@@JanetOnOccasion So you can return to the Empire... To do what exactly? Bring ruin to Altdorf, kill France and take over? This is even more ridiculous. I am among the people that liked the elector count system even in the WH2. And now what are you supposed to do? Confederate everyone? Can you do that really? And how much time it will take to even start without burning some elector count down? "Triumphant Homecoming" my ass, thats just some prince Arthas cosplay. I don't know, why even make all this? What's the point if you return in 9 turns? Now if you play any other Empire lord what will happen to AI Gelt? He will be killed in a few turns? His position in Solland was very good start as he could attack the main threat to the Empire - vampires. And then could gradually confederate counts because a lot of them he can easily save early on and gain their allegiance, I do not see him doing it now at all.
