I remember seeing this video the year it got uploaded. I was an aspiring drummer at the age of 16 and I can remember so clearly watching this video and being mesmerized by his playing. Such simple grooves sticking wise (except a few in there that is a bit more complex), but man. You wanna talk about groove? God damn! I finished watching and all I remember was thinking that whatever he did in this video, that is what i need to learn how to do. Followed his stuff ever since, legend drummer!
There are drummers out there who are able to play incredible things. And then there are drummers, who can play the easiest things and still sound incredible!
After years and years.... I keep coming back to this vid, this might be my favourite drum video ever. The grooves are basically simple, but still i cant stop nodding my head. Feeling! Pure Feeling!
I greatly appreciate the fact that Benny is a master at drum tuning. His drums always sound great no matter which kit or what application. Young drummers of the world take note.... Danny Thomspon
Nice groove which is very important for a drummer. It is what made drummers like John Bonham stand out who was less technical than a lot of drummers today but his groove still stands him out as being a fantastic drummer. Benny Greb has the groove and the technical skills. A great combination.
Benny makes good playing and good technique accessible to everyone. He is one of the very few drummers who you really feel you could aspire to be. He's a bloody nice guy too.
if i could steal talent from any drummer this would be the guy, he is awesome benny greb is my hero i hope one day i could even play with 50% of his talent
A friend of a friend of mine is a 14 year old who started playing at the age of 2 and he is really good. That friend of mine recently told me that that drummer got a masterclass from benny.... when I heard that... I don't think I have ever been so jealous...
Completely solid. Snare choices (between flange and die-cast sounds, wood and metal, tuning, etc.) sounded great. What can I say, I love this kind of stuff...and just with two room mics...that's drumming.
Yeah. He's so smooth a musical. and even when he solos, he's playing what fits at the moment, not out to show off his trademark techniques as some soloists would do.
it says in the description: "The sound has been recorded with only two room-microphones." It still sounds good to me though. snares are crisp, toms are warm.
@darktirador i think he just changed bass drum and snare, you can even notice it visually and hear the difference in sound. 1st bass drum was smaller (18" i assume) then 2nd one(22"or 20"), and the snare drums were swapped a couple of times too. he rotates these drums according to what he plays. jojo mayer does that too on his recordings can hear it when listening.
It's noy even in an odd time signature although great songo fill. This vid is awesome. Everytime i get bored on drums i just think about this vid and just make up my own random groves. He wasn't really trying at 2:05
@rootvalue, it looks and sounds like the first fill is RRL and the second fill is LLRL with the last note of the second fill being accented. It fits the motion too. But I could be terribly wrong. :P
His groove is amazing and really deep...Beside this, I really dont get how this drum sound could be done with only two ROOM mics? (hand technique is important, but im not talking about that now)...what about that drum kick sound? Isnt a bass drum mic there? strangely the camera never shows all the kick drum, but in some takes it seems to be something like a mic leg there... what do you think?
+drumstudio2000 Because there is just drums and no music, you don't need to enhance say the klick of the kick to make it audible through the music. And if you look at old recordings the whole shit is recored in the same room witch 1-4 mics and it works
+Casper Bjerkehagen im playing and recording drums for 20 years now... I know what you say, I know john glyn mic method for bonzo, etc....still dont get how that sound is possible with only 2 room mics... must be bennys magic... lol
@sticksanddrums1 no need for drum dial..i have a sonor 18x17.5 kick and it sounds like a cannon..depending on the heads you have, i use this method..i tune the front head a little tighter than batter head..and for the size i'm using, i have a clear powerstroke 3 and a fiberskyn 3 on the reso head..it sounds killer.. and it has that open jazz sound you seek, but yet versatile enough that you can play almost any style with that sound..tight , punchy, with just enough low end "boom" and resonance!
@sweetfly66 Ten points for having one of the most eloquent and best supported arguments I have ever seen on UA-cam! It's good to see some intelligence still survives the hate-filled world of UA-cam.
As soon as I saw it, and before I saw this comment, I thought it was RRLK, with the K being on the down beat. It may not be correct, but played right, it will give the same sound. Hope that helps.
i think he also uses byzance extra dry at times now also. search for meinl byzance dark, that video is great. it will also give a whole mess of other videos in the "more from" and "related videos" sections from meinl. most of their lines are displayed in these videos. they really showcase the cymbals characteristics. way better than going to a companys web site and clicking either "performance" or "choke" hits, haha.
KaffeekocheR1 is right there's no best drummer or best in what ever in the world because there's always someone "better" so it's "better" to say being "better" is being the best because the word best is a conclusion while "better" is progress (some kinda metaphor), lol. all hail benny!..
well benny only uses sonor drums so it's most likely a sonor drum, but i can't tell u what type it is, his normal kit is an SQ2 custom kit, so he might of ordered it in or something, anyway, hope that helped a little
18 years I’ve been coming back to this video. Still the best drumming on UA-cam.
I remember seeing this video the year it got uploaded. I was an aspiring drummer at the age of 16 and I can remember so clearly watching this video and being mesmerized by his playing. I finished watching and all I remember was thinking that whatever he did in this video, that is what i need to learn how to do. Followed his stuff ever since, legend drummer!
The second groove is a simple groove, but it's Benny's dynamics and technique that make it sound so amazing. He has incredible control.
A decade later, but I completely agree
I greatly appreciate the fact that Benny is a master at drum tuning. His drums always sound great no matter which kit or what application. Young drummers of the world take note....
Danny Thomspon
1:08 - 1:25 Holy god that is a sweet groove
The one at 3:40 though, :D
Nice groove which is very important for a drummer. It is what made drummers like John Bonham stand out who was less technical than a lot of drummers today but his groove still stands him out as being a fantastic drummer. Benny Greb has the groove and the technical skills. A great combination.
I'm totally gonna steal those drum grooves that Benny is playing. But he's one of my favorite drummers of all times.
Benny makes good playing and good technique accessible to everyone. He is one of the very few drummers who you really feel you could aspire to be.
He's a bloody nice guy too.
foot stomping!... cool grooves.. great feel.. Benny is the man
I keep coming back to this video to listen, it's like a groove drug.
I came he for all the Drum solo set's Benny Greb own's Nice work:-).
Absolute mastery of simple, solid playing.
absolutely. The fact that the kick isn't muffled to shit makes me so incredibly happy I can barely even contain myself.
I like how his absolute chaos actually results in order.
drumeo brought me here
Me too bro
if i could steal talent from any drummer
this would be the guy, he is awesome
benny greb is my hero
i hope one day i could even play with 50% of his talent
The last one is so great. Love those kind of grooves that just keeps flowing on :D
A friend of a friend of mine is a 14 year old who started playing at the age of 2 and he is really good. That friend of mine recently told me that that drummer got a masterclass from benny.... when I heard that... I don't think I have ever been so jealous...

love his snare sound in the second groove. huge!
Nice nice. Going through his "The Language of Drumming" Book over and over again. He is just awesome.
i've seen this guy live, he is really awesome, i adore his way of playing the drums.
That second take has the absolute PERFECT sounding bass drum.
Totally agree, it's so tasteful
Soopa doopa garoovy mang!
Groove is undeniable
4:03 is just nasty ala Carlock... all these grooves are deep and fierce,... nice work Benny
This is an awesome video. It's really nice to see a brilliant drummer playing some tight and soulful grooves.
What a sick groove~
I've never seen anyone groove that good
yo. that wat i love about him.
his ghost notes for some reason are awesome!!!
this dude rules so hard
That's some TIGHT assed groovin.
This is how drumming should be.
Awesome job
Yeah. He's so smooth a musical.
and even when he solos, he's playing what fits at the moment, not out to show off his trademark techniques as some soloists would do.
its all about the feeling.
1 mic was placed as overhead, 1 mic was placed about 1 meter in front of the bassdrum
This is what it's all about. Just pure toe tapping groove!!
Yeah!!! Thats groove!!!!
I absolutely LOVE the groove @4:03 in this video.
this is hip hop
i saw benny doing a clinic last night in manchester, totally amazing player, a very funny guy too, and a wondeful sounding kit and cymbals.
insane...!!i love his drums set...!!!
Even though this is only two microphones, it sounds way better than most drum recording I hear entirely mic'd up. Doesnt sound fake.
I love all his snares!
its the amazing ghost noting that makes it so tasty and groovy. amazing work!!!
Benny Greb is an amazing drummer for sure :)
Great grooves by a great drummer!!
It's something about Benny's playing that makes even the most simplest grove sound so tasty. This man KNOWS music.
some of these grooves are fucking infectious. epic!
My favorite drummer
i would describe his style....benny greb.
I loooove minnemann and mangini both, but I do agree. If you can't lay down a solid groove, it doesn't matter if you can shred it.
the most in the pocket drummer i have ever seen
Pure unadulterated talent!
man those ghost notes are crazy
it says in the description: "The sound has been recorded with only two room-microphones." It still sounds good to me though. snares are crisp, toms are warm.
@darktirador

this is encouraging because some of those groves wernt out of my reach yay!!!
i have to say that sonor make some fine sounding drums !!
oh godddd, that pocket is so deep. hot damn.
puro espectaculo...
so dope.
Diggin' da 3 piece Bro. Nice Pocket...
i cry
@sweetfly66 I agree completely sir thank you for pointing that out.
Oh man, thank you Vicfirth5bb. That sounds really accurate. I'll give it a try and see if I can sound anything like the Grebman. Take care!
what a bass drum
Very solid grooves!
This show's so much more of what a drummer can do than just a random drumsolo.
It's noy even in an odd time signature although great songo fill. This vid is awesome. Everytime i get bored on drums i just think about this vid and just make up my own random groves.
He wasn't really trying at 2:05
I agree, real resonant tuning.
@rootvalue, it looks and sounds like the first fill is RRL and the second fill is LLRL with the last note of the second fill being accented. It fits the motion too. But I could be terribly wrong. :P
he is soooooooooooooo groooooovy .,., :)
His groove is amazing and really deep...Beside this, I really dont get how this drum sound could be done with only two ROOM mics? Isnt a bass drum mic there? strangely the camera never shows all the kick drum, but in some takes it seems to be something like a mic leg there... what do you think?
it was really only 2 room mics used for this video.
One as overhead mic and one approx. 1 meter in front of the bassdrum.
kit isn't big, so two mics is doable
+drumstudio2000 Because there is just drums and no music, you don't need to enhance say the klick of the kick to make it audible through the music. And if you look at old recordings the whole shit is recored in the same room witch 1-4 mics and it works

or just really really good mics and consistent kick velocity lol
1:08-1:29 so freaking awesome, thats exactly the style I like to play
@sticksanddrums1 no need for drum dial..i have a sonor 18x17.5 kick and it sounds like a cannon..depending on the heads you have, i use this method..i tune the front head a little tighter than batter head..and for the size i'm using, i have a clear powerstroke 3 and a fiberskyn 3 on the reso head..it sounds killer.. and it has that open jazz sound you seek, but yet versatile enough that you can play almost any style with that sound..tight , punchy, with just enough low end "boom" and resonance!

1:10 and 1.47 ❤️
Simple jet brilliant!
hell ya. 2 of my fav drummers going at it... id like to see them at gc's drumoff
oh and i love how fat the tone is of his snare at the :11 clip
As soon as I saw it, and before I saw this comment, I thought it was RRLK, with the K being on the down beat. It may not be correct, but played right, it will give the same sound. Hope that helps.
Benny Greb. The narrowest head, but fattest grooves!😂👌🏼
i think the kit sounds great
@darktirador No. He has a special connection the the brains of us so that he makes us think that he did so.
i love the crash sound. A Meinl Byzance, but I'm not sure of the size.. maybe a 20".. it's pretty big..
exactly! btw: when this vid was filmed, the extra dark etc. weren't even released!
logic grooves!!
great patterns
1.47 love that
he uses pro line drumsticks too? those are my favorite.
i think he also uses byzance extra dry at times now also. search for meinl byzance dark, that video is great. it will also give a whole mess of other videos in the "more from" and "related videos" sections from meinl. most of their lines are displayed in these videos. they really showcase the cymbals characteristics. way better than going to a companys web site and clicking either "performance" or "choke" hits, haha.
That drumble at 1:52 is awesome.
KaffeekocheR1 is right there's no best drummer or best in what ever in the world because there's always someone "better" so it's "better" to say being "better" is being the best because the word best is a conclusion while "better" is progress
(some kinda metaphor), lol. all hail benny!..
dooooope.
What a snares!!!!
@rootvalue Yo, that's essentially what they call a Drag... often played LLR, he actually plays RRL the first time, then the second plays LLR
Fat beats, I dig it!
well benny only uses sonor drums so it's most likely a sonor drum, but i can't tell u what type it is, his normal kit is an SQ2 custom kit, so he might of ordered it in or something, anyway, hope that helped a little
