Is there a certain way to hold the durm sticks
The fact that this man counted out an entire solo is just ridiculously impressive
Brooooooo im telling u his left leg is another human being.....
Although I total believe he could count out an entire solo, I'm sure that he had a guide track counting for him separate from the mix playback we just heard..
I'm an ex-young italian drummer and I liked very much your mental approach to the drum . What about you stile? Is simply fantastic. Good luck !
I'm a bassist who stumbled over here to learn some more about what the drummer is thinking and improve my own sense of rhythm/timing. This lesson is outstanding and packed with transferable knowledge. Loving it
Can't do it without that bass. A drummer's best friend!
Good on you dude! Not only is that a smart strategy in general, but you also could not have picked a better person to glean that knowledge off of IMO.
That half bar rest at 3:28 is brilliant. One of those "you SURE you're paying attention?" moments.
not only is this guy masterful, he seems like he would be an awesome dude to have a beer with!
thats his german side comming out
You could not say it better, but I do not drink hahaha
thats true!!!
You don't say!
He would be cool to hang with but he said himself he doesn’t really drink
My favorite part of the lesson was when Benny talked about not having a "music background" and thinking that maybe he "doesn't have it." I have had those doubts in the past and occasionally still do, but the at the end of the day, it comes down to the effort you show and the dedication you have. That's a message I think all drummer and musicians and PEOPLE should really apply to their lives in their own ways.
He lies like Friedrich Nietzsche !!!😁two geniuses . You can't forget your life but must get over it

Drumeo "Time" and "Feel" sections. On the other hand you must be as perfect as
possible metronome for a band. On the other hand without great "internal
mix" between hats, ride, crashes, ghost notes, rimshots and kicks
entire song will sound weak without groove and drive.
I love this its soo awesome that you guys got benny greb holy moly! Now everyone wants chris coleman :) cmon drumeo!
Drumeo "Time" and "Body" sections are my favourites. "Time" because, in my opinion, Benny Greb explains the concept of time and how to develop your internal metronome better than other drummers. "Body" was also so interesting because no one until now had never explained that concept.
Drumeo Favorite parts are the "Time" and "Open Drum Solo". Benny is a savage and a huge inspiration in the drumming community. Thanks Drumeo for having him!
Drumeo Thank you so much for the index!
This dude rules.
I have translated some golf into drumming ,relax, visualize and execute .don't get in your own way thinking too much . It helped me.
This dude grooves
@JoshSteffen YOU ARE RAD DUDE!
I really dig your stuff man.
Your Skeletons Of Society video got my attention, I probably watched that 30-40 times man.
I've been playing drums 8 months now.
Dude, I've been playing guitar in bands, writing my own songs for 28 years.
I was never entirely happy with any drummers I'd played with in a bands.
I come from a family of drummers also.
I am astounded at how much better of a guitar player I've become almost by not playing the guitar and playing the drums,
it's hard to explain.
I'm a huge Primus fan also dude, Larry LaLonde and Dave Navarro were why I actually burned those midnight hours on the fretboard in the very beginning,
"the birthing"- Dude that's a cool title for
a Korn inspired song!!
The original Korn drummer is a huge influence in my strike & groove.
And Joey Jordison.."One more time M'fer"
You nailed that song, that's dope AF homie!
So much love Josh!!💯
If my teacher’s would have incorporated mind, breathing, and spirit like he does…
Indeed
Benny is a groove master. Cool thing is I understand and feel all of the rhythms he does. I think I’ll play almost-almost as good as him one day
Drumeo I'm sorry I'm such a poor musician that I can't afford a subscription.
With that said, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THESE LESSONS AVAILABLE ON HERE FOR FREE!!
Subscribing is free,take care.
@@markdemell3717 you just changed this mans life
Whoever disliked this might as well throw their kit into the sun.
It's a blast to watch. but it's not really a lesson. Greb is an awesome communicator, but while I find this video very interesting to watch, I don't find it very coherent at all. It's basically concept, described in a very concrete manner, followed by a Greb groove that only tangentially connects to the description.
Don't have people throw their kits into the sun, they should give the kits away to people who want to play drums.
I think Benny IS giving a lesson, it's just not organized as a specific lesson, per se.
Must be all guitarists.
Hahaha ok. This dude is new to me ,he has a weird style ,I like weird.
He isn't just a great drummer, he is a great person.
In reply 2 Daniel don't have a clue what kind of person Benny Greb is besides his German?.
This guy is the one of the most important modern drummers in the world.
No he isn't.
Yes he is
Ken Clarke he may not be the most popular to listen to, but his style and use of different sounds is so unique that it could inspire a whole generation of new drummers
@Ken Clarke Important, as in he's influenced lots of the more popular drummers in the world. And he's very well known in the Jazz Drumming, but in mainstream music, he's definitely not well known.
@Ken Clarke There have been musician's musicians since forever. Some of them are remembered, some don't. It doesn't make any difference. Skill is skill.
I have always struggled to reflect what happens in practice in the gig . Love the lessons apart from the regular drum exercises . Amazing Teacher .
Soundzman CONGRATS Soundzman, your comment was one of the three chosen to win a signed copy of Benny's new DVD "The Art & Science Of Groove"! A private message has been sent with more info :)
Drumeo Wow . Thanks Guys for the DVD and all the videos....Love it
Soundzman you lucky bugger.
+Soundzman Lucky dude!
not only is this guy masterful, he seems like he would be an awesome dude to have a beer with!
I’m listening to this through $400 headphones and the mix is noticeably awesome. Props to whoever is is mixing this
Benny: “oh you want a drum solo?”
Also Benny: *wins guitar center drum off*
This is a good example of a great drummer. He doesnt overplay it too much, he keeps the groove through the whole song.... cheers
Benny Greb is a generational talent, with the even greater talent to teach. Brilliant.
That's it. I'm fully convinced he's the best drummer alive now.
Jared Weems Have you watched Weckl and Colaiuta substantially before making this decision?
I have watched both of them, and I much prefer Benny, but it's not a competition, everybody can have their own idea of who is the best.
Garstka boys
ledgy69 Chris dave bro
Jojo Mayer shits on everyone's head. Literally. The guy is an either-you-get-inspired-or-you-drop-the-sticks-forever type of destruction machine, I don't think anyone can compare. Cindy Blackman is basicly a force of nature. Todd Sucherman has that humble virtuoso type of playing that you just can't pay for. Jack DeJohnette flies over the kit. Ahri Hoenig plays melodies and the kit, even modulates that shit around. Virgil plays different subdivisions split between different members and does different odd groupings over that. Benny is very good, but he's still got a lot to learn compared to the Masters. That's why he's so humble: he knows he has a lot to learn, despite all he accomplised so far
this man is a musical genius!!!!!!!
The way Benny thinks is extremely insightful. So much gold without having to tell you "what" to play
Now that's what I'm talking about. He has a truly unique style.
Benny is one of the best "sounding" drummers to ever live.
Props to Drumeo for getting all these phenomenal drummers out there. Benny is incredible, as usual. And thanks to Jared in particular for being a good host.
P.S. Wish you'd have Gavin Harrison or Danny Carey next. Can never get enough of those.
He took a 2 minute solo in between the intro song. And after two minutes he landed exactly on the kicks...... This guy is a god. 😨😱
He is incredible but probably had a click track sent to his earphones, it's a little hard to see because of his headwear :)
Ksianth yeah, that must be it, cause no one is able solo for 2 minutes and then kand it exactly on the kick
To be honest, I can't perceive if you are being sarcastic or not but I will assume that way:p I did not suggest that and even if you have click playing in your ear, you still must play the exactly same number of bars every time which still makes it an amazing performance. I just felt like a click track is more likely.
No I wasn't being sarcastic. And the fact that (if it's true what you are saying though) he or any drummer uses a click track while playing these kind of things doesn't make the performance any less fantastic. Counting bars is indeed kinda difficult to do for two minutes while playing a solo.
There's also a chance that his in-ear mix could have some counts and cues like "Bridge, 2, 3, 4" and "Solo, 2, 3, 4" etc to help guide through the song. I'm not saying that's what he did, because if anyone can groove with an off-time feel for so long and still come back in on the beat, it's this guy, but I'm just throwing out another possibility!
For some reason I feel he is the happiest drummer I’ve seen, transmitting this happiness into the instrument and to the audience! That is what really inspires me.
This guy's got 3 hi hat cymbals going on. Sick! Loved this lesson. Chris Coleman next please!
Dave Rucki Fancy seeing you here
Dave Rucki How about you're up next and you break down your sick Inventure parts?
Dave Rucki Only one set of hi hats actually
The rest are just stacks
*****
No he means theres literally three hi hat cymbals haha. Two bottoms. One top.
This guy is so amazing. He focuses on the mental side of drumming, I love it
Drumming is %90 mental and the other half is physical. Yogi Berra .P.S. I know he said baseball.
Yeah but we should probably still focus on the physical side.
After watching Benny Grebs DVDs I have decided he is the Yoda of drumming
I’ve started practicing the drums everyday now at age 51, and I haven’t had any lessons except for what I’ve seen from you and a couple other great musicians and enjoy every minute of it. Keep your videos coming
Check out rob brown that guy is great
@@chrisryan91 I second this!
haha I love how Jared is completely fanboying Benny xD
It would be awesome if you got JP Bouvet on to do a lesson! :D All these Meinl Artists coming on after all.
Adam Salma too far
Douglas Choi and matt halpern :)
Yes jp is awesome!
Douglas Choi Yeah, & Jarion Da'Von too.. :D
Yes. Get JP. Meinl for the win. He'd be a very relatable example to drummers since he is so young and yet so successful.
Benns Greb is one of the most innovative and inspiring teachers and musicians of our time! This lessons are also great and usefull for every other musician, not only for drummers.
The masterclass I attended of his, at Drumeo, in 2015 was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life! He’s an incredible human being!
Benny is funny and top 10 influential players of our time. For a drummer I'd say that experience was super informative, insightful, and funny. If not a drummer, it would very likely be just as awesome of an experience, because the great Benny Greb is an unintentional comedian. I'd pay good money just to see a stand up with him!
@@paradiddle5150it was an experience I’ll never forget that’s for sure.
@@weightoawesome3455 I would be in awe if I was able to see him live. He and Anika Nilles are two German drummers that are exceptionally impressive and fluent
@@paradiddle5150 dude it was a 15 person, 3 day masterclass. We ate dinner every night together, hung out all day, chilled at the hotel in the evening. Then at the end of the masterclass, everyone got 2 mins to jam with him. I often wonder if he’d remember me now. He sure made a lasting impression on me!
@@paradiddle5150 Anika is absolute amazing too! I’d love to shake her hand!
We're giving away three copies of his new "Art & Science Of Groove" DVD. To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment sharing your favourite part of the lesson. We'll be choosing the winners sometime in June!
Drumeo my favorite part so far is that benny makes it all seems so fun!
Drumeo My favorite part was when I won the DVD!!! :D
Drumeo Great! For me this was first drumeo lesson, but not the first time I listen to Benny. My favorite parts were the time and feel, cuz was nice to lear some different ways of how to feel the time, in this case using the way you breathe.
Drumeo My favorite part is at 1:24:22 when Jared watches Benny with the "oh boy what is this" look
Drumeo My favorite part has to be Benny playing Grebfruit. Also as a german myself i liked how he sometimes used very typical german sayings and just translated them literally into english :D
It's hard to get 5 minutes into this thing, I just keep rewinding in amazement
Your stuck ,,,,,jump now.
I'm 60 years old, I've been a guitarist/singer for a long time but I started studying drums last year. I thank Benny for all his work and for the great help he is giving me.
Some day you will be a good drummer Benny, keep practicing! Practice makes perfect!
I'm just getting back into playing after many years away from it. I see just how good benny is and at the same time am encouraged that I can achieve this level of prowess at some point because of his teaching technique and overall laid back style. I'm not a pro, he is but i have ope that I can be that good at some point. Not to mention I really enjoyed the music he was playing along with. Thanks Benny for your encouraging way of teaching,I felt more like we were friends hanging out in your living room rather than a pro talking at someone who isn't as capable as you are.
One of the best drum lessons. So much simple and important stuff to take away
Are you into drums?
Yes

Benny Grebb, drum philosopher
With the name Benny Greb, he was destined for greatness. I thought he was in his 70's, and battled Buddy
O 8pm 0p...,
I've been doing yoga a lot for a year or two and one of the things my instructor makes me focus on is breathing throughout each move. I took a break from drums during this time and when I went back to my kit, I noticed I was holding my breath during fills. I adjusted and started to play with a better frame of mind, less stress and more enjoyment. I'm very glad Benny brought this up.
"When something really grooves, it's an outgrowth of empathy". I love this dude, so incredibly inspirational.
I have to get his DVD.
Coming back after 8 years again ! Im starting again and this used to be the few videos i watched then ! Nostalgic….! !
Thanks for bringing great drummers to us Drumeo! I never get tired of watching Benny do his thing!

This guy is just amazing, THANK YOU DRUMEO!!!!
Awesome ! Absolutely love Benny's playing!
Greb's album work is great - he has a very expressive way of playing with rhythm that doesn't deter the melodies or anything else. It's very fun.
Ich hab Benny Greb live in Hamburg gesehen. Mann der haut so dermaßen rein, das ist der Wahnsinn!
Benny Greb is my favorite drummer ever! Having a copy of his dvd would be a huge deal especially if it were signed! Great video! I learned A LOT!
Seriously, my favorite drummer ever. Seriously impressive, god like timing. From 3:25-5:05, 99.99% in the pocket the whole time.
What a musical drummer beautiful to watch and listen too
I love this - Interviewer is clearly a fan and it's wonderful to watch.
I could watch Benny play all day long. Such an inspiration.
The best sounding snares i've ever heard in my life!
Benny Greb is awesome!!!
What a fantastic drummer! And I absolutely love his cymbals
Such a great drum lesson. Thank you! I especially liked the way he compared certain beats to the rhythm of breathing. Really opened my eyes.
29:05 This is the most profound thing I have heard about drumming. Thank you Benny!
I didn't plan on watching this whole video. But Mr. Benny is so captivating, and precise at explaining. That, not only did i watch the whole video, i rewinded certain parts. This really is pure gold. Im so thankful that this exist at my fingertips.
Same! Thought about watching it for ten minutes and ended up enjoying the whole thing a lot.
thanks Drumeo. keep on going with your great interviews and invitations. you are inspiring us. Blessings from Colombia
Cant believe how great this is!! So much groove, why would anyone dislike this!?
Benny!! That fill at 59:59 into 1:00:02 Nearly stopped my heart! I love your approach to drumming with a scientific perspective. Truly amazing! I'm looking forward towards purchasing your DVD. Thank you Benny for taking your time and energy to compose this learning curriculum, and thank you Jared for continuing to have an open platform available to enlighten drummers abroad worldwide.
Benny gets me inkling to jump on a set and... believe it or not.. PRACTICE! Thank you for this video and THANK YOU BENNY! To my next drum session with Mind, Feel, Flow, Sound, and TO SOLO!

Great work Drumeo and of course great teaching and playing Benny Greb. Worth paying for!
A hit is never late, nor is it early, it arrives precisely when Benny G. mean it to.
best drummer I've known so far
Stopping the bacKing track, and incorporating a small trumpet fill into the drum solo has to be one of the most ingeniuos, impressive, and entertaining flex I have seen.
one of the most amazing online drum lessons ever.
bravo Benny!
Dang!!! Pocket, groove, solid, and just plain amazing!!

That was so so GOOD!!! Great drumming, great music !!!

Where can I get "Next Question" as a play along?
Drumeo So where's Jared's Grebfruit cover?
That side snare isn't just fat, it's morbidly obese.
He cheats a little bit :) If you watch closely you can see that on top of the second snare lays an unmounted additional drum-head. This is like a dampening ring taken to the extreme.
Well yes that what makes a snare fat.
Your comment rules.
Josh Steffen you fucking rule :D

I can't say how many times I've watched this video just for the opening. Benny's probably my all time favorite drummers.
Benny is just ridiculously amazing and "grooves" like no other!! Thank you for your refreshing and somewhat unconventional approach to drum instruction and theory!!
one of the best lessons to date in my opinion.
jojo mayer could add up to that ;-)
I'm a guitarist, i can drum for shit....but this vid was amazing!!!! Really helped me out in thinking the way of programming drums when im doing that.
Awesome vid, awesome drummer!
So many great ideas to incorporate. Thx Jared, Benny and Drumeo
I like how you break it down into 5 different categories. i love how you talk about how anything life like has movement of breathing in and out. Phrasing and fills in music need that! Thanks for a great lesson!
Amazing...

Drumeo Thank You guys! :) I replied in PM.
Great lesson. I have been playing since 1968 and I never fail to learn so much from your website. Thank you so much for what you do.
Deep sight in the basic elements of rhythm and music. Awesome teacher.
The first song of the video, WHAT A GROOOOOVE! Where does this genius drummer come from???
Germany ;)
Hi Jared, thank you for such a great video, i was wondering if you could give us the exact cymbals Benny was playing, i can see cymbal stacks in there but i wanted to know the models and sizes of each one.
Thank you, and long live to Drumeo!
That look on 5:21 and the appreciation after that killed me. It's really cool to find video's like this where you see somebody doing something with so much feeling and talent (and obviously an amazing amount of practice). I have nothing with drumming. But this guy is something special. Amazing
The best teacher I have ever seen. Thanks a lot for share your wisdom on drums.
i think every drum video is shoes commercial
Underrated comment. Makes me wonder if any of the drummers that do these sorts of things regularly have a shoe deal?
haha :-)
I *think* Stan Bicknell does have a shoe deal.
