  • BMW’s liter-class-sized S 1000 XR was a home run hit when it debuted five years ago. The German bike brand wants to capitalize on the success by introducing a smaller and more manageable version in the 2020 BMW F 900 XR (starting at $11,695). Positioned alongside the F 900 R naked bike, which we recently test rode during the 2020 BMW F 900 R Review First Ride, the Bavarian brand is keen on giving middleweight adventure-sport riders something to lean on.
    --
    2020 BMW F 900 XR Vs. F 900 R
    The XR shares the basic underpinnings of the R model, including its punched-out 895cc parallel twin (based off the powerplant inside the F 850 GS) and shell-type alloy frame and swingarm. However the XR benefits from longer-travel suspension, more upright and relaxed riding ergonomics, and a touring-friendly front fairing with manual two-way-adjustable windscreen.
    These differences increase the roadworthiness of the XR, making it a highly suitable mount for riders looking to cover ground. The engine drinks from a larger-capacity 4.1-gallon fuel tank, now positioned above the engine (as opposed to the outgoing F 800’s beneath the tailsection setup). During fast-paced riding we recorded fuel mileage of 32 mpg. However, riding at a more sane pace delivers around 38 mpg. While we appreciate the XR’s added capacity, we still wish it carried more fuel.
    2020 BMW F 900 XR Riding Experience
    Twist the throttle and this compact twin impresses with its punchy power delivery and refined character. Like other modern parallel twins (aka the Austrian brand’s LC8c mill) the Motorrad engine employs an uneven firing order designed to emulate the shake, rattle, and roll of a V-twin. In fact, engineers did such a marvelous job-you’d be hard-pressed to tell that the engine isn’t a V-twin from behind the handlebar. The XR grunts off the line and delivers a playful note that begs for hard riding antics. The gearbox meshes between each of its six cogs with absolute precision and we adore the feel and properly weighted cable pull of the clutch. For riders seeking an even slicker shifting setup, BMW offers its Gear Shift Pro (electronic quickshifter) as an option.
    Ripe with adjustment, every control surface of the BMW can be tweaked based on rider preference. Motorrad also offers a variety of seat height and density options for a custom fit. Height-challenged riders can also purchase a suspension lowering kit straight from the factory. Speaking of suspension, the Showa-sourced fork is one of the better nonadjustable front suspension components we’ve ridden on lately and the linkage-less rear shock offers a handy remote-preload adjustment knob which makes for easy ride height tweaks.
    Despite its hefty claimed 483-pound curb weight, the XR impresses with its above-average agility and comfort over bumpy surfaces. The OE-fitted Michelin Road 5 GT tires are a tad more squishy feeling as compared to the F 900 R’s awesome Bridgestone Battlax S21 shoes, but it’s a small gripe.
    Electronics-wise the XR employs a huge 6.5-inch color TFT dash display. Loaded with features, this screen offers crisp and BMW-standardized fonts that can easily be read day or night. Instead of touchscreen functionality, the rider uses BMW’s proprietary handlebar-mounted multi-wheel control to manipulate settings. Additionally the rider can pair the motorcycle to their smartphone using BMW’s free BMW Motorrad Connected app. The easy-to-use app allows for turn-by-turn navigation and other handy settings like remaining fuel range.
    Our 2020 XR was outfitted with BMW’s optional Ride Modes Pro option ($350) which unlocks Dynamic and Dynamic Pro riding modes. These settings complement the standard Rain and Road global settings that control engine response, ABS, and ASC, facilitating more intimate engine response, and IMU-powered ASC (automatic stability control) and ABS. We were hard-pressed to feel a difference between either dynamic setting, but we were pleased with the intuitive calibration of both settings that reward hard-charging riding. Riders can also manually disable ASC, however contrary to BMW’s other motorcycles ABS is fixed.
    If you’re seeking a versatile do-it-all-style streetbike, BMW makes a hard case for its 2020 F 900 XR. Equal parts fun, comfort, and functionality, this Beemer is the type of streetbike that can fulfill multiple roles. However, for a $2,700 premium is it that much better than its awesome F 900 R sibling? If a full front fairing and a more upright riding position are your cup of tea, you’ll be happy with this Berlin-built middleweight.

    I fitted my previous bike, Ninja 650 with the same Michelin tires this XR comes stock with and I gotta say, I’ve never felt more confidence riding in adverse conditions, sometimes in the middle of a downpour! Obviously you still have to engage the throttle carefully over painted lines, but considering the Ninja had no electronic rider safety aides yet felt secure enough on my bike to commute daily on, ya, for touring purposes, I 100% recommend them. Awesome BMW fits them on as standard 👌

    What I appreciate the most watching your videos is how California law allows for lane-splitting. Living in Florida is very difficult to enjoy riding a motorcycle, as it was designed to perform. We roast on traffic lights during the summer days and are always at risk of being rear-ended by idiots looking at their phones. What amazes me even more, is how some people in the motorcycle community are against lane-splitting. Travel a little will ya? It's time lane-splitting legislation went national. After riding motorcycles for over forty-five years, in a few different countries, this remains my number one "SMFH" item regarding motorcycle riding in the USA. Thank you for the great review and thank you for letting us know how we could potentially accelerate legislation in that regard. Way to go Utah, for signing lane-splitting into legislation.

    • @FxRiderST

      Split even it's not allowed. Stupid law made to be broken

    • @dennismanning6684
      @dennismanning6684 4 роки тому +4

      Utah surprisingly made a good start but hobbled it by only allowing "filtering" on roads under 55 mph, even if gridlocked. Only useful on city streets... but it's a start.

    • @Twentyfourvalves
      @Twentyfourvalves 4 роки тому +2

      @John R Borges HI John, I agree. That's why legislation is so important. That person "opening their door" at lane-splitters would have to think twice about it, if it was law. It would suck to be charged with Attempted Homicide due to being a hateful person, or simply an asshole. By the way, SMFH means "shaking my freaking head."

    • @Twentyfourvalves
      @Twentyfourvalves 4 роки тому +3

      @@FxRiderST Well, Felix, I wish it was that simple. But as John R Borges pointed out on this thread, we are in Florida. Here, we ride in a continuous state of defensiveness (as everyone should), but what sets us apart is that you never know when you may be attacked by a driver. I really mean that, attacked. IMHO (in my humble opinion) the volatility and surprise element of the Florida Man, makes him/her the most dangerous of all inhabitants, making alligators and deadly snakes the least of our problems. Sometimes, you may not be aware at all that you just pissed someone off in traffic and before you know, there's a guy talking funny and waving a gun on your face from the back-seat of his dad/friend/uncles' beat-up truck. It's sad, really. Still, if lane-splitting was allowed by law, I wouldn't be breaking it, and I would prefer it that way. Those hateful people wouldn't see me coming or going. Happy riding!

      Sorry guys, no hate involved whatsoever. After riding for 30 years and seeing what I have, I do understand risk and when to take it and when not. Judgment and wisdom take time if one can figure it out and know the difference. There are times to take risk, but certainly not during a motorcycle review because that's risky riding is a turn off. Not to say unnecessarily dangerous for the rider. Does anyone have a friend killed on a motorcycle? If you do, then you'll understand.

    I find the XR more comfortable than the R, and not really any less sporty. The choice between them is just preference. Not sure what you’re getting at with the tires. The Road 5 is a fantastic sport touring tire, the S21 is a true sport tire and not directly comparable. Neither is better or worse. There is also a Bridgestone T series offered on the XR, seems to be a 50/50 split between it and the Michelin. Not sure if the R offers a second tire option. Anyway, it was obvious you liked the R more, but to me the XR is like if BMW made a Versys 650 and that’s a big compliment.

    I am looking forward to a test ride on the F900Xr, but when doing a review, a comparison with other bikes in the segment / genre instead of it's baby bro, the r is more real world. Of course, you're a young man and commuting on the R would likely be a real hoot. Touring chops, comfort and pillion capability is real value added element...especially if you can only own one machine. The add on extra$ is typical BMW. Want everything included? The Yamaha Tracer 900 GT is a fine machine and probably is cheaper and cheaper to work on, but not necessary a bike that would likely hold its value / re-sale value as long as a BMW..

    soo... totally unrelated question. i got a scooter for my daily commute and the tires are fairly new, hard compound. now i pumped the tires so it barely deforms when i sit on the bike, and i noticed that now it quickly leans into corners compared to when the tires were softer. 80/90 14" on the front and 90/90 14" on the rears. am i doing this right or do i just reduce pressure again?

    • @MotorcyclistMag
      @MotorcyclistMag  4 роки тому

      adjust the tire pressure to what your motorcycle manufacturer recommends first. The numbers should be on a sticker somewhere on the scooter or located in the owner's manual.

    • @yourerightmybad7363
      @yourerightmybad7363 4 роки тому

      @@MotorcyclistMag wooah, didn't see this reply coming lmao. So, the tires are now on the recommended pressure, i guess that leaves the profile of the tires, since the contact area is rounded. The responses i got from a motorcycle forum suggested that i deflate the tires, but i think that is counter intuitive as it increases rolling resistance, and the fact that i chose this scooter as it is very fuel efficient. From one of your videos, my understanding is that flatter tires are "slower" to lean and doesn't lean much but is smoother, while a round tire profile facilitates quick transition into a lean and the bike wants to hold that lean. I don't mind the "heaviness" of the bike when it transitions to an upright position since the bike itself is light at 100kg. Did i get that right? It just seems odd that such a small, unsporty scooter with a tiny engine is very agile😅

The service interval for the valve check is 12000 miles for the Tiger and 24000 miles for the Tracer. The dealer quoted around $900 for the Tiger and $600 for the yamaha.
