I was on the field when this happened! I was a freshman at App State playing linebacker and due to 2-3 injuries to older more experienced players they dressed out 2 younger guys and let them travel rob Ann Arbour, me being one of those 2 players. I never played a single down on the field, but I was dressed on the sideline the whole game and it was so crazy!! Will never forget around 100,000 people going silent almost at once when we blocked the final field goal of the game to get the win. I ended up transferring to a different college right before my junior year due to injury, but those two years at App State are really special to me and I will def never forget this day!! I’m
I was in high school when this happened and I went to a football combine at App. We stood in front of the rock and everything was surreal. Got to play on the field and practice field. We stayed in the dorms closest to the field.
FCS schools were not eligible for the BCS, so no. The question is if this ended up helping them turn into an FBS school down the track, and to my knowledge, I don't think it did.
The Doom From Latveria they did become an FBS and a pretty good one at that. They may play in a relatively weak conference, but they still are competitive against Power 5 schools. This year they almost beat Penn State.
The best story about this game came across the AP wire the following day: "At approximately 2:00 AM Sunday morning, Appalachian State University campus security were alerted to reports of vandalism by the chancellor's office. The incidents stemmed from Appalachian State's historic upset over #5 Michigan earlier in the day Saturday. With the game being played at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI; the campus was largely desolate by game time Saturday morning. However, students and fans quickly descended upon campus in the hours afterwards to celebrate the surprising victory. Authorities ascertained that a drunken mob stormed Kidd Brewer Stadium-- despite the game having been played hundreds of miles away in Ann Arbor, MI --to tear down the goalposts of the Mountaineers home field. The raucous posse of intoxicated participants dragged the goalposts 4 blocks down University Blvd, reportedly singing Queen's 1975 hit song "We Are the Champions" the entire length of their celebratory march, before depositing the goalposts on the front lawn of the Chancellor's Mansion and scattering as campus security closed in. No other details are available at this time."
Haha old joke but a good one. I went to Virginia tech and when they got beat by a AA, the joke was “how many batteries does it take to light up Lane stadium? Just 1-AA”
No mention about how this loss caused Michigan to fall completely out of the top 25 in one of the biggest falls ... and how it also caused AP to allow FCS schools to be ranked in FBS polls?
Michigan never fully recovered after losing this game, they haven’t won the big ten, rarely are in the National championship conversation and even if they are, they get embarrassed by Ohio state or another big bowl game.
As a University of Delaware alumni, I have another fun fact to share with you all: In this same season, the Blue Hens made the FCS National Championship game, led by senior-year QB Joe Flacco (yes, that Joe Flacco). However, they couldn't bring the hardware home, as they were blown out by this same Appalachian State team.
People forget that Michigan also had nearly 500 yards, including 246 rushing yards in this game. They ran it early and often, but that sort of strategy backfires when you leave 12 points on the field with two blocked field goals and two missed two point conversions. Hats off to App State
@Marble League You're right, because Michigan was still a good team that year. 9 wins and a win in the Outback Bowl vs defending National Champ Tim Tebow and Florida.
I was at the Ohio State game at the same time this game was going on. As always when they showed updates of their game we would cheer and laugh. Our game ended first and they showed about the last few minutes of the game on the jumbo screen. Just looking around the stadium you’d think the game was still going on. Literally no one left their seats and we all sat and erupted with cheers when that kicked was blocked. I will definitely never forget that moment when we all sang We don’t give a damn for the whole state of Michigan on our way out of the Shoe.

It's such an incredible memory for me. My dad and I went "okay, sure. Let's go see Michigan play App State." The dog pile on the sideline happened right in front of us. Like, RIGHT in front of us. It will forever be ingrained into my memory.
I remember this game starting at 6am my time, and my dad woke me up right after the kick was blocked. We were excited, especially because Michigan was actually supposed to play Hawaii in the first week of that season, but the deal never went through. I'm glad App State gave them what they deserved though.
The loudest I ever heard Ohio Stadium was when this kick was blocked. The Bucks game had ended, and we'd been monitoring the score throughout the game. Everyone stayed, watching the game on the TVs in the concourse. The place erupted. It was wild.

As a person living 45 minutes from app state this was one of the most incredible games I've ever watched and to me the greatest upset in college football history
You left out the part where Michigan was originally supposed to play Hawaii for their home opener. Michigan backed out at the last second, purportedly due to fear of Hawaii's high flying offense and the rankings tumble losing at home to a WAC team would bring.

Great video. I was there. The one thing I wish you would have pointed out was the reporter when she was saying "When the Michigan players found out that they was playing Appalachian State" she went on saying more but that's not the point. The point is that you said Appalachian correct and she did not. Thank you for that.
Since it's the MLB postseason, how about Magglio Ordonez's ALCS Game 4 walkoff against the A's? Kind of a small moment, but given the Tigers' history coming into it, a memorable moment for sure. Yeah baby, App State! Go Mountaineers! Tied for number 1 straight national titles! And you even pronounced the name correctly. Pat yourself on the back, man.
I am a Michigan fan. I watched this video. In its entirety. I believe there is no greater compliment to the quality of these videos. Now excuse me, I need to cry.
The thing that's strange is at the time, I kept saying that it wasn't as big of an upset as people were saying, because App St weren't your typical FCS team, and that just because Michigan was good, that didn't render the opponent irrelevant (much like in basketball, where so many really good small teams get overlooked because "yeah but it's Duke" or "yeah but it's Kentucky" and people don't so much care that the non-famous team is also good, until they prove their point and win, but we let history repeat itself every time rather than remembering to think that there are two teams in the game). In hindsight it was actually pretty big more because of what it did to the landscape of the sport, but while it was definitely still an upset, I think App St could have been favored over about half the FBS teams that season. This is also coming from a Pitt alum, who was attending during a certain other big upset in 2007...
Jason Glasser Agreed. With hind-sight we can see it wasn’t *as big* of an upset. But I think it needs to be bore in mind that even today some people who solely follow P5 football still call FCS schools “D2 schools.” When in reality the upper tier of FCS schools are just as good, if not getter than mid-tier FBS schools. Heck, North Dakota State is STILL getting the cold shoulder from FBS programs for upsetting Ranked Iowa. What App St. did though was command respect for the FCS schools. Cause they showed anyone can be beat. I mean just last season The Citadel was tied with Alabama at halftime. The talent gap between FBS and FCS is shrinking rather quickly.
I still can't believe that Michigan lost that, I got BTN to watch Northwestern FB games so when I flipped to channel to see App State winning I was shocked. Best upset in CFB history.
It was the second game of a two way tie, the first one of which ended 4-0 in PSG's favor. It's probably the most absurd comeback over two legs in top level football, although it's a controversial game as the refereeing helped Barca quite a bit in the game they won. Would make a fun video.
I have read whole books about some of these Rewinder subjects that don't capture the essence of the critical situations as well as you guys do, just a phenomenal series...
Can you guys do NHL stuff? Like: - Alec Martinez’s Stanley Cup winning goal - Philly comes back down 0-3 against Boston - Boston coming back down 1-4 in 2013 to win in OT - Kane’s Stanley cup winning goal - Carolina winning the cup - Uwe Krupp’s goal - Marty McSorely’s stick
I was at the game. Quietest emptying of the stadium there probably has ever been. My friend and I didn’t say a word to each other for a few blocks. We were all stunned, still am.
And because of this, teams are afraid to schedule FCS dynasties like North Dakota State. Tose teams are really really good. App State had serious speed.
Love this series! Some ideas: -1980 US Olympic Hockey team win -Major Wright’s huge hit in the 2008 BCS Championship game against OU -Feleipe Franks’ Hail Mary to Tyrie Cleveland in the UF v. UT game in 2017 -1994 NHL Eastern Conference finals “Matteau, Matteau!” goal, Rangers v. Devils
Appalachian State was criminally underrated. Not all Division 1-AA teams are the same - they were two-time defending national champions and were favored to win their third in a row. Usually the best team in Division 1-AA is good enough to finish at least .500 in the Big Ten so they should have been given a decent chance of being competitive. A home conference game against a mid-table opponent is usually not considered a gimme, even if you're expected to win the conference.
For example it's the rough equivalent of Clemson losing at home against Pittsburgh or on the road against Syracuse. It's unexpected but it happens sometimes, and the games certainly weren't considered to be "gimmes" before they were played.
I remember fondly watching this game. An SC boy watching a close team on the first B10 Network game I’ve ever seen. (I shouldn’t have even been there but a strange turn of events allowed me to witness this.) I love this game and watch it at lest once a year.
Appalachian State was really good . I watched a lot of FCS games back then and they won the championship . Edwards was a beast Kevin Richardson was a great RB . My brother in law is a Michigan fan and I told him App State was gonna win and he laughed at me . Next time he saw me after that he wasn't laughing so much

FCS schools were not eligible for the BCS, so no. The question is if this ended up helping them turn into an FBS school down the track, and to my knowledge, I don't think it did.
i'm sure it was more their multiple D2/FCS championships that did it more than this one single game.

I always take a break in my day to watch these rewinds immediately, these are the best
Easily my favorite series on SB nation right now. Keep it up!
Yeah baby, App State! Go Mountaineers! Tied for number 1 straight national titles! And you even pronounced the name correctly. Pat yourself on the back, man.
I hate how the female on field reporter say it wrong.
Jason Glasser
Agreed.
This was BTNs first year I believe. I’ll never forget this game. As a Bucks fan it makes it that much more satisfying lol
Same for me as a Nittany Lions fan!
I still can't believe that Michigan lost that, I got BTN to watch Northwestern FB games so when I flipped to channel to see App State winning I was shocked. Best upset in CFB history.
Great video SB nation
Love the series. Would love to sea Barca 6-1 PSG
both big clubs .. why would such a mauling deserve a rewind ?
yes please
@@studiomangordon2933 they were both big clubs, but it doesn't ruin the fact that Barça came back from a 4-0 deficit
It was the second game of a two way tie, the first one of which ended 4-0 in PSG's favor. It's probably the most absurd comeback over two legs in top level football, although it's a controversial game as the refereeing helped Barca quite a bit in the game they won. Would make a fun video.
Yea
I have read whole books about some of these Rewinder subjects that don't capture the essence of the critical situations as well as you guys do, just a phenomenal series...
Can you guys do NHL stuff?
Like:
- Alec Martinez’s Stanley Cup winning goal
- Philly comes back down 0-3 against Boston
- Boston coming back down 1-4 in 2013 to win in OT
- Kane’s Stanley cup winning goal
- Carolina winning the cup
- Uwe Krupp’s goal
- Marty McSorely’s stick
1942 Toronto came back from 0-3 in the Stanley Cup Final.
Marty brodeurs goal too. Maybe the grind line for detroit. Russian 5 too but they prolly made one on them already
So glad they did this on my favorite UA-cam series
Do the 2008 Brazil Grand Prix!
Still hurts as a brazilian
I got chills when he said "Welcome to a moment in history" at the end :D All because I knew what would go down
So many things deserve a rewind. UA-cam is not one of them.
15 years later and pulled off another huge upset Saturday
This game changed the town of Boone forever.
I was at the game. Quietest emptying of the stadium there probably has ever been. My friend and I didn’t say a word to each other for a few blocks. We were all stunned, still am.
Where's the A&M fans at?
How hell is this not a movie yet?
I was there. It was dead silent, almost eerie.
As a Michigan fan and Appalachian student it’s very hard wearing anything Michigan related on campus
WE LIKE SPORTS AND WE DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS
This is the best series you guys have!
1:50 can’t even pronounce Appalachian correctly. “Appalaychian”, it bothers me so much considering I live in western North Carolina lol
These videos are very well made.
Rewinder Idea:
The 2007 Rockies incredible run to the pennant
And because of this, teams are afraid to schedule FCS dynasties like North Dakota State. Tose teams are really really good. App State had serious speed.
I watched this because I'm a Michigan State fan lol
OSU fan, don't think I've ever clicked in a video so fast
@@drewbilodeau3375 ahaha yeah, if there's one thing we have in common it's our hatred of UofM lmao
Same bro
You do know that same Michigan team beat you guys later that season?
Alex Jones and that Michigan state team beat them 8 out of the next 10 years
Great high quality videos. Love them. keep up the good work!
Okay now you gotta do Iowa’s Hail Mary against LSU
Love this series! Some ideas:
-1980 US Olympic Hockey team win
-Major Wright’s huge hit in the 2008 BCS Championship game against OU
-Feleipe Franks’ Hail Mary to Tyrie Cleveland in the UF v. UT game in 2017
-1994 NHL Eastern Conference finals “Matteau, Matteau!” goal, Rangers v. Devils
Would love to see 18-1 Pat's superbowl video
Loved this!!! This was the year they said they were going to win a national championship and everybody was on board with that. I was so happy
"IT'S A YARD SALE AT THE BIG HOUSE!"
I have a football signed by by Edwards cause he was in my moms class
I remember fondly watching this game. An SC boy watching a close team on the first B10 Network game I’ve ever seen. (I shouldn’t have even been there but a strange turn of events allowed me to witness this.) I love this game and watch it at lest once a year.
Do Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary against the canes in 84
I don’t remember the year but that time the USL Cajuns beats Texas AM was huge. Maybe mid to late 90’s?
It was 1996
I had a huge grin on my face throughout this video.
Appalachian State was really good . I watched a lot of FCS games back then and they won the championship . Edwards was a beast Kevin Richardson was a great RB . My brother in law is a Michigan fan and I told him App State was gonna win and he laughed at me . Next time he saw me after that he wasn't laughing so much
6:07 nice
I talk about this all the time. One of my faves
Please do Joe Carter's home run.
1:45 When they don't even respect you enough to pronounce your name right.
PLEASE DO A GODDAMN NHL REWINDER EPISODE
I absolutely love the videos you guys make
As a Ohio State fan I love this!
