Appalachian State’s historic upset over Michigan deserves a deep rewind

- 2007 was one of the weirdest seasons in college football, ever. It got started when Appalachian State rolled into Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines. They combined for an incredible game, but all we really remember is the blocked kick to end it. It overshadowed everything that led up to that moment, and is worth a deep rewind.

I was on the field when this happened! I was a freshman at App State playing linebacker and due to 2-3 injuries to older more experienced players they dressed out 2 younger guys and let them travel rob Ann Arbour, me being one of those 2 players. I never played a single down on the field, but I was dressed on the sideline the whole game and it was so crazy!! Will never forget around 100,000 people going silent almost at once when we blocked the final field goal of the game to get the win. I ended up transferring to a different college right before my junior year due to injury, but those two years at App State are really special to me and I will def never forget this day!! I’m
Good for you, bro. Glad you have that memory.
Armanti Edwards!
CoCo Hillary.
I was in high school when this happened and I went to a football combine at App. We stood in front of the rock and everything was surreal. Got to play on the field and practice field. We stayed in the dorms closest to the field.
Great Saiyaguy What’s your name dude?
Michigan: “who’s Appalachian State?”
Appalachian State: “your daddy”

@@razaark Great Comment!!
As an Appalachian student. I can confirm we still talk about this
Didn't Appalachian State eventually move up to the BCS through this win?
FCS schools were not eligible for the BCS, so no. The question is if this ended up helping them turn into an FBS school down the track, and to my knowledge, I don't think it did.
i'm sure it was more their multiple D2/FCS championships that did it more than this one single game.
The Doom From Latveria they did become an FBS and a pretty good one at that. They may play in a relatively weak conference, but they still are competitive against Power 5 schools. This year they almost beat Penn State.
I have the Sports illustrated from that week. It was impossible to find in North Carolina; a friend in Colorado sent it to me!
The best story about this game came across the AP wire the following day:
"At approximately 2:00 AM Sunday morning, Appalachian State University campus security were alerted to reports of vandalism by the chancellor's office. The incidents stemmed from Appalachian State's historic upset over #5 Michigan earlier in the day Saturday. With the game being played at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI; the campus was largely desolate by game time Saturday morning. However, students and fans quickly descended upon campus in the hours afterwards to celebrate the surprising victory.
Authorities ascertained that a drunken mob stormed Kidd Brewer Stadium-- despite the game having been played hundreds of miles away in Ann Arbor, MI --to tear down the goalposts of the Mountaineers home field.
The raucous posse of intoxicated participants dragged the goalposts 4 blocks down University Blvd, reportedly singing Queen's 1975 hit song "We Are the Champions" the entire length of their celebratory march, before depositing the goalposts on the front lawn of the Chancellor's Mansion and scattering as campus security closed in.
No other details are available at this time."
Legendary
I wish I was there to do it with them
I'm from NC, and my high school psych teacher was part of that drunken mob. It was a story he told our class with much pride
there's simply nothin like college sports
Yeah there’s a video on UA-cam about it
What kind of battery stops a Wolverine?
1-AA
Genius
Well played.
Haha old joke but a good one. I went to Virginia tech and when they got beat by a AA, the joke was “how many batteries does it take to light up Lane stadium? Just 1-AA”
That's stupid.
@@fatmanjonestv7143 at least Virginia Tech wasn’t ranked in the top 10 the year that upset happened, right?
No mention about how this loss caused Michigan to fall completely out of the top 25 in one of the biggest falls ... and how it also caused AP to allow FCS schools to be ranked in FBS polls?
It changed everything, not only for Appalachian and the town of Boone but for college football in general.
If it was Alabama not Michigan who lost they would have only dropped to number 6 ahaha
Kenneth Stegall So ridiculously true it’s not funny. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Bama only drop one spot after such a loss.
It's called Rewind. Not Fast Forward.
Michigan never fully recovered after losing this game, they haven’t won the big ten, rarely are in the National championship conversation and even if they are, they get embarrassed by Ohio state or another big bowl game.
As an App state grad, I was and still am stunned.
RJ Wohlman you gotta day my video is better.
Shaped Cobalt fawk no it’s not
Me too brother, Class of '82!
I was stunned, but as a Citadel cadet at the time, I knew App State was good. Didn't think they would even get close to beating Michigan though.
Big ups to the Michigan dude at the end running all out, with 0:00 on the clock and already defeated, to make that tackle before the end zone
It was the kicker too. Guess he wasn't having it after all that, lol.
@joe pa No. You're not just gonna stand there and let someone score on you.
@joe pa it actually says a lot about a person...either way
Kinda like Don Beebe running down Leon Lett in a lost cause situation in the super bowl that year. Go all out till the bitter end. Go down fighting
@@azd35 he was a linebacker after all
As a University of Delaware alumni, I have another fun fact to share with you all:
In this same season, the Blue Hens made the FCS National Championship game, led by senior-year QB Joe Flacco (yes, that Joe Flacco). However, they couldn't bring the hardware home, as they were blown out by this same Appalachian State team.
People forget that Michigan also had nearly 500 yards, including 246 rushing yards in this game. They ran it early and often, but that sort of strategy backfires when you leave 12 points on the field with two blocked field goals and two missed two point conversions.
Hats off to App State
@Marble League I'm sure those Penn state fans don't love App state anymore lol
Bruh I knowww. I’m a huge app fan and it sorta makes me made joe Flacco plays in the NFL and and everything while Armanti hardly had a shot.
It wasn't as huge of an upset as people think. That App State team would've beaten many FBS teams that year.
@Marble League You're right, because Michigan was still a good team that year. 9 wins and a win in the Outback Bowl vs defending National Champ Tim Tebow and Florida.
Imagine not only being upset at home by a school you don't even know, but also paying them $400,000...
A Painful $400.000 Embarrassing
Imagine the same, but 1.5 million
Congrats to App State on beating another top 10 team in 2022! I’ll always remember them beating Michigan
And then they upset James Madison this past year
I didn’t talk to anybody for a month...
MichiganMan I prob wouldn’t have either if I had watched CFB in ‘07
Go Buckeyes!
M sucks
We've all been there before, bro. No shame in it whatsoever. I'm an Alabama fan. I couldn't find a location far enough off the grid after the Kick Six.
The thought that you might genuinely be serious about this statement makes it so much funnier
This shocked the entire world. And it provided the backdrop for the most chaotic FBS season ever.
I was at the Ohio State game at the same time this game was going on. As always when they showed updates of their game we would cheer and laugh. Our game ended first and they showed about the last few minutes of the game on the jumbo screen. Just looking around the stadium you’d think the game was still going on. Literally no one left their seats and we all sat and erupted with cheers when that kicked was blocked. I will definitely never forget that moment when we all sang We don’t give a damn for the whole state of Michigan on our way out of the Shoe.
Get ready, with the new 12 team playoff system being implemented, wolverines and osu fans will be cheering each other on come conference championship time. If you want me to explain I will. Oh how interesting it will be!!!
I remember this game starting at 6am my time, and my dad woke me up right after the kick was blocked. We were excited, especially because Michigan was actually supposed to play Hawaii in the first week of that season, but the deal never went through. I'm glad App State gave them what they deserved though.
It's such an incredible memory for me. My dad and I went "okay, sure. Let's go see Michigan play App State."
The dog pile on the sideline happened right in front of us. Like, RIGHT in front of us. It will forever be ingrained into my memory.
I can only imagine how nuts the “Buckeyes” went when they saw that game!
I wad previously been watching the Buckeyes destroy my city's college team. Turning the channel in the football party at the bar to this game was deafening. When you go to the OSU vs TTUN pregame parties, I still see those purple flags from my favorite Buckeye trolls.
There’s plenty of videos on UA-cam of them celebrating in bars and I think Penn State they celebrated in the stadium
Oregon played at Michigan the next week in The Big House. They were so overconfident and worried at the same time. They dragged Michigan all over the field. Season over for them
Dunno what it was like at OSU, but East Lansing was a madhouse (I was a junior at MSU at the time). By the next Monday there was Appalachian State merch for sale EVERYWHERE on campus.
As a person living 45 minutes from app state this was one of the most incredible games I've ever watched and to me the greatest upset in college football history
You left out the part where Michigan was originally supposed to play Hawaii for their home opener. Michigan backed out at the last second, purportedly due to fear of Hawaii's high flying offense and the rankings tumble losing at home to a WAC team would bring.
I didn’t know Michigan backed out on Hawaii game wow
I was going to say, “This is the first time I’d even heard of BTN.” Well, I know why. I remember watching that game, going crazy, and immediately leaving for Berkeley to watch Cal beat Tennessee - a major highlight of that year.
11 years later, Appalachian State is in FBS, and I’m marching at Cal. Go Bears!
Dude I was at that game too. DJax's punt return was insane
Congrates, youre their robot now
I was there! My uncle is a App state grad and I remember him telling me we’re going to loose so don’t expect a lot. After they won people padded my uncle on my back and couldn’t believe we did it

Since it's the MLB postseason, how about Magglio Ordonez's ALCS Game 4 walkoff against the A's? Kind of a small moment, but given the Tigers' history coming into it, a memorable moment for sure.
If not, then the Rangers-Cardinals World Series or the Bautista bat flip would be wonderful ones as well.

It was the second game of a two way tie, the first one of which ended 4-0 in PSG's favor. It's probably the most absurd comeback over two legs in top level football, although it's a controversial game as the refereeing helped Barca quite a bit in the game they won. Would make a fun video.

@@CraigMcGuinnit’s bucks. As in ‘buckeyes’
The thing that's strange is at the time, I kept saying that it wasn't as big of an upset as people were saying, because App St weren't your typical FCS team, and that just because Michigan was good, that didn't render the opponent irrelevant (much like in basketball, where so many really good small teams get overlooked because "yeah but it's Duke" or "yeah but it's Kentucky" and people don't so much care that the non-famous team is also good, until they prove their point and win, but we let history repeat itself every time rather than remembering to think that there are two teams in the game). In hindsight it was actually pretty big more because of what it did to the landscape of the sport, but while it was definitely still an upset, I think App St could have been favored over about half the FBS teams that season.
This is also coming from a Pitt alum, who was attending during a certain other big upset in 2007...
Jason Glasser
Agreed. With hind-sight we can see it wasn’t *as big* of an upset. But I think it needs to be bore in mind that even today some people who solely follow P5 football still call FCS schools “D2 schools.” When in reality the upper tier of FCS schools are just as good, if not getter than mid-tier FBS schools. Heck, North Dakota State is STILL getting the cold shoulder from FBS programs for upsetting Ranked Iowa. What App St. did though was command respect for the FCS schools. Cause they showed anyone can be beat. I mean just last season The Citadel was tied with Alabama at halftime. The talent gap between FBS and FCS is shrinking rather quickly.
Can you guys do NHL stuff?

I don't understand why Appalachian state would get paid by Michigan to play the game
A lot of FBS schools will schedule schools in the division below theirs (FCS) as essentially tune up games before they start playing the tougher schools. Because FBS schools tend to have more scholarships/money/talent to lead to bigger and better players, it's a tough sell for the smaller school. To make it worth it for both sides, the smaller school gets paid which can then help them build their program or go to their school, as well as the promotion they get for being on a bigger stage. In hindsight, it worked a little differently for this game.
I had a huge grin on my face throughout this video.
My Michigan Wolverines seem to not be the same since then. Long time Coach Lloyd Carr retired (forced to), Rich Rod was a disaster, and Harbaugh doesn't even come close to living up to the hype!
No matter what Michigan video you guys put up, I know it'll hurt hahah 😂

Who’s here after App State beat Texas A&M in 2022? I was in a Texas Roadhouse in NC watching that game unfold and when they won, the crowd went insane, and I thought back to this game right here
I played Middle LB at Appalachian state for 4 seasons from 2007-2010. Was fortunate enough to be offered a full scholarship (chose it over my other offers from Catawba College, Presbyterian University, Wofford College, The Citadel, Middle Tennessee State, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, ECU, Georgia Southern, Furman, Georgia State & Florida International Univ. as someone born and raised in the Carolinas (Charlotte suburb) I received most of my offers from mostly NC/SC schools or adjacent states like Georgia and Tennessee etc. my biggest offers were Middle Tennessee State and ECU (app is bigger and better than both of those schools now in terms of football…but back then app was still 1AA. But they had won 3 consecutive FCS titles and were almost like the Alabama of the FCS. They are D-1 now of course. l never red shirted, My freshman year I was 2nd string Middle LB behind a 5th year senior BEAST OF A LB. I never once touched the field but since I was the first backup I did travel to Ann Arbor to watch that game from our sidelines. One of, if not the most incredible day of my life…listening to 100,000+ people go silent once J. Lynch blocked that FG to seal the win. We partied for a whole week once we got back to Boone it was soooo fun. Since then they’ve upset a ranked Syracuse team, almost upset a ranked UNC team in OT, DID upset a POWERHOUSE #6 ranked Texas a&m AT their house…winning 17-14 but dominated them much more than the scoreboard showed. We had 1 player who was either a 4 or 5 star player. Texas a&m had over 50 4 & 5 star players!!!! That’s INSANE. Not quite as good as the Michigan upset since they were in ranked higher and were the favorites for the natty since over 75% of their best starters returned to get that championship ring/trophy. Instead they got Molly whooped. Of course there is now talk of moving App State to the ACC. I would LOVE that
