Texas Tech alum here. Yes, Mike Leach was the best coach in program history. He was not only the winningest coach in program history, he made Tech relevant. During his tenure from 2000 to 2009, Texas Tech was the only program in the Big 12 that was bowl eligible every season. Not Texas, not Oklahoma. He is the only coach in program history to have beaten in-state rivals Texas and Texas A&M in the same season twice (2002 and 2008). Leach's teams actually had a 7-3 record against the Aggies. After all that, he was fired the next season in a BS political move by AD Gerald Myers and Chancellor Kent Hance.
Hmm, I think this is because prior to 06 - if I understand correctly - to become bowl eligible you couldn’t have a losing record at any point throughout the season and in 05, Oklahoma was 1-2 and 2-3 early in the season. That was their second worst season from 00-09 and they finished 8-4 after beating Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. Their worst season during that stretch was 8-5, the year Sam Bradford was in and out from injury (09) and they beat Stanford in the Sun Bowl. Though I guess the first game didn’t count against bowl eligibility because Texas Tech lost their first game in 02 making them 0-1 but they went 2-1 immediately afterwards, so their record didn’t get worse than .500 after that (2-2 through first 4 games). Another theory I have is in 2007, the NCAA ruled that Oklahoma had to vacate every win from 2005 due to two players receiving money from a local car dealership in Norman, so there was a time their record showed they finished 0-4 that season, though that was appealed by Oklahoma and the decision was reversed in 2008. The reversal makes me inclined to think that doesn’t factor into it unless some source isn’t acknowledging the reversal or just hasn’t had their system updated in over 15 years.

The main thing that got Oklahoma in over Texas was their non-conference schedule, with wins over TCU (ranked #11 going into conference championships, final rank #7) and Cincinnati (ranked #13 going into conference championships, final rank #17). When you say historically that means in the history of that football program. So, you either used the title as clickbait or don't understand the correct way to use the word historically. Definitely like this video, but I’m gonna put an oldie on this list. 1998 Arizona. They played one bad game, and considering how weird that year was, they would conceivably have competed for the National Title. They finished 12-1 with their only loss being to a really good UCLA. It was just a lot of bad luck. UCLA got beat up at the end of the season and their defense became a sieve, leading to that infamous Rose Bowl against Wisconsin and leading to the coming out party of Ron Dayne. Needless to say, the 50-42 win over Arizona State is still one of the best games in the rivalrie’s history.

The 2000 Oregon State Beavers team was a magical team as well. The 1999 team had ended one of the longest winning droughts in NCAA history, with their first winning season in 29 years and first bowl appearance in 25 years. In 2000, it was expected that the team would MAYBE make another bowl game. Instead, they turned in arguably the best season in school history, with their only loss of the year being AT #3 Washington on a missed FG. Outside of that, the 2000 Beavers DOMINATED their opponents, including then #6 Oregon who had beaten Washington, forcing future #3 Overall Pick Joey Harrington into 5 INT's and a lost fumble. The Beavers then completed their magical run by utterly dismantling Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl. The season propelled OSU into over a decade of winning tradition, with 8 winning seasons and 5 bowl wins over the next 11 seasons. Note: If you want footage from that season, there is an old VHS video full of highlights and voiced by Legendary OSU play-by-play announcer Mike Parker that was uploaded to UA-cam a few years ago. Type in "Oregon State Fast Track to the Fiesta" and it should be the first thing that pops up. It has highlights from every game from that season and coach/player interviews.
I like Oregon State a lot. But the biggest whiff I've ever seen a preseason mag make was in 01 when SI picked Oregon State as the preseason number 1, and they went 5-6. What happened that year? I was 14 and barely remember.
@@GoHawgs1987 What happened was OSU should've never been #1 LOL. We had lost a TON that offseason. WRs Chad Johnson, TJ, Robert Prescott AND TE Martin Mauer were all gone, along with virtually the entire offensive line. We had a couple guys back on defense, but we lost a few key guys there too. The main issue for that OSU team was that the previous 2000 squad had been made up of largely Seniors and 1-year Transfers, and they were all gone. Without a stout O-Line, Ken Simonton couldn't run the ball. And Jonathan Smith couldn't throw if no one could get open. Just a very young team with expectations set far too high. Still, they rebounded nicely in 2002, and then Riley took them over in 2003.
Gotta include Temple in their stretch from 2015-2016. The trash of all trash programs for over 100 years. Actually got to double digit wins beating Pennsetate after a 70 game losing streak to them. 2016 they also got to 10 wins including a conference championship, first one in exactly 50 years. Minnesota has one from 1960 and the rest are during ww1 and ww2
Sure they exist
But that’s like saying yale is a powerhouse because they have the most national championships
@@FloatedBranch Yale's championships were mostly uncontested
All of the U of M's championships were against major competition.
try like 1904
@@extragoogleaccount6061 I mean that national championship was weird because it was before the AP poll but it's a shared title between Minnesota Michigan and upenn
The 2008 Big 12 South tiebreaker went to the fifth tiebreaker, as all three teams went 7-1 in conference play, and all three went 1-1 against each other. The tiebreaker was their BCS ranking. Oklahoma was #2, Texas was #3, and Texas Tech was #7. The main thing that got Oklahoma in over Texas was their non-conference schedule, with wins over TCU (ranked #11 going into conference championships, final rank #7) and Cincinnati (ranked #13 going into conference championships, final rank #17). Oklahoma beat these two teams by 25 and 26 points.
A playoff back then would've been sick
@@Amateurloree A 12 team playoff back then would've been:
5 USC vs 19 Virginia Tech
6 Utah vs 12 Cincinnati
7 Texas Tech vs 10 Ohio St
8 Penn St vs 9 Boise St
The teams with a bye would be #1 Oklahoma, #2 Florida, #3 Texas, and #4 Alabama.

i LOVE football lore and this video itched just the right parts of my brain. thanks for the video!
2020 Indiana ranked #7 and they have the worst P5 all time win % & 2007 USF was ranked #2 mid season
The Crabtree touchdown is a core memory for my football loving journey
me too
loved the video, if u make an other one a team id like to see is the 2015 temple owls
2016 Western Michigan. Can you do a video on "Best games that no one watched", like Sept 11, 2021 Wyoming at Northern Illinois
Man I didn't know 733 wins, 7 national championships, 18 Big 10 titles, competitive in 3/4 major rivalries, and a Heisman trophy winner is historically bad.
Haven’t been good since my grandparents were kids, at this rate we may as well say Yale is a powerhouse team too, be for real now
Don’t nobody care about them segregation nattys

When you say historically that means in the history of that football program. So, you either used the title as clickbait or don't understand the correct way to use the word historically. Otherwise, you wouldn't include program that has claimed 7 National Championships in their history (1904, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941 and 1960). In fact, they're still the only team to have accomplished the three-peat in titles.
Okay great they won 7 championships with their most recent being almost 70years ago, they have been mediocre in recent history like it or not with only 2 win seasons being in 03 and the 19 season
@@C.Cline05So they are historically good, so not terrible?
@@C.Cline05 What, they're not great, but they've had 12 winning seasons since the year 2000. Where did you get 2??

Hawaii with Colt Brennan went 12-0. Make a video about that season!
I remember watching that Texas Vs Texas Tech game on Halloween night. One of the best games I’ve ever watched.

I was there for the penn state game at Minnesota, greatest football memory of my life

most likely I dont really look im just trying to make videos I enjoy
bro said we done baby sitting our drinks, we gets lit in the Big 12 😂
The person making this video is a young Florida fan. It seems, if your team hasnt won a title in his lifetime, your team is considered "historically terrible." It is worth noting TTU is coming off its worst decade in program history. Wreck 'Em, regardless.
I cant lie you are speaking facts the gators are BBL ass ....but I love em
16 years later I'm STILL triggered by Texas Tech's 2008 win against Texas
Im still triggered F'ing Billy Napier its still the coach of florida
Ngl this is one of my new fav channels, also wreck em tech and rip Mike leach
I remember telling everybody before the 2019 season that Minnesota would be the surprise team in the Big Ten that year and during that first four game stretch thinking these mf's are making me look stupid now, but they finally turned it up and didn't make a liar out of me. It was a great season for them.
ROFL I'm a former Golden Gopher, I remember that 2019 season well. They were just scraping by their FCS cupcake opponents and I was like "well, at least they won, hopefully they can find 3 conference wins and get bowl eligible." Then a few weeks later, we were talking about them crashing the CFP (which obviously didn't even come close to happening, but at least we got to dream for a few days)
team of destiny
for 75% of the season lol
where do u find all this vintage game footage?
UA-cam
I went to the game when Tech blew out KU, was in 8th grade at the time. Went with my uncle and was listening to the radio on the drive up. Never forget the student section leaving at halftime. Tar Heel fan now but it was a fun experience at the time. 🙌🏾
some of my best memories are from college football games ive seen on tv
UNLV looks like they are going to have a magical one this year
would be dope to see
Lifelong resident of lubbock and I was working at the our hospital and during the last 5 minutes of the game that building stood still.

Minnesota’s claimed National championships : 1904 1934 1935 1936 1940 1941 1960
Minnesota’s most recent conference championship 1967 (1941 when looking at most recent solo CC)
I would agree they are not “historically bad” but it’s not because of these old ass championships lmao. Idk why that natty total is tattooed all over this comment section
Msu is not historically bad but they been bad for the last 4 years except for 2021
Mississippi State 2014 is a big one, especially considering they play in the SEC. Can’t forget about 2007 Kansas. Also Cincinnati made the playoffs which is completely insane. Without thinking too hard about it those are the best I can come up with.
2006 WF team winning the ACC that year. That WF team shout out FSU in Tally and Bobby Bowden's son, who was the offensive coordinator at the time was fired.
Gave up a 18 point lead with a 24-0 run thats a crazy game

I’m surprised 2022 TCU was not on here
I'd love to see a part 2
Could also include 1995 Northwestern. Came out of no where to win the Big Ten.
Seeing tech these last years,it’s so good to see them in their shining glory
Feel like the title should have been a little different, just not 'HISTORICALLY' terrible. Since if we're talking historically Minnesota is actually really fucking good. The last like 20 years they've been mostly terrible though. I also think compared to Glen Mason and Jerry Kill, Fleck's achievements aren't as impressive with how ludicrously easy some of the bowl game entries have been.
yeah I was just trying to make a cool title
@@Amateurloree Hey I mean it worked, I clicked on it. And it is a really well put together video so I can't be mad about that. Thought for sure Kentucky was about to have a similar huge upset like Minnesota's Penn State one last night, but their coach kinda ruined it.

Why not mention how Nebraska hasn’t won anything of note since 1999?
Minnesota has historically won 7 national titles and the only team ever to three-peat!
Fun fact. Minn owns a 37-25-2 series lead over Neb. Huskers never lead in the all time series. Despite Neb owning the Gophers during the '70s/'80s.
Minn currently on a 5 game winning streak against them since 2019.. Minn is 8-3 vs Neb the past decade.
Because Minnesota hasn’t won anything of note since 1960s
what about the weird season indiana was super good? or cincinnati? also i know you couldnt fit all of them in, theres a LOT of random teams doing good, but i think a part 2 could do good aswell. theres just so many

Pure definition of a trash program on a cindarella run.
can you do the opposite historically good teams having bad seasons
Surprised Cincy didnt make this list, given they made playoffs a few years ago, and before that, I rarely heard much from them.
That fake slide still one of the craziest moves ive seen in real time and not on a replay
Should have done in modern CFB history due to the Gopher shaving 6 National Titles
Do one on the 1997 National Champion,DannyWuerffel-led Florida Gators and their revenge title game against Florida state.

The '95 Northwestern team would be a good one. Please don't base greatness on 10 win seasons. The Gophers never regularly played more than 9 games a year until 1964. PJ Fleck doesn't need help rowing his ego's boat.
Irony: Army had no defense.
That Texas vs Texas tech game still makes my stomach squirm.
