This was around the time I flipped the channel to see what the score was and saw that NIU had a real chance to win. I was lucky enough to watch this win live.
Guys. For everyone complaining about the spot. That wasn’t even the only blown call on that play alone. It was a run play on 3rd down. Let’s say he didn’t get the first down (he did). Why did the clock stop? Ok they reviewed it … why was the clock not restarted? Notre Dame NEVER called a timeout. They had one before the third down. They had one on their final drive. How did that ALSO get botched? These refs did EVERYTHING to keep the Irish with a chance to win this game.
Because a Notre Dame player was injured momentarily. So the referees by rules are allowed to offer the Irish to have a time out charged to their team or a game clock reset to 40 seconds and they did they let it run down to zero and then NIU called a timeout. And they set up their field goal. Those are the rules. Hope that helped. Obviously the coach for Notre Dame wanted to save that time out. But he literally cost about 15 plus extra seconds. Because the game clock was at 32 seconds when the play was whistled dead and they saw a Notre Dame player hurt. After all that that's when they checked the Replay for the spot. Hope that helps
The difference is in the head coaches....Freeman stood arms crossed most of the game....northern ill coach was working overtime on his headset, hand full of papers, directing players into position...he made me start rooting for him because he was the only one trying to put his guys in w position to win...that coach is awesome.

The game was in overtime and Pitt doinked a FG that would have won the game but the refs missed that there were two ND players wearing the number 2 on the field at the same time, which should have been a penalty. Nothing was called and ND went on to win the game.

That's the issue, they're looking for clear evidence that he was over the line, not clear evidence that he was short of the line. Clear evidence for either side didn't exist.

Going frame by frame, it's hard to tell exactly when he goes down, but it looks like his right knee goes down just before the rest of his body. It looks like he's down near the 18, because he's not quite halfway to the 15, which is exactly where the first down line is. Going back to the replay at 6:06, it looks like his knee comes down right at the 1st down marker, maybe a little past it, but it's hard to tell cause a Notre Dame player's leg is blocking the runner's knee. Going back again to the replay at 7:25, his knee pretty clearly (at least, compared to the rest of the shots we have) comes down ahead of his torso (where the ball should be). So that would place the ball right at the 18, which (again), is where the first down marker is. But remember, I'm doing this by examining two different replays, guessing where his knee is, guessing where the ball is, and guessing where he's down. It has to be CLEAR AND OBVIOUS. Which is the exact opposite of guessing. So, the call must stand. The announcers are absolutely wild for saying it's not even close, but I understand why they do because he gets dragged for another 1/2-1 yard after he's down, so it looks like it's a first down.
When this happens, I always wonder who the order comes from. It's hard to imagine it's just one ref on the sideline going rogue, especially after they don't overturn it upon review.
I'm glad I watched this.. very exciting and as emotional as Coach Hammock got afterward, justifiably so, mind you, he was as cool as a cucumber in crunch time.. Kudos to the whole team and the broadcast crew

Even though the rest of the season didn't go well for NIU. This win at ND will be one of the biggest upsets in 2024. I do not understand how ND made it into the playoffs. Anyway, NIU earned this win. The outplayed ND in all facets of the game and even with that horrible call on 3rd down, they managed to kick the field goal for the win. That call brings back memories of the WI game many years ago. We got screwed then and lost. this time, we got screwed and won. Go Huskies.
They saw an injured Notre Dame player on the field. So a few seconds after the play was dead that's when he blew the whistle. And then the 10-second runoff rules apply. And then the Notre Dame coach said go ahead and let the :40 sec play clock run because he wanted to save that time out. Knowing that they denied the first down on the replay. That's when NIU called their time out with 34 seconds to go and kicked the go-ahead field goal
I think ND actually did take their timeout there and the TV crew just missed it. Mike said at one point during ND's final drive that they were out of timeouts.

The game was in overtime and Pitt doinked a FG that would have won the game but the refs missed that there were two ND players wearing the number 2 on the field at the same time, which should have been a penalty. Nothing was called and ND went on to win the game.

I’m an NIU fan but regardless, that was unquestionably a first down!!! And, it would have been in any other stadium in the country, except maybe Alabama.

I still don’t understand how that wasn’t an NIU first down on the third and two run. What was the review ref looking at? I didn’t see any clear evidence he was down short of the marker. In any event, what a win! This game salvaged my not-so-great college & NFL football weekend, for sure.
That's the issue, they're looking for clear evidence that he was over the line, not clear evidence that he was short of the line. Clear evidence for either side didn't exist.
And, another ref had multiple angles.
Still got it wrong.
That's why I don't watch games live.

Going frame by frame, it's hard to tell exactly when he goes down, but it looks like his right knee goes down just before the rest of his body. It looks like he's down near the 18, because he's not quite halfway to the 15, which is exactly where the first down line is. Going back to the replay at 6:06, it looks like his knee comes down right at the 1st down marker, maybe a little past it, but it's hard to tell cause a Notre Dame player's leg is blocking the runner's knee. Going back again to the replay at 7:25, his knee pretty clearly (at least, compared to the rest of the shots we have) comes down ahead of his torso (where the ball should be). So that would place the ball right at the 18, which (again), is where the first down marker is. But remember, I'm doing this by examining two different replays, guessing where his knee is, guessing where the ball is, and guessing where he's down. It has to be CLEAR AND OBVIOUS. Which is the exact opposite of guessing. So, the call must stand. The announcers are absolutely wild for saying it's not even close, but I understand why they do because he gets dragged for another 1/2-1 yard after he's down, so it looks like it's a first down.
This will forever be one of the most inexplicable losses in CFB history. Notre Dame's only loss en route to the CFP.

that ref should be arrested, that was clearly a first down and you could see him arguing with the NI coach. Just blatant corruption.
When this happens, I always wonder who the order comes from. It's hard to imagine it's just one ref on the sideline going rogue, especially after they don't overturn it upon review.

Even though the rest of the season didn't go well for NIU. This win at ND will be one of the biggest upsets in 2024. I do not understand how ND made it into the playoffs. Anyway, NIU earned this win. The outplayed ND in all facets of the game and even with that horrible call on 3rd down, they managed to kick the field goal for the win. That call brings back memories of the WI game many years ago. We got screwed then and lost. this time, we got screwed and won. Go Huskies.

Absolutely love the leadership from NIU’s number 44 on the blocked fg, immediately telling his teammate to go down with that football!
Not only was the spot on 4th down terrible, they immediately stopped the clock on a running play without charging ND a timeout.
They saw an injured Notre Dame player on the field. So a few seconds after the play was dead that's when he blew the whistle. And then the 10-second runoff rules apply. And then the Notre Dame coach said go ahead and let the :40 sec play clock run because he wanted to save that time out. Knowing that they denied the first down on the replay. That's when NIU called their time out with 34 seconds to go and kicked the go-ahead field goal
I think ND actually did take their timeout there and the TV crew just missed it. Mike said at one point during ND's final drive that they were out of timeouts.

And Mike made a mistake by saying that they got their time out back. But they didn't according to the rules
@@allennewhausen2541 Thanks for clarifying. Rewatching the video, as you suggest, the announcers are assuming that ND doesn't have a TO to burn over the last 24 seconds, so they must have used it after the final NIU run, and the scoreboard just didn't reflect the use of the final TO.
