I lived in Rio de Janeiro for 15 years. I walked the streets with a healthy amount of fear. Enough to maintain alertness and act quickly and appropriately when needed. I was robbed at gunpoint only twice and mugged by gangs without weapons at least 10 times. I now live in Charlotte, NC and I feel much less safe than i did in Rio.
