As a long time viewer of the show, I must say this is one of the best New Rules I have seen in years. When discussing geopolitics, people often don’t look into the long, complicated history of the places in question, leaving out vital context to the modern situation. More importantly, those people will also forget that there are many past examples of similar situations in history that can help us get a nuanced perspective on the current conflict. To the people reading this comment, please share this Bill Maher video so more people can better understand the Israel-Hamas War.

Small problem with Bills “land grab, get over it”. In his Mexico example, millions of “Mexicans” were integrated as labor as Americans. That was a win/win. Land has people in it. What is the Bill/Israel solution to the people on this land? That was conveniently omitted. (I’ll wait). Edit: And by the way…wasn’t Hitler just a land grabber? Should we have said: “get over it France”. Edit2: Before you jump to conclusions, I am an atheist, and think religious conflict / death are people dying for fairy tales. And I keep seeing atheists like Bill Maher, and Sam Harris offer NO REAL SOLUTIONS, other than allow them to “bias hedge” out of saying what will eventually happen: killing of Palestinians for a land grab. It might be slow, but that is what is going on. Just admit. I’m tired of this avoidance talk.

Reading some of the comments below, I do believe a detailed history of the world, going back to ancient times, which states all the facts, needs to be taught in schools. Clearly, there are a lot of people who also don't know how to use a library to look up old newspaper articles, as well. It never fails to amaze me how so many people would rather believe gossip than find out the facts of the matter! Thank you, Bill, for at least trying to educate them.
If you think these are facts, you are clearly deluded. This is a hugely convenient way of glossing over history and is symptomatic of the American education system. Do you know how Ireland 'just lost its tip'? Through continued organised resistance against its colonisers. That's how. Could you imagine saying this when tens of thousands of people - men, women and children are dying and millions of people are being displaced as we speak? Regardless of your views at least show some damn respect. Shame on you Bill Maher.
I guess I just find his argument pretty flawed and so I find it frustrating to hear people validate it in the comments. Sure, it sounds good with a laugh track and a few visuals but it's telling that he failed to mention countries like Rhodesia, Uganda or Somaliland that were former British colonies (just as so called Israel was under British mandated Palestine) before they were decolonised. I agree, people in these comments don't have a clue and need to read more. You know how Americans love to talk about why the west needs to back Israel because they're the underdog outlier in the Middle East? People used to talk about Rhodesia in a similar way until they went rogue. Israel is going down the same path to rogue statehood in my opinion. Anyway, I used to like Bill. His centre left politics always had a pragmatic approach that I appreciated. It's just too bad he's become a zionazi mouthpiece.

The modern Israel has been a country for what, about 75 years or so, there has never been an independent "Palestine", Gaza has been on its own for the last 15-20 years or whatever and still, we are where we are. A quote attributed to C.K. Chesterton seems to describe this situation "When people stop believing in God they do not believe in nothing, they will believe anything. Getting people to stop believing in false gods that make them feel good about themselves is one high mountain to climb.
@@dagduesund5175 Humanity will only be able to access Truth by accepting we can only be aware of the “Relative Truth”. We thought the world was flat, for example, until discovered otherwise. I find it fascinating you chose a quote about believing in god, because respectfully I believe that as much as the belief in a god can be for some (and not all) part of the solution, it can also be harmful and part of the problem we face today. Specifically, in some religious circles and schoolings, there's a lack of dialogue about scripts that are being held as sacred. Therefore, as history has shown time and time again, there are many people who committed crimes against humanity while claiming that their doings are "God's will". I think that in this conversation, as it's important to recognize some specific scripts can heal, it's also important to shine a light on the dark places, where specific scripts can actually do harm. The Jewish people being called “the People of the Book” also speak about keeping the dialogue alive, which we do also with continuous writings and interpretations. I’d like to add one very known phrase (and principle) in the Jewish culture which is: “דֶּרֶךְ אֶרֶץ קָדְמָה לַתּוֹרָה”. The first two words ‘דֶּרֶךְ אֶרֶץ’ (‘Derech Eretz’) literal translation ‘The way of the Land’, and the meaning of the full phrase translates to “Proper universal ethical behavior precedes the Torah.” No matter which religion, it’s a matter of the sake of humanity itself to be able to criticize specific harmful scripts, even if people hold them sacred, and with that comes healing a lot of the hate and violence we can find. If we look at the antisemitism that arrives from some Islamic people and groups, it’s important to note how it in fact has roots in the Quran. One example: "Thou wilt surely find the most hostile of men to the believers are the Jews and the idolaters." (5:85) = Jews are hostile to Muslims. Another example: "And He brought down those of the People of the Book who supported them from their fortresses and cast terror in their hearts; some you slew, some you made captive. And He bequeathed upon you their lands, their habitations, and their possessions, and a land you never trod. God is powerful over everything." (33:26) = An indication of the battles against the Jews, and a divine authorization to kill them. There is a concept in Judaism of ‘Tikkun Olam’ (תִּיקּוּן עוֹלָם = 'repairing of the world'), which refers to various forms of action intended to repair, heal and improve the world; to the pursuit of universal justice which based on the idea that "Jews bear responsibility not only for their own moral, spiritual, and material welfare, but also for the welfare of society at large.” Humanity has a total need - spiritual, emotional, psychological, physical, logical need - of connection to something bigger than ourselves (be it a Justice, God, Collective etc), finding meaning and belonging. This journey can be beautifully sacred as much as hopelessly devastating. I believe truth can be accessible with empathetic, engaging and knowledgeable communication; through encouragement of curiosity, of questions in the dialogue itself. And I choose to have faith in humanity. I maintain faith in humanity, including my own self. It doesn’t mean I don’t have boundaries, priorities, etc. And it doesn’t mean it comes easy to me, somedays it feels impossible. Yet without it, personally and with all seriousness, I have no reason to live. Rephrasing that with hope and love, it is my cherished reason to live, and pursue life that is worthy of living.
Isreal don't want the indigenous Palestinian to live a normal life with human rights... never wanted neither 2 states nor 1 democratic secular state... they only want to enticingly cleanse the remaining indigenous palestinians for some religious bullshit myth ... they never wanted to negotiate,,, only keeping Jabotinsky's Iron Wall policy
Millions of Germans after WW2 were not only violently expelled from Czechoslovacia but from actual German territory like East Prussia, Pomerania and Silesia. Those German territories added up for one quarter of the former German territory and were annexed by Poland and Russia. What Bill considers parts of Poland or Russia was actual German territory until WW2. Most of those people worked hard building up a new life in the remaining parts of Germany.
That is something people don't understand. If you lose wars you lose territory. That was the norm then and should be now. 5:45 Germany can consider itself lucky that the country still exists today the way it does. Just as Palestine can be lucky to exist after losing the 1967 war.

Go to Aushwitz, see what they did to people and tell me you still feel sorry for those 'expelled' Germans. Realistically, this problem persists because the Arab countries surrounding Israel want it to persist. The reasons may be more complex than: "it's always good to have a bogeyman to distract from our oppression of our population," but, like many other countries in the past, they could have been more accepting of their "brethren" displaced from Israel & helped them to start new lives. That wasn't part of the plan, the Arab countries forced the Palestinians to live in refugee camps, they denied them the opportunity to start new lives & apparently all for the purpose of keeping Jews & Israel as "the bogeyman."
This is correct. If you read the memoirs of the then Syrian president at the time, he actually admits this, saying they (the various Arab governments) said they would be going back in a few years and they never did... remaining second class citizens in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria...
There's so much you're protected from knowing in the US. Netanyahu as recently as 2019 said it was Israel's strategy to bolster Hamas against the PLO to use the chaos to take Palestinian land. Israel's government has a radical religious fanatical ambition of taking all of the West Bank and Gaza, by ethnic cleansing. I have no sympathy for the surrounding Arab countries, but why is it their fault that the survivors of a Holocaust use rhetoric akin to what Hitler used to take another land that isn't theirs?
While all that is true, let's go back to the source, and that source is Islamic Jew hatred, straight out of their book. It also doesn't help that PA leaders are getting filthy rich by continuing the conflict. Trump nipped it in the bud by cutting their funding, but the current cabal fake president undid it all. After all, it and the Muslim Brotherhood have a common goal.
Exactly. Unfortunately there were 10s maybe 100s millions people displaced in the conflicts. Could someone name another precedent of permanent refugees camps? It's more about hate to the Jewish state than love to Palestinian brothers.
So common sense is Bill saying ethnic cleansing has happened before so it’s okay for it to happen now. He knows Israel wants to keep full control of Palestine and Israel will not negotiate.

Excellent history lesson. It’s a very small nation and I’ve never understood why so many people think they should give it up. First time I’ve listened to you and appreciate you were willing to take an unpopular stance.

@@danknibloe3114 It's not a numbers game. The Palestinians started a war, and they haven't surrendered yet, the number could have been 100 Palestinians if they surrendered on day 1. No Muslim was forced to leave when Israel was founded. In the constitution of Israel it states that they hope the Muslims will stay and build the nation of Israel alongside the Jews. All the calls for Muslims to leave Israel came from Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, etc.

Actually, about 700,000 Muslim were expelled from Israel for good reason after the 1948 war of independence but 200, 000 were allowed to stay and most of the ones expelled were later allowed to return.

We should only follow propaganda if it comes from TikTok or a protest sign.
Then it is righteous truth.

I guess just human nature though, all of us like feeding our bias and blocking out anything that challenges it. Too many are so one sided in everything it, and most media only seems to want that to be the case.

I'm jewish and Israeli and first of all I would like to thank you and your team for speaking up, so thank you all.
1:34 Note: After the war of 1947, any Arab who chose to stay in Israel land got a citizenship, aka equal rights. Those who didn't want to stay, moved to the neighboring countries (who started the war on the Jews as a part of the very old trend of ethnic cleansing all Jews), and most got citizenship (which means they are not refugees! but are still claimed to be refugees by some organizations to this day, which is unheard of). Those who didn't chose either, had to live in the land under military, until this was also removed from Gaza Strip and (the terror organization) Hamas was democratically elected.
Three facts in addition to that for more context for those who care to learn:
1. 'Palestine': derives from ancient Greek 'Philistia'. Philistines are the biblical Enemies of the Israelites, which tried to do what? ethnically cleanse the Jews (you can read all about 'the timeline of the name Palestine' in wikipedia).
2. 'Apartheid' claims: Israel is the only democratic state in the entire Middle East - where all of us, jews muslims christians druze can live as equals (yoseph haddad
I appreciate you trying to present the facts, but history has shown that facts do not matter to ignorant people who love believing what they already believe. You're trying to convince people who think masturbating is the same as having real sex that they are really not having sex.
@@dagduesund5175 Thank you for appreciating the effort. Let me ask you, how do you think these subjects should be discussed?
Quote: "but history has shown that facts do not matter to ignorant people who love believing what they already believe. you're trying to convince people who think masturbating is the same as having real sex that they are really not having sex."
In my perspective, this belittles and sexually shames "these people". Not only is it disrespectful but it is also dehumanizing, as you and I both don't even know who "these people" are personally.
I truly believe we need to take responsibility for the way we communicate, in all forms. I love the quote of this judge who said "חופש הביטוי הוא לא חופש הביזוי״, which might not rhyme in translation to English but still is true: Freedom of Speech is not Freedom of Disdain (or Contemn).
Hope this message will convey my well-intentions. I know how frustrating this whole situation is, I know hopelessness and I know loss. I actually am a Jewish person from Israel, so please believe me when I say: *I know...* And I know this as well: we gotta keep it together, we have to stay human especially in times we face inhumanity.

@@tigress1girl Do not know how to approach those people who refuse to believe the truth. The modern Israel has been a country for what, about 75 years or so, there has never been an independent "Palestine", Gaza has been on its own for the last 15-20 years or whatever and still,
we are where we are.
The first two words ‘דֶּרֶךְ אֶרֶץ’ (‘Derech Eretz’) literal translation ‘The way of the Land’, and the meaning of the full phrase translates to “Proper universal ethical behavior precedes the Torah.”
No matter which religion, it’s a matter of the sake of humanity itself to be able to criticize specific harmful scripts, even if people hold them sacred, and with that comes healing a lot of the hate and violence we can find.
There is a concept in Judaism of ‘Tikkun Olam’ (תִּיקּוּן עוֹלָם = 'repairing of the world'), which refers to various forms of action intended to repair, heal and improve the world; to the pursuit of universal justice which based on the idea that "Jews bear responsibility not only for their own moral, spiritual, and material welfare, but also for the welfare of society at large.”
Humanity has a total need - spiritual, emotional, psychological, physical, logical need - of connection to something bigger than ourselves (be it a Justice, God, Collective etc), finding meaning and belonging.

Germany can consider itself lucky that the country still exists today the way it does. Just as Palestine can be lucky to exist after losing the 1967 war.
That's what you get when you loose a war. After what Germany did to Europe they're lucky they're still even a country. They should have been occupied themselves. Go to Aushwitz, see what they did to people and tell me you still feel sorry for those 'expelled' Germans.
Btw if you look further into history, East Prussia was given to the Teutonic Order by the Polish king at the time and after it turned out they were ungrateful assholes they were made into a Polish Vassal.
@@Adam-uu9twDisagree about the part that Germany can be lucky to still exist. There was too many German people to hold them back from having a country.

I proudly support Israel. The Jews are the indigenous people of Israel. The Palestinians are the actual colonizers, but the love being in the false victim mentality. They brought the attack and didn't like the outcome. You get what you pay for.
Bill, this is your best monolog...so far!!
Best new rules segment of the year!!!!!!! What a summary. Thanks Bill
He forgot to mention that from river to the sea is also the policy of Netanyahu, who believes the whole thing belongs to Israel and Palestinian have no right to the land. Maher also forgot to mention that a month before the attack, Netanyahu stood up in the U.N in front of the whole world with a map of Israel, a map that showed the entire West Bank & Gaza belonging to Israel. Why don’t you tell the whole story Mr. Maher?
Bill Maher skillfully deceives his audience by telling them only a half of the story. From river to the sea for Israel is also the policy of Netanyahu and his government who never believed in a 2 state solution from the beginning. Tell the whole story Maher, if you claim to be fair.
@@cyrusparsa1724 this is what you got out all this? One picture? If Israel wanted it, they could have took it a long time ago.
@@cyrusparsa1724I'd suggest you read about the history of 20th century. Because the Palestinians started a war and lost. So Israel could claim rights to all the land of they wanted. They offered them a state several times. But they refused every offer, because their mission statement is the death of all Jews and to write Israel off the map. It's like if native Americans started shooting rockets at American civilians. What do you think would happen? Yes, the land used to be theirs, but the USA exists now and things aren't going back. There was a war, they lost. They should choose peace now
Agustinreyes,
What do you think Israel is doing now. Taking Gaza.
🙏🏿❤️🇵🇸
This is exactly the way I've thought of this conflict for years.
Me too, he just articulated it better with more historical examples!
except it's not.
@@johnsolodovesky582 it's not what?
@@mcleananderson4948 There's a lot of historical inaccuracies - such as that the West Bank alone was the "original UN partition deal" (it is only about a 1/3 of what was promised to the Palestinians in 1947 which itself is less than a third of what they had pre-Zionism), or that Jews were kicked out of Muslim countries post-1948 (only Syria, the vast majority of the Jewish migration was willingly to the new Jewish state to do "Aliyah" and take advantage of land incentives), or that Palestine attacked again and again and lost (the six-day war was started by Israel), or misrepresentations "Arafat was offered 95% of the West Bank" (the Palestinians were not offered the most important part - Jerusalem. And the West Bank at the very least should be wholly Palestine - annexing even more of it through a peace deal is ridiculous.)
@@joshitheyoshi2533 And now the Arabs have nothing, and did not offer any realistic counter offers, only "from the river to the sea" fantasies. The losers of wars do not dictate terms. At this point, the world is exhausted from Arabs refusing to live in peace, and no one cares anymore. They've had their dozens of chances to move forward in peace, and they continually chose war, and now they will have it.
Watching this is soooo frustrating. Because those that should heed it will either never see it...or if they do, they will dismiss it. We are beyond the point of no return.
Imagine negotiating a deal with someone who invaded your house and said, "it's mine by divine right"...
Jordan is Palestine you dont Care for that?
@@Dragon-hb1yqAnd we know what PLO under Arafat did to Jordan in the 1970s. Tried to overthrow the monarchy and take over the country. They killed the Jordanian PM and ended up calling in Israeli air defense to help get the Palestinians out of the country. And there’s also Lebanon and the Palestinian involvement in the civil war there. I don’t think Hamas would stop at the West Bank and Israel.
Unfortunately, you don't understand the concept of world Migration. Throughout history, invaders were invaded. Land is like money, it's us while we have it. We exchange it, it is stolen from us, we die for it, we lost it in foolish deals... But we move on by working for more morning, by defrauding others, by killing others.. It's a vicious cycle: we do on to others what was done to us to survive... And unfortunately, History is not stopping yet. The current map of the world is changing gradually. We may soon need another set of pencils and erasers...
The point is pretty clear: instead of constantly fighting Israel, get a settlement and build a better country. This is probably one of the longest wars in history, they keep losing militarily each time, civilians keep dying, and it’s resulted in Israel not trusting Palestinian citizens given the frequency of attacks. Clearly this isn’t working out for Palestine or Hamas
Like… Muslims did when they swarmed out of the Arab Peninsula all the way to France?
One of the few speeches by Bill Maher in which I agreed with all he said, and he said it eloquently.
100 percent agree with you
Maher's masterpiece. This will be timeless
Bill Maher is a Jew so that's why he supports Israel.
Perfectly said!
WHEN YOUR LEADER SAY WE GO TO WAR, YOU WILL GO TO WAR, U CAN NOT SAY NO😂
