    great series! enjoying seeing the comparative "reviews" for this game, seeing your thoughts on previous version to this etc

    That 'Black Wedding' card was--exactly as you said--evocative! I'll have to look through my cards for that one. 😆

    Spot on. I love that reference to a multitude of small but evocative descriptions. The other thing which often happens is that 2 or more cards yield unanticipated effects. For example you turn in a boss bounty at a monastery and the replacement card is an interrupt requiring an escort to a monastery, voilà! It also happens negatively with the red dungeon cards and their encounters. A bit hard to explain but hopefully series fans know what I mean. Never forgotten how my effort fully assembled tree top workshop was immediately occupied by a dangerous lynxx in one game of Adrimon.

      I call that the serendipity of randomness. Some games are really good at that. Secrets of the Lost Tomb is, IMO, the best at it. The HEX games are good at it as well.

    • @cosmicdeb7576
      @cosmicdeb7576 Рік тому +1

      @@TheDungeonDive exactly so. Randomness is like a marble patterning running through the bedrock of this series. Mechanics such as mutations and caravan journey systems in Shurax, and the dungeon cards in this mix in even more randomness, quite apart from the circumstance offerings. Sadly, I've never played secrets of the lost tomb. Machina Arcana also generates the same sort of effect at times, card A impinging on card B and in turn impinging your action. Great stuff.

    I gotta get it all. Mirza Noctis is what finally got me to get into Hexplore It. Only thing I'm missing now is all the Volume 3 stuff. It's tough to track SOS down for a good price now, but ima get in on a reprint with the Volume 5 campaign, hopefully. The more I added to the toolbox that this game is, the more it became the perfect party-based adventure board game system for me.

    Great video! I’ve been looking at the play style variants and may want to try one of the combined games (probably forests of acrimony and Mirza noctis first). I am interested to see if what I consider to be the best 2 games make for a great experience when combined. Have you ever tried combining the games this way, and how was it? My son has threatened to house rule a game that uses all 4 products - I do not think we would ever finish it, but it sounds exciting. Anyway, think you for sharing your thoughts. I hope to get this to the table more often once we complete Oathsworn.

    I've been meaning to get into Hexplore It at some point, but am a little overwhelmed by choosing between all the different sets. With the Kickstarter going on and a new one on the horizon, this could be a really good opportunity to do an overview video where you talk briefly about each set and maybe give your personal ranking or thoughts about which set to get first. What do you think?

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +1

      Volume one is in my top 10 of all time, so I recommend that. I sold volume three, and don't like it at all. My ranking would be as follows: Vol. 1, Vol. 4, Vol. 2......Vol. 3 far behind.

    The villain stage is a little brutal. Potential damage every round. I may roll for collecters only and ignore possible penalties.

    Is it correct that valley of the dead king is the most streamlined one of the series and the best to start with?

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому

      It's the most streamlined, but it's super easy to start with any of them. 3 is the most obtuse, and the only one I don't like, but it seems to be the fan favorite, because so many board gamers seem to crave complexity these days.

    to me, this game is much better than shurax, and I know its closer to the first two volumes in open sandbox / difficulty wise so that might be it, but it feels more cohesive than shurax did I think.

  • @BeatRag28

    How long is the game? VotDK seemed to be able to fit in a few hours but forest is EXTREMELY long. Can this be played in just 1-2 hours? Like you, thats a worry for me.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +1

      3 hours probably.

    • @cosmicdeb7576
      @cosmicdeb7576 Рік тому +1

      I would allow more time if possible, although I'm sure you can beat the game in under 2 hours, probably via boss bounties and doubling up power ups. Maybe making use of the dangerous zone game variant. If you want to take the boss on at full blood pool or have a lengthy dungeon crawl, I think you need longer. Mind you it's impossible to generalise when discussing these games- my perception is that Forest is much quicker than Valley, but maybe I just spend too long abusing teleport runes and suchlike, whereas assembling relics always seems pretty fast and then you are good to go.

    Never been interested simply because the Hexplore It title is so un-thematic, not only is it self-referential but also a bad pun. Pretty surprised to hear that the writing is thematic and evocative. I always figured it to be as bad as the name

      There's a very good reason why one of the games is in my top 10 of all time. Should probably be even higher up. Absolutely the best adventure games on the market. Masterpieces. I got over my hang-ups. It's easy to do once you start playing. Nothing else like these games.
