    The best thing about Heroquest is BardicBroadcasts legendary review of it. Yours is a VERY close second Daniel 😁

      @@TheDungeonDive Yeah I'll take The DD's regular uploads over a very occasional epic. Daniel's vids are timely and very useful. BB's review lives on in fast receding myth but will never be forgotten all the same.

    Played it once. Loved it. We cleared the rooms. When we cracked the center, I was on the opposite side of the room from the door. I kept passing on my turn, and my playmates couldnt understand why. I did this like 5 times. Then when we were ready to attack, I used my "walk through walls" spell and was in the room, behind the enemy! It was freakin great

    HQ, top feature for me is that its got all dungeon crawling core elements, but is so light I can easily play 4 heroes solo and not get bogged down with long enemy turns, complex rule interactions, having to remember an arms list of dice modifiers, has dice system is open ended to expand and is super easy to mod to add just what you want to get out of it.

    • @TheDungeonDive

      It's a really clean and solid foundation.

    • @n4tune8
      @n4tune8 6 місяців тому

      You are totally right. When I eventually get my League of Dungeoneers reprint, I'm simplifying the rules down to HeroQuest level of complexity. It's going to be a quick game of dungeon and hex crawling.

    • @paulharper7185
      @paulharper7185 6 місяців тому +1

      @@n4tune8 After my experience with Dungeon Universalis, it was clear clear I would never get that to where I wanted it from an expandability (armor capped at 5 on D6 system, forced shields out into its own sub-system) or soloable complexity (monsters often had MORE abilities that the heroes making the enemy turns very heavy). I looked at LoD when it was a free PnP ruleset. While it claimed soloable, the monster turns again were going to be more than I wanted to manage. So I bit the bullet and bought HQ, fits what I need perfectly, and allows me to take the best ideas of other DCs and integrate them in to make a light but deep highly replayable game, all the while letting me use ALL the components that came with HQ and not redesign anything.

    • @n4tune8
      @n4tune8 6 місяців тому

      @paulharper7185 Do you add stuff from other games into HQ? If so, what? In my case, it will be the Hexcrawling from LoD, but I could do it with the map from Forbidden Lands or the modular map from HEXplore It too. In fact, the monsters from Forbidden Lands and HEXplore It have the right amount of complexity too (random attack, low HP). I'll be doing my best impression of Dr Frankenstein and mash-up a system from these games.

    • @paulharper7185
      @paulharper7185 6 місяців тому +1

      @@n4tune8 Yes. I use quite a bit from Bardsung. Was not fond of the campaign structure, leveling, zone vs grid or the combat system, but its dungeon generation systems and Monster AI systems are what I would consider industry leading. I also use furniture and event cards from Dungeon Universalis, it pretty much covers all things HQ as its a derivative of Adv HQ. I am actually in the process converting all that stuff to be 100% compatible (no reading between the lines). I am sure at some point I will convert BS monsters/heroes to HQ also as the minis are also pretty good. Yes I want to add a campaign hex crawl system, but basic solo random dungeon adventuring first.

    The main thing about Heroquest that makes it special is that the components are high quality, and the game is quick and dead simple.
    Out of the box, it’s not a perfect game. It’s more akin to fantasy monopoly than a modern dungeon crawl. However, the skeleton of the game (and this is its genius) is good and it is incredibly easy to mod.
    I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t house rule it. And I’ve never met two players who house rule it the same way. That’s because that core skeleton is good, and different people mod it based on their preferences.
    Setup and tear down take a handful of minutes.
    There are many, many far more complex and nuanced games out there. Most of them take FOREVER to set up, play and put away. It takes a whole afternoon to get a game of descent in. You could play half a campaign of Heroquest in the same time.
    Heroquest is something you can be playing within 5 minutes, have fun for an hour (or five) and put away in less time than it takes to microwave a burrito.
    That’s why it’s timeless. It’s the perfect balance of easy to play and well designed enough to support whatever complexity you want to add.

    What I love about Heroquest is that in its original form, it was an approachable, reasonably priced dungeon crawler for kids who, like myself, never had access to a lot of D&D stuff. It lost that in the reboot, with its expensive price point.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  6 місяців тому +4

      The original price was $30 in the US, and that's $71 adjusted for inflation. Right now the new one is on Amazon for $66, so that's cheaper than the original! It also has better quality carboard, especially the box, and better storage, with stitched rule books! I think the price for what you get is totally inline with the hobby.

    Ok, now I know you're testing the algorithm! : ) I actually never played this back in the day, so I don't have the special connection others do. I have! Right now I prefer HQ, but that's because of things like AxianQuest and other DIY expansions that have made it such a fun solo game. DSO plays OK solo with the app (I wouldn't play without the app), but as of right now there is no way to just play a random quest - it's all the pre-written campaign stuff, and that's not the kind of things I like. Hopefully they release a fully co-op random quest mode for DSO.

    • @mythrando
      @mythrando 6 місяців тому +1

      @@TheDungeonDive I enjoy the story mode, but I also really like random crawls. If you can link that together with some character progression and a hexcrawl, well that's heaven.
      So now I may just have to get HQ... Beyond the base game, can I ask what expansions you recommend as first purchases (if any) for playing rando-solo?

    Honestly I thought its gonna be one of those joke vids for heroquest based on the whole "THE BEST THING ABOUT HEROQUEST IS..." joke but nope, its about reusability for other games.
    ...Come to think of it, that and outdoor survival (a board game that its board is used for ttrpgs even in its heyday in the 70s) are the two board games that come into mind where its resources are used for other games. Kinda wish more newer board games have boards/chits that can be used for other games but heyo.

    All I can say is 'to each their own'. I think the colors are gaudy and really don't work for any game I would want to play in a dungeon. The dimensions of the rooms crams the rooms on the game board as well. Just yuck! Maybe room tiles is the way to go if they are of a size that can be manageable on someone's table. I would have planned out a better layout that makes sense on the board. As it is I find it too ugly!
