I really like the supergates. They're the next logical step after space gates. It's funny, the ancients had a prototype wormhole drive in Atlantis, but the Ori went another direction and just made giant stargates that actually work and can safely transport entire ships between galaxies

It only JUST occurred to me, in Ark of Truth as the Altarens were leaving the Ori galaxy one of them mentioned to another that he had had "the most wonderful idea". From that I surmise that the concept for the Stargate was never available to the Ori before ascension. After ascension they could have certainly found out about the Stargate technology but then why would they have not already known about Humanity in the Milky Way?

The big difference between the two technologies (besides the WHD being an ass pull to get Atlantis into the fight above Earth when the Hyperdrive would have done just fine for that) is locality.
As shown in the series, a Supergate is a one per galaxy kind of deal. Which means if you want to use it, you have to go to it. No matter where in the galaxy you're coming from. A Wormhole Drive allows you to up and go from wherever you are in the moment. More like a hyperdrive.
No need to fly halfway across the galaxy, requiring time and resources for the crew just to make it to the Supergate, and likely another such trip in the other galaxy from its Supergate to your eventual destination.
Both have their benefits through. While both require huge amounts of power, one requires you to carry that with you at all times, while the other only needs it in a specific location in each galaxy. One can move huge numbers of ships in one dial, while the other needs to be on every ship that intends to use it. So the Supergates are more efficient forms of travel, but less convenient.
Much like a teleporter in your home versus having to drive hours to the nearest international airport.

Always enjoyed the concept of the super hate and wondered what happened to it after the Ori crusade was defeated. If SGC was able to replicate one in Pegasus, that would be a massive advantage against the Wraith.

    • @tyrannicpuppy
      @tyrannicpuppy Рік тому +2

A supergate in Pegasus is the worst possible idea. It would be an instant mass exodus machine for the Wraith to focus on for access to the Milky Way. We hopefully already learned that lesson after Midway. Except this time it isn't a few infantry on foot, it's their entire armada. The Lanteans already proved that if you give the Wraith a single target to focus all their effort against, no level of technological superiority will save you.
If the Wraith threat has been resolved, either they are destroyed or no longer feed on humans, then it would make a lot of sense to put a supergate in Pegasus. But during that fight, it is an insane security risk to the billions of lives in the Milky Way.

It makes no sense that super gates would require black holes as power sources, considering the Ancients already had access to infinite energy supplied by the zero-point energy field of Dirac spacetime. The show writers just decided to use a black hole as a power source because it sounded scary.

We still don't know how exactly zero point modules were maid. While i seem to recall the Atlantean scientist (who helped weir in the alternative-timeline in season 1, scratch that, it was a replicant i think) that they can readily make them, maybe black holes are easier.

I freakin' love StarGate. All of the series as well as the film. ( I don't think Universe got/gets enough love). I am remaining hopeful on the prospect of a new series. (Also, apparently Joss Whedon may be attempting to get the Firefly reboot going). And Babylon 5. What a time. As a lover of Speculative-Fiction, the majority of the projects I am most excited for are all extensions of or re-imaginings of series past. And many of the biggest Sci-Fi and fantasy stories these days are all stories that originated back in the 1960's.
I was down with the Super Gates. I thought it a natural conclusion that eventually we'd see an advanced group of douchey aliens using one nefariously. If they do a new Stargate afterall, it would be cool to see one again. I'm open to it.
I hope they do a good job with any future series. Stargate done well, with writing that is original in many respects whilst managing to maintain the vibe and soul of the saga, and top of the line special effects, I am excited for the prospects. I think they might, go darker with a new series. That would be interesting.

Then the general tells him about the recon mission but unless they can dial home its pointless. Then Jackson says he can decipher them? The camera pushes in on Kurt Russell and the general and the general tells him, "Your call.", and Kurt Russell walks away and the general tells Jackson that he's on the team? Anyone remember that scene? Go watch it now and tell me what you think.

My opinion is the entire Ori story arc is one of the most original and compelling in all of broadcast sci-fi. If anything, the Ori were a bit too much for the SG1 universe and the writers had a problem containing such a powerful adversary. "We do not require your blind faith. Merely to believe what you see." This is heavy, philosophical stuff. Needed another season to tie it up properly.

The standard Stargate, in lore, was limited basically by it's energy needs...so the supergate is more of an engineering challenge rather than a leap of technology. It was the Ori's colonialism that created a need for the supergate, and their crusade pushed them into creating it.

your info is flawed. as for sizes, there is the Orlan gate, the regular sized stargates, the PROTO-supergate, and then the supergate itself
The first time we see a kind of supergate, is the PROTO-supergate. With this size, a tel-tak can take the place of one of the pieces.
However, when we finally see an actual supergate, one piece ABSOLUTELY DWARFS an Alkesh
So, the simple understanding is, that the proto-supergate pieces were sent through a regular stargate, so that the pieces of the actual supergate could be sent through
