  • A discussion of the the rise of the replicators as portrayed in Stargate: SG1 and their systematic invasion that threatened all biological life in the Milky Way Galaxy. Among the many powerful foes that the heroes from Stargate Command have contended with, the invasive technological terrors known as the Replicators proved themselves to be one of the greatest threats they would ever face.
Spoiler Warning as I will be talking about significant plot details that occur throughout the Stargate SG1 series.

I'll never stop loving that the Asgard came to us because we were that perfect combination of dumb and clever. We were the only people in the space neighbourhood stupid and willing enough to set fire to a wasp nest

Thor: "The Asgard would never invent a weapon that propels small weights of iron and carbon alloys by igniting a powder of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfur - We cannot think like you."

Thor: "You have demonstrated their weakness may be found through a less sophisticated approach, we are no longer capable of such thinking"
Daniel: "Wait a minute, you're actually saying you need someone dumber than you are?"
Jack: "You may have come to the right place"

Thor made it pretty clear, they needed us because we're the only race who's still slinging rocks and coming up with ideas the others consider "outside of the box"

Replicators were definitely one of my favorite things in Stargate. Reminded me a lot of other consume and conquer species, Zerg, Tyranids, Borg etc. I've always loved that stuff.

The replicators were in also another unnamed Galaxy. The episode enemies probably would have implied that the replicators were in an Intergalactic threat but it was immediately dropped and their origin was switched to the Milky Way galaxy

Reece and Fifth were both hard watches. Reece, I really couldn't blame; her creator did the best he could, but in the end, she was still a flawed creation, doing what she could to cope with her isolation. She had no idea that her "toys" would cause so much destruction.
Fifth was harder, though, imo. Jack's decision to use Fifth's naivete and trust against him was a good foray into that murky gray area, where no one is really right or wrong. I kinda tend to side with Carter on that one, but I still can't fault Jack for making the call, given how much was at stake. It could have made an interesting story arc to see if Fifth could be taught to get his emotions under control, but he was just too unstable, in the long run.
But, that's what made SG1 such a good show; it made you question what the right choice was.

I’ll give you a like and a comment. Star Gate: SG1 was fun. It wasn’t a masterpiece and never aspired to greatness, but it had charm. It’s like Hogans Heroes. That show had charm in its silliness and so doe SGSG1. A hundred years from now there’s going to be an audience. The replicators are just part of it.
Maybe there’s a truth here. Some stories stand the test of time.

  • @PTNLemay

They were a fun enemy, but they underwent far too much power-creep, far too quickly. More than a few times they reached a point where it's like "Oh, ok so even if every single race in the entire galaxy united and tried to stop them, won't do any good." So again and again they need to bring in a new McGuffin to save the day. The writers pulled it off reasonably well. I just dislike when show runners write themselves into a corner like that because they want their "Big Bad" to be more impressive and scary.

    • @fagonfly
      @fagonfly 10 місяців тому +6

I don't really agree with this. Very early on, the replicators were shown to have been a major threat that had beaten back the Asgard all the way to their homeworld. The only real "power-creep" they underwent was the creation of human-form replicators. As far as I'm concerned, the Milky-Way was never in a position to beat back a replicator invasion without the help of the Ancient's technology. Especially with the Goa'uld at the front lines of the fight.

Replicators I first remember we use as a though-away threat to a sub. I think from there they combined it with the unbeatable threat to make it was described as to the Asgard. that is my member from seeing the original series and subsequent series on TV.

The replicator ship would've been a lot more difficult to deal with, if it had just been a massive cloud of widely distributed individual replicators or small groups cooperating enough to travel in hyperspace. A swarm is much more difficult to battle than a massive ship.

No, they have a completely different origin. The Asurans (Pegasus replicators) developed from Lantean weaponized nanites meant to fight the Wraith on a cellular level. They predate the Milky Way Replicators by at least several thousand years.
