Kim, to avoid the lines when blocking, insert “pool noodles”, cut to size into the sleeve while blocking. You can also use them for the sweater side seams. Works great 😊. Jonna, it’s now sewist because sewer is confused with the grated drainage on the streets! 😅

A ballon sleeve has moderate volume with a tighter short wrist cuff. A bell sleeve is shaped like a bell, with a good bit of volume but open at the cuff and drapey. A bishop sleeve has a long fitted cuff from the wrist all the way up the forearm to almost the elbow, then there is alot of full gathered volume that flares out quickly from the long fitted cuff. A mutton chop sleeve has a very long fitted arm up to about the bicep and then flares out dramatically into a big puff sleeve.

Kim. YES! I’m not even a tight knitter and I ALWAYs need to go up several needle sizes to get gauge for many European patterns. Its the way they knit, so much looser than the way most Americans knit. I never pay attention to the needle size anymore. I just look at the required gauge and decide based on my experience and my own knitting what needle I’m most likely to need and start from there. Jonna - for socks you count your stitches per inch and measure your foot to determine how many stitches you need for your socks. Like everything else you can adjust any pattern to custom fit your own needs. Roxanne Richardson has a whole series of videos on how to measure your feet and custom fit your socks. I highly recommended her sock tutorials!!
Just love the rapport you two have together; Jonna, I’ve had the same problem knitting socks: too big, too small, foot not long enough. Finally found a great resource that I think you’ll love: Custom Socks by Kate Atherley. She’s a mathematician and knitting technical editor. I realized how to knit my socks to fit especially concerning negative ease: 1” in width and 1/2” in length. Love this book and know you will too.
So, I love you guys and have been rewatching old episodes while I work and Kim, I cannot get over how ambitious you are with your knits! I'll do one maybe 2 heavy color work or cable patterns a year but you tackle challenging pattern after challenging pattern. You truly are a project knitter, aren't you? P.S. Another great vlog! .....And the lavender oil is a great suggestion, but if all else fails, coming from a mozzie infested tropical background in Aussie, calamine lotion works wonders for the itch and inflammation.
Lovely episode! I enjoy all the “new” projects/patterns I either have in my (very long) queue or want to make Right Now heh heh. Sock yarns vary a LOT from dyer/manufacturer. 420 to 463 yds per 100g = very different gauges. For me (tight knitter), I use US0/2mm to US2/2.75mm. Gauge is important + foot circumferences. 5 to 10% negative ease. I’m trying different toe decreases = different lengths, depending on row gauge. Until I hit that “sweet” spot, I knit, frog several times to get a good fit. I have a Sock Journal w all my notes (yarn, needle, sts, rounds, etc). You’ll get there! Persevere! Love the flower sweater! I don’t think I’d have the patience, but adore the result. Kim, all your sweaters are impressive! Thanks for sooo many gorgeous knits - eye candy, for sure!

Catching up on my knitting 'tubes' and am enthralled with the shrug! I've lots of worsted oddballs in stash...so...maybe for fall. I live in Alberta, Canada. We don't have black flies here -- but Manitoba and east...absolutely! Here, the mosquito is often referred to as our "provincial bird"! 😉 I am also a gardener, and here the "May Long" weekend (Victoria Day weekend, the weekend before your Memorial Day) is considered the Start of Summer and gardens are planted. I have some shrubs to plant this year though and hope to get that done this weekend (Mother's Day) instead. Happy planting! Happy knitting!
I'm a summer camp councellor, and my mosquito bite tip is this - put band-aids on the bites. Doesn't necessairly help with itching, but it's the only way to stop kids (and myself) from scratching it. Do I look silly covered head to toe in band-aids? Yes, but at least they will heal with no scars.
Lovely podcast, ladies! Jonna, do you knit your socks with negative ease lengthwise? Insightful information about the number of stitches and the length of the toe! I would love to see an episode on things a pattern doesn't tell you. There is so much to learn for a new knitter. Kim, your Decision sweater is absolutely stunning. Your photos are always beautiful, but there is something that might save you some time in post process. Back in the day, people used a grey card for color and exposure accuracy. I'm sure you might already know about them. When I photograph something that I know will result in difficult color management, I take one shot with something 50% grey (I'm sure you can find a grey card somewhere-I've also used a lego 😂just anything that is 50% grey) in the exact lighting I'm using to set the color temperature in processing then apply that setting to the photograph of the actual item. Have the best time at the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival.
❤️ the stitch markers!!!! I attended the NJ Wool Walk last weekend (22 shops)! Each store was to have a different color stitch marker with the sheep face logo on it. But many stores ran out early. 🥲
I have knit socks with the rowan sock yarn. It is very soft but it is like knitting a single ply and i 'm just not used to knitting socks in a lightly twined yarn. Love the podcast ❤
Jonna, when you were talking about what to do with your leftover sock yarn, Summer Lee has a shorty pattern that you can use all your leftovers in the sock. They are adorable! In the pattern they are white with colored bits. Love them!
Kim, check your gauge for your sock knitting, go up a needle size or two if your socks are too tight, generally you want about 1" negative ease around your foot and 0.5-1" negative ease for the length of foot (socks should hug your feet). I design a lot of socks and have this mentioned in all of my patterns.

Kim, try peppermint essential oil on those itchy mosquito bites. If you have sensitive skin, add a few drops of peppermint to any carrier oil before applying.

Hi, I did the shadow wrap heel once long ago from a tutorial on you tube. It was great, then I went to do one again and had to go back and consult you tube again and there was all this business of three together. When I did it in the past it was only two, and I recreated that this time and I liked it much more that the tree together. The set up is more like German short rows but using the shadow wrap. If that makes any sense
I don’t enjoy knitting a heel flap and gusset so I use a short row heel BUT with a mini gusset and that works for my narrow-feet-with-high-instep. I love Earthtonesgirl shadow wrap heel, easy to read stitches and no counting 😊. I use a German twisted cast on for cuff down socks for good stretch.
Hi Kim and Jonna! I just wanted to say that I am always so impressed with how well your videos are edited, the inserted photos and the visual and audio quality. I'm so used to podcasters holding things up to the camera and they go blurry and don't focus for ages and it hurts my eyes! You guys never do things like that 😅 Thanks so much for another great episode 💙 ps Jonna- I have the same size feet as you and I always knit my socks on 52 sts (on a 2.5mm needle). It gives the perfect amount of negative ease and fits me like a glove. So I'm not surprised 64 sts was too many for you! I'm always surprised everyone seems to be knitting 64 sts, it's definitely way too big for me...

Thanks for another episode. I too enjoyed Danish Musings Podcast. Oddly I’m making the Spot Sweater and trying to copy another Danish knitters colors which turned out to be very much like the one on Helle’s podcast. I think I have plenty of errors in my fade but oh well. The Spot Sweater was very hard for me being e newbie knitter. Plenty of things that is assumed you would know. Casted on several times. Then tragedy struck, ran out of my Shibui mohair gray and had to really and search to find some. At last I did in Canada!
I live in rural Canada and the best thing for black fly and mosquito bites is lidocaine. There are many different brands like Dr. Numb, Solarcaine, Numbskin, and Inked, but look for 5% lidocaine and it numbs the bite for hours. I feel your pain!

For mosquito bites-I swell up huge and am itchy for well over a week-I find tea tree essential oil or a mix of tea tree and lavender oils works amazing!! And lavender smells better than tea tree by itself lol

Use white vinegar or even pickles or pickle juice(lots of vinegar in pickling) in a pinch at a picnic or camping…it works on any bug bite that itches! From Florida mosquito country! Trust me on this.
Hey, the best thing I have found for bug bites is to use the hottest water you can stand on the bites. I spray water on mine in the shower since I have a removable shower sprayer so I can reach wherever. The hot spoon(hot water hot) works as well. That is best for when you have a place you can easily reach and don't want to be in the ahower. This lasts for at least 10 hours. I know it sounds crazy but try it, you wont be disappointed.
Fun! Jonna, I had thought about making the Rota, but now I don't know. It looks so skimpy! I'll be interested to see how you style it. Kim, I've been wanting to make a cabled cardigan, but the whole cable/yarn/stretch/gauge conundrum makes me shy away. Maybe you'll have some advice when you're done.
Jonna, have you ever tried the Fleegle Toe - Up No- Flap sock pattern? I love this heel and sock pattern. Then if I want a specific pattern, I just add that in on the instep and leg of the pattern.
For your Socks problems. I suggest you try the DRK Everyday sock pattern. I love it, I think it is very easy to fit because the ribbing all over (just saying). Thanks for you episode
P.S. Re: needles sizes: have you ever thought of going to the metric system for your needles? I used to work in a yarn shop and being Canadian, we use metric sizes for our knitting needles and crochet hooks. We have gauge rulers, though, that translate both the old Imperial (British) sizes and current US sizes into metric units. A millimetre is a millimetre is a millimetre, just as an inch is an inch is an inch. But we found with US-numbered needles, that there can be variations in the size. A US #2, for example, should translate to 2.75 mm, but in our experience at the shop, sometimes a customer would bring in a US #2 and it would fit the slot for a 2.25 or a 2.5 or even a 3 mm needle. I am curious to know what your results would be if you used a set of metric needles -- which have a true diameter -- rather than needles simply allotted a number. Thoughts?

Catching up on my knitting 'tubes' and am enthralled with the shrug! I've lots of worsted oddballs in stash...so...maybe for fall. I live in Alberta, Canada. We don't have black flies here -- but Manitoba and east...absolutely! Here, the mosquito is often referred to as our "provincial bird"! 😉 I am also a gardener, and here the "May Long" weekend (Victoria Day weekend, the weekend before your Memorial Day) is considered the Start of Summer and gardens are planted. I have some shrubs to plant this year though and hope to get that done this weekend (Mother's Day) instead. Happy planting! Happy knitting!

I'm a summer camp councellor, and my mosquito bite tip is this - put band-aids on the bites. Doesn't necessairly help with itching, but it's the only way to stop kids (and myself) from scratching it. Do I look silly covered head to toe in band-aids? Yes, but at least they will heal with no scars.

Jonna, do you knit your socks with negative ease lengthwise? Insightful information about the number of stitches and the length of the toe! I would love to see an episode on things a pattern doesn't tell you. There is so much to learn for a new knitter.
Kim, your Decision sweater is absolutely stunning. Your photos are always beautiful, but there is something that might save you some time in post process. Back in the day, people used a grey card for color and exposure accuracy. I'm sure you might already know about them. When I photograph something that I know will result in difficult color management, I take one shot with something 50% grey (I'm sure you can find a grey card somewhere-I've also used a lego 😂just anything that is 50% grey) in the exact lighting I'm using to set the color temperature in processing then apply that setting to the photograph of the actual item.

❤️ the stitch markers!!!! I attended the NJ Wool Walk last weekend (22 shops)! Each store was to have a different color stitch marker with the sheep face logo on it. But many stores ran out early. 🥲
I have knit socks with the rowan sock yarn. It is very soft but it is like knitting a single ply and i 'm just not used to knitting socks in a lightly twined yarn. Love the podcast ❤
Jonna, when you were talking about what to do with your leftover sock yarn, Summer Lee has a shorty pattern that you can use all your leftovers in the sock. They are adorable! In the pattern they are white with colored bits. Love them!

Kim, check your gauge for your sock knitting, go up a needle size or two if your socks are too tight, generally you want about 1" negative ease around your foot and 0.5-1" negative ease for the length of foot (socks should hug your feet). I design a lot of socks and have this mentioned in all of my patterns.

Kim, try peppermint essential oil on those itchy mosquito bites. If you have sensitive skin, add a few drops of peppermint to any carrier oil before applying.

Hi, I did the shadow wrap heel once long ago from a tutorial on you tube. It was great, then I went to do one again and had to go back and consult you tube again and there was all this business of three together. When I did it in the past it was only two, and I recreated that this time and I liked it much more that the tree together. The set up is more like German short rows but using the shadow wrap. If that makes any sense
I get a lot of inspiration from your knits!
I don’t enjoy knitting a heel flap and gusset so I use a short row heel BUT with a mini gusset and that works for my narrow-feet-with-high-instep. I love Earthtonesgirl shadow wrap heel, easy to read stitches and no counting 😊. I use a German twisted cast on for cuff down socks for good stretch.

ps Jonna- I have the same size feet as you and I always knit my socks on 52 sts (on a 2.5mm needle). It gives the perfect amount of negative ease and fits me like a glove. So I'm not surprised 64 sts was too many for you! I'm always surprised everyone seems to be knitting 64 sts, it's definitely way too big for me...

Thanks for another episode. I too enjoyed Danish Musings Podcast. Oddly I’m making the Spot Sweater and trying to copy another Danish knitters colors which turned out to be very much like the one on Helle’s podcast. I think I have plenty of errors in my fade but oh well. The Spot Sweater was very hard for me being e newbie knitter. Plenty of things that is assumed you would know. Casted on several times.
Then tragedy struck, ran out of my Shibui mohair gray and had to really and search to find some. At last I did in Canada!

I live in rural Canada and the best thing for black fly and mosquito bites is lidocaine. There are many different brands like Dr. Numb, Solarcaine, Numbskin, and Inked, but look for 5% lidocaine and it numbs the bite for hours. I feel your pain!

For mosquito bites-I swell up huge and am itchy for well over a week-I find tea tree essential oil or a mix of tea tree and lavender oils works amazing!! And lavender smells better than tea tree by itself lol

Use white vinegar or even pickles or pickle juice(lots of vinegar in pickling) in a pinch at a picnic or camping…it works on any bug bite that itches! From Florida mosquito country! Trust me on this.

Hey, the best thing I have found for bug bites is to use the hottest water you can stand on the bites. I spray water on mine in the shower since I have a removable shower sprayer so I can reach wherever. The hot spoon(hot water hot) works as well. That is best for when you have a place you can easily reach and don't want to be in the ahower. This lasts for at least 10 hours. I know it sounds crazy but try it, you wont be disappointed.
And, it feels so good!

Kim, I've been wanting to make a cabled cardigan, but the whole cable/yarn/stretch/gauge conundrum makes me shy away. Maybe you'll have some advice when you're done.
Jonna, have you ever tried the Fleegle Toe - Up No- Flap sock pattern? I love this heel and sock pattern. Then if I want a specific pattern, I just add that in on the instep and leg of the pattern.

For your Socks problems. I suggest you try the DRK Everyday sock pattern. I love it, I think it is very easy to fit because the ribbing all over (just saying). Thanks for you episode

I like toe up socks. You can try on as you go and put heel in correct spot. They fit well. But I guess you can get a pattern that you like either way.
P.S. Re: needles sizes: have you ever thought of going to the metric system for your needles? I used to work in a yarn shop and being Canadian, we use metric sizes for our knitting needles and crochet hooks. We have gauge rulers, though, that translate both the old Imperial (British) sizes and current US sizes into metric units. A millimetre is a millimetre is a millimetre, just as an inch is an inch is an inch. But we found with US-numbered needles, that there can be variations in the size. A US #2, for example, should translate to 2.75 mm, but in our experience at the shop, sometimes a customer would bring in a US #2 and it would fit the slot for a 2.25 or a 2.5 or even a 3 mm needle. I am curious to know what your results would be if you used a set of metric needles -- which have a true diameter -- rather than needles simply allotted a number. Thoughts?
